What frequency is AirPlay when a 2nd gen Express joins a 1st gen Extreme?

I'm guessing the 2nd gen Express drops down to 2.4Ghz instead of utilitizing the 5Ghz it is capable of.  Correct?  I've been noticing some long drop offs and only solution is to unplug the Express (not the Extreme) and then it works fine again.  I assume this is an interference issue that could likely be fixed if the Express was running at 5Ghz -- and requiring a more modern Extreme running 5Ghz.

Thanks for the confirmation!

What are you trying to AirPlay to? The AirPlay icon only appears if you have an AirPlay receiver ready to accept the media from the iPod.
Also, see the following. The 2G not hot have iOS 4.3 or higher.
From the Videos, iPod, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps on iOS devices, stream videos, music, and photos to an Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), or stream music to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
With iOS 4.3 and later, you can also stream video and audio from a website or a third-party app installed on your iOS device if the developer for the app or website has added AirPlay functionality.

What is the max memory a 2nd Gen iMac (2008) can support and if it is more than 2GB, where can you purchase?

Go to Crucial.com or OWC, you will get good advice and good memory suitable for Macs.

  • Which airport is better, 2nd gen express or 2nd gen extreme

I use an older 2nd generation airport extreme on the 2nd floor of my house and needed another to cover another portion of the house and recently bought a 2nd gen airport express to extend it.
My question is, which is better(more powerful) to use as the main wifi hub: the 2nd generation extreme or the 2nd generation express?

The 2nd Gen AirPort Express is a simultaneous dual band product, which will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network. The 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme cannot do this. For what it is worth, the 2nd Gen Express is capable of higher wireless speeds than the 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme as well.
If you use the 2nd Gen Express as the "main" router, you will have the benefit of dual band performance for devices that connect to the AirPort Express in the main area.  If you have any 5 GHz capable devices, they will connect at higher speeds than other devices as well because of the dual band capability of the Express.
The 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme is not simultaneous dual band capable, so it will extend only one band from the AirPort Express, likely the 2.4 GHz band since it is the stronger signal.
It probably does not make much sense to use the 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme as the main router, since the Express will only be able to extend one band from the AirPort Extreme, since that is all that it can produce at one time.  On the other hand, if you are happy with the AirPort Extreme as the main router, and you are not looking for higher speed capability in the main area, you could continue to use the Extreme as your main router.  It does look more impressive.
As far as rated signal strength, you might be surprised to learn that Apple rates the smaller 2nd Gen Express as having just a bit higher signal output power than the 2nd Gen Extreme.
One question though....other than the modem, how many devices do you plan to connect using a wired Ethernet connection to your "main" router?

  • 2nd Gen Extreme vs Newest Airport Extreme

I have been using a 2nd gen AirPort Extreme for 6 years now, and up until recently it worked fine. Recently, though, it seems like its range has shortened, speeds have dropped, and have to reset it often. Last night I was watching a movie on Netflix on my Apple TV (right next to the airport), and I lost the connection 6 times. I have called Comcast, and they say everything is fine on their end.
My question is this: will the newest AirPort Extreme provide me with more range and speed? I have no ac compatible devices, and but will I see a huge difference with this newer model? Should I just get another brand (not apple) wireless-n router instead? I am normally quite competent with computers, but wifi issues always stump me. The 2nd gen extreme is dual band, but both can't be used at the same time. With a newer router that allows for both bands, which devices should I put on which band? I've got two apple TVs, three MacBooks (1 Blackbook, 1Late 2011 Pro, 1 2007 MacBook) two iPhones, an ipad, a galaxy S3, and a PS3 to deal with. Also, and the answer may be obvious but humor me, I have comcast's performance internet (20Mbps/5Mbps). Is this not enough for what I'm working with?
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Don't do that. Decide which one of your AirPort Base Stations is to serve as your router. Connect that one, and no others, to the modem. Connect all the others to it, and configure them as bridges.

  • Communication errors when iPod 2nd gen connected to car stereo

So a while back I ultimately decided to update my 2nd gen iPod touch from iOS 3.1.3 to the highest it'll support, which I believe is iOS 4.2.1. The update went fine, and everything seemed to be working alright until I plugged it into my car's stereo as I normally do while going to work and back. I'll detail the problem below.
The stereo is aftermarket, a Pioneer unit, which is probably considered really old by today's standards but for me it still works beautifully. I plug the iPod in via the USB port it has. Before updating the iPod, there were no problems. After the update, specific songs on the iPod will trigger an "Error-19" to display on the screen of the stereo, and all control of the iPod ceases to function. The error refers to a communication error of some sort between the iPod and the stereo. Now the strange thing is that even though this error pops up, the iPod will continue to play the song that caused the error and proceed to the next track when it's done. I have my iPod playing on shuffle so when this error comes up I have to wait for the song to finish and hope the next one doesn't trip the error again when I unplug and plug the iPod back in. Doing that while the song is still playing just produces the same error. Ifthe next track is fine, plugging it back in restores all function.
So while this error isn't the end of the world, it's a brain teaser that's been irking me for a few weeks now. I'm hoping someone may know if something within iOS was changed between 3.x and 4.2.1 that might cause this type of communication error to come up. I originally thought it may have something to do with ID3 tags and some rogue setting that confuses the stereo when it's sent over, but I couldn't really find any major difference between songs that work perfectly fine and those that cause the error to show up. I'm at a loss here so any isight would be appreciated.
Also of note, I am aware that upgrading to a newer stereo or newer iPod will undoubtedly fix this, but I don't really have a need to spend money replacing equipment that is still in working order. Thanks for your time.

    Sometimes this works:
    - Reset the car system
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If not then contact the Pioneer. Maybe there is a firmware update available for the car system.
Yes, other users have reported that updated to iOS 4 broke compatibility with some care systems.

  • Airplay Issue on 2nd Gen Ipod with Apple TV

I recently did the upgrade for the new Apple TV. Since that upgrade, my 2nd generation iPod running iOS 4.2 will not stream video to the apple tv. The video won't even start up. However, I can stream audio fine. This all worked fine prior to the Apple TV upgrade. Any one else see this issue?

You guys are right, I meant Apple TV 4.2....
I was able to stream video on my 2nd Gen Ipod Touch(1.4.2) prior to the Apple TV 4.2 upgrade. I was able to stream youtube and my videos that I had stored on my ipod. These were not 3rd party video's. They were all videos that I converted to mov and transfered to itunes and then to my iPod. This WORKED perfectly fine prior to the Apple TV upgrade. It is as though this new AppleTV 4.2 upgrade made me lose this functionality to stream video. Mr. Prime Minister, this did work!
I am just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue. I can stream video from my iMac through itunes to my apple tv without a problem. It is just the iPod that seems to be not working.

  • HT201343 Airplay troubles with 2nd Gen. appleTV

I just bought a new macbook pro with mountain lion and I am having trouble using airplay with my apple tv.  The airplay icon shows up on my computer screen, and I can play music and videos from itunes, but the apple tv will not display what is on my desktop when i am browsing the web etc. whats going on?

My id/password combo is ok - 100% sure.
Took the bold step of resetting to factory defaults. Now it doesn't even sign in to itunes sharing from the AppleTV anymore: says id/password wrong. It was only iTunes saying this before. So now I can't even access stuff on my PC anymore. Yet at this very moment I'm downloading a movie on iTunes on the computer meaning I will only be able to see it on the computer.
    Quite disappointed in Apple!

  • HT4437 How do I stream airplay content from 2nd Gen Apple tv 5.1?

Can't find setting to stream music from Apple tv to AirPlay speaker and AirPort Express..

It depends on the app you are using to do the streaming. The app will have to support AirPlay. Look for the AirPlay button in the app (see screenshot below.) Home Sharing does not need to be enabled so if you go to a friends house that also has an Apple TV you can stream to it as well.
Another way to get the content of your iPod Touch to your TV screen is to use the Apple Digital AV Adapter. This will mirror the screen, and play the sound, of your iPod Touch, and other iOS devices, on a TV over an HDMI cable. Only 4th generation iPod Touchs are supported though.

  • What do u do when your 3rd gen ipod touch keeps saying headphones but there is no headphones in it?

    how do i fix it

The iPod requires serve, likely to replace the headphone jack. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for:
Apple - Support - iPod - Repair pricing
A third-party place is less expensive.. Here is one. Google for more.

  • What are the downsides to extending an Airport Express's network with Airport Extreme?

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports? I think it happens more often than not that the position of the modem from your ISP in the dwelling is not the ideal location for a router, and it is sometimes inconvenient/impossible to wire an ethernet connection to the optimal location. I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, and was thinking of hooking up the Express to the modem and having the Extreme extend that network, placed at the optimal router location. My concern with that setup is whether the Extreme will use all of its antennas, since the Express has fewer (6 vs 2 if I'm correct).

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports?
There are none. You might be confusing such a "wirelessly extended" network with a WDS, which was a horrible compromise with significant disadvantages.
The optimal location for the second AirPort might not be obvious. Keep in mind that it can only "wirelessly extend" the signal it is capable of receiving. Place it in a location where the wireless signal created by the main router remains strong, while still being able to create a network that covers your required wireless service area.
Don't worry about the number of antennas or how they are used. They're all used.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen. / iOS 4.2 update, NO AirPlay!!!

I updated my iPod Touch 2nd Gen. this morning to iOS 4.2, and found that there is no AirPlay icon in ANY of my media apps (including the native players). There is also NO "text search" in Safari. I checked the "About" section on my Touch and it says I am indeed running 4.2. What gives??? Did 2nd Gen. users get left out again???

I have 2 second generation iPod Touches and they both have Airplay.
Not sure what you have for Airplay?
    Apple TV?
    Airport Express?
or some type of compatible powered speakers that can use Airplay?
You need to have on of the above for the Airplay to show up I believe but not positive.
I have 3 Airport Expresses hooked up to 3 different stereos throughout the house and the garage.
When I open up my playlists and choose a song to play, then I am given a choice of what Airport Express I want to play to after hitting the Airplay button on the right of the volume bar.
    So, mine works.
    Not sure why yours isn't.

  • What are the differences between a 2nd generation Airport Extreme and a 5th generation other than dual band capability?

I have a 2nd generation and want to replace it with a 5th generation. Will it be worth it? Other than the dual band capability of the 5th gen, what is the advantage?

The 2nd Gen AirPort will support wireless speeds up to about 270-300 Mbps. The 5th Gen will go up to 400-450 Mbps.
But, not sure why you are looking at a 5th Gen AirPort when the Gen 6 runs circles around the Gen 5 in terms of speed capability and antenna performance. The 6th Gen antennas are up at the top of the tower for significantly better transmission capability and there are more of them as well.
With an "ac" capable computer the 6th Gen will get up to 900-1,000 Mbps. Otherwise, it will come in at 400-450 Mbps with a fairly up to date Mac.
The 6th Gen would be, and is a "no brainer" for me over the 5th Gen, but you may have your reasons.
Apple tends to introduce new models in June of most years, so if you are not in a rush, you will likely have an even better offering soon.

  • What are the differences between iPod 2nd and 3rd Generation models?

    Hi:
I have a couple questions about the differences between some of the iPod Touch models:
    1) What is the difference between the *2nd Gen 8GB iPod touch* and the *3rd Gen 8GB iPod touch?*
    2) What are the differences among the *3rd Gen iPod Touch 8GB* model and the *32 GB and 64 GB models* (other than the memory differences)?
    Thanks!

    none, really.

the 32 & 64 GB models have advanced hardware components. 32GB and 64GB Touches gain 3GS specs - roughly 2x faster, with more advanced 3D graphics for games that capitalize on OpenGL 2.0 - and features like Voice Control.
