What happened to all my iPhoto pictures?

I was working with photos yesterday and all of the sudden all my photos disappeared. I had a few thousand one minute and the next I had only a few...what happened? I recally making some selections (can't remember what exactly) so I might have caused this but I certainly didn't get a warning nor did I suspect this was what I had selected. Perhaps I selected another file for photos or something? Help!

Carbonite has saved me (and my husband) 4 times in the last 3 years and I have had complete meltdowns which included iPhoto in 1 case. Never had loss of data with them or the backups. Naturally, one has to reload programs and start from scratch sometimes (like I did with the meltdowns). Oh, and I spent a lot of time at the Genious Bar getting iPhoto and other programs tuned up after the downloads! There are things they don't back-up (obviously programs and email) but so far, no problems with back ups. They do take a week for my computer, because I've got so many photos, books and songs, and my husband's small office PC took only about 8 hours (and that was with a DSL). I really don't want to back-up at home because that doesn't help much if you have a fire or theft. I prefer Carbonite and would recommend them to anyone.

We have no way of knowing what goes on on your machine. All we can tell is that your iPhoto library is missing and iPhoto can't find it. If you can't find then I the only thing you can do is restore from your Back Up.

Yup, kind of like anything else you accidentally break that is more cost effective to replace than to repair. Keep that iPad away from the toddler

Nothing. The photos are in the library and uninstalling iPhotos should have no impact on the library.
Having said that a backup of the library is a good idea

I want to buy and install iLife 8 but as I have never upgraded to a new version before I don't know how you do this (apart from purchasing it of course).

If you have a book started in iPhoto 6 then you might want to make a backup copy of the library and the application as some book themes are not included in iPhoto 7. iPhoto 7 will continue to work with that theme but if you switch to another to see what it looks like you can't go back. Another approach is to make a copy of the book in iPhoto 6 for backup just in case, select it and type Command-D.
It apperars that the new large hardcover books have printed dust jackets with the cover photo instead of the photo on the hard cover.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.
Music Rescue is a program you can use to transfer any and all data (music, movies, pictures..) from your iPod to your computer, and iTunes.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

Basically, the computer thinks the music is 'lost'. Follow the prompts and try to locate it. It should navigate to the files and redraw the links which should make that pop up go away

What happened to the pull down picture control for desktop pictures? Today as I was changing my desktop picture I saw the control that allows you to adjust the picture vannish!
Where did it go and how do I get it back?

Solved my own problem. From the finder I opened a picture that I wanted to use for my desktop with Firefox and from there I opened the Desktop and Screensaver preferences and the missing pulldown was back.
My theory of the problem is that I had selected the "Change Picture" box and that eliminated the picture adjustment pull-down menu and it didn't come back after deselecting the "Change Picture" box.

If you delete purchases, they are no longer stored in iCloud.

Hey apple what did you do that for?! Usually software gets better in new versions but this is a huge step back! Maybe i just can't find them but that's just as bad. if they are there they should be easy to find (thogh I don't think they are.)
I'm losing some respect for apple because of stunts like this.

I still don't know why they had to dumb down the program so people could post little movies...you can still do that with the original iMovie.
Apple had found that many iLife users were not using iMovie, some would argue that iMovie 06 became "too good". Others will say that many of the features of iMovie 06 made it hard for beginners to learn, so iMovie 08 is usually easier for the absolute beginner.
When iLife 08 is installed, all of the old applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it. Most owners of iLife 08 I know use iMovie 06. (I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.)
If you like iMovie 06 better, as many do, you can continue to use it. I find that it works perfectly with my Mac Pro and the latest Mac OS.
