What format to use in leu of Photoshop?

As a way to 'work around' the potential loss of Photoshop files if I ever need to cancel my Creative Cloud Membership I'm thinking that TIFF is able to keep layers but what about type layers, adjustment layers and other photoshop features? Just to set the groundwork for this question: Lets talk about Creative Cloud. Some of us have it some of us defer to CS6 or whatever is doing the job for us. My main concern is that with CC, you are 'stuck' to continue with the upgrades. If you decide to back out or let it die, so will all of your files and apps for CC die with it as your older versions of CS6 and older will not open the newer version files and Adobe 'LOCKS' the CC apps you have up to that point.
So there is the dilemma, just in case it would ever happen, what is the best 'savable' file format that would preserve most or all of Photoshop's features but would still open with older CS6 or older Photoshop?

All right, I'm in good company here. I like and use the full suite, building websites, publishing books and producing printed materials in both InDesign and Illustrator. There is just nothing of the main Adobe Apps that I can live without, so full bore is the way for me. I'm just realizing that it takes some precautions, just in case, if ever, I need to open that on-going InDesign project in CS6, well, I had just be ready by saving backwards, I haven't even checked but I'm sure you can, save as for the CS6 version just so I won't ever be stuck up the creek without a paddle. As far as Premiere Pro and I'm sure Audition, I'll just be sure to save all of my working files in an orderly fashion in case I ever have to re-construct the world I live in. These things can be done if they are realized and then steps taken on a regular basis over time to keep the older version files alive.
Whew, I'm just happy to be keeping up with latest versions in CC. As we all know, there are 'gates' ahead as you get older: There will be a time when you can no longer drive a car, a time when cutting back on certain activities will have to happen, maybe not ruled out altogether, but cutting back for wisdom's sake (No more zip-line trips wearing flip-flops over the grand canyon.) Anyway, In that frame of view, I'm considering what is the best, wisest way to operate Adobe CC products  NOW, so I'll be covered for the future.
Thanks for all the great input here. More More....

I'm interested in generating eprint jobs from a Linux machine, so I'm wondering what format is used, and how you cope with email gateways which can accomodate messages of limited size.
    Can somebody assist please?

    Hi Graham,
Try keeping the email size to less than 5MB for faster printing.

  • My podcasts what format for use with iPod

I have my own website www.chumlordfishing.com and I do instructional podcasts, so far every podcast needs to be converted in iTunes to play on my and others iPods. What format will allow the podcasts to be played without needing to be converted. Additionally, they don't show up in my iPod under podcasts once converted. They show up under videos.
    Thanks for the help!!!

Intel processor in you MB Pro? Need it to capture avchd.
regarding file size and the need for external drive:
"AVCHD output files are about 120Mb per minute of footage. The converted output file will be about four times the size of the input. This is because AVCHD is a highly compressed HD format and we are uncompressing it into a Quicktime-friendly high definition format. Our example 1 minute AVCHD clip becomes about 500Mb in size, after conversion.
The final size of a converted clip has a lot to do with the amount of movement in the clip. A lot of movement will mean a larger file. Action clips can be as high as 7 times the size of the raw clips."

  • HT2729 what format is used to sync music to an ipod

I have a mac book pro and am trying to sync play lists into my ipod.  I made sure that the setting are on manual.  For a reason that is unknown to me, I am not able to get any playlists into the ipod.  Could it be the format???  If yes, what format should the music be in???
Any help with answers is truly appreciated...

    charlie2177 wrote:

Whatever format it is already in.  iTunes does not convert the music simply for syncing to an iDevice.
If you are trying to sync a playlist, select the Music tab, select sync Music then tell iTunes what playlists to sync.

  • Making a book trailer in AE - what format to use?

I'm a basic & new user of AE. I want to make a very simple book trailer for a children's picture book. iMovie was almost good enough. I made my first book trailer with it and it was sufficient:   Butterfly Comes To Town - YouTube
But I want more control over the title placement & the Ken Burns effect. I'm getting the animation part of AE - but not the technical stuff. Could anyone tell me when I open a new composition - what should I choose as a preset in the pulldown menu? I'm confused -- in the forum -- Re: Best and most efficient movie format for website- I read this recommendation: "A common choice these days is H.264."
But I don't see that in the drop down.

You picked the wrong preset... look at the PAR.
    Use this one:
An After Effects project is a file that contains references to your source footage and any compositions you created. A composition is what eventually becomes a movie (video). You can have many compositions and many different sources of footage. The footage is never altered in any way, it is just used in a composition. If you move a footage file to another folder, the next time you open AE the footage will be reported as missing, because the Project file does not store footage, it only stores references to the footage. IOW, myCoolFootage.mov is stored on my D drive in the New Projects folder.
Does that help???  Work your way through the Basic Workflow tutorials and you'll get a good start on what's going on. The only thing that has really changed in the last 20 years in AE are the number of features and effects you can use. The operating principal has never changed. Import footage, put the footage in a composition, do something with the footage by applying effects or masks or blend modes and render your composition (your movie).

  • HV30 FCP What format is used in Compressor

    Is this correct?
    HV30 and FCP7.0 workflow
From what I gather, I import footage using:
    A/V setting:
Sequence preset: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
    capture preset: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec
    my camera settings:
    av->dv: off
    playback: auto
    comp. out: 1080i
    dvoutput: hdv/dv
Right. so it imports like imovie. with no options after selecting "Log and Capture." Once imported. the files appear in the FCP file browser.
Do i need to send these files out to compressor?
The reason i ask is that the files appear on the desktop as simpletext files.
I deleted the files from fcp. then reimported them into fcp file browser from the desktop. It recognized it as an unknown file format.
later, i tried this again, it must've been the "save" project button. At first, i couldn't import these simpletext files into a new project. i then made a third new project. imported these files and voila. no problem. fcp recognized it.
What am i doing wrong here? perhaps a desktop or hardware problem?

    Thank you Iain.
    a couple questions:
you mentioned, "...normally recommend capturing to HDV and editing it natively." My interpretation is: re-import footage as ProRes into FCP and then render as ProRes.
    That seems straightfoward.
So, my A/V settings should be the following:
    Sequence Preset:
any of the "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) __x1080 __ 48kHz"
    And Capture Preset:
    HDV-Apple ProRes 422
    or
    HDV-Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    just read this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10404099&#10404099
and it says that, "its worth converting to HDV-Apple ProRes422 (HQ), the normal HDV-Apple ProRes 422 is enough.
    Is this correct?
HQ is beautiful, i would like to achieve this quality for youtube.

  • Web clip compatibility - what format to use?

If you were making a video-centric site and you wanted as many people as possible to be able to see the videos, how would you encode them? Assume technically unsavvy folks are a big part of the target audience.
I was going to have a large video in H.264, a smaller default version with the Sorenson 3 codec (in a .mov container), and finally a last-resort FLV for people without Quicktime. I'm not familiar with non-Quicktime formats so I need some help here.
Are there a lot of people with WMP but not Quicktime? Is it worth serving them a WMV of some sort, and if so what? Otherwise, do you think a small FLV version would suffice for that minority? [Post edited by Hosts to remove the "poll" question.]
Hopefully you see what I'm getting at. Sorry I can't be more clear right now but I'm in a rush with this project and can't waste too much time. Feel free to discuss this at length, though, because these compressions won't be happening for two weeks or so.

the oft quoted Mac market share as a guide (ie around 4% )
To quote a recent PC Market share survey:
Apple is now in the top 5 of PC vendors and perhaps more importantly, now has a market share of 6.2%. IDC puts their market share about one point lower, but even with that, these numbers are impressive if you realize that less then 24 months ago, Apple’s market share was barely 3.8% of the total WW market for PC’s
Even that is misleading, as thanks to iPods, most PCs have QuickTime installed. WMV schwuble-u-MVs...
    I use Quicktime.

  • I am so confused about what format is used to fit the most music on my 6th gen 16 gig, does anybody speak not tech to give me some guidance?

i am seriously unable to figure out how you format your music library to fit as much as possible. i have got to be doing something wrong. i have a brand new 16 gig 6th gen and it filled up half way thru my content. i do not want ,nor do i have any other stuff on it. no videos or pictures, no nike fit, nothing.but i did set it to do the album cover in custom color. i am wondering if that is what is hogging my gigs? i have the settings for music as mp3 and at the lowest setting of kilobites, or bitrates, or whatever its called (?!) 128... is there any hope of squeezing more music on this little guy? does anybody have any hints or suggestions ...also while we are delving.. how do you check the old content to see what its formatted as. i do not have the newest version of itunes because when i hooked my new ipod up to my computer for the first time it wasnt showing up in itunes devices. as far as i could tell there was a glitch with the latest version of itunes so i uninstalled and went back to previous version. it seemed to be okay after that but hey  i'm the goon who cant get all her music on the ipod that everyone assured me would hold all of my content. otherwise i would have gotten the ipod with 64gigs. please help if you arent too annoyed with my ineptitude. it would win you my everlasting gratitude and you get a star in your crown... so thats nice...

thank-you! yeah, i cant see going to 64.  as it stood sound quality was dodgy. good on some stuff, great on others, and terrible on a few. i have some great news...my ipod is not showing up in itunes.   again. i give up. it has music on it. its full to the tippy top. i fooled around with some of the things the trouble shooter wizard thing suggested last night for hours. didnt fix it. after awhile i was just going in circles. i will just live with the thing the way it is. but i will say one thing; after reading some of the posted issues other folks are having i'm just glad i didnt put everything in the cloud....peace

  • Embedding video--what format to use

If I use QuickTime will all visitors be able to view it?

As Tim already pointed out if the PC users don't have the free Quicktime for Windows installed they won't be able to view the videos. Alternate formats would be flash or wmv. You will need a 3rd party application to convert the QT files to either of those formats. That's an area I'm not well versed in.

  • What format to use for iDvd.

Hello and thank you for reading.
I am currently saving home videos onto my hard drive as .dv files via iMovie events. I am also using iMovie to cut these files however I see fitting.
I am trying to find a format to convert these files so that it will provide clarity once they are burned onto a dvd (via iDvd) and will not be an overwhelming size (each hour of .dv footage is about 12 gb). Thanks for the help.

As Klaus says, .dv is excellent for bringing into iDVD for creating DVDs. In terms of storage for any future editing, highlights, compilations, etc. you can:
    * send your video back out to tape (full resolution storage, but flattens titles and transitions into the video; need a tape reader in the future)
    * retrieve the desired video from the DVDs or disc image (mpeg-2 format is fine for viewing, but it's tossing lots of content; eg, at 12 gigs per hour in .dv format, it's about 4 gigs when compressed into mpeg-2 format. The format conversion tools keep getting better, but that's a big gap to overcome).
    * use large hard drives to store .dv format files (storage keeps getting cheaper and I like the flexibility of this option since the video is relatively uncompressed).
Personally, I keep the original files and a virtual DVD (disc image) so I can easily make another DVD for someone (from the disc image) or I can jump back into the details of that project.

  • What format to use for compatibility with Mac and PC

    Hi!
Just created an HD video in FCPX v10.1.
Is there a sharing option that I can use to get a video file that can be read both on a Mac (Quicktime) and on a PC (Windows Media Player)?
    Thanks
    Yvon

Avid has a free codec called DNxHD. Sort of an alternative to ProRes. It's the only usable one I've found for jumping between PC and Mac systems. It makes very large files however, which is a hassle but not a deal-breaker. (You can control the file size: 8-bit vs 10-bit, etc.).
I use it for workflow issues, before final render, however. If you just want to render a final product that is used on all systems, then h264 / mp4 is your best bet, like others have said.
If you really need a final version that is uncompressed, then DNxHD works. But the codec has to be installed on the user's computer.

  • What formatting/zooming features do YOU use in Photoshop CS6? (Digital art question)

Hi, I am a beginner dabbling in digital art, and I was wondering what format you use. Examples include "Default Photoshop size", "U.S. Paper", "Web", etcetera. I feel that the paper, without doing anything to it, is too small for details.
Also, when what do the pros in digital art do as for zooming in? Do they set it "Fit on screen", "100%", "200%"? I'm talking about maybe concept paintings that have very small and fine details.
Sorry my questions are sort of awkwardly-phrased. I don't know the correct terminology.

The size and resolution depends on the intended output.
In my opinion relevant zooming shortcuts would be cmd-0 (View > Fit on Screen), cmd-1 (View > 100%) and cmd-spacebar/cmd-alt-spacebar to temporarily switch the current Tool to the Zoom Tool.

  • What format do I use for to edit with footage from Isight camera (Mpeg-4)

I've been having trouble with the rendering of clips in the timeline. I'm using 3 video tracks and all of them were recorded on my Isight camera, making all of them mpeg 4 files so when I first imported them, every time I changed one little thing on the timeline, it all had to be rendered again but it took forever. So I went to easy setup and changed the format a few times to see if any would work since I haven't had this problem before but this is the first time I'm using clips from my isight camera. Does anyone know what format to use or do I need to convert the files?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You need to convert the media into a format that's natively editable in FCE. You can use MPEG Streamclip to do that.
