What folder is the standard Hard Drive icon kept in?

My HD icon has changed into the Time Machine icon. I want the old icon back. Anybody know where I can find it?

There are lots of interesting icns and tif files stored in some unusual places. Unfortunately you can't force Spotlight to look for most of them, but EasyFind will:
http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/
Thus if you tell Spotlight to look for icns files in the /System folder, it will find 133 items. Telling EasyFind to look in /System, and checking the boxes for Packages Contents and Invisibles, yields 705. If you look in /Library with EasyFind there's an additional 1000 icns files. Most are of no great interest, and have rather cryptic names, not to mention a lot of repetition. But many are pretty cool and you may never see them any other way. Often the "Where" column offers a good clue as to what the icon is and whether it would interesting. So anything in a support folder for a printer you don't have probably wouldn't be of interest, but some other odd things might. For instance, there is an icon in "/Library/Receipts/iWeb_202.pkg/Contents/Resources/Alert.app/Contents/Resources "
that is a nice looking bulletin board with two items pinned to it. You can see what the icon is by double click in EasyFind list, it will open in Preview.

  • Why can I not place backup folders in another folder on the same hard drive.

Why can I not move the backup contents of a customer into another folder on the same hard drive without it copiying the information over imediately instead of taking hours and having to use password!!!

Because the backups are not "owned" by you, so you can't just move them.
Also, I don't imagine Time Machine will be able to find them if you just move them.

  • I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 system.  My hard drive was replaced under warranty.  Since then, my computer runs hot. The original hard drive never ran hot.  What would cause the new hard drive to run hot?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  This is my first computer so don't know anything about trouble shooting.  A week before the warranty expired, I took my computer to Apple to be checked.  I was told that my hard drive was bad and they replaced the hard drive.  Since then, my computer runs hot most of the time and the fan is constantly coming on, which is good  My computer rarely ran hot with the original hard drive.  What would be causing this?

    racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • Can I back up images in Lightroom to an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered and sending files to a folder on the internal hard drive?

I'd like to be able to send files to both the internal hard drive and an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered in Lightroom. Can this be done and if so how? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • HT1751 So what happens when the external hard drive with all of my iTunes media on it crashes??

I moved my iTunes media/library (as well as iPhoto) to an external hard drive many moons ago.  It's been a great decision up until today, when the portable hard drive I was using decided to commit suicide.  Is it possible to restore the lost media and library files from Time Machine, or are all of my music (and picture) files officially gone???  Help!!

If you have been doing the basics and backing up your computer, then they are not gone.  They are in your backup.
Use your backup to put them back.

  • What is currently the best hard drive upgrade for 2009 white mac book? (within reason! ;-) ) looking at Seagate momentus 7200 320gb and momentus XT

hello people of the Apple community.
There seems to be a lot of threads regarding some similar issues. Some of the questions seem a few years old so I thought I'd post a new thread. I have a white 2009 macbook and I need to upgrade the hard drive to I think 320gb - cant afford any more. Im looking for a good 320gb fast-ish drive.
A few questions arise as Im not 100% clued up with the terminology
    1) Is sata 300 of any benefit? how do i check what mine currently uses?
    2) Cache size and spindle speed: is 16mb the standard? and does 7200rpm drain the battery quicker? what do most people go for?
    3) Pleeeese someone recommend something good! The more you look the more numbers and options come available!
Im looking at the Seagate momentus range .. Is the XT range of any benefit on my machine?
    Thanks, Jeremy

If I may, it seems uneconomical to spend any amount of $$ to upgrade a "long in the tooth" Macbook. Instead, why not a huge (say 1 TB) external drive for $100.00? And move some of the files from the internal to the external. It will require some "house keeping" to decide what files go where, but this could free up a lot space on the internal, and therefore boost performance as well. And when the long in the tooth finally dies, you will still have the external.

  • I plugged in my external Hard drive everything was going fine, I dumped lots of music into it. Now I can find the external hard Drive Icon. I have done a search using spotlight and WD My Passport doesn't show up.

Any Idea as to where it went?

What does this have to do with iCloud on your iOS device (i.e. this forum you've posted in)?
Have you tried unplugging and plugging the hard drive back in? Tried turning it off and back on again?

  • How can I find the Mac Hard Drive Icon in Finder?

Why don't I see an Icon for my Mac HD in Finder? Also, should there be a file "Printer Setup Utility" in the Utility file?

To show Macintosh HD in the Finder sidebar, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Sidebar, and tick "Hard disks". It will show in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to show it in Desktop, open Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "Hard disks".
Respecting to Printer Setup Utility, it doesn't come by default in OS X Mountain Lion. After adding a printer, it's possible that some printer utilities get added, and one of them may be Printer Setup Utility

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • Can't create new folder on an external hard drive, and how to transfer files?

    Hello everyone,
the non-English speaking videographer I translate for is having problems operating his Premiere CS5 for Mac from an external hard drive. He cannot create new folder on the external hard drive (the "New Folder" button is grayed-out when tries to export media onto the external hard drive) and when he simply tries to create new folder, the "new folder" option isn't available.
He suspects it's because the hard drive was formatted for PC.
    Questions:
    - should PC-formatting cause that problem?
    - what's the proper way to transfer media files from PC-formatted external hard drive to the internal hard drive on Mac?
    Would appreciate your advice.
    Dimitri Vorontzov

He is right on the money
Now, for the sad or FAT part. You need to format the drive as FAT32 to make it work both on PC and MAC but, and that is a big BUT, the max file size of any given file will be 4GB. I haven't treid other formats yet, like the journaled MAC OS extended, but I don't think that would work. We transfer our files through or own gigabit network so I never had to try it, other than FAT32 formatted SDHC cards.

  • Why a "?" on hard drive icon in system preferences?

If I open System Preferences and go to Start Up Disc, there are 2 icons.
One is the hard drive icon on my Desktop (Mac OS X,10.5.8 on Rosebud).
The other hard drive icon is "Network Startup" and it has what looks like a dark grey circle with a white question mark on it.
I have selected Rosebud. I want to know why there is a "?" on the "Network Startup" icon.
    Anyone?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
This means it's either not avilable or not enough space.

  • My old hard drive is dead and I need to move iTunes to the new hard drive

My computer's old hard drive contained some corrupted Windows files.  A friend was able to get my husband's iTunes file off the old hard drive and it's saved in the My Music folder on the new hard drive.  Can someone please give me super easy to understand instructions on how I get the iTunes stuff onto the new hard drive?  I don't want to mess anything up because he has such a large number of albums in the iTunes folder.  Thank you in advance!

It sounds like you just have 2 formatted drives (SSD, HDD) that are not configured as a Fusion drive. If so, you have to manually move files from the SSD to the HDD and visa versa.
If your system would have come configured with a Fusion drive (SSD and HDD 'fused' together) then OS X would maintain file movement from the SSD to the HDD without user intervention.
Look here then scroll down to Introducing Fusion Drive for a brief explanation.

  • How to move/copy Home Folder to a new hard drive?

Hard drive crashed in Snow Leopard, but before it did I pulled off my home folder. I am going to reinstall Snow Leopard on a new hard drive. How do I move/copy my home folder to the new hard drive? The home folder is sitting on an external hard drive that connects via firewire 400. Do I simply recreate the user account on the computer with new hard drive and copy/move the old home folder over to overwrite the new home folder? Looking forward to any suggestions.
    David

Normally you can move your exiting home dir to another drive without any problems.  For example, see
How to Move the Home Folder in OS X – and Why
But you appear to want to take a home dir from another system and make it the home dir on another system.  That may or may not work.  The operations are the same, i.e., point to the new home dir via the Accounts  system prefs advanced options.  But if the account id's are not the same there is going to be permissions problems.
Similarly, you can have permissions problems for the same reason just copying the stuff over the newly created home dir.
If you already know the user id's are the same then I think you may just get away with the substitution.

  • Hard drive icon displaces

    Hi Everyone,
My recent problem is everytime I restart the mini, hard drive icon appears at the centre of the desktop instead of its usual place. This started after I made some changes on the size of the desktop icons. Thanks...

Additionally, you could download the program Mac HelpMate:
    http://www.machelpmate.com/
    Run it.
Then, click on the lock in the bottom right, enter your system / administrator password.
Then, click on the "Clean" tab.
    Then, choose remove .DS_Store files.
    Then, click Go.
Now, see if that fixed your problem.
    I hope this helps.

  • Why is hard drive icon in upper right corner?

hello. i have snow leopard on my macbook pro so i'm not very familiar with lion, however my 13 year old daughter has a macbook pro with lion and i'm the admin. i just noticed the macintosh hard drive icon in the upper right corner of her screen. is this normal in lion? if not, how can i get it out of there? thanks for any and all help.

Yes, that's the normal location for the disk icon(s). They start at the top with the startup drive. Other drives mount below it.
If you don't want drive icons to appear then open Finder preferences, click on the General icon in the toolbar. Uncheck the boxes for items you don't want displayed on the Desktop. Then click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar and similarly check/uncheck items you want displayed in the sidebar.
