What happened to character palette!!??

Hi -not sure what happened -- over many years have found this to be extremely useful, now its just a pain in the butt. Now it is called Character Viewer. Has waay too much info -- too many choices in dropdown, there must be 100 different language sets, from Basic Latin to Supp. Private Use Area -B is the last one... Cyrillic, Japanese, Chinese, Tai Le, Runic, selections full of tiny little boxes, this is useful ... you NAME it.
I just want the things I use: General Punctuation, Currency Symbols, Letterlike symbols, etc. -- I used to have this - it used to be user-friendly, now its a joke. I am not sure what happened, but one day it was changed.... upgrade to Snow Leopard?
Can anyone help me to get the basic Character Palette back, and ease of use? Or set up this one to work like that? I've looked and looked and can't see any type of filtering.
At the top it says Unicode | Other Encodings | Favorites
It used to say more like View (with a dropdown and didn't have SO MANY choices) | By Category | Favorites
I hope someone knows how to change this back to this easier format -- I'm sick of screwing around with it. Thanks!

I need to write an app that connects to an Oracle DB. What happened to the EOF palette that was in NeXTSTEP? Did something replace it? How are database applications written now days using the NS framework on Mac OS X?

What happened to character kerning in Pages 5.0? Is there a way to do it, or will it come back?

In the previous version of Pages, you could clean up the presentation of text by adjusting the character kerning of individual paragraphs. If you had a paragraph that ending with a single word, by adjust the kerning, up or down by 1 or 2 percent, that would move that word to the previous line or add a word from the line above.
Like the paragraph above, I would adjust the kerning to add one or two words to the third line. In Pages 5.0, I do not see a way to do this. Does anyone? Or will Apple be fixing this omission?

The odd thing is there was someone here the other day saying they liked the new Pages 5 because it is much more productive and intuitive.
I know we all think and behave differently, but how is hidden and multiple mouse clicks buried, "more productive and intuitive"?

What happened to my character palette?

My eMac needed a new logic board (thankfully covered by Apple!). Before I took in in for repairs, I had made a clone to an external drive. Today, two months later, I finally got it back from the shop. So I hooked up my external drive, erased my internal drive, and did a reverse clone.
Then I played around with everything for several hours to make sure all was well. Everything seemed to be in working order. However, when I opened a textedit document I had created in the past, I noticed something odd. The crown symbols I had inserted were gone! Wherever I had inserted a crown, there was now a square, with a sort of mis-shapen circle inside of it.
I immediately checked my character palette, and the crown, and many other symbols, were gone. Instead, there were blank boxes. A little yellow box would appear on the boxes with some unicode gibberish. Under the character info. drop down, it says "no glyph in this font."
I am a computer novice, and do not know much about the character palette, or unicode, or fonts (could this be font related?) It all worked fine before my repair, and my external clone was obviously not affected by the repair. How do I get my character palette back to the way it was? Is there a specific preference I need to trash?

Indeed, it has nothing to do with Character Palette. The font you used to create this character is apparently no longer on your OS, or the font which is set in your doc for that character does not contain it. If you could provide the Unicode number (top line of the yellow box) of the character you are talking about, I could probably tell you what font is needed.

What happened to all the foreign alphabets in the character palette?

Can anyone tell me why all the foreign alphabets disappeared from the character palette when I "upgraded" to Lion? Is there any way I can download them back into the character palette?

You just need to go to the gear wheel at the top left, click on it and select customize, and then check the boxes for all the alphabets you want, plus Unicode.

Character palette easier than keyboard shortcuts?

Am I the only one who hates using the character palette in FM? I find it more time-consuming (unless the character I want is at the top and it just happens to default to my current font) and its hard to read.
Any tips on how to quickly locate what you want in the palette?

I don't quite follow the relationship between thread title and first sentence … but I'll throw in a couple of observations anyway :-}
the only time I ever choose a font in FM is when I'm setting up a (paragraph or character) style
applying styles with F8/F9 is fast and easy
every corporate PC I've ever worked on offers far more fonts than I want to use – where I've been allowed to (or at least, not forbidden to or prevented …) I've moved superfluous fonts to their own directory to make navigating through the ones I do want easier
If you're asking about Format > Font, it appears I can type a single letter to get to the first font with that letter in the name; bonus, I get a sample!

Plist question (loginwindow, HIToolbox, character palette)

There was a problem with the special character palette from Textedit recurring at login and logout on my pb. It happened after I quit Textedit without closing the palette first (I would think it should close automatically since it is part of the Textedit app?), leaving the palette still active when I logout.
I found posters who had same prob in the forum and followed the general advice of deleting comp.apple.loginwindow.plist, and it seemed to work. But today it happens again and deleting the loginwindow plist has no effect. Checked the content of the plist - it does not contain any suspicious item like last time. Search the forum again for answers. People with similar problems w/ char palette (don't know from Textedit or international language menu) popping out when it is not wanted would trash the HIToolbox.plist and/or the CharPalette plist. So I did that too, and the TextEdit plist also (why not since the OS will generate new plists & I don't have significant pref to preserve).
This method is working again. At least for now. But through this exercise I discovered I know so little about these xml files. One of the files I deleted is
com.apple.HIToolbox.000a95b1a702.plist
Does anyone know what this item is?

Everytime I try to access the character palette in Illustrator it unexpectedly quits. I've contacted Apple ( as the problem only started when I moved over to my new laptop) but they are convinced it is an Adobe issue.
They described the problem as a 'Kernel Panic', from a bit of Googling I know this is not good. What can I do to try and resolve this?
I've tried resetting my Illustrator preferences (as I've read these can become corrupted when transferred from one computer to another) and uninstalling then reinstalling Illustrator. On the Apple side I've tried starting the computer in Safe Mode, used Apple Diagnostics, validated all my fonts and reset my fonts to standard settings (as I was convinced that the fact it only happened when I was trying to access the character palette meant it had to be a font issue)
The only other glitch i've had with the new laptop is with Helvetica Neue. Whenever I tried to export a document containing Helvetica Neue it transformed the font into squares. I read that this was due to a clash between the new version of Helevetica Neue on my new laptop and the one on my old laptop. I replaced the new version with the one on my old laptop and the problem resolved itself- however I'm now worried that by doing this I might have caused the problems I'm now having as Helvetica Neue is a system font.
What can I do?

When you uninstalled and reinstalled AI did you run the Cleaner tool in between?

Character palette in CS6 flaw!

This is bad news. When I select a font onscreen and open the character palette, then click on the font drop down, it is not automatically bringing up the selected font...meaning, it just begins at the very top of the list with 'A'. So...if it is something in the Helvetica family that I want to change to, say, Helvetica Neue, or what have you, I need to scroll all the way down my enormous font list over & over again. God forbid it be a font under 'T'.
Is there any way to correct this issue, or has CS6 just not up to it?!

It is nothing to do with Number of Recent Fonts to Display set to '0'. As someone else mentioned, perhaps setting this to a very high number may help out a bit.
The problem is when I select my font in the character palette, click the drop down to reveal my entire list of fonts - the list does not auto jump to the font I am currently using.
It brings me up to the very top of the list at 'A', so I have to manually scroll down every time through the entire alphabet.
As you know many font families have completely different fonts to display THIN, SEMIBOLD, or what have you, vs. the different attributes of that family come up in the field below the font name (in the character palette). This is really frustrating as even if I attempt to manually type in the name, many times it won't jump to that font in the list due to shortened / abbreviated name.
It's a real headache and in Illustrator even more so as Illustrator doesn't seem to have the scroll option available. Meaning, you need to click the arrow icon and wait for it to scroll all the way down the list.
Any other ideas or preferences that can be changed?

Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
Restart your Mac.
Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
Exit System Preferences.
In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

Character palette window malfunction

In trying to sort out a problem I was having with non-English fonts, I went to the Help Viewer and thought I had a lead with the Special Characters selection under the Edit menu. I opened the Special Characters window and found a variety of non-English fonts (I was specially interested in Hebrew). The instructions said to open an application and select the charachter. I opened Textedit and made an attempt which did not work that I could tell. What it did do, was cause the Character Palette window to malfunction. It flashes partially open on an irregular but frequent basis, perhaps connected to program activity. The window appears in the middle of the screen, it is titled and has the litlle rotating activity icon in the middle but is blank otherwise. It remains for less than a second and then disappears. When I look at it with the Console utility, it gives this sort of message:

Fully understand the frustration
Open "Activity Monitor" in /Applications/Utilities/
On the panel you will see all of the programs in memory
scroll down and one click on "ChaPaletteServer" it will highlight
click on "Quit Process" at the top of the screen
that should clear it
To use another language I select it in System Preferences > International > Input Menu
enable "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
at the bottom of the pane
enable "Allow a different input source for each document"
and "Show input menu in menu bar"
Open Textedit
click on the flag icon on the menu bar
select "Show keyboard viewer"
select the language
and away you go - the keyboard viewer shows the characters as available on your keyboard
You can access the International Prefs from the icon as well so if you want to deselect a language you can but change back to English (if that's you normal language) before doing so

Character Palette no longer works properly

I use the character palette frequently and it worked beautifully in 10.4.4, especially in Keynote. Now I can not use Math symbols unless I select the symbol font. Before the symbol would appear when I double clicked it in the palette window regardless of which font was selected. Further, Keynote presentations I had created under system 10.4.4 were changed so that the characters I had selected previously are gone. Now I have to reenter every character and that means undoing the build that is associated with the line in the slide. Is there a fix for this? Is this a quirk of the latest upgrade to 10.4.5? Any help to salvage hours of work will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed the first time that the character for "proportional to" would not work. Also the Boolean algebra symbols do not work. Only the Capitol Pi and Sigma and integral signs work. The triple equal sign, congruency sign, and nearly equal character do not come through. They did in the past. It is possible that these characters were automatically converted to Apple Symbol or gothic without my being aware of it. I did not check when they were used in the past.
I do not know what caused the loss, but suspect it is somehow part of the new system update. If I can use Apple Gothic or Apple symbol fonts for the symbols I need then I will adapt and use them. On the other hand if I have some kind of error in the code in my system or the application I need to know it.
I would prefer to be able to use the character palette directly as in the past, but perhaps that is wishful thinking.
I did reload Keynote 3 and it made no difference. I am loathe to reload the system and revert back if it can be avoided. thank you for your input thus far, it has helped me sort out what is going on.

What happened to the show bookmarks button firefox 3.6.x

In Firefox 3.6 and all previous versions I have used, there was a button on the bookmarks toolbar near the New-Tab/New-Window buttons.
The button was purplish with a white "star" in the center. Clicking the button would open the sidebar and display the bookmarks in the sidebar.
Starting with Firefox 3.6.3 (I never tried 3.6.2), this "Show-Bookmarks-in-Sidebar" button has disappeared.
Now, in order to show the bookmarks ion the sidebar, you have to click:
[View]=>[Sidebar]=>[Bookmarks]
What happened to this button ?
Can I customize FF to bring this button back ?
(If I rt-click=>customize, I see all kinds of buttons I can add to the toolbar, but the bookmarks button is not there).

Favorite glyphs in Character Palette

In Panther, I was able to put frequently used special glyphs like © into the Favorites panel of Character Palette so that I did not have to hunt for them all over Unicode space. In Tiger, the Favorites panel still shows up in Character Palette, but there seems to be no way of adding anything to it. The "Add to Favorites" button at the bottom of Character Palette in Panther has been replaced by a Spotlight query field. So what's the deal here? This is very un-Apple.
