What Generation MacBook is from Early 2009?

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my MacBook. It's the early 2009 model, it currently has 2 GB of RAM, which means it has two 1 GB RAM modules. I was trying to find it in the RAM section of Apple's online store, but they're listed by generation there, and it seems to be somewhat difficult to determine the generation of a Mac. Does anyone know how to find out? Or if you just know the generation for the early 2009 model, that'd be nice too.

Apple buys their memory from the same manufacturers that everyone else does. They just charge double what online stores like OWC do.

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!

  • How to recover my administrator password in OS X Lon 10.7.5 on Macbook 13-inch, Early 2009

    I have a macbook 13-inch, Early 2009
    and installed Lion 10.7.5
How can I recover or resset my admin. password?, because I put that I remember but is incorrect.

The only way to reformat (erase) and restore to factory settings is by booting from the install disc that came with the Mac. Apple install discs are, "machine specific" meaning they can only be used on the Mac they shipped with.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

My iMac is from early 2009.  Should I have a new hard disk installed to prevent disk failure?

Having a good backup strategy is the best way to prevent data loss.
    see > http://www.macworld.com/article/1156643/how_i_back_up_frakes.html
That way if and when your internal hard disk ever does fail or you just what to upgrade your Mac to a larger hard drive, you have a good backup on a external hard drive to recover from.
Personally I use Carbon Copy Cloner and keep current bootable backups on several external hard drives. That way I can either boot up and run or restore from them in case something ever happens to my internal hard drive.

  • Macbook Pro 17 (early 2009) gets really hot and MagSafe Charger.

My Macbook Pro 17 (early 2009) just recently started getting VERY hot after about 15 minutes of normal use. Even hotter faster with fan blowing like crazy when using programs such as quicktime (recording). According to my Mac HD, I have 168 GB available out of 285 GB capacity. The laptop gets very hot especially in the top left corner area around where the charger plugs in. And yes it is on flat surface. Any ideas on why this is doing this?
On top of the laptop getting hot, the original charger that came with it doesnt charge all the time. The white box where the AC plug is gets very hot as well. I bought a new MagSafe charger (the new "L" type) literally a year ago and the box on this one also gets VERY hot and the connector with LED light (part that connects to laptop) get EXTREMELY hot. Any help would be appreciated. My apple care is up and I think its rediculous to have to pay for any type of support now. Thanks.

  • I was resetting my macbook pro 17 (early 2009) to factory settings but does not restore due to a problem with the restore disk. Please advice me on what to do next.

I was resetting my macbookpro 17 (early 2009) to factory settings but was indicating problems on the restore disk.  I erased my macintosh hd drive so the hd is empty.  What do I do next?

Get an external drive and make a clone of your internal, erase the internal, set it for 1 partition (OSX Journaled) and restore the clone.

  • Bluetooth: Cannot pair MacBook Pro 15" (early 2009) and Nokia cell phones

When I try to pair my Nokia cell phone (E65) with my new MacBook Pro 15", the bluetooth assistant hangs after the input of the pairing code. I tried another Nokia cell phone in addition (N70), but had the same issue.
When I initiate the pairing by the phone, then the pairing process seems to be successful, but I still cannot use the bluetooth connection with the phone afterwards (e.g. browsing files on it, 3G internet connection). The connection becomes established for a few seconds, but then the phone is being disconnected.
I never had these problems using my old black MacBook. It still works when I try today. So it must be an issue of the new MBP.
I successfully paired the New MBP with my old MB via Bluetooth - could transfer files for example without any problems. Therefore I think that the Bluetooth hardware (Broadcom) seems to work properly.
The MacBook Pro 15" has the Broadcom chipset, while the old black MacBook has the Cambridge Silicon Radio chipset. Maybe there's an incompatibility between Broadcom and Nokia (?)
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I also have an early 2009 15" MBP and am experiencing bluetooth pairing problems. When I first started this computer, I successfully paired my Sonyericsson HBH-DS980 headphones. While using this connection, I accidently lost the connection by moving out of range. After this, the headphones would not re-connect. I deleted the headphones from the MBP bluetooth configuration and tried unsuccessfully to discover and re-pair. I also have another pair of SE HBH-DS220s. They initially paired and worked properly with my MBP and again after loss of connection, would not re-connect or re-pair. I do not have this problem with my first generation MBP so I know it must be something with the bluetooth system in my new MBP. I don't know anything about Mac operating systems, but I bet there is some log file somewhere that is logging a bluetooth problem and thereby locking out that type of device. I would really appreciate a MAC guru's help.
    Thanks
    Dan

  • Slow iMac from early 2009

I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help my early 2009 iMac: it seems to be really slow lately, especially when I use iPhoto '09 v8.1.2. Even loading things on Safari v7.1 seems to take longer than it used to. I have Mavericks OSX v10.9.5, I'm not sure it that is part of the problem or not. And now Yosemite OSX is out and I'm reluctant to install it while I'm having these issues already. Any advice?
    Thank you!

  • Video Out from early 2009 Mac Mini

Is there any way to go from one of the video outs on the Mini to a converter of some sort, then to video input or S video input on a TV monitor? I see that the Mini DVI to Video does not work with my version of the Mac Mini. Any other solutions?

    Grant Lenahan wrote:

What do you think wont work?
A DVI monitor will work on DVI or DVI-I.
A DVI-I monitor will work on DVI or DVI-I
Dont believe me? Try it ( or read the spec).
    Grant
You commented as to why make the special connector. I gave an answer based upon the original question to this post which is about +_getting a analog composite video or S-video signal to a Mini, NOT a DVI monitor_+.
Apple makes and sells an adapter to provide composite and S-video from the DVI connector of certain Mac models of Macbook Pro and Mac Pro. (I use one.) But since the Mini does not produce the analog signals, the adapter will not work, even if you could physically plug it in to the Mini. So if Apple did as you say and made the computer with the connector to use either a DVI-D or DVI-I adapter, in my example, if the aforementioned person with lesser technical knowledge plugged in the S-video connector to the Mini, they'd be angry that it didn't work. Again to avoid the "Why would Apple sell something that wouldn't work on my computer if it fits?!" type of support calls.

  • Macbook pro 17 [early 2009] information

    Hi everyone,
I'm about to buy a Macbook Pro 17" but before buying it I would like to have my information confirmed, so I'll summarize it (this will also help everyone who wants to buy a Macbook Pro 17" too).
I'm aware that the problems I'll speak about are not happening on all sold MBP but only on few of them and that many MBP have no problem at all.
Here is the list of the problems and qualities I read about.
Let's begin by the problems (I always prefer to finish by something good )
1°) screen is dimmer and seems to have too much blue.
=> the problem seems to be due to a software problem which happens when using a UMBP 15" build or settings on a 17" and doesn't seem to appear on provided build.
2°) The screen flickers when on battery with low brightness.
=> seems to appear most of the time when battery is under 15% with the 9400
3°) red or green lines on the screen (often on gaming)
=> seems to be a heat problem (partially resolved when forcing fans to rotate at high speed). I think that newly produced MBP haven't the problem (still to confirm).
    4°) battery doesn't last 8hours
=> the battery use depending on what you do on the laptop, you will get the 8hours provided only by surfing on the web on HTML/CSS pages with half brightness. Otherwise you won't have them but the battery will still be good.
I think these are the main possible hardware problems (won't speak about the problems I've seen only once) so let's speak about qualities.
1°) Screen seems to be quite good. Some image professionnals said they were nearly able to work on it (remember that photographs hate punchy colours because the printers have paler colours) when they had anti glare option. Glossy screen seems to be good too.
2°) It has a anti glare option.
    3°) The performance seems good.
4°) seems silent when not using GPU too much
5°) glossy screen don't seem to disturb many people, it's just a matter of moving the screen from few centimeters.
5°)And of course it runs MacOS
remarks : mini display adapters and remote are not bundled anymore. You'll have to buy them when purchasing your laptop.
The anti glare bezel is an aluminium one.
Here is a topic which contains a photo with glossy 17" and 15" side by side.
Here you can see anti glare bezel.
I think I've summarized all the useful things I read, do not hesitate to complete if needed.
Now I have some questions. Since I'm not able to see it form my own eyes (haven't any store near home), I would like to have your opinion on the case quality and on the screen brightness(especially the anti glare because I work with many windows near me for a long time and I wouldn't like to be tired after two hours(I'm not with T60P)). I don't really trust photo to render brightness but do not hesitate to post some.
    I'm able to see a UMBP 15" and a MBP 17" matte finish with X1600 to compare, I also own a T60P.
This will be my first apple so I've another question, I read that apple will refund without any question if you return it within the 14 days, is that true (I'm in France)?
Thanks in advance for answers and sorry for my bad englih, I haven't praticed for a while .

    Hi Bad_Crow,
I have just written this quick post to comment on your question of case quality as compared to the ThinkPad T60.
I had used ThinkPads for over 10-years, and I had been an Advisory Member of Lenovo's Product forums.
Ever since Lenovo had dropped the magnesium exterior of the T40 series for the plastic exterior of the T60 and T500 series, ThinkPad case quality has become horrible. Yes, the new ThinkPads have an internal roll cage, but that does not help. The plastic still cracks, the keyboard still flexes, and the screen still bends. These issues have been widely reported at Lenovo's forums.
I had moved to MacBook Pros because they are the best-built notebooks on the market today. They are far more durable than any ThinkPad. The anodized aluminum is a far superior notebook casing than anything that has been offered by Lenovo. The precision aluminum unibody enclosure makes the MacBook Pro even stronger.
MacBook Pros have no cracking issues, no keyboard flex, and no screen bending issues. Yes, there have been a few reports, but every company has its' lemons.
Should you have any case issues, Apple will fix or replace it quickly, where as Lenovo will take months.
I have noted links, with more information on the anodized aluminum that has been used for MacBook Pro cases, for you to check out.

I hope that this helps answer your question of case quality.

  • DDR2-800 on MacBook 5,2 (Early 2009)

    Hi,
I just installed 4 GB of DDR2-800 RAM even though the manual says I have to install DDR2-667.
I heard a lot that Apple limits otherwise capable hardware to reject upgrade options different to those specified in the manual.
Will the computer rebel against it? What can I expect?

    Hi stedman1,
Like I said, the computer does start-up, recognizes the memory as DDR2-800 and passed the Apple Hardware Test extended test.
My question is: Will it cease to work after some time? Will it work more slowly than when I had the 667's in?
I was hoping to get a little performance boost because of the 1066 MB/s difference in peak transfer rate between the two...

  • After Service, Airport card stops working randomly on macbook pro 17" early 2009

    Hi,
So after the last time my computer was serviced, the airport card stops working randomly on moving the screen.
Upons restarting the computer, it sometimes says wi-fi hardware not installed. Then, if I move my machine around,
lift it up, turn it around, place it back on the table and restart it, it works again. I don't understand this.
And all this started happening the moment my warranty ran out. Extremely frustrating!!

It may be possible that one of the following may be the issue:
The internal AirPort Extreme card is not seated properly.
The internal Wi-Fi antenna connector is not seated properly in the AirPort Extreme card.
The internal AirPort Extreme card's connector is faulty or damaged.
The internal AirPort Extreme card is faulty.
To get an idea on how the Extreme card is installed, please check out the following iFixit article.

  • MacBook Pro (1st gen Intel) : poor wifi performance vs MacBook (early 2009)

I have an issue with my old _MacBook Pro (1st generation Intel)_ which is much slower than my brand new MacBook (from early 2009) : all the bandwith tests show the _MBP being at 50% speed vs the MacBook_. I use my iPhone on my network as well and is behaving better than the MBP...
Do you have any idea where that comes from ?
    Thanks for your help,
FYI : the MBP is on OS X 10.4 vs OS X 10.5 for the new MB. I have MAC adress filtering for the 3 equipment...

I've had the same problem with my MacBook Pro from Late 2008.
Yesterday, I had a Lenovo and Sony laptop sat right next to my MacBook Pro, and the Macbook was the only laptop that couldn't maintain a Wi-Fi connection.  Usually, it couldn't even keep the connection for more than a minute or so.
I tried changing my Router's configuration (eg change to Channel 1, etc)  but in the end, I gave up and had to buy a Wi-Fi Range Extender device.   It was very easy to install and setup, there isn't even an install CD or software to install..
My MacBook now has a fast, reliable Wi-Fi connection.
What I don't know  (and didn't try)  is whether attaching a 802.11N USB device to my MacBook Pro would've improved it's Wi-Fi connection.  This might've been a cheaper option, but as I wanted my iPad & iPod to also have an improved Wi-Fi connection, I went for the Range Extender instead.
