What happened to Aperture 2.2?

Because of it being an Apple application, when I bought Aperture 2 a few months ago, I expected it move though a series of progressions the way that OS X does, such as 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc. I thought that it would remain current for a long time and make incremental improvements such as 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and so on. Does this mean that I can look forward to Aperture 4 coming out a few months from now?

To use your analogy:
10.1 would be equivalent to Aperture 1
10.2 would be equivalent to Aperture 2
10.3 would be equivalent to Aperture 3
10.2.2 would be equivalent to Aperture 2.2
Nothing is out of place except for your unfortunate timing in buying Aperture 2 - but such is the ways of technology. Sooner or later you are going to buy something when an upgrade is right around the corner - it's just the way it is.
Aperture 3 looks to be a substantial upgrade fully taking advantage of SL - if you are using 10.6 upgrade and enjoy! If you are going to begrudge Apple for $99 for an upgrade then you must get stressed out over lots of things in life that in the grand scheme of things are pretty inconsequential.

  • What happens to Aperture hierarchy?

Other people look at my Aperture Library on iPad, AppleTV and other devices but it's impossible to find a photograph because the hierarchy is lost. Everything seems to be at the root level. Why does it have to be this way and how do you deal with it?
(Projects are separate but folders of folders of projects are all at the root level.)

The hierarchy does get shattered a bit somewhat, depending on what options you select in iTunes. The main thing to consider is that in iTunes, you can choose to sync everything (probably not very realistic), or only certain Albums, Events, Faces, & Places. Make sure to check the things you want sync'd.
If your Projects are in folders, you can check a folder to sync, but it won't sync the folder itself, but all the projects & albums within it. So if your projects are all terribly named (say, "Day 1", "Day 2") because your folders are named, you may want to rename the projects you plan on syncing.
Also, when on the iPad, don't forget to look at the top level of the iPad's Photos app, and look at the top of the screen. (Use the Back arrow repeatedly until you get to the top level of the app). From here, you can select Photos (everything), Photo Stream, Albums, Events (Projects), Faces, Places.
So the hierarchy does change, in terms of Aperture folders not being considered. But if your projects are named properly, you can use the iPad's 'Events' view to pick up entire projects.
If it still gets unmanageable, create a folder within Aperture called 'iPad Sync", and make albums of what you want to sync in there. So "Tora Bora 2011", "Christmas 2009", "Arfunkle Wedding", or whatever sorts of photos you want to sync. Then, only sync those and they'll appear in the iPad's Albums, neatly organized.

  • What happened to aperture?

unsupported image format problem...won't go away...
printing: sometimes it works, sometimes it does not....and of course the magenta black point comp. thing....
    slow adjustments...
my mac runs perfectly fine otherwise....i have re-installed aperture, SNL, printer drivers..have followed all tips and tricks found online....this just does not work right!
the only thing aperture has over LR is great DAM....solid....if that is gone, what is left?
this is not an issue of switching, this an issue of what the **** do i tell my clients!!!
and bug reports and emails and posts might as well go into the trash....there is NO response from apple on this.....
if this was LR, one of the software designers would be here at least explaining what is going on and troubleshooting and outlining the expected fix.......

OK I deserved most of that...
I have not gone on to Snow Leopard yet as I continue to read about the issues, this is part of the research I was referring to, so am unable to attempt to replicate the specific issues and provide assistance.
Keynote is certainly used in a pro events environment and I am sure many offices are using the other two iWork apps. So whilst not a $1k plus app that does not mean they are not pro apps, hang on Aperture is only a couple of hundred dollars, so how would you define a Pro App, certainly not price point.
Granted Shake has been dropped, it was always a stand alone and not part of FCS.
Agree that there are apps that come and go, some fall by the way side as better ones are developed by competitors and others leave you scratching your head.
You are right there are some people experiencing some real issues with Snow Leopard and Aperture, lets hope that there is a fix very soon as I am hanging out to upgrade.
Agree on another comment that it would be nice for Apple to acknowledge they dedicate someone to the forums as part of their product development, we could then all feel better knowing that the issues are being read, rather than they might be... I can understand not having someone answering questions, in doing so the "community" would change and perhaps be become a service you pay for.

  • I would like to migrate from Aperture. What happens to my Masters which are on a RAID array and then what do I do with my Vault which is on a separate Drive please ?

I am sorry, but I do noisy understand what happens to my RAW original Master files, which I keep offline on a RAID array and then what I do with my Vault which as all my edited photos ? Sorry for such a simple question, but would someone please help my lift the fog ?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Dear John ,
Apologies, as I am attempting to get to the bottom of this migration for my wife ( who is away on assignment ) and I am not 100% certain on the technical aspects of Aperture, so excuse my ignorance.
She has about 6TB worth of RAW Master images ( several 100 thousand ) which, as explained, are on an external RAID drive. She uses a separate Drive as a Vault . Can I assume that this Vault contains all of her edits, file structures , Metadata, etc ?
So, step by step........She can Import into Lightroom her Referenced Masters from her RAID and still keep them there ? Is that correct ?
The Managed Files that are backed up by her Vault , are in the pictures folder of her MacPro, but not in a structure that looks like her Aperture library ? This means Lightroom will just organize all the Managed files, simply by the date in the Metadata ? Am I correct ( Sorry for being so tech illiterate ).
How do I ensure she imports into Lighgtroom in exactly the same format as she runs her workflow in Aperture ?  ( Projects, that are organized by year and shoot location and Albums within those projects with sub-locations, or species , etc ). What exactly do I need to do in Aperture please to organize Managed Files to create a mirror structure of Aperture on my internal Hard Drive ?
There are a couple of points I am unsure about in regard to Lightroom. Does it work in the same way as Aperture ? Meaning, can she still keep Master Files on an external RAID and Lightroom will reference them ? If the answer is yes, how do you back up your Managed ( edited ) work in Lightroom ? ( Can you still use an external Drive as a Vault ? ) . Will the vault she uses now be able to continue to back up Managed Files post migration ?

  • HT4007 What happened to my keywords? Since the last update of aperture I can't see my keywords anymore! Who will help me find them back?

What happened to my keywords? Since the last update of aperture I can't see my keywords anymore! Every photo (1000s of images) had several keywords, but they're all gone. (Or at least I can't see them anymore.) Who will help me find them back?

You need to enable the display for metadata in Browser and Viewer.
There are several places how whereyou can turn it on; for example, from the main menu bar "view" menu:
View > Metadata display > Viewer > Show Metadata
View > Metadata display > Browser > Show Metadata
You need to configure the Metadata shown in these overlays.
    Use
View > Metadata display > Browser > Customize
Enable all tags you want in the left column of this panel. The "keyword" are enabled in the "Content" section of the left colum.

  • HT204476 So what happens if I accidentally delete the Migrated Aperture Library?

Just read the Help note on Apple's site about how Photos doesn't actually take up additional space on my hard drive. To be honest, that wasn't clear to me when I was looking around my Pictures directory this morning and I almost deleted the original Aperture Library.
    What happens if I do?

I think I misread your question.
The way In understand it is that the hardlinks when associated with multiple folders result in more than 1 folder referencing the same files - so long as 1 folder is referencing the items the original files do not delete - where are they? - I suspect to the user that is hidden and if you get rid of Aperture library the original files stay somewhere in the file system but remain associated to the Photos library.
I agree for those of us who worry about things like this there's a concern we'll inadvertently delete originals, but I believe TD's advice is correct.
Either way, I would probably make a backup of any library I was about to delete to an external drive plus/minus Time Machine to be on the safe side.
Unless you really need to delete Aperture library might be as well just to leave it and ignore it until you're happy Photos does what you need.

  • What happened to Export naming options?

What happened to the Export options?
I had a preset that renamed my images in the format desired by my newspaper. Now, all I see is the ability to adjust the size, and the gamma (?)?
Perhaps the options moved? I know! They moved the options over with the colored icons? Along with the missing socks from the dryer!
And seriously. Aperture could export and name my pix like this:
    20120406_NCFE MSmakeitgreen1
    No mas?

    OK. Me = silly.
You see, folks, the feature I wanted shows up when you export (Original or Version),an then chose to edit  the name format…

  • What happened to TGA/Targa file format support?

Tonight I tried to import some old scans of photos—I'm cleaning up my files and organizing. Well, back in the day (1993 or so) the scanning system I worked on used Targa (.tga) as its output format. So I have a number of them.
When I tried to import them into Aperture, it would not accept them. I tried to drag and drop and do a manual import. On the manual import, the thumbnails wouldn't even appear.
I get that Targa is not a common file format these days, and I don't see Targa in the list of supported file formats for Aperture 3, but what happened? TGA is in the list of supported file formats for Aperture 2.
I'm a little concerned about having to convert all my Targas to TIFFs, but that's not the end of the world. What frightens me is: how many files did Aperture just throw away when I converted my library from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3? I don't know whether I imported any of my old Targas before upgrading to Aperture 3, but if I did, are they now gone?

I seriously doubt they were deleted. Open up the library package folder then search for .tga within that folder.

  • What happens when image count rolls over?

MY Canon Xsi is about to hit 10,000, and will roll over in the counting. What will happen in Aperture if I am using a referenced master setup? What about if I just change things to a all incorporated database?
Or, would it be better to start importing with customer names to eliminate duplicates?
I do have 25,000 shots from an old Pentax, so I already have some duplicates with 3 matches.
    Thanks.

I love the XSi. Great little camera!
The counter will restart and the camera will begin writing to a new directory on the memory card. I believe it'll start writing in CANON101 instead of CANON100, or something like that
A standard naming convention might be a good idea, but it's really up to you.

  • What happens to my local files once I activate iCloud?

Does my HD automatically delete everything and free up space?  Before I turn on iCloud  services and put my entire music and photo library 'up there' I want to understand what happens locally. I want to free up some HD space, but I'd like to keep a copy of everything locally on storage media.  Do I need to do that first?  Or do I need to manually clean up my HD once my content is pushed up to the cloud?

Does my HD automatically delete everything and free up space?  Before I turn on iCloud  services and put my entire music and photo library 'up there' I want to understand what happens locally.
    What will happen:
When you move a file from your internal drive to iCloud Drive, it will really be moved. Deleted from the internal drive and stored in iCloud.
But once the file has been uploaded, the Mac will download a shadow copy of the file from iCloud, and this file will be stored locally on your Mac  in your user library and also be included in your Time Machine backups.  There is a short interval, where you neither can access the file in iCloud nor on your Mac.  It is safer to copy to iCloud and not to move.  Once you are sure, the document can be accessed in iCloud and uploaded successfully, you can delete the original.  But because of the shadow copies you cannot save any space on your Mac using iCloud Drive.
Document types you can store on iCloud Drive:
Basically, you can store any type of document on iCloud Drive, as long as it is smaller than 15GB.
But for Music, it would be easier to use iTunes Match. This will sync your iTunes library between devices. And other than iCloud Drive, you can store the entire music library in iTunes Match and save space on your mac.
For photos, iCloud Drive is not optimal.  You can store folders with photos, but they will not show up on your mobile devices in the Photos.app. And you cannot store your iPhoto Library or Aperture Library on iCloud Drive. Photo libraries need to be stored on a locally mounted drive. Shared volumes and cloud storage are not supported by iPhoto or Aperture.
Apple is developing iCloud Photo Library (Beta). See this link:  iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
This library is already available on mobile iOS8 devices, but not yet on the Mac. It is supposed to be supported later this year, when Apple releases a Photos.app for the Mac. Until then, you can only access this photo library using the web interface at    https://www.icloud.com/  using the Photos(Beta) app on that page.

  • What happened to my masters? Please help!!!

I have worked so far with aperture on my MacBookPro 17 storing the masters and library on an external 500 Gb Lacie drive with no problems. I recently purchased a MacPro and decided to copy the entire folder with all of my photos from the Lacie to an internal disk on my MacPro.
So I plugged the Lacie on the MacPro and copy/paste the entire folder (library included).
I then installed aperture on the MacPro and assigned the library located on the new drive. At first when opening aperture it said masters were offline so I had to RELOCATE all the masters in all projects.
What happened next: I reconnected the Lacie on my MacBook Pro and opened aperture. All masters are unavailable! Opened the folder on the Lacie that I previously copied from and found that almost all images are missing. Reopened the folder on the MacPro drive and discovered that almost all of my images are duplicated! eg. image001 and image001 (1).
Anyone experienced something similar or just have an idea please help!
Thank you in advance for your support
    Regards
    Guido

I'm not sure I can help but I will ask a few questions to get it started.
    1. You do have your masters, right?
    2. When you say you are looking at the "folder" with all of your masters on the Lacie drive, do you mean you are looking at the contents of the Aperture library on that drive, using "show package contents", or are your images actually in a folder. If they are in a folder, they are referenced. That is an important distinction.
Sounds like Aperture wasn't aware of the images you copied to the Mac Pro and "relocated" the ones from the Lacie drive to the new location on the Mac Pro then deleted them from the Lacie drive. The deletion surprises me but that's what it looks like it did.
I think I'd try to start over. I would:
    1) Back up that new folder on your Mac Pro just to be sure you don't lose your masters. Truly, don't skip this step.
    2) Assuming that the masters are referenced (i.e., in a folder, not in the library), copy all of the masters (the originals, not the copies) back to where they were on the Lacie drive then make sure it works with your MacBook.
    3) Delete everything from the folder on the Mac Pro.
    4) I'll drop out from here because I have never moved a library with referenced images and someone else could probably give you better advice on how to do it right.

  • WhAT HAPPENED TO AE Plugin support????????

What happened to AE plugin support under FCP 5.1.1 Intel?
I was told that the plugins would run under Rossetta, and I purchased Color Finesse 2 (ouch!!!) and it does not work. The guy from synthetic aperture (company who makes CF) told me ,"Unfortunately, the Intel version of FCP 5.1.1 does not support After Effects plug-ins."
    Is this true???
If so, we need to let Apple know that this is a disaster. AE Plugin support is one of the most attractive features of FCP expandability.
    Question? Comments? outrage? Please post....

I can sympathise - just one of those IT timing things.
    Been caught myself.
Sometimes you have to wait for full support, which is frequently out of Apple's control - eg Adobe is classic. (you might remember - What was the very last heavy hitting app to get written for OS X ? Yup - PhotoShop.)
Or have the workaround figured out in advance.
Looks like you've got one ...

  • What happens on iCloud (ex. contacts) when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?

What happens on iCloud when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?  For example if we all choose to use iCloud for contacts, are they all merged together?  We use the same Apple ID so we can use find my iPhone to keep track of the whole family.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
    1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
    2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
    3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
    4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
    5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
    6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.
