Iweb just ate 7 years of images off all my old blogs and articles. I have limited machine back ups.
Tech support for 3.5 hrs was useless.
What FTP servers are iWeb users looking at to transfer to?

Any good hosting company will give you better service and tech support than MobileMe. Make sure you get a Linux account and that support is available 24/7.

I took a look at rage, along with about 50 other hosting services. I like rage's support of iWeb (one of the few) but to get their best price you have to shell out $180. Otherwise, $11 per month is pretty steep.
Hasn't anyone found an affordable alternative for iWeb sites? Here are my requirements:
* Preference for iWeb-friendly host, but I'm okay going FTP.
* I do NOT want to have to re-design the site in another application. I spent a lot of time creating in iWeb and I don't want to have to start over and pay for a new app.
* No hosts that serve advertising on my site. (Beware, there are a lot of these and not just free sites. You'll only find out in the fine print of their TOS).
* No teaser rates at $3.95 a month that go up to $12.95 after a year. Once I find a host I don't want to have to move the site again every year to the next teaser-rate site. I'd like to find something around $3.95 for a basic site.
* I'm okay with a host that assigns just space on their server, e.g., a URL like www.thehost.com/myaccount. I can point the domain names to the appropriate home pages under the main account. I don't want to pay extra just to have the domain name appear.

What FTP server have people found to be the best? I hear the built in one is not great and haven't been able to find the GUI editor for settings for it. Is there a free on out there that people really like, I hear good things about pure ftp. I'd like something that was easy to configure and manage ideally.

Is this a case of premature optimization?
Try the integrated ftp server within Mac OS X Server. See if it works. (If you're operating at the free level, that usually also means you don't want to add even the free stuff, as even the free stuff costs you time and effort. Sometimes the free stuff even costs vastly more than the commercial stuff, but that's another topic.)
Regardless of what tools you choose, this is ftp, which means it lacks all concepts of security and it stinks around any firewalls. And these limitations and exposures and difficulties are inherent to any ftp implementation. And to successfully use ftp, you can need to open swaths of ports on the client firewall or the server firewall, and (this is where maintaining ftp can get particularly "interesting") on intervening network firewalls.
Mac OS X Server (also) offers WebDAV, NFS, SMB, AFS and probably a few other protocols. These are managed with a combination of Server Admin and WorkGroup Manager and (though I tend to avoid it) can probably also be managed via Server Preferences.
Mac OS X Server and Mac OS X client also have clients for these protocols via the command line and via Finder.
I'm not sure how we got to a discussion of cloud storage providers here, either.

I have been using iWeb for a very long time. I need to move on to something that is being updated. What is the best replacement for iWeb? I see Wordpress needs special software to work on a Mac.

I have used HostExcellence in the past and they support all the CMS's including WordPress, so you should have no problems there.
The top CMS's that most have heard about and use are Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
There is probably no best one, but you need to look at them all and use the one that best fits your needs.
I have used all of them in the past, but most recently Joomla and Drupal. Drupal has a reputation for being quite hard and Drupal 6 was, but with the advent of Drupal 7, things got a lot easier. There are a lot more themes that you can use and if you want increased functionality in Drupal, then you can download Modules and install them. You can have a membership site if you want it and this is easy to do - people can sign up for an account and you can restrict their access to certain parts of the site and then limit what they can do. You can allow people to complete forms on the site itself and the results to be sent to you. There is a Blog module that you can enable and that comes in Drupal Core with no need to download an extra module.
Joomla is good also and you can have a Blog with it too and there are lots of themes to choose from, but sometimes you have to pay for extras with Joomla - you can download Extensions and Plugins, but they may not always be free.
WordPress was always just thought of as a blogging platform, but it has evolved in to much more than that and you can now create stunning looking websites with blogs - there are a good range of free templates to choose from and if you want your blog on the front page of your site you can have this, or you can change it to another part of your site if you want a static front page. To extend functionality you can download plugins from inside WordPress itself, most of which are free. This might be the easiest one for you to use if you just want a website with a built in blog that is relatively easy.

There is no iPad version of MS Office. You can use Apple's iDevice versions of Numbers, Pages, and Keynote which can read and export Office compatible documents. There are quite a few other third-party apps that do much the same such as Documents To Go.

What is Hashtable.clone() good for?

I want to make a copy of a Hashtable. I read the javadoc of Hashtable.clone() and it says:
"Creates a shallow copy of this hashtable. All the structure of the hashtable itself is copied, but the keys and values are not cloned. This is a relatively expensive operation. "
What does this mean? I want my copy to be de-coupled from the original, i.e. when i change anything in my copy, the original should be untouched. But the sentence "the keys and values are not cloned" seems to result in a coupled copy. So I have to copy all keys/values into a new Hashtable object myself. Leading to the question: what is Hashtable.clone() good for?

I prefer this to ad hoc speed testing classes.

Management servers are servers that you are able to access from the da client Before logged on as a user.
Your domain controllers are by default infrastructure servers, but in many cases you want to add for example SCCM, NAP and other servers to be accessable prior logon.
If you are using the manage-out functionality in DirectAccess, and want to access a client prior anyone is logged on, the management server is also needed there.

Whats the check box good for?

Greetings!
I'm on a Monday roll. I got bit by a context menu so far so now lets try the check box.
I've always been under the impression that the check box was an include/exclude thing its either on or off.
Instance I was trying to burn a cd from a playlist and it went over. So I would un-check boxes for items in the list and try to re-burn the cd. Even after clearly it telling me I had less time and space itunes was still trying to burn the 'unchecked' items.
So .... what are the check boxes good for?? I'm sure I'm going to feel really dumb when the answer is presented.

By checking/unchecking songs, you alreay are doing it, except instead of having them in a neat, tidy playlist or two, you have the whole library to go thru.
Here's how I do it.
It's very simple to get new music and my favorites onto the iPod, once set it up.
I have a few playlist I sync.
One is a regular playlist (iPod Music) with all the music I always want on my iPod.
I also create a smart playlist.
The criteria are.
Match all rules;
Playlist is not iPod music (this keeps from selecting songs I already have)
My rating is not 1 star (keeps off stuff I rate one star)
Have not heard in last two weeks (rotates older music)
Limit selection to 2GB by Random (the size is set to the iPod total size minus iPod music playlist size).
Then I select the iPod, click the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and choose Selected playlists in the drop down.
Tick the two playlists above.
I add/delete from the iPod Music playlist to always sync this music.
Once a week or so, depending on how much I have listened to the iPod, select the smart playlist.
Select all the songs and press Delete. Since it's a smart playlist, it will automatically fill up again with new music based on the criteria.
Then I sync the iPod.
(I really gotta start a blog with this info in it since I type it a bunch...)

So I just bought my powerbook used. This is my first mac. I may have under researched this decision. i'm now finding all sorts of guff about the powerbook g4s being "too slow" and "outdated". did I just waste a bunch of money on and obsolete machine. or is it possible to upgrade the hardware enough to salvage it for a few years?

I think it depends on what you paid whether you wasted money or not, and what your intended use is. Certainly the Powerbook series and G4 PowerPC processor has not been used for many years now, and support for programs, security updates, and so on is waning.
Assuming the hardware is in good condition, the only logical upgrades for this machine is to max the RAM and install a larger hard drive (both depend on which Powerbook you have).
While I would not be happy trying to edit video or do extensive Photoshop work (too slow), I still use my PB as a secondary machine for light duty tasks such as email, web surfing (except web video -too slow), photo viewing, iTunes playback, word processing, and so on.
Computers get better. I don't think Pentium 3 machines satisfy many PC users anymore either.

Just for PS and AE you won't need much more. To some degree harddrive speed and capacity for placing caches and temporary data will matter, so you should get 2 or 3 drives, assuming we're talking Mac Pro and not iMac. Graphics won't matter much. Choice is limited anyway and neither AE nor PS are particulalrly dependent on OpenGL...

Don't yet. Wait for the bugs to be worked out. I always give iTunes updates a good month or two before actually upgrading. Though you could check the discussion boards here and see what people are having troubles with if you'd like to form your own opinion.

I add pictures to existing web page using iweb(3.0.1) and new pictures show in all browsers EXCEPT firefox. Previous patches seem only good for iweb 2.X

web page created with iweb (3.0.1). worked great in firefox, then I added additional photos to an existing web page. All other browsers see these new pictures EXCEPT firefox. There seems to have been a previous issue with new pages, but fix appears only fro iweb2.x

Do you see any error messages about getElementsByClassName in the Tools > Error Console ?
That was the problem with content generated with an older version of iWeb.
Content that has been generated with such an older version needs to be regenerated with that never version and uploaded to the web server.
Never versions of iWeb should cause any problems.

As far as I know, there are no known security risks with it (at least no widely reported cases). I've used it for about three years, and have had no security problems with it. The UNIX programmer folks on here will have more specific technical information, but from a user standpoint it's perfectly safe to use. In fact, if you add other user accounts to your own computer, the other users can't even attempt to access it. It's pretty neat...
