  • I'm struggling to move video clips from my macbook pro to my ipad. a few play but most won't go over in the sync. What format do I need to clips to be in?

Greetings. I'm attempting to sync video clips from my macbook pro to my ipad 2 without much success.  A few videos go over and the rest can't. What format do they need to be in?  Thanks for any help you can give.  JWA

QuickTime Pro costs a few buck but is a good tool to have on hand as it can open and transcode a wide variety of video and audio formats.
It's like a Swiss Army knife for media files.

  • I have a video in .avi format, what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

I have a video in .avi format, but what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

tylerfrombalantine's post had zero grammar in it, so it's not clear what he's saying. I bought a DVD recorder and the instruction manual lists all the disc formats it can play. Check your DVD recorder manual to see what works with it, then burn a DVD that matches. It should be fine to burn just a standard DVD, since of course any DVD player can play that.
Depending on the program you use, you may not have to convert anything manually. The program might convert your current video format to DVD on fly as it burns the disc.

Probably doesn't help you, but there are many video converters out there that have ipod touch / iphone profiles, etc, that will chose the right settings for you. A quick google should help

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • What formats of videos can be played from the SDHC card on the Zen?

CWhat formats of videos can be played from the SDHC card on the Zen?' I realize that the SDHC card data is not integrated into the same functions as the data on the internal dri've. That's not my issue.
My issue is trying to find [color="#ff0000"]ANY videos that can be played [color="#ff0000"]AT ALL from the SDHC card.
I've been e-mailing with technical support for 2 weeks but it seems all I get is the run-around (and I different technician) with each e-mail reply.
First they tell me I have to get my videos from Amazon Unbox in order to play them. Then they tell me that, no, the Amazon ones don't play from the SDHC card.
Can anyone tell me what format or what source I can use to actually play videos from the SDHC card?

  • What format must video be in for fce?

what fomat must video clips be in for fce?

If you have appropriate QuickTime Components installed ...many different types of files can be imported directly into FCE. Basically everything that can be played in QuickTime Player.
Perhaps true as far as merely importing material into FCE.  But that's not the same as successfully editing, rendering & exporting final results with FCE.
Many, many users have rued the day they made the mistake of importing unsupported video formats & codecs into FCE.  And too often the problems only show up after hours/days/weeks of editing, only to find out upon final rendering or exporting that the effects don't work, frame sizes don't match, results are all pixellated, stuttery, off color, or the video just doesn't play.
While FCE is based on QuickTime, it does not provide support for all the various types of video & audio formats/codecs that QuickTime itself supports.  Perian or no Perian.
FCE was designed to natively edit only QuickTime/DV (NTSC or PAL) and QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec video.  (HDV & AVCHD are transcoded into QuickTime/AIC during capture.)  Using other containers and/or codecs can be a quick way to get a major headache.

  • What format do videos for the Nano have to be in?

I have videos that are already in MP4 format that will not upload to the 7th gen nano. They are not high def cause they were taken with a phone ... is there a converter out there that I DON'T have to pay for. This is ridiculous that the kid such an amazing gift and they can't use it due to all the proprietary #$%@& you have to go through just so they can use it.

All of the encoding parameters supported by the 5G iPod are on the tech specs on the Apple site:
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
See the row "Video Support" about midway down the page.
On the Mac, I've been using Handbrake to encode videos to MP4 for the iPod, works great. There's an article or blog entry somewhere with all the details, but unfortunately I don't have it handy.

  • What format do i need to download a book

Can i download books from free sites onto my ipad or do i need to convert them

You will need an app on your iPad that support the type of book that you want to download. If they are epub books that don't have digital rights management on them then you should be able to download them to the iBooks app e.g. in Safari if I select a book on http://gutenberg.org it gives me the option to open it in the iBooks app.

Handbrake can convert the avi videos well to iPad compatible formats, and use the preset like this:

  • HT204382 what software do i need to play movies on avi file . have connected a external memory disk and all the movies are in avi format.

What software do i need to install in order to be able
to play movies in .avi format.
have connected an external memory and all the entertainment
    files are in .avi format.
Ansver i get : does not support

VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

  • Help picking out a new video camcorder...what format do I use?

Help! I want to purchase a new HD video camcorder. I want a good unit with a limit being close to the $1,000 range. I will make some short movies and am struggling with what to purchase. I use FCE 4.01 for most of my editing, and sometimes I will use iMovie as well.
My struggle is the format. I've read so much stuff that I'm confused on what to purchase. I've used MiniDV in the past, yet there are a number of other formats out now and it appears that many of them will not work with my gear.
Can someone just give me a straight answer, do I stay with a tape unit, even though they are phasing this out? Or do I purchase another type of format. It needs to work with my MAC and not have any problems, hangups, or have to go through various steps and other programs to be able to use it. So simplicity is important. But I also don't want to be hard headed if I need to use another format.
Your help is very much appreciated.
    Mike

.. AVCHD... I can use it, but it must be converted even though my MAC and FCE support the AVCHD format.
'supports' means: import from. - then, under the hood, out of your control, hidden in the woods.. ooops... - AVCHD gets converted into an edit-intermediate. you can not edit AVCHD natively on a Mac with iM or FCE. this transformation is mainly lossless. only thing, you'll notice: the content from you 8GB-SDcard grabs 40-60GBs on your Mac! => so high compressed is AVCHD, and for edit, you need each frame of video free accessible.. files get expanded..
As for easy to use, the HDV on miniDV tape is smooth. The biggest drawback is the length of time that it takes to import into the computer. And of course the fact that it is outdated.
naw, not outdated.. on a semi-pro level, tape is still #1. and that real-time import.. as a hobbyist, I'm not in a hurry..
biggest advantage: actually HDV is the ONLY format which allows to play-out your HiDef projects back to some media (=tiny miniDVtapes) .. AVCHD is one-way-only.. when edit done, then...? BluRay? extra costs, 'cause 3rd party solutions needed. MediaCenter? Extra.. AppleTV? No support of FullHD.. yet. Tape, Holocrystal, The Cloud...? Nope. AVCHD-sourced-projects can only be stored on harddrives. and even more harddrives.. you need additional harddrives for backups of the harddrives .. ... .. ... ...
I was actually thinking Canon based on all the reviews I have been reading.
they have an excellent reputation (some miniDVs acted iffy..) , Canon builds its own components, Canon is a brand in professional broadcasting.. I like them.. allthough my actual cam is a Sony :)))

  • Video Files as email attachments - what formats on iPhone 3Gs ?

    Hi
This may turn out to be a dumb newbie quesiton but what format video files can I play when sent as email attachments?
WMV shows as an attachment with the Qucktime icon but can't download/play
MPG allows you to launch but then says "Movie format is not supported"
Do I need to install a specific player app or is there a setting somewhere that I need to make?... or is this not possible (seems unlikely)
Plays vids on YouTube etc no problem.
    Thanks!
    Iain
