What files are affected by a bad block?

I have a hard drive that appears to be failing.  A sequential block by block read (dd if=/dev/disk0s2 of=/dev/null bs=512) is returning an I/O error on a given block.  I'm going to retire this drive and restore from an earlier backup but I'd like to know if there's a way to determine which file(s) are affected by the bad block.  Obviously the file system maintains the file->block mapping, but I'm wondering if there's a utility that can do the reverse?

Hi,
If we want to customize the personal settings and save them as a template in Word 2010. I recommend we try to open the Normal.dot file, modify the personal settings and finally save them. For more detailed information, please see the below links:

Then, if we need to see the 'track changes', they might be hided, please refer to link to show them.

  • What files are in the "All My Files" folder in an iMAC? I accidentally deleted all files in this folder. Any way to recover them?

Please help. I need to recover some important files.

I've had good luck with Prosoft's Data Rescue. You can download a trial to see what files are recoverable, and then purchase the software to recover. You will need an external drive to recover the files to.
    Matt
And what ever you do don't use that hard drive AT ALL until you get your files back, if that's even possible. Even though the files may still be there on your hard drive the file system sees the space they occupy as availble to write to. And OS X WILL overwrite those files if you use the drive in any way.

  • In what file are the albums saved

In what file are the albums saved

Hi Could you be a little more specific, what albums are you referring to?

  • How do you find what files are open?

I have a disk utility that needs to unmount my secondary drive but it is unable to stating there are open files. I know there is a UNIX command that shows what files are open but I can't find the command. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
The command you are after is lsof. Read the manual to find out about the options (there are an awful lot, but most of them you won't need).

  • I have filled a backup drive with 1 terabyte and my computer is running very slow. what files are safe to delete to free up space?

what files are safe to put in the trash without messing up programs?

It would be wise to move your large libraries like your iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom etc, iTunes, iMoves to an external HD. That will free up HD space. After you have relocated those libraries move the copies on the internal HD to the trash and empty the trash. This is the smartest and safest method. Apple explains how to move these libraries in:

Please check the following log files for any further details about the error:
    1) <RDBMS ORACLE_HOME>/appsutil/log/$CONTEXT_NAME/<MMDDHHMM>.log
    2) <RDBMS ORACLE_HOME>/appsutil/log/$CONTEXT_NAME/dbInstall.log
I assume you are using the same Stage area, so it should work fine no matter what instance you are trying to install.

  • Do macs keep a record of what files are copied to an external hard drive?

Is it possible to set up a MacBook to keep a record of what files are copied to an external hard drive?

Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then restart as usual.

  • Need to copy files from PowerBook G4 with bad blocks

Yesterday my PowerBook G4 which is about 5 years old had problems starting up. When I ran Disk Utility on it I was notified that there was a SMART problem and I should backup my data immediately. I have a lot of important data that still needs to be backed up, but I am having problems with likely bad blocks.
I have tried to backup the data two ways both using a firewire connection to my new MacBook Pro. First, I connected the computers via firewire and used the "T" option when booting my old laptop. I tried to copy the files over by clicking on the directories I need to back up and dragging them over to my new laptop. That would work okay, but when it would hit bad files, everything would freeze. My old laptop wouldn't copy over anymore and I couldn't eject the HD from my new laptop.
Then I tried using Terminal to move files over. I connected the computers in the same way as above and opened Terminal from my new laptop. After going into the directory I wanted to copy from on my old laptop, I typed in the following command,
    find . -exec ditto -v {} ~/Data/M33/SE25/ \;
since I was told that might skip over the files with bad blocks and continue on. It did copy some files over, but I had the same problem again with everything freezing up.
I really would like to get as many files transferred as I can without having to do it one-by-one and restarting everything every time my old laptop freezes up. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get around the files with bad blocks or whatever might be happening to freeze up my old laptop?

I did as suggested in that I used the Terminal option and let everything run for 8 hours. Here are some of the notes I got from the system.log file. I will group together the error messages from when they actually occurred. I started the process at midnight. My apologies for some of the mistakes in the posts in the error messages. Some of the characters are messing up the way it is being viewed in the post.

  • What files are included in the OSX Server backup?

    Hey,
I'm a bit worried about my mail database on my OSX 10.8 Server.
I'm using Time Machine all the time to backup the server but I'm not quite sure if the mail database (send/recieved/folders/users) of all my accounts are saved with Time Machine or not.
Does anyone know what directories are saved using Time Machine on a Server? Was digging through the backup but it told me I don't have rights to view the filders :/ bummer
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Daniel,
For the list of supported 'filetypes' which the ESA should be able to identify is when you click on attachment-filetypes on the content filter, the drop down would give a general classification as well as the list of supported extension.
If you do not see the extension within the list here, then the suggested workaround is to use regex matching for the extension file names.
    attachment file info -> filename -> contains -> (?i)(\.(java|jar|js|jsx|jse|job))

  • What files are in the Program Files (X86) folder for Flash Player for Windows 8.1?

I keep getting a message from a Hitman Pro indicating the files sqlite3.dll and winclient32.exe in the Flash Player folder are suspicious. What file should be in that folder?

    I have no such folder.
You probably downloaded a fake, and have malware now.
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Those are the ONLY legitimate updaters that aren't accessed from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
They are the FULL installers we link to here to avoid bundled software (Google Chrome or McAffee Security Scan).

  • What files are used to restore?

I have done a restore twice. The first time, after the phone was reset and activated, I selected retore setting from last synch and waited over 90 minutes and then unplugged and synched the phone. That left me without most settings. I did another restore today and obviously after the restore my old settings are not in the last synch. How do I restore from an older synch. My PC is backed up and I could set Itunes back a few days if I knew what files were involved. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have the latest firmware (1.1.2) and iTunes 7.5 it should give you a choice of backups when you do a restore. If it doesn't then that is the problem to try to solve. If you are not on these releases you need to upgrade to them. You also probably cannot recover your data, but you will be able to in the future.
We can tell you where the backup files are (if we know whether you are using Windows or Mac), but knowing that won't help you restore from them. As you said "PC" I'll assume Windows. Backups are in the folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<WindowsLoginName>\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • What files are safe to delete to create more room on my hard drive?

I'm using my G-4 QuickSilver as my ProTools M-Box LE computer exclusively. What files can I safely delete to create more room on my hard drive for processing and speed?

Let me distill Limnos excellent but lengthy set of suggestions.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
    (1)
    Run
    OmniDiskSweeper

    OmniDiskSweeper is now free!

This will give you a list of files and folders sorted by size. Go after things you know that are big.
    (2) Buy an external firewire harddrive.
    (3) This will save you a gig of space.
Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X,in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). It worked for me on 10.4

You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
The latest the hard drive enclosures support the newer serial ata drives. The drive and closure that I list supports only older parallel ata.
