What good is music sharing?

Am I missing something? I recently purchased a Buffalo Terastation and moved all the music that my wife and I have. The Terastation shows up under SHARED, but all you can do is listen to the music. There are over 3500 songs in shared area, and there doesn't appear to be any way to oraganize them or make playlists. What good is a shared library if you have to find songs one at a time to listen? Isn't there any way for us to share our music between computers without being so limited? Also, if I want to put a song from her library onto my iPod, I have to hook my iPod to her computer. The music belongs to both of us. Why isn't it available to my computer for anything other than listening? Otherwise, I would have to have duplicates of everything, copying her library into mine.

By design, the sharing capability allows listening but prevents copying. The same restrictions apply to a husband and wife in one household as to two students in adjacent dorm rooms. (You can probably imagine why it is designed that way, but it does not really matter.)
My suggestion? Make a copy of each other's files on the both computers. That will allow you each to sync your own iPod to your own computer with your own playlists, etc. Also, you each need to have a backup of your music anyway, and that would be a fine way to do it.

you iphone does not work like a regular ipod, where you can drag and drop music, you must sync it with itunes. plug it into your computer, click on the icon that is labeled iphone that will show on the left column when you do this there is a section on the top that says music. click on that, then you can select playlists and artists, etc. then click apply. it should work then

ITunes music sharing from PC to Mac

Hello,
I have an old pc (not so old it cannot stably run iTunes) and a MacBook. I did not upgrade my MacBook's hard drive and it has become clogged with my music! I am at college and know about networking etc... I was wondering about the compatability of PC's and Mac's with iTunes. I will have Windows 2000 Server Edition on the PC (its currently installing).
Is there anything more that I need to do to get my music shared? I have all the wires or wireless to get it on the network. Is it as simple as going into iTunes and enabling library sharing or will there be some compatability errors over iTunes for windows and iTunes for mac?

File sharing and music sharing in iTunes not working on local network

Hi Folks
I am now going to make a topic of my own this time. Here is how it doesn´t work:
I have a MBP with Mac OS 10.5.4 connected via Airport to my local network. The switch is a zyXel 2602HW-D1A. On my network there is an iMac Flat Panel 800 mHz and an even older iMac bondiblue rev. A. Both of the old ones are running (smoothly) on Panther. The two old ones are connected via ethernetports (wired) on the zyXel-switch. I also have an Apple TV connected wireless to the switch. There is also two printers connected to the network.
Until recently, don´t know exactly when, everything has worked just fine. The two old macs showing up perfectly in the sidebar of a Finder window. I could also connect to them via the command K. Musicsharing in iTunes also worked very well. But now it is impossible for my MBP to connect to the other Macs. They show up rarely in the sidepane af the Finder window, but when i try to make a connection it is impossible. It just turns the little wheel for a short while and then it says connecting failed. Also the command K command doesn´t work. The other way round is no problem. The two old ones connect perfectly together and to the MBP. Musicsharing is also lost FROM the MBP. There is absolutely no problems in the connection to the Apple TV from the MBP as well. All three Macs connect perfectly to the internet. I can also print from the MBP. AND it strangely connects perfectly to all PCs on my job-network, it is a PC only, LAN.
So far i have tried almost any combination of turning on and off firewall, allow only special sharing etc. For now the firewall is set allow everything to connect (and it has always been that way) Network settings has also been toggled in any way they can. I have done all three cron jobs and repaired permissions a few times. The zyXel switch has also been reset and restarted.
I also have a strange minor problem: I can´t open log via the show log button in the advanced pane of firewall settings. There just nothing happening when i click the button. I also had another problem in turning on Airport the other day. I toggled on and off a few settings (Appletalk on and off did the trick) and then it suddenly worked.
I have a strange feeling of something corrupt on my MBP. Or is it just that networking on Leopard is a bit unstable??
I would appreciate some help her. I am sure that the problem lies within the MBP, or what do you think?

I agree that something seems to awry in the Leopard MBP. The question is "what". The symptoms now are:
1) iTunes music sharing from MBP is broken
2) Connecting to Panther Mac via AFP is broken (although one Mac can be connected via IP address)
3) Machine works well on a Windows network
Based on all of this, I would guess that there is a problem in the "Bonjour" networking of the MBP. You could try:
1. Using a different account to see if it is local to your user id.
2. Failing that, removing your com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist and com.apple.AppleShareClient.plist files from /Library/Preferences
Outside of that, I would have to do some more digging.

What slideshow with music maker program will install and run on my Mac Powerbook G4 1.5.8 1.33 GHz OSX laptop? Or are there any out there, I know my system is old but it's all I got for now.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:

Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

Question:
What is factory default “Sharing & Permissions” setting for User folders (Desktop, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public), subfolders, and documents and other contents?
I’m thinking the factory default “Sharing & Permissions” for all of the above (except Drop Box in the Public folder) is as follows, but not certain.

This is about 'Music Sharing', as defined by Apple. I can tick a box on my MBP and the library is visible to other macs on the same network.
Can I make it visible to iPads?
Please do not suggest 'Home Sharing' through a registered apple ID ... that is not what I need. If multiple Macs can share music across my local network in this way, then can iPads as well. I do not want the files copied to the devices. I just want the iPad to see the library like all of my macs can ...

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Lock objects are used to synchronize access to the same data by more than one program.
The lock mode controls whether several users can access data records at the same time. The lock mode can be assigned separately for each table in the lock object. When the lock is set, the corresponding lock entry is stored in the lock table of the system for each table.
There are three types of lock modes
1.Exclusive
2.Shared
3.Exclusive not cummulative
Exclusive lock: The locked data can only be displayed or edited by a single user. A request for another exclusive lock or for a shared lock is rejected.
Shared lock: More than one user can access the locked data at the same time in display mode. A request for another shared lock is accepted, even if it comes from another user. An exclusive lock is rejected.
Exclusive but not cumulative: Exclusive locks can be requested several times from the same transaction and are processed successively. In contrast, exclusive but not cumulative locks can be called only once from the same transaction. All other lock requests are rejected.

Launch iTunes on the computers you're interested in. Check in the "Advanced" menu.
If "Turn on Home Sharing" is listed as an option, the iTunes library that you have open is not Home Sharing.
If "Turn off Home Sharing ([accountname]) is listed as an option, the iTunes library that you have open is Home Sharing.

Please ensure that you are using Adobe Acrobat and not Reader to convert PDF file to word or excel.
Could you tell me whether it is a scanned document? Does this happen with all PDFs or any specific one?
Do you get any error message? What exactly happens when you try doing the same?

I have been waiting for such a long time to be able to get a smartphone. I had to get rid of my Comcast cable in order to get the new BIONIC smartphone and be able to afford the increase in my VerizonWireless Plan.
What hype and television commercials- great aren't they?
All the thousands of cool apps that are available- I'm going to love this; I was so excited.
Then, to top it off, the BIONIC came out- I decided that this one is the one I'm going to get; it's supposed to be way beyond more powerful than any smartphone before it. And the specs were impressive, to say the least.
To get to the point, I learned how to maneuver my way through some of the features. Then I found the Android Apps that are available and got really excited.
EVERY SINGLE app that I began to download informed me (before hand) of the control it would have over my phone and the access of my personal information in the phone.
How did I get sucked into this? Why isn't anybody else concerned about this?
I JUST DON"T GET IT.
WHO WOULD WANT TO GIVE PERMISSION TO "WHO KNOWS WHO", TO AUTOMATICALLY DIAL NUMBERS FROM YOUR PHONE, GET INTO YOUR CONTACT LIST, MONITOR AND COLLECT INFORMATION OF WHERE YOU GO, COLLECT A LIST OF WHO YOU CALL AND THEIR PHONE NUMBERS, AND SO MUCH OTHER PERSONAL DATA & PRIVATE INFORMATION.
Someone please help me to understand. Is there a firewall or something to stop these Apps from getting into my business? I checked out a few Apps to keep my privacy safe; even THEY want the privileges of sucking whatever information they want out of my phone. So, "What Good Is A Smartphone?"

I agree, also another thing to consider the apps on other platforms uses the same access rights but the only diffrence is the Android shows you what is needed to be access... Like Scur reported the applications have to access areas of software to give you options that users want in the apps..
Now I am not saying not to keep a eye on whar is requested because apps can request for access to areas that isnt required.. A wallpaper app doesnt need access to contacts information but it would need web and permission to write to sd card. This is what is required under the programming end of a app.
