What graphics card should I get?

I have a "late 2004" powermac g5. I've upgraded to Tiger and Ilife 08. IMovie is not running well enough with my current configuration. But that may be a moot point because I just tried out Final Cut Express at the Apple Store and like it far better than Imovie (I even liked IMovie HD better than '08).
I've upgraded to 3GB of ram. My video card is GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM . I've been told by OWC (Other World Computing) that I could get a ATI Radeon 9200 with 128MB and it would fit my machine. Can someone tell me if that will be enough for movie editing with Final Cut on my G5? That is, without jerkiness in the video playback while editing?
I also called ATI and was told that I could use a ATI X800 XT mac edition (256MB), but they no longer sell the card. Will that card work in my machine? If so, can I get that card without spending a fortune (Amazon lists it for almost $500)? And how can I be assured that it will work and do the job?
If it's important, I'm currently using a 15" CRT monitor more than 10 years old. Some day I will replace it, though I don't know with what.
Thanks!
Ps. Does anyone if Final Cut needs more video card memory than Imovie? Or less? I've seen Imovie on my machine, but not Final Cut.

I wonder if that could be true for IMovie, too? If so, it would seem that my problem is not due to the graphics card.
The people at the Apple Store Genius Bar told me that imovie was heavy on the graphics card and thought that final cut would be similar.
Thanks a lot for the reply!

• What graphics card should I get for video editing?

I recently purchased a G5 2.3ghz,Canon GL2 camcorder and Final Cut Express HD. Does any one have any suggestions on a good graphics card? I was thinking of buying a radeon 9800pro or would I be better off with the Radeon X800 XT.

Hi,
Firstly the card may work properly and the monitor may go to sleep after 1 hr or the power option (even it does not have battery) may turn the screen off after 1 hour. What is the model of your machine actually, for example the following link shows one model (HP TouchSmart 610-1150y):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02861058#N155
Upgrading/replacing video card on AIO machines is relative simpler than on laptops BUT finding the RIGHT card could be very difficult.

• What kind of graphics card should i get to run final cut pro x on my 2008 mac pro?

What kind of graphics card should i get to run final cut pro x on my 2008 mac pro?

Hello Andres. I own an Early Mac Pro 2008, and have had the blessing of using both FCP X & Motion 5 for some time now. This is a pritty open question and it depends on your usage and the throughput nessesary to handle your work load. I can share what my set up is, & it may help you deside if this is enough power for you or help you move in another direction. Keep in mind that the buss speed and cpu are a big part of helping FCP X more so than the video card, although the video card does come into play here as well. Now if you are wanting to run Motion 5 as well, the video card is Almost Everything, and you need the biggest and best situation here that the throughput on this system will except. I'm running 14 gig of system ram, and the video card is an ATI Radeon 5870. For FCP X, running 1920x1280p footage optimised in pro-res 422, she can move along with some render time nessesary when dropping on the timeline, also filters, transistions, titles ex, have a bit of a laps time to render, but then she runs ok. This wait is not as much of a challenge with this set up as with Motion. I need a much bigger gpu on the video card for this app. Not sure if this computers throughput is really worth the upgrade. Beleive this though, Motion is demanding on using ALL you can give it. It is a Genious App, and it also calls for ALL THE POWER YOU CAN GIVE HER IN A VIDEO CARD. Conclution: if you are just starting which it sounds like, even a smaller video card than this can work For FCP X. Make sure you have at least 8 gig of cpu ram. 12 or more will help here. Also make sure the card is OpenCL compadible.....& this is in the thread above,,,,,,,,

• What graphics card should ( or can ) I get?

I have a Pavilion media center a1520n
3 GB ram
geforce 7300 LE
The LE was originally purchased because it was one of the few able to run multiple monitors. I find myself gaming more recently and wondering what card can I get to work with my older system. Portal , dead space, bioshock, the ball, etc. Any suggestions?

FT, welcome to the forum.
The first thing that you need to do is determine the wattage of the power supply unit (PSU). I believe that it is 250W; possibly 300W. This will be the determining factor on your choice of video cards. Most newer mid-level video cards require at least 400W to run properly. I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY in that order. If you decide to upgrade the PSU, I will be glad to recommend a video card that will work.
Another upgrade that would help with playing the games that you listed is memory. I suggest using Crucial. Crucial makes quality memory for a reasonable price.

• What graphics card should I put in my Pavilion 23t AIO to run Battlefield 3?

The graphics card in the Pavilion 23t isn't suited for gaming, which another person has already told me, so I'm wondering which graphics card and/or other parts should I replace in my computer in order to be able to play games like Team Fortress 2 or Battlefield 3 smoothly.

BH,
It's very likely the user does not know the actual model #. The faceplate on the monitor is 23tm. Needs to look on the backside for the model # or actual product #. Either way, there is no physical means of changing out the CPU or GPU. The AIO series were never meant to be gamer's delight.

• Premiere Elements V4 does Not Support Matrox Parhelia 128mb Vid Crd - What video card should I get?

Premiere Elements V4 does not support Matrox Parhelia 128bm Video Card. Is there a recommended card that will work?
I have an Asus P2B Mother Board. Many thanks for any feedback.

Welcome to the forum.
About any current card, with good driver support, should work fine. The amount of VRAM is not that important, but I would go with ~ 1GB. The driver support is the main factor.
I am running PrE 4.0 and PrPro CS 2 Production Studio on my laptop w/ an nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX - 512GB VRAM, with no issues. That card/chip is a bit old now, and obviously the VRAM is less, than I mentioned, but to "future-proof" the computer a bit, the ~ 1GB VRAM would possibly help.
Good luck,
Hunt

¿Looking at more powerful cards?
The issue will be that your Mac Pro has two 6-pin aux power connectors inside (and NO cables, so if you go another route you will need to buy a pair of cables, but they are not expensive.) No eight pin cables at all.
Cards not "Mac Edition" do not have EFI firmware on board, and will generally not show a picture until the login screen, but in 10.8.3 and later, many seem to show a picture After the login screen -- even if they do not have EFI-firmware.

• What kind of graphics cards can I get?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 107NR
My graphics card is GeForce 8200M G
I need a better graphics card but I do not know what is compatible with the laptop. Can someone give me a list of upgraded graphics cards I can get? I am wanting to play Diablo 3 but my card is too weak.

Hi:
The video adapters are not upgradable without replacing the entire motherboard. The only motherboard I see with better graphics has the GeForce 9200M, which I doubt will be much better.
You would be better off selling or trading your notebook in and buying one with the graphics solution you are looking for.

Running Moutain Lion on Early 2009, mirroring two Seagate Go Flex 2TB USB 3.0 Drives. Installed in Slot 4.
Using it primarily with VMWare Fusion for Virtual Drives. Windows, Unbuntu and other OS running really well.
HPT Support was responsive and very helpfull using the WEB Portal under the product page.
I have some comments and a suggestion:
Have you tried your setup with a SD/CF combo card reader (like the Lexar or Kingston FCR-H63)? Does the card appear on the desktop when first plugged in?
Did you need to fool around with any kind of power issues in installing this card in the x4 PCIe slot of the MacPro?
Suggestion. Have you tried one of the fixed in this article to cure the BT issues in MacPro 3,1?
Good luck.

What graphics card is compatable with my presario sr1710nx pc? The current one died and I get nothing on my monitor and I tried connecting another monitor and still nothing. So I assume it is the grahics card.

Hi:
That is an old model.
The specs state it has onboard (integrated graphics).
If you are sure it is just the graphics that is kaput (you would know that if you hear Windows boot up and the logon music sounds or something) then...
I would get a used Dell Radeon HD 2400 on eBay which should work just fine for you, but you will need to have a monitor with a DVI connection and a DVI cable.
This is the cheapest one I could find.

• What graphics card is in my Mac?

Hi all,
I'd like to find-out what graphics card is in my Mac.
system_profiler list the following:
PCI/AGP Cards:
ATY,RV360:
Type: display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 128 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4152
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-A13602-121
If indeed this is the graphics card, it only tells me Radeon, but which model?
In the "Extensions:" list one may find many (e.g. 8500, 9700, Rage etc), but
this is a different story.
Does anyone know how to get the model from the system?
Thanks
Miklos

The key is the line:

ATY,RV360:

If you lookup "ATI' and 'RV360' you'll find it matches the ATI Radeon 9600XT chipset.
You can also download ATI's driver utility to get information on your video card: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894

• What graphics card to buy for my PC so I can use target display on iMac?

Hey,
Currently I have a ATI Radeon 5850 in my PC which I use to play BC2. I have my iMac which I use primarily, and a second screen next to it when I want to play BC2. I wish to get rid of the smaller screen and just use the iMac screen.
I understand that I can not use the 5850 with the iMac in target display mode.
What graphics card choices do I have so I can use it with the iMac in target display mode?
Is it just graphics cards that have Mini Display ports as standard? I know the 5870 Eyefinity edition works with target display mode, but this is outside of the price range Im looking for. Is there a solution for around £250 as I can always sell the 5850. I dont mind going Nvidia, Does anybody know if the GeForce 460/470 works with the iMac?
Thanks, Simon.

Ive just saw that the new HD 6870 has mini display ports, and is in the perfect price range for me. Can anybody confirm that this card would work with target display mode?
Thanks.

• HP ENVY 700-074 Desktop - what graphics card do I need to install to use a blu ray player?

I purchased an external blu ray player - "LG 14x external blu-ray/dvd writer super multi blue be14". For some reason I thought my system was compatible. However, it's not - apparently the Intel(R) 4600 won't work. What graphics card would I need to install to allow using this blu-ray device? What else do I need to know?

Ah, I should add, the Blu ray player's support site (for Cyberlink) suggested a pile of different drivers - 30 or 40, but didn't offer any specifics regarding my particular system. What I really need to know is what would be the best option for my particular system.
