What happened to iMovie?

What happened to iMovie?
I'm actually a FCP user who would very often use iMove to do very quick and intuitive creative work.
I still have my G5 with iMove 4 installed and I recently started exploring the newest version of iMovie 7.1 on my MacBook Pro.
I don't get it! iMovie was an amazingly intuitive program. Now it's barely usable... very PC-ish.
Everything right down to basic project management is very clumsy and unlike a mac application.
What a shame.
I know I don't have any right to complain about a program which is basically free but usually products become better as they evolve.
I haven't been to this forum in years. Has anyone else found that the new version of iMovie is much more difficult and unintuitive than versions up to iMovie HD 6?
best,
g

I do a lot of work using imovie. I edit football videos in hd for a local high school team. I started using the old version of imovie and digital 8 tapes (obviously not in hd). I still use the old imovie only with a new hd camera (60 gig internal hard drive). I bought the new version of imovie and was very disappointed with it.
The old version of imovie was a perfect fit for me. High school football videos, the way the coaches want them, tend to be about 50 minutes long. I was able to use the chapters option to make it easy for the coaches to go to a particular quarter and watch the game or start from the beginning and just run the entire game. And it looked great.
The new version is very difficult to use on anything over 10 minutes. It is very frustrating dragging clips from the events screen to the projects screen. It was not able to create chapters. The only option I had available for the coaches was to make separate projects for each quarter. The big disadvantage being not able to start the game from the beginning and let it run to the end of the game. The ultimate problem is the amount of time it takes to create an idvd project from the current imovie. Using the media browser to create the movie into a form idvd can use is long, and probably adds 2x (and then some) the normal time to make a dvd.
The new version is fine for the shorter films. It has very good looking graphics for titles etc. However, all else being equal, I use the old imovie at this point. Too many advantages for using the old imovie. Easy to use, chapters, less time to create an idvd project etc. The coaches usually want their game dvd's by the next day at noon. I can do this using the old imovie. Not so with the current imovie.
I would not be a supporter of the current imovie.
If anyone at apple reads this post, please add this to the large number of people who have expressed dissatisfaction with the current imovie.
I hope this helps you with your problem

    Nothing.

It won't happen to delete anything.
... my projects I Have been working on and my clips I have imported into imovie 08?
Your projects will be right where you left them. Your clips are not imported into the iMovie application, they are imported into their respective projects.

  • What Happened? Imovie used to play .mpg with audio.

I have a new Imac 27in. The firsst few days after opening it. I hooked up my panasonic video camera, and uploaded and edited several videos, in .mpg. Now i cannot even get Imoive to recognize a .mpg. I can get quicktime to play the video but without audio. Quicktime used to play the audio also. I never changed any settings. I do not know what happened.
    Any way to fix this.

The Apple cable below is the one I use, but I've also used non-Apple cables with no issues.

  • What happens to iMovie projects with the demise of MobileMe Gallery?

Will a new "hosting service" be able to pick up, in tact, video productions created on iMovie and published to MobileMe Gallery?
Who might be some potential "hosting services" that could guide me in an orderly and relatively painless transfer of my iMovie projects?
I'm looking for a paid service that can offer a quality presentation of my work...versuses a "just OK" free service.
Please communicate in layman's terms...I'm not particularly tech-savy.

I too am not a techie...but with the assistance of the SmugMug customer support team, I now have a very viable replacment for MobileMe when the Apple service ends in June.  All I had to do is go to iDisk where my iMovie projects currently reside and download each project to my computer, creating a file.  That file can then be uploaded to SmugMug. As with MobileMe, the publishing process (uploading) takes awhile. A six minute iMovie took about an hour.  But once in place, you can either distribute via SmugMug's broådcasting system or you can create a short version of the URL (the site address) and include that in a standard email to family and friends.
When I learned of the demise of MM...I was fearful that would be the end of my iMovie projects.  Definitely not so with the discovery of SmugMug! And like I said in the second posting above, the good folks at SmugMug are totally on top of the whole customer support thing...so you won't be out there wondering what to do next.

  • What happened in iMovie?

I dragged all of my mp4 videos to a new project in iMovie and all of the sudden when I move the cursor to one of the slide it doesn't change scene anymore. It freezes but the audio is still playing just fine. I'm using go pro to record all of my mp4s. What should I do? I have 70 videos that need to be editted for the next couple days!

The iMovie Help file returns 0 results for a search on "chapter." Sounds like it's been removed...again... Maybe an update will restore it. I guess we all need to be thankful they're letting us continue to use iMovie 9.0.9.

  • What happened to the stuff in the trashcan when iMovie crashed?

I was editing my movie last night and had just finished my final cuts when iMovie crashed and closed. Right before this happened I had about 8 GB worth of material in the iMovie trashcan. I restarted iMovie and found that my clips were still on the storyline, but without any of the edits I had made before the crash, and that the iMovie trashcan was empty. The 8 GB that had been in the trashcan though, were never freed up. What happened to those 8 GB????????
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's also possible you were misled a bit by the way iMovie calculates the size of the iMovie Trash.
If your project has a large iMovie video clip (a clip with a large Media file) and you discard even a small portion of that clip, iMovie describes the clip in the Trash has being the same size as its Media file. The result is that the size of the Trash often SIGNIFICANTLY overstated.
In fact, emptying the iMovie Trash might not recover any disk space at all. Because of iMovie's non-destructive editing feature, if any OTHER clip relies on the discarded clip's Media file, the entire file will be preserved. Emptying the iMovie Trash will discard the clip on the Timeline, but not discard any Media files, where all the big stuff is.
So I wouldn't pay too much attention to the Trash size reported by iMovie. It tells you the maximum possible disk space that MIGHT be recovered. But it may be far, far less.

Did you do the moving of the image file in the Finder or do you have a reference library as asked by Larry? In either case moving the files is a recipe for disaster as you've found out. You must either move the files back to their original locations or try to get those photos back into iPhoto as follows:
1 - Find the folder you moved the files into and COPY it to the Desktop.
2 - in iPhoto delete the photos that you're having the problems with as you normally would even though you can't see see them. Also delete all the photos that are in the folder you moved the other files into.
3 - drag the folder on the Desktop into iPhoto to import them as one event. If you get a duplicate warning I'd let it import the duplicate and use Duplicate Annihilator to find them so you can cull out the duplicate you don't want.
Other than that you might have to start over from scratch as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

I recently created a video in iMovie that I later uploaded to YT. I had a message from YT a day later saying that the music I used in my video was detected as 3rd party content. I used music found in the music and sound effect section. The artist is listed as Apple Inc. What happened?
This is the message I received:

"Kadeem UIM-Trust Issues (Instrumental)", sound recording administered by:INgrooves Your dispute awaiting response by 12/08/12
    What does this mean?
After your dispute has been submitted, your video will soon be available on YouTube without ads for third parties. This is a temporary status and might change at any time.Learn more about copyright on YouTube.

This question comes up from time to time. YouTube and Facebook are both wrong.
There are a number of con-men who think that they can earn a quick buck from claiming that they own the copyright to Apple’s royalty-free jingles and sound effects included with the iLife applications. These are all free to use, as clearly stated in section 2.C of the iLife Software License Agreement:
“You may use the Apple and third party audio content (“Audio Content”) contained in or otherwise included with the Apple software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual samples, sound sets, or audio content may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound files, sound effects or music beds.”

You should this (also providing the above link) when following the dispute process with YouTube.

  • IMovie is not letting me drag and drop transitions, music, text boxes. Worked fine all along and now nothing. What happened?

iMovie has always let me "drag and drop" transitions, music, text boxes etc into my Project. This morning it is not allowing me to "drag and drop" anything. This is for a client and I am so frustrated. What happened to make it stop letting me "drag and drop"?

I have only dragged Titles to the project. When I did, it worked best not to drag and release onto the video strip (like with the old version) but just above the strip. When you drag and hover above the strip you get a little pointer to the starting point on the strip. Hope this helps.

  • Just updated iMovie today. What happened to the Ripple transition?

Just updated iMovie today. What happened to the Ripple transitions?

I had the same problem.  After about and hour with Apple care and several different people, I was told Apple eliminated the Ripple transition as part of the 9.0.6 update.  It's gone...no way to get it back in 9.0.6.  I was just finishing a project that used a bunch of this transition, so I found a work around.  I used Time Machine to revert back to the old version of iMovie (9.0.4).  When asked if I wanted to replace or keep both files, I elected to keep both files.  I now have a version of iMovie called iMovie (Original).  That still has the Ripple effect.  Seems to be working fine also.  I can't image why Apple did this.  I left feedback in the feedback forum.  Recommend we all do it so they will place the Ripple back.  This is the first time I've really used iMovie for a big project.  I've discovered I'm probably better off with something like Final Cut or Adobe Elements.  That's what I know.  Hope it helps.

  • Help! my iMovie doesn't open anymore...what happened?

I have run into a few problems with trying to become more independent in editing my own original recorded materials.
Starting here at the beginning of my struggles.....*my iMovie will not open.*
when i go into Finder to find it and then click on it it says, "The volume for iMovie cannot be found"
    what does this mean?
    where did it go?
    what can i do?
any suggestions and wisdom would be appreciated.
    thank you.

    ..have i updated my machine?
    good question.
    I have no idea.
how would I know? (ha!, but really that is a serious question.)
I purchased a new hard-drive in Jan....maybe I need to go back to "my mac guy"?
Can you tell this is not my forte!?
and I have no idea what version of iMovie I have (had?) because I cannot get it to open to find out..is there another way to find out?
    thanks

  • How do I install iLife 8 and what happens to all my old projects?

I want to buy and install iLife 8 but as I have never upgraded to a new version before I don't know how you do this (apart from purchasing it of course).
Step by step, how do you install the disc?
What happens to all my existing and work in progress iMovie and iDVD projects? Can I continue to work on them or should I wait until I have finished them before upgrading?

If you have a book started in iPhoto 6 then you might want to make a backup copy of the library and the application as some book themes are not included in iPhoto 7. iPhoto 7 will continue to work with that theme but if you switch to another to see what it looks like you can't go back. Another approach is to make a copy of the book in iPhoto 6 for backup just in case, select it and type Command-D.
It apperars that the new large hardcover books have printed dust jackets with the cover photo instead of the photo on the hard cover.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

i'm looking for the themes on the imove....? what happen to them? are they still here....if not how can I keep my can I go back to imove 6 ? I'm confused

    All,
Make sure the iMovie teams hears what you have to say about iMovie 08, or iMovie HD will shelved with no upgrades in the future.
