What happened?? My mac turned into a PC

Hi - any insight would be appreciated.
Using my gorgeous computer all day,.. as usual... late last night started to watch a DVD...
Then the problem started... in the middle of loading DVD.... it suddenly froze..I could do nothing.. nothing responded... I closed the lid.. when I opened it the fans started, I could hear other strange sounds... but the screen was completely blank... I then heard some mail come through... but still the screen was completley blank..then battery was charging, I was plugged into the mains.. and then the green lights on the key board lit up.. but nothing on the screen. Then I tried to hold the power button down for about 10 seconds, then the computer closed down.. an anxious night, worrying about my beloved mac and all the info on for a big thing on Monday. This morning, switched it on.. and bam everything is as normal... except that this thing happened, will it happened again. My mac has never frozen, long gone are those PC nightmares ..or are they ??? Any insight, or explanation would be great. Thanks

Welcome to Apple discussions! Unfortunately, Macs are not miracle devices. They are manmade pieces of technology and as such, they're not immune to problems like you describe. I have had similar experiences on my Macs at one time or another.
The first thing to try is reloading the same DVD that caused the problem. See if it loads correctly this time. If not, try a different DVD and see if the problem persists.
If everything works fine, I would not worry too much. It's likely the event was a one time thing.

It was never completely clear whether it was just hidden or whether Apple ran a download page for iChat 6.
As the Download for Messages Beta was separate and "Deleted" iChat it would seem it would be another download for iChat 6.
iMessages will not function as it is only an Account type within Messages and iChat 6 does not have it.
Therefore messages on the iPhone will not sync to the Mac. (until you get Mountain Lion and Messages in that OS X version).
Mountain Lion and it's full version of Messages will not sync the iMessages that have happened in between the 14th December 2012 (end date of Messages beta) and the Install of Mountain Lion if you decide on that route.

What happens if I turn off airplane mode briefly while in a foreign country? I need to delete video voice mails to get that red dot off and hopefully get my FaceTime to work again.

To delete visual voicemails requires data or internet access via a carrier's cellular network. Visual voicemail access with the iPhone is not done via wi-fi. It is done via the cellular data or internet network only.
Turning Airplane mode off will not turn wi-fi off.

I see you all talking about a "redesign." Well, the other day I returned (after some absence) to the gigantic "OS X forum" at http://www.osxforum.com/ and it was just a shell of what it used to be. Gone were the thousands of posts, and gone were most of the people. I found nothing to click on, to get stuff to show up. I only saw several posts, and the most people ever on line, it said, was 77. Hmmm. What happened to the "innards" of this forum?
So I went to Apple.com to see if there was another link. There I see nothing about said forum, but found this "Apple Discussions." No word about whether some major change had occurred.
I do like the simplicity of this discussions site, but can anyone tell me whether the other forum still exists, and if so, how to really get into it, beyond what looks like a shell of its former self?

Over the past few years it had been poorly maintained
and particiption dwindled. I think quite a bit of
spam began appearing towards the end.
That must be it. Before that, though, it was a monstrous thing... thousands and thousands of posts, a very complex format with, I think, thousands of subscribers. I do think it was listed on Apple as a form of community help, as I seem to recall that one could either go on line and chat with an Apple volunteer for help, OR go to that forum. Oh well, enough of trivia.
Anyway, it's still there, the bare bones ghost of it, at

...but it's clearly defunct and useless now.

How do I figure out what fonts won't turn into graphics?

Ok. I've made sure that opacity it set to 100% for my text but they are still appearing as graphics when published to my .Mac account. I'm not assuming that there are only certain fonts that stay as text (as long as you leave opacity at 100%). Is there a list out there?

Started a new site and then added a new Welcome page. Deleted text in Welcome template text blocks. Created new text blocks using trebuchet. Page published as text. First victory. I dragged the Welcome page out of the new site and into my old site, which has continuously changed text to graphics. I published and the Welcome page still published as text. I wanted the Welcome page to be my home page, so I deleted the old home page and put the new Welcome page in its position. I then renamed the Welcome page to Home. I published it and I still got text instead of graphics. I then copied the trebuchet text header I created on the Welcome page and copied it. I went into each of my old pages, deleted the headers that I couldn't get to publish as text, did a paste of the trebuchet welcome header and published. Everything published as text. I then went in and changed all outstanding copy to trebuchet and everything published as text. Arial seems to be my problem font.

First of all trying to turn it on or charge it right now is bad. They will likely damage it more. Try to let the device dry. Bleach is very corrosive. It reacts a lot with copper traces. You can try placing it in Dry rice in airtight bag or container and leave it for a few days. Try not to shake it, rotate it, blow dry it, etc. You will likely spead the bleach farther around.

I cannot get the ipad to be recognized by itunes. Yes, new version. Yes, off and on of Ipad and computer. I've been at this for hours. Is it returnable???

Actually, this raises a really good point.
Make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes. You don't need to update your whole OS, but you do need the latest iTunes to work with the iPad.
You can either run the standard "Software Update" inside System Preferences (recommended), or from inside iTunes on your Mac you can goto the "Itunes" menu at the top and choose "Check for Updates"
The first option will update your whole computer including iTunes (which is a good thing but could take awhile). The second option will only update iTunes.

It won't turn on, I hold down all the buttons for at least 10 seconds. I plug it in the usb port (PC) and for 5 mins now it still doesn't work.

I used to have round about 400 pictures on my phone, long story with me restoring my MacBook Pro.
I ended up losing the pictures not overal fussed, i now have about 170 on all my devices, yet when i go on my iCloud settings it says 3.1GB is being stored within iCloud, what happens if i turn off / delete that setting from iCloud, will the 170 photo's i have get deleted from the iCloud, i can i backup again so my 170 odd photo's are just on the iCloud?

If you remove photos from the camera roll, they will be removed from your back up.
before removing photos from the camera roll you should copy them to a computer, an online storage service or put them into shared streams in iCloud.

What happens to the closed captions when you delete a video or audio from a slide? (Captivate 7)

This might be a silly question but ...
I have a presentation with audio voiceover on every slide and videos on some. I have entered closed captioning for all of them. This is a pretty time consuming job.
What happens if I run into a problem with a video or audio clip and need to replace it? If I delete that audio or video from the slide, what happens to all the closed captioning that you added to it? I'm assuming it's deleted when you delete it from the slide.
If I export the captions before deleting the audio/video file, can I then reimport them when I replace the audio/video file with a fixed version?

You can have CC with Slide audio and Multi Slide video in Captivate.
If you will delete the slide audio or Multi slide Video, then CC will get disabled on that slide, but same CC text will retain there as Slide notes.
Now, once you will re insert the audio or multi slide video you can mark that slide notes as CC again, or can have new CC.
So, even after deleting the audio and multi slide video, CC will not be deleted.

What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.
Not tech savvy at all and barely understand basics. I need very simple and easy to understand explanations.

Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.

Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret.
