What framerate to choose for: PAL@25p 1440x1080 for Blu-Ray?

Hi there,
I just found some topics that there is no 25p possible for the (PAL) Blu-Ray standart. But I shot my film native in 25p PAL. Now I wanna make a progessive Blu-Ray for PAL Filmfests (like a progressive DVD). So what frame presets would I choose that encore offers me?:
25i (but I don't want the video look since we spend enough time and money on lighting shooting my short;-).
50p (I have no idea what that would make the film look like, probably "fluid" motion like 25i?)
Or should I just use an NTSC preset with 24p (which is closer to 25p than 30p or 50p), since most PAL Blu-Ray players and PAL TV Sets can playback NTSC?
Thanks in advance,
Martin

anything interlaced not High Definition by definition
That confuses me.  1920 x 1080 has 30i as a defined standard for ATSC, and 25i for PAL.  This applies to both broadcast and Blu-ray specifications.
Hi Jim.
The point I am trying to make is that anything interlaced should just not be called High Definition, simnply because no matter how many pixels there are, it just is not high definition - it's interlaced. You know as well as I do there is far more than pixel count to definition!!!
Martin HJA wrote: So like I said, the 24p thing is the frame rate to go (at least for progressive 25p PAL footage). But the question is, when I start a new Encore CS5 projekt, I have to choose if NTSC or PAL. 24p is only availible in NTSC so I guess I have to just use that projece setting right? (for a PAL 24p version) Or do do I choose PAL and then just a transcode setting that has 24p in it afterwards befor transcoding (custom setting?). In this case, WHAT FRAMERATE do I choose when creating a PAL project (since you have to choose 50p or 25i)? Or does choosing the project setting in the beginning doesn't matter since one can choose different transcode setting afterwards (custom ones)?
Hi Martin.
You have no choice but to select NTSC, even though it is meaningless at 1920x1080/24p resolution, as the only way to do it in 25fps is interlaced, which is written as 50i or 25i depending on what side of the Atlantic you are on. They both mean the same thing, really.
Selecting PAL will only give you access to a frame rate of 25 or 50 which is insanity really. Frankly, Blu-Ray is a bit of a mess all round.

  • Best codec for a FCP7 project to Blu-Ray master?

I have a project that was shot in HDV and edited in FCP7. I need to take a file to a Post house for a Blu-Ray master for a theatre screening. Can I export to ProRes 422 HQ.mov to get the best quality? I am trying to get the best results that I can, visually. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
I looked through the forum but didn't see anything that address this.

    Hi Semen,
I am taking a ProRess 422 (HQ) file to my Post House today. I spoke with them and they think that file will be fine. I know on DigiBeta they had asked, originally, for a 10 bit file - I can't remember the issues but it was easier to export the ProRes file. I will post the results of what I find - once I've view the output Blu-Ray at the Post House - on Thursday.

  • What are the settings for video output to consumer blu-ray DVD players?

I have a Maya animation rendered at 1920 x 1080.  There is no audio yet, butI will create SFX for the audio track. The animation was rendered for 24 fps viewing, but in truth I don't think I would notice if the playback was 23.97 fps.  I have Premeire Elements 7 and there are no pre-sets for HD or Blu-Ray.  It's not clear to me that I can do this in Elements 11 either or if I need to buy Premeire Pro to do what I want.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Thanks Ann.
I know I'll need to upgrade.  Since my editing needs are infrequent I just wanted to find out if I had to spring for Pro or if Elements11 would do.  Also, I'm trying to figure out what the settings should be.  I read about 24fps progressive (for film?) and 23.97 fps progress (for video?).  It is a short animation that I want to loop for a Point of Purchase video display.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

  • Workflow asked: 70min hd project (PAL 1080i50)to blue ray disc with toast 11

i tried to render a final cut Pro HD project (PAL 1080i50) into a blue ray disc with toast 11.
At the end camera pans juddered in a fast rhythm
    My steps are:
build a HD timeline in FCP
export timeline to a quicktime movie
load the quicktime movie in Toast 11
toast dit convert the qtm-file again
and burned the blue ray with the result described above.
    Thanks for answers

Please examine my workflow. Perhaps you quickly find out any error:
footage: PAL 1080i50 field order : lower field
70 minutes sequence: the same options
exported timeline into a Quicktime Movie - same option
loaded the resulting QTM into Toast 11
Tost started to rerender during 2 hours and burned blue ray disc
    at last
medium: verbatim double layer blue-ray disc
Player: tested on two Philips blue ray players
    Result
on tv-screen (hd flat screen philips) camera pans judder in a regular rhythm, perhaps twice in a second: the actor seems making little jumps when he walks silently from the right to the left or vice versa.
earlyer we tried to burn a blue ray disc directly from FCP 7.0.3 by using the option "send to blue ray"
    The result was the same.

  • Best Compressor 3.5 Settings For Blu Ray Authoring in Roxio Toast

I want to export a 2 hour FCP7 project for eventual burning onto blu ray (BD-R DL) disk using Roxio Toast and I was wondering what are the settings in Compressor 3.5 to be able to achieve the absolute best quality file to take into Roxio?
As an aside, is Compressor even required for this or can I import the full res FCP7.mov file?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about this, but you may only be able to use h.264 for video to make a blu-ray inside of Compressor.
I would suggest encoding in MPEG-2/AC3 in Compressor and then using Toast to author and burn.

  • Optimal Quicktime Export Settings For Eventual Burning to Blu-Ray DVD

Hello. We currently have a huge backlog of FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD projects created in 720p and 1080i formats. While we all await FCP and DVD Pro support of the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD burning, in the mean time, what are the optimal Quicktime Export settings to get best possible rendering of my existing FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD in preparation for eventual transfer to Blu-Ray DVD for best possible viewing on my large screen LCD TV via Blu-Ray DVD player. I'd like to get to work exporting all my movies into the optimal Quicktime format in preparation for 1080p Blu-Ray.
For example, I have been creating FCE projects in a 1080i 60fps format. Once completed I typically have been exporting a "Full Quality" stand-alone movie. Is that what's optimal for the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD format, or something else? For example, what about interlacing? Should I be "de-interlacing" my outputted quicktime movies for better playback in the Blu-Ray 1080p format? What other things should I be considering.

Full quality sounds like you'll be safe. Keep in mind that WHEN DVDSP gets Blu-ray support, it will be able to do al the encoding itself. I do know that the next generation DVDs are using MPEG4 or VC1 compression instead of MPEG2 like standard DVDs are today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VC-1 That being said, I don't believe that Compressor has a VC-1 encoder, but it definitely has H.264, so if you wanted to do the encode yourself, I guess you could pick that and be set. I would do some research on the technology behind Blu-ray and then base an encode on what you find. There's also MANY threads on here about this already, so Search is your friend and use it to get more info.
Good luck and don't forget to rate if this was helpful,

  • Blu Ray:Eventual File Format Compatibility for DVD Studio Pro?  Time Frame?

    Hello There,
A couple of questions for those of you who might be in the loop regarding Blu Ray authoring development plans for DVDSP:
    1. A time frame?
    2. When Blu Ray authoring is possible with DVDSP, does anyone know what video file formats DVDSP will accept? Will it be MPEG HD? Will it be H.264? Or will it be both? Might it be neither?
I'm trying to make some hardware decisions for encoding, so if anyone has the inside skinny on answers to these questions, fantastic.
    Thanks,

    TOU?
Term of Use of the Boards
When I said I'm evaluating equipment, I wasn't referring to a workstation, but a real time encoding card that I'm purchasing for additional reasons. If I knew which Blu-ray codec(s) Apple would commit to for DVDSP, (H.264 and/or HD MPEG-2), is would help to ease my decision.
You should probably look more towards whether (a) the card will be Mac compatible in general (if you are looking for one for the Mac and (b) whether the card supports all the formats which are supported by blu-ray. The reason being, though one would assume that any software to make blu-ray discs would support all proper encodes, it may not be the case. Doubtful, but you never know.
Adobe Encore and Avid have been supporting Blu-ray since last fall. It makes me think that Apple really isn't "in it to win it" insofar as professional DVD Authoring is concerned, which is too bad because I've made an initial commitment to DVDSP for a rather labor intensive workflow.
No comment But the issue has been discussed before. Apple will do what Apple thinks is proper. If they do blu-ray (again not thoughts as to where they are now) I am sure it will be done right. blu-ray and HD are new still and you can see players are not even 100%. The Blue Planet, an HD DVD, had issues on players. And blu-ray has some of the same issues. In other words if people with alot of resource$ are having an issue because the area is still a bit of the wild west...

  • Looking for Trayless/Slot Load Blu-Ray DVD players

Looking for a list of the Trayless/Slot Load Blu-Ray DVD players. Are there any for under $100? (or near that)

Rwillen, i agree with you. What TVLOVER said has to be one of the funniest things I have heard in a few weeks. Plus how would a Stand Alone players eye last longer then a PS3 eye? They both work in the exact same manner. And dont give me any bs about the eyes in stand alones are better design and quality then those found in the PS3. Because that is false. If anything the PS3 would use the better eye due to the more use they are subjected to. I have owned 2 PS3's since they were launched. BOTH were used for heavy gaming and the Blu-Ray from day 1. Guess what? My original FAT PS3 is still alive and kicking just fine. So over 7 years of use on that thing and not a single issue other then the bluetooth board went out. But I knew how to repair electronics ordered a new board for 30 dollars and it was as good as new.
But I have always recommended the PS3 over a blu-ray system due to its ALOT more future proof then a stand alone player is. It has the ability to do more then a stand alone player, and the price makes it worth it over a stand alone. Because while people around me were buying new Blu-Ray players due to the Blu-Ray spec changing and evolving in its early days. My PS3 with just a free software update got all the same features that people had to trash their "older" models to get. And dont forget about the encryption keys. Your at the mercy of the company to continue to make new firmware to keep the keys updated to play new movies. Not so much of a worry for the PS3 as it will still be around for a long time.

Go to the company's website, and look for "technical support" or "downloads".  Too, if you read a post extolling the virtues of that optical drive with a MBA, you could send the poster an email and ask about a driver.

  • Best workflow for footage in 1440x1080 and vid rate 23.98fps going to a PAL DVD player in europe

I am new at this and still getting a grasp of the technical details.  I've made several trips to Germany over the last three years and each time have shot using different settings.  Right now I am editing the footage from the first year where I shot 1080i and 24p (Canon XHA1).  I've already sent some DVDs with films I edited from this trip, but not sure I've achieved the best result that I can in terms of image quality.  What i think i've been doing so far is to edit in the original NTSC, and then when i get ready to burn the DVD to send to my relatives in Germany, I have set the Project Info settings in iDVD to PAL.  But from reading the boards I am getting the sense that there are multiple ways to do this, each with varying results.  Obviously, I'd like to have my German viewers view a DVD with the best quality picture, and am wondering what is the best way to go about this.  I've also read on the boards that most PAL dvd players will play NTSC, which makes me wonder if burning the DVD with iDVD set to PAL is necessary.  I've already been told by one of my relatives who has viewed the same film here in america (burned as NTSC) and in Germany (one I sent burned as PAL), that the PAL versions did not have as good a picture quality.  Any suggestions?
Also, if you knew that your primary audience was going to be PAL viewers, and you are shooting with an NTSC camera, what would the ideal settings be?  On my canon xha1, my frame rate options are 60i, 30f, and 24f.  My 'comp out' options are 480i and 080i/480i.  My understanding is 1080i50 would be better for PAL, but 25fps is not an option on my camera.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well it must be 24 over 29.97 then because it is working with it.  I have been able to create timelines and export quicktime movies, etc.  The item properties (in FCE Browser) of the clips definitely say 23.98fps-- as I would expect because I know I had the camera set to 24p.  However, the frame rate of the sequences i've been editing on say 29.97.  This is without me having made any conscious effort to manipulate any settings for the sequences at the outset-- I didn't even know the sequences had settings for this when i started.  I just began dragging and dropping footage out of the browser and it must have automatically set the sequence to 29.97.  Who knows what I had the Easy Set up set to when i brought the footage over from my camera two years ago.  I knew even less then.  Are the settings on Easy Set up critical when bringing the footage onto your computer from your camera?  What processes are the Easy set up settings governing?
Even with all of that said, you would recommend burning the DVD as an NTSC?  An NTSC in a new PAL DVD player will look better than an NTSC burned as a PAL?  I suppose I could send them both versions and see which one looks better.
    Thanks for you help Tom.
    P.S.
On the true 24p issue, I did find this:
There are many posts out there about the Canon XH A1 not having "true 24p".
I think much of that misinformation out there maybe stemmed from (correct me if I'm wrong):
Canon Frame Mode on the standard DV cams was a "simulation: of the 24 frame look.
The Canon HDV 24p actually records each single frame progressively, but using an interlaced method.
