  • HELP!!!!!!  What does the "Other" category mean when iPhone is on iTunes???

    Hey,
I was fixing to sync my 3G iPhone when i realized i didnt have enough room for what i wanted because the "other" category is taking up so much space. Ive reset iTunes and iPhone but still see so much space taken up by "other." I've deleted all emails and texts and only have a few pictures on my iPhone but the "other" still takes up over 3gigs on my iPhone.
What is the "other" section and how do i get rid of items that the phone puts in the "other" category???
Also, as another seperate problem, i believe, i cant seem to locate the application link in my itunes library anymore for some reason even though the tab under the iPhone device link recognizes my applications in iTunes. How do I get the Applications link back in my iTunes library?
    THank you so much!!!

    OK,
I checked my prefernces and you were right, the applications weren't checked. Thank you.
As far as my "other" problem.....before i do the restore, how do I backup my iPhone? When i clicked on restore a moment ago it said it will erase my phone but i thought that iTunes periodically backedup my phone anyways.

What is the other category when syncing my iphone? It is large and I need to delete it

Search before posting or see the "more like this"s section on the right side of this page.  Your question has been asked and answered many times.

  • The other category on my iphone is really high and I dont know why

I plugged my phone into my computer to download some new songs and when I looked at Phone capacity/usage I saw that the 'other' section was using 4.50 gb. How could this happen? I got my phone less than a week ago for christmas. Is there anyway of deleting stuff on my phone so that the 'other' section will go down?

what is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
    Summary
What is the Other on my iPhone? Now the Other is taking up 1.9GB space on iPhone 4, how can I remove it and release the space?

Symptom: Frankly I rarely cared about the free space on my iPhone until it ran out today and my iPhone 4 warned me to release some space. The first thing that I were considering initially was to delete some large game Apps. But when I connected to my computer, I noticed that a "Other" bar was consuming 2.5 GB of my iPhone's 13.57 GB. Does anyone know what the Other means on my iPhone?

What is taking up "Other" space on my iPhone
Analysis: Some of you may think the Other on your iPhone is the pure OS taken space or Safari, email temporary data. But that’s not the complete answer.
Part of that Other space on iPhone is taken up by iOS, the operating system running on your iPhone. For this part, this is no way to reclaim the free space from that. However, the Other part of iPhone storage space also contains sort of caches and temp files generated by App and iTunes syncs, and some of them won't be used long-term.
The size used by Other on your iPhone largely depends on the App you currently installed on the phone. The more caches and temp files created by Apps, the more space consumed by Other. And of course, it may slow your iPhone down.
Solution: it is hardly to put up with 2-3GB space taken by Other on iPhone, especially we even have no idea about what exactly it is. So to remove the Other, you can try to reclaim this space by doing a sync with iTunes; in other cases, you may have to go through a full backup and restore process.
Because iTunes is terribly slow and troublesome on Windows PC (Best iTunes Alternatives ), and every time we sync our iPhone with iTunes will take lot of time. So, alternatively, you can use an iPhone Cleaner program to remove their Other files on your iPhone.
PhoneClean is an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch cleaner application, which is dedicatedly designed to free up space on iPhone; clean App cache, cookies, and history; sweep off media temp files, etc.

  • What is considered to be under the "other" category in Iphone storage?

My phone says its storage is full but I have very small amounts of pictures and music and apps.  According to the graph that comes up when I sync my phone, my phone is filled up of mostly "other"  I do not know what is contained in this "other" category and I want to reduce my storage.

"Other" is anything that does not fit in the other defined catergories.
Other is typically 200mb to approximately 1GB.  Anyting significantly over 1GB is likely corruption.  Restore the device from backup, if that does not reduce the size of other, restore as new.

  • When looking at the storage options, what falls under the other category from my iPhone?

When I plug my phone into the computer, Itunes shows the audio, photo, app, data, and other catagories, what is classified under other?????

  • HT2729 what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    iMessages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
Music library database index (but not the music itself)
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 3 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

When syncing my iPod Touch, the "Other" category shows it's taking up a large amount of storage space on the device.  What is in the "Other" category, and how do I control what goes into it?

Restore from a backup will get you some 'other' back.

I have two ipod nanos.  And i have 2 itunes accounts and we are accessing both accounts from the same PC.  One of my ipod works fine, it gets detected as a device and sync fine.  The other one does not.  Anyone knows what this may be?

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is ituens purchases.  The ipod is not a backup device.
Copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of your old computer, to the new one.

  • When I see the usage on my iPod touch 4 they have categories for how much space is being used where. What does the "other" category contain? Like what could I delete on my iPod to get rid of the "other" category?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

    Hey Ben,
If you backed up your photos on your computer, just sync back to your computer, and in iTunes, select Photos (with your device selected on the left side of iTunes window). Click to sync photos and select the photo album you want back on your device.
    Good luck

  • What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

Not actually, his statement is to not worry about what is in Other. That is opposite from iOS, if you have 8GB of other you most likely have corrupted files on your iPhone and you need to Restore to eliminate them.

  • When syncing, what does the 'Other' category refers to?

I sync my iPad to a computer originally.  Now that I've purchased another computer I'm trying to sync to it but I'm unable to determine had to make sure the 'other' category is not lost during the transfer.  Any help would be appreciated.

Don't sweat it.  "Other" is primarily the Operating System  (IOS).

  • How do I get rid of the "other" category on my iPad Air?

iTunes is saying that "other" occupies 1.97GB out of my 16GB tablet and I need to learn how to remove it. I am a long-time apple user with all the apple devices, but can't seem to figure out what causes the "other" category to be so large on any of my devices.
Thanks in advance for your help!

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

What can I get rid off to clear the most space on my iPhone 4?

Photos and videos usually take a lot of space. You can import them from the Camera Roll to a computer and delete them all from the phone or keep some if desired. If you delete and later decide you want some of them back on the phone you can sync them back via iTunes.
