What frame rate should I shoot?

This has been a nagging question I need to get answered. I have a JVC 700U and shoot football highlites and put the hour long show on the web. I would like to keep the file size as small as possible for obvious reasons but still maintain quality. I have been shooting in 720p 60 then editing in a 29.97 timeline. The 29.97 timeline keeps the exported H.264 smaller than the 59.94 timeline would. Should I keep the timeline 59.94?  Should I make the timeline 30p instead of 29.97? Also, what about shooting in 30p since my timeline is 29.97? (or 30p) As you can tell, I am very confused and just looking for the best combo? The camera does not offer 29.97 or 59.94 data rate.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. www.northcoastgameoftheweek.com
Best.
Tom

Should I keep the timeline 59.94?
You can if you want. Using a 29.97 timeline allows you to conform the 60p media to make slomo.
Should I make the timeline 30p instead of 29.97?
No.
Also, what about shooting in 30p since my timeline is 29.97?
30p is 29.97 with segmented frames. I don't like it as a format.

  • What frame rate should you build your Flash file at?

Every second of video has 30 frames. But Flash animations can
be done at any frame rate, which raises a couple of important
questions:what frame rate should you work at, and second, if you
choose to work at a rate other than 30 frames per second (fps), how
do you convert to 30 fps? I deal with the question of frame rate
    conversion below.
You can create a Flash movie at 30 fps. But if is going to be
played back on a computer, a 30 fps .swf file will generally
produce unacceptably high data rates, unless the image is very
small and simple, or the computer it is playing on is very fast. It
can also create a lot of extra animation work if you want to draw
in-betweens for all 30 frames. Fortunately, there is no need to
build your Flash movie at 30 fps, even if you are planning to
    transfer it to video.
I usually build animation that needs to work on the web or
video at 12 fps. This gives us a good balance of lower data rates
and smoother animation. When creating cartoon style animation, it
also keeps our work consistent with the majority of broadcast
animation. While some high end cel animation is done at 24 frames
per second (the rate that film is projected at), much broadcast
animation is created at 12 fps. This is because it is drawn on
"2's." In other words, each image holds for 2 frames. Do the math
and it becomes clear why--half the amount of frames to draw each
second. While Disney and Dreamworks may have virtually unlimited
budgets to create their epic animations, most broadcast (and even
more so, Internet) productions are on very tight budgets. But even
the big studios do a lot of character animation on 2's. It looks
good that way, so why create twice the work?
If we are using flash to build a cartoon solely aimed at
broadcast or film, however, we build it at 24 fps. That way we can
animate on 2's for most of the character animation, but do animate
on 1's for segments or particular motions that require smoother
    animation.
If we are using Flash to build graphics for broadcast use
only, and so won't be hand drawing in betweens, we usually build
the file at 30 fps. This will give us the smoothest motion, and
data rate won't be an issue for you. It is also possible to even
build it at 60 fps, and convert this to a 30 fps video with fields
In the end, you can decide to build it at any rate you want.
The lower the rate, the smaller the file size, data rate and number
of frames to animate, but the less smooth the animation.
Conversely, the higher the frame rate, the higher the file size,
data rate and number of frames to animate, but with smoother
    animation.
    now I use
    FLASH VIDEO MX PRO
to covnert Video in multiple formats to FLV or SWF, I set the frame
size just as above, I always get soomth Flash
at the meantime, I have to set video rate when I use
    FLV To Video Convert
Pro to play the video in my iPod, if you set the wrong frame
rate, your iPod and other devices may not support the frame rate

Usually video quality has nothing with frame rate, but when
you convert flash to iPhone or other devices, you should think of
which frame rate video can your device play. when I convert .swf to
    iPhone with
    SWF to Video
Converter, as you know, iPhone can only support frame rate from
2 to 15 or a little more, I always choose 15. In this scare, frame
rate is higher, the quality is better.

  • What frame-rate should I choose for iOS devices ?

    Hi there,
I have my project set to 60FPS. everything looks smooth and fine  when testing on the iphone 4s.
I don't have a 3G to test on yet, should I leave the framerate as 60FPS for 3g or lower it?
I don't really understand how to determine what to set the framerate for best performance or even if it matters.
Just after some clarification about what to set the framerate to.
    Thanks

Yes release is same as non-debug
Okay I finally get your question.
The idea is to keep a value for fps that meets your requirement. Using a value higher than this wastes resources. A simple example would be running an application at 60 fps that is an enterprise application which is clearly wasteful. For your scrolling usecase, if your performance requirement is of 40 fps then keep framerate at 40. Now two things can happen either your device will have enough juice to run at 40 fps or it won't have. If it has the juice it will run at 40 fps no issues. But if it does not have enough juice then it won't and cause stutter. In such a case raising the framerate to 60 will serve no purpose, because that relatively slower device could not scroll at 40 fps, no chance of it to scroll at 60 fps. You should not concern yourself to keep different framerates for different devices. Keep the framerate at a value that meets your requirement, if the underlying device can play at that fps it will play, otherwise it will stutter.
To answer your original question, no you will not get smoother scrolling on a lower frame rate.

  • What frame rate should I use?

I have started a new project. There is no one format that I will be using. The only constant is that I will be outputting to Blu Ray DVD. The content will include a mix of video, stills and motion graphics all about equally. I have traditionally used 29.97 for all my timelines. However, since my distribution will be primarily for Blu Ray players and/or H.264 for computer display, would my video quality benefit if I set up my editing timebase to be 60?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Blu-ray does not support 1080p60. It supports 1080i60 and 1080p24. If you wanted 60p, then you would use 720p60.
The problem with this issue is that a great deal of the public thinks that 1920x1080 is "1080p" without knowing what that means. So there is some confusion over 1080p60 in particular. Consumer cameras with that resolution and rate just appeared.

  • What frame-rate does your computer play 1080p video?

At what frame-rate do the Intel iMacs play 1080p videos? You can test this by doing a Get-Info while the clip is playing. The info window will show how many fps (frames per second) of video is being displayed.
Here's a link to some video clips, be sure to choose 1080p (not 720p or 480p):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/
    -thanks

My 17" Intel Core Duo 1.83 has no trouble playing the 1080 p at 24 fps, it ranges from 23.5 to 24.5 depending on the scene etc. Processor cores running at 60%.
The lower resolution 1080p (it said 1080p but was 1440 by 1080) Didn't even stutter (stayed at 24 fps) when I opened MS Word in Rosetta mode. Even opening Excel, FireFox, iTunes, and iPhoto at the same time and it dropped to 23 fps for about half a second and rebounded to 25.5 fps before settling back at 24 fps.
The true 1080p (1920x1080) dropped to 18 or 20 fps when other applications were opened. I should point out that these tests were run when the video was still downloading. And in some of the very high speed scenes it would drop to 18 or 20 frames/second for a short time (hardly noticeable). Other applications were running during this time as well. This was the 1080p version of http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/higherground.html
I should point out in 1080p the window is too large to fit on the screen of the 17" monitor. For the test I ran it with the image partially off the screen so it is running at native resolution (however it runs just as fast at any window size). 1080p is 1920 x 1080, so I imagine this is why the 20" is recommended for 1080p. If you have QuickTime Pro you can watch it full screen mode.

  • What frame rate?

What frame rate & key frames settings should I export my HD video in? Any other setting suggestions to get the highest quality HD video would greatly be appreciated.

    Hi
    A. Can You set key-frame rate in iMovie'08 - Didn't know this. In FinalCut Yes.
I set same as project requires.
    B. 25 fps = PAL interlaced for TV. 29.97 = NTSC for TV
    For 720i and 720p resp 1080i or p - Don't know. My guess 25/50 or 29.97/60.

  • What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?

What Frame Rate does Catalyst export .SWF at?
When I import a SWF file from Catalyst into another flash program, won't display never mind play, the error I get is that the frame rates don't match,
therefore I need to know what  frame rate it exports at?

If you have a SWF created by Catalyst, and you're using that SWF in something you're creating with Flash Builder or Flash Pro, then I think frame rate shouldn't matter. But maybe if you can give more details I could help more... Which flash program are you importing the SWF into, what commands or code are you using to do the import? Is there an error message or alert, if so what does it say? Any info you can provide will be helpful.
    Thanks

  • What frame rate timeline should I use for 1080p 60fps premiere pro

When using 1080p 60fps clips what sequence should I use when creating a timeline that would work the best for slow mo application?
I read that you should use a 24 fps timeline but i'm not sure?
Also I have a few 720 @ 120 fps, should I create a separate sequence for that and what kind of timeline should I use since cs5 only has 1080 @ 60fps option?

24 is a good frame rate for most animations but some people like 30 and for the max stress on user systems and animation smoothness, use 60.

  • What Color Space Should I Shoot In.

First, I'll admit that the entire color management aspect of photography/monitors/printing, is a bit too dense for me to completely comprehend. However, I do have some working knowledge of it. So, here's my pre-LR setup.
I shoot in sRGB and used Photoshop Elements or RSE or DPP to process the RAW or JPG shots. I export in sRGB and do not allow the printer to Color Manage (I use Windows, BTW) If I send to a lab, I do not use any ICC profiles, as I cannot soft proof, so I let the lab use their profiles. My monitor is calibrated using a Pantone Heuy (I know, not as sophisticated as a Spyder, but what I see on the screen matches what I shot, so I'm happy with it.
Now. I will be using LR exclusively for processing my photos. What should I set my camera to? I can use AdobeRGB or sRGB. I realize that LR uses ProPhoto, so I'm not sure where my shooting choice adds or subtracts from the equationand I'm still not sure what settings to print in. I can easily try to let LR translate or manage my file when sending to my home printer. How should I prepare a photo for sending to a lab?
    What should I shoot in?
Should I do anything to the LR color space I work in?
What should I do, in regards to color space for printing?
    Thaks,
    Steven (the confused)

Thanks, Ian. For some unknown reason, I had some time ago set up my user name as one of my e-mail addies, and then when I became active on the LR forums, was too occupied to deal with it, until I learned it was easier than pie. And much easier than pi. 3.414x, no?
I'm leaving in an altered non-robotical-vulnerable format for a bit, so that those that knew me as the E-mail address, or McPhotoman in the beta forum can either listen to what I say, or avoid my postings.... Cheers.

  • Which format and frame rate should I use?

So I have worked here and there with final cut to make videos for live projections at music shows, but now I want to take it more seriously. Since I have done it randomly I didn't mind taking the time to render constantly and figure it out as I go. But now I want to work on larger projects, like making music videos, a little more consistently and want things to run a little faster.
Basically I have about 200 gb of random footage. Or about 400 little videos. Very little of it is actually shot with a camera on my own. Most of it is collected video from either other people, or downloaded off the internet. Tons of things that are in the public domain that I want to use. My videos are pretty fast paced, almost seizure inducing sort of effects. I layer videos with each other and throw filters on everything. The problem is, the rendering is taking so much time out of everything. Is there a way for me to get around the rendering? Either by a certain setting within final cut, or just by converting all my video to one format? If I had to I would invest the time to convert every single video I have to some sort of format that would allow me to work faster. If so, which format should I use? Frame rate? etc.
I would just like to get this out of the way so in the future I can convert videos to the right format. Just to allow some sort of flow within my workspace.

  • What frame rates does FCP 7 support?

The manual does not mention 1080p60 once while it enumerates virtually every other resolution, frame rate and interlaced/progressive that typical camcorders can record. I thought that meant it did not support 1080p60, but it is clear from several posts here that it does support it. Does FCP 7 support 1080p60 with some restrictions? Does FCP 7 support any frame rate--say 5,000 frames a second that a high speed camera might generate? Thanks, Dennis

It supports 1080p60...that is 1080p at 60fps (because 1080i60 means 29.97 fps)...but you have to modify things. That is a non-standard format. BluRay discs don't play that, only one high end tape format supports that format. Because of this lack of real support for this format, barring very high end, it isn't a general setting in FCP.
yes, there are cameras that shoot that format. And I suppose they are meant to have you play back from the camera, or SD card player (some BluRay players do this).
Does FCP 7 support any frame rate--say 5,000 frames a second that a high speed camera might generate?
FCP supports editing of professional broadcast formats. Cameras that shoot 5000fps, generally are meant to then output that to one of the broadcast formats...23.98, 29.97. Thus getting that slow motion. You don't edit 5000fps. NO editing app edits 5000fps. It gets converted to the proper frame rate, then edited. The Phantom camera files are converted for editing.

  • What frame rate to use in iMovie?

My digital camera takes movie clips at a rate of 30FPS even though it is set to PAL as I live in the UK. When making a movie in iMovie I have to choose PAL or NTSC but it says PAL is 25fps. Should I set to NTSC which is 30fps the same as the original recording and if so when I burn to DVD will it play properly on my DVD connected to the TV.

I've looked at the specifications of both those cameras. Both record at 30 fps. I couldn't see any reference to settings for PAL versus NTSC.
The Fuji records video at 1280 x 720, which is a HD format. There are also settings for SD formats - 640 x 480 and 320 x 240. All formats record at 30 fps.
The Sony records video up to 640 x 480 resolution in MPEG-4 format at 30 fps, according to one review I looked at.
So, it appears that you are stuck with 30 fps which is consistent with most point and shoot digital still cameras. My wife's Canon IXUS 80IS is also restricted to 30 fps.
You will get best results by setting your iMovie project to NTSC 30 fps. Choosing PAL 25 fps in iMovie will also be acceptable, but you may notice some slight stuttering in scenes with a fair amount of motion.
I've edited some projects from the Canon's clips using the NTSC setting in iMovie (and I'm also in PAL country). The DVDs played back OK on one of my DVD players, but not on another. I understand that most PAL DVD players will play back NTSC DVDs on PAL TVs. But the reverse is true in the USA - the NTSC sets generally don't work with PAL DVDs.
Your best bet will be to create short test projects and burn these to DVDs. Try iMovie settings for both PAL and NTSC. If using iDVD to produce the test DVDs be sure to select the same setting (although iDVD will probably default to the setting of your iMovie project).

  • In what frame rate (fps) iMovie for iOS exports videos?

I shot two similar clips with an iPhone 6. One in 30fps and the other in 60fps just to see how much smoother would the slow motion be in iMovie. The clip shot in 60fps worked great even when slowed down by 1/2. The odd thing was, that when i reset both clips to normal, original speed and whatched the movie in in full screen in iMovie, I noticed that the smoothness of the clip shot in 60fps is gone and both clips look like they were shot in 24fps or 30fps.
So my question is, in what framerate iMovie exports projects? And is there a way to export in 60fps?
    Thank you for your help!

Sadly it appears that ALL exports are converted to 30p only incuding Prores !, some like iCloud Sharing are even less 720/30p 5Mbps
True for iMovie for iOS and latest iMovie for Mac that does not have anymore "export to Quicktime" that enabled 60p export

  • Sequence settings for varied Frame Rates

Greetings.  I am new to Premiere Pro and also new to working with different frame rates in the same project.  I am using footage from a Canon Vixia HF S10 and Flip video MinoHD.
The frame rate of the Canon .MTS files seems to be 60fps.  The frame rate in the Flip .mp4 seems to be 24fps.  In other projects in FCP, I've converted the .MTS files to Mp4, but I'm not sure if that is necessary in PP5.5.
    My questions are:
    1. At what frame rate should I set my sequence?
    2. Is is advisable to convert the .MTS files and if so should I do so to match the Mg4 files exactly?
    3. What other pertinent information should I have to optimize quality?
I appreciate any guidance without judgement on my limited knowledge .
    Thank You ~ L

You might convert to an intermediate codec that isn't as demanding as AVCHD or MPEG4. Do you have Prores as an option? It might be a pain pre-processing, but your editing will go smoother.

  • Frame rate, Timer & Delay

    Hi,
i am still new to flash CS3 and i want to know about
something about frame rate(default 12 fps) under the properties
TAB. IF i am to create a flash board game, what frame rate should
be set for optimum performance? i am using webservice to set and
get data to SQL Server database. As webservice is passive pull
technology, i am using Timers to constantly get DATA from SQL
server after a SET event. Also, i found out that multiple Timers
with multiple delays will cause some unsuccesful updates or insert
to database, why is it so? Hope to have a reply asap. Thx.

Jon, when you convert AVI>MP4, does that compress the AVI at all or keep it the same quality as the original AVI
File size is directly proportional to the total data rate used. If the same total data rate is used for both files, them the final file size will be roughly the same. As to the case of quality where the files are the same size, this would depend on relative efficiency of the two video codecs involved. In the case of my tests, I used an H.264 video codec at slightly less than the original AVI video codec and did not note any visual difference between the two. However, I did convert to stereo (i.e., two mono channels) at twice the original audio data rate so my target file ended up 90 KBs larger.
If you have QT Pro and want to go the "extra mile," remember that you only need to convert an AVI compression format that is not already "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 to get it to import. In the case of my test file, the AVI contained M-JPEG video with DVI ADPCM audio so I could have simply exported the Adaptive AVI PCM to a Linear PCM (AIFF) file, extracted the already compatible M-JPEG track, and used the "Add to Selection & Scale" option to re-merge the original video with the converted audio to produce an iMovie '08 "edit" compatible file for import with no loss in video quality.
