What frame-rate should I choose for iOS devices ?

Hi there,
I have my project set to 60FPS. everything looks smooth and fine  when testing on the iphone 4s.
I don't have a 3G to test on yet, should I leave the framerate as 60FPS for 3g or lower it?
I don't really understand how to determine what to set the framerate for best performance or even if it matters.
Just after some clarification about what to set the framerate to.
Thanks

Yes release is same as non-debug
Okay I finally get your question.
The idea is to keep a value for fps that meets your requirement. Using a value higher than this wastes resources. A simple example would be running an application at 60 fps that is an enterprise application which is clearly wasteful. For your scrolling usecase, if your performance requirement is of 40 fps then keep framerate at 40. Now two things can happen either your device will have enough juice to run at 40 fps or it won't have. If it has the juice it will run at 40 fps no issues. But if it does not have enough juice then it won't and cause stutter. In such a case raising the framerate to 60 will serve no purpose, because that relatively slower device could not scroll at 40 fps, no chance of it to scroll at 60 fps. You should not concern yourself to keep different framerates for different devices. Keep the framerate at a value that meets your requirement, if the underlying device can play at that fps it will play, otherwise it will stutter.
To answer your original question, no you will not get smoother scrolling on a lower frame rate.

  • What frame rate should you build your Flash file at?

Every second of video has 30 frames. But Flash animations can
be done at any frame rate, which raises a couple of important
questions:what frame rate should you work at, and second, if you
choose to work at a rate other than 30 frames per second (fps), how
do you convert to 30 fps? I deal with the question of frame rate
    conversion below.
You can create a Flash movie at 30 fps. But if is going to be
played back on a computer, a 30 fps .swf file will generally
produce unacceptably high data rates, unless the image is very
small and simple, or the computer it is playing on is very fast. It
can also create a lot of extra animation work if you want to draw
in-betweens for all 30 frames. Fortunately, there is no need to
build your Flash movie at 30 fps, even if you are planning to
    transfer it to video.
I usually build animation that needs to work on the web or
video at 12 fps. This gives us a good balance of lower data rates
and smoother animation. When creating cartoon style animation, it
also keeps our work consistent with the majority of broadcast
animation. While some high end cel animation is done at 24 frames
per second (the rate that film is projected at), much broadcast
animation is created at 12 fps. This is because it is drawn on
"2's." In other words, each image holds for 2 frames. Do the math
and it becomes clear why--half the amount of frames to draw each
second. While Disney and Dreamworks may have virtually unlimited
budgets to create their epic animations, most broadcast (and even
more so, Internet) productions are on very tight budgets. But even
the big studios do a lot of character animation on 2's. It looks
good that way, so why create twice the work?
If we are using flash to build a cartoon solely aimed at
broadcast or film, however, we build it at 24 fps. That way we can
animate on 2's for most of the character animation, but do animate
on 1's for segments or particular motions that require smoother
    animation.
If we are using Flash to build graphics for broadcast use
only, and so won't be hand drawing in betweens, we usually build
the file at 30 fps. This will give us the smoothest motion, and
data rate won't be an issue for you. It is also possible to even
build it at 60 fps, and convert this to a 30 fps video with fields
In the end, you can decide to build it at any rate you want.
The lower the rate, the smaller the file size, data rate and number
of frames to animate, but the less smooth the animation.
Conversely, the higher the frame rate, the higher the file size,
data rate and number of frames to animate, but with smoother
    animation.
    now I use
    FLASH VIDEO MX PRO
to covnert Video in multiple formats to FLV or SWF, I set the frame
size just as above, I always get soomth Flash
at the meantime, I have to set video rate when I use
    FLV To Video Convert
Pro to play the video in my iPod, if you set the wrong frame
rate, your iPod and other devices may not support the frame rate

Usually video quality has nothing with frame rate, but when
you convert flash to iPhone or other devices, you should think of
which frame rate video can your device play. when I convert .swf to
    iPhone with
    SWF to Video
Converter, as you know, iPhone can only support frame rate from
2 to 15 or a little more, I always choose 15. In this scare, frame
rate is higher, the quality is better.

  • What frame rate should I shoot?

This has been a nagging question I need to get answered. I have a JVC 700U and shoot football highlites and put the hour long show on the web. I would like to keep the file size as small as possible for obvious reasons but still maintain quality. I have been shooting in 720p 60 then editing in a 29.97 timeline. The 29.97 timeline keeps the exported H.264 smaller than the 59.94 timeline would. Should I keep the timeline 59.94?  Should I make the timeline 30p instead of 29.97? Also, what about shooting in 30p since my timeline is 29.97? (or 30p) As you can tell, I am very confused and just looking for the best combo? The camera does not offer 29.97 or 59.94 data rate.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. www.northcoastgameoftheweek.com
    Best.
    Tom

Should I keep the timeline 59.94?
You can if you want. Using a 29.97 timeline allows you to conform the 60p media to make slomo.
Should I make the timeline 30p instead of 29.97?
    No.
Also, what about shooting in 30p since my timeline is 29.97?
30p is 29.97 with segmented frames. I don't like it as a format.

  • What frame rate should I use?

I have started a new project. There is no one format that I will be using. The only constant is that I will be outputting to Blu Ray DVD. The content will include a mix of video, stills and motion graphics all about equally. I have traditionally used 29.97 for all my timelines. However, since my distribution will be primarily for Blu Ray players and/or H.264 for computer display, would my video quality benefit if I set up my editing timebase to be 60?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Blu-ray does not support 1080p60. It supports 1080i60 and 1080p24. If you wanted 60p, then you would use 720p60.
The problem with this issue is that a great deal of the public thinks that 1920x1080 is "1080p" without knowing what that means. So there is some confusion over 1080p60 in particular. Consumer cameras with that resolution and rate just appeared.

  • What music format should I choose for a download?

I am new to downloading music and haven't used iTunes. I bought a track at theclassicalshop.net and it is now asking what format I want to download it in: WMA, WAV, AIF. I don't have a clue which one. Then in another part of the screen I have a choice between WMA  and MP3.
I have an iMac, iPhone and iPad; no W******.
I would also like some background information on formats. I gather from other questions in the forum that iTunes uses AAC or something but that it is lossy, which doesn't sound good. But I also gather that iTunes can convert from and to other formats. Is there some reliable information on this subject somewheter someone could point me to? I would really appreciate it. I can't find anything on apple.com.

MP3 and AAC (M4a) are both lossy. WAV and AIFF files are non-lossy but are very much larger - impracticably so for most downloading purposes. iTunes does not handle WMA files.
MP3 and AAC quality can be perfectly reasonable as long as they are not compressed too much - purchased items are usually fine. You could download AIFF if you want to be fussy, though it's likely the difference won't be obvious unless you are using a good hifi system.
You could download as AIFF or WAV and convert to MP3 or AAc but there's no point at all in doing that if you can download an MP3 version. Note that if you download an MP3 version there is no point in converting to AIFF - all you will do is make the file size larger, it won't improve the quality at all.
AAC files are slightly better quality than MP3 at the equivalent bitrate, though again the difference is minimal and not likely to be obvious in most playback situations. You could compromise by downloading AIFF and converting to AAC if you want to keep the filesize on your Mac (and more to the point your iPod) down, though the download will be a long one as a result. This post explains how to do the conversion:

  • What MP4 Compressor settings should I choose for a 10 min 9GB QT video to be uploaded onto a website?

What MP4 settings should I choose for a 10 min 9GB QT video (exported from FCP) to be uploaded onto a website?
They said 'I've been trying to upload the video to our website but our IT contact has told me that it is too big.  Could you send the file in MP4 format compressed for web?'
Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
    Warm regards
    Peter

    Hi,
Go to Compressor inspector window>Encoder tab>Click Video: Settings button>In the window that comes up go to Data Rate and change the default 220 Kbits/sec to 150.
The resulting file (if DV, under a minute) will definiteltly be under 2MB and quality good enough. Remember that quality always depends on the source, the greater your original footage looks the better the compression result.

Sorry , but product is iPhone 5S

You can't buy from the Apple store online in the US because it is country specific and you firstly need a US credit card and then a US address and they won't ship outside of the US so you can't.
No Apple online store will ship outside the coutry.
If you want an iPhone, then you'll have to order via the Russian Apple store online if there is one, or you'll have to wait until it is released in your own country or go and buy one in Europe.

  • What frame-rate does your computer play 1080p video?

At what frame-rate do the Intel iMacs play 1080p videos? You can test this by doing a Get-Info while the clip is playing. The info window will show how many fps (frames per second) of video is being displayed.
Here's a link to some video clips, be sure to choose 1080p (not 720p or 480p):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/
    -thanks

My 17" Intel Core Duo 1.83 has no trouble playing the 1080 p at 24 fps, it ranges from 23.5 to 24.5 depending on the scene etc. Processor cores running at 60%.
The lower resolution 1080p (it said 1080p but was 1440 by 1080) Didn't even stutter (stayed at 24 fps) when I opened MS Word in Rosetta mode. Even opening Excel, FireFox, iTunes, and iPhoto at the same time and it dropped to 23 fps for about half a second and rebounded to 25.5 fps before settling back at 24 fps.
The true 1080p (1920x1080) dropped to 18 or 20 fps when other applications were opened. I should point out that these tests were run when the video was still downloading. And in some of the very high speed scenes it would drop to 18 or 20 frames/second for a short time (hardly noticeable). Other applications were running during this time as well. This was the 1080p version of http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/higherground.html
I should point out in 1080p the window is too large to fit on the screen of the 17" monitor. For the test I ran it with the image partially off the screen so it is running at native resolution (however it runs just as fast at any window size). 1080p is 1920 x 1080, so I imagine this is why the 20" is recommended for 1080p. If you have QuickTime Pro you can watch it full screen mode.

  • What frame rate?

What frame rate & key frames settings should I export my HD video in? Any other setting suggestions to get the highest quality HD video would greatly be appreciated.

    Hi
    A. Can You set key-frame rate in iMovie'08 - Didn't know this. In FinalCut Yes.
I set same as project requires.
    B. 25 fps = PAL interlaced for TV. 29.97 = NTSC for TV
    For 720i and 720p resp 1080i or p - Don't know. My guess 25/50 or 29.97/60.

You've been infected by a scam trojan.  You don't need any anti-virus software on your Mac.  See the following about getting rid of the trojan.
    Trojan War
If you discover a trojan program is running on your computer then look to the following information for assistance:
    1. A recent discussion on the Apple Support Communities: MacDefender Trojan.
    2. An excellent site devoted to Mac Malware: Macintosh Virus Guide
    3. Another site for removing MacDefende, et.al.: MAC Defender Rogue Anti-Virus analysis and Removal
    4. A new removal utility - MacDefenderKiller
Removing strange software can be a task.  The following outlines various ways of uninstalling software:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a Startup item or a Log In item.  Startup items are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the Delete [-] button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Note that you must have this software installed before you install software you may need to uninstall.  Uninstallers won't work if you install them after the fact.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them and others at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on removing software and dealing with spyware and malware.
After removing all the components of the software you may have to restart the computer to fully disable the software.  This will be the case when removing software that has installed a daemon.  After the daemon has been removed you need to restart the computer to stop the daemon.  Alternatively, you can kill the daemon process using the Terminal application or Activity Monitor.
