What happened to my library?  HELP!!!!!!!

Yesterday my iTunes was working fine. Today, when I try to play a song the exclamation point pops up next to it and it wants me to locate the song on my computer. I upgraded to 7.1.1 and now every song, all 3627 of them have that icon next to them. Even the CD's that I imported over a year ago have the logo. I got a new computer running Vista Premium about two or three weeks ago, but iTunes has been running fine until today. How do I fix this? Please help me! Thanks.

A handful of people report this issue.  Not enough for anybody to actual post a complete scenario which might help anybody figure out why, and it is unlikely it is anything Apple could resolve since it clearly isn't happening to all iTunes users.  Your best recourse it to always maintain an up-to-date backup of your computer so it is relatively painless restoring your iTunes library.

The help system has been changed again. If you are online the Help menu takes you to the Adobe Community Help Center (link to help is on the right), otherwise it loads a local copy from your computer.
You can use the PDF copy of the manual on your installation discs or download it from the Community Help Center.

Any time you sync an iphone/ipod touch/ipad to a new computer, then the current content will be erased and replaced with content form the new computer.  You need to copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

In the Customize window, is there an icon with a label under it saying "Download Helper"? If so, drag it to the toolbar. Many extensions/add-ons place their icons in the Customize window and the user must put them on the toolbar. If the extension you refer to is this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006/ , be sure your options are set: Tools > Add-ons > Extensions, click Download Helper, click Options, on the DH Preferences window, click General, click Appearance tab.

Restore your library from a recent / current backup.  If you've failed to maintain a backup of data you obviously regard as valuable, see turingtest2's user tip on Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

  • Quicktime Deleted! What happens to my library?

I was cleaning up my computer drive and I forgot that I needed QuickTime to run iTunes. Now when I upload iTunes it prompts me to reinstall it. If I do so, what happens to my entire library? I can't resave my library because without QuickTime it won't even let me access any part of iTunes.
If I simply reinstall QuickTime will this help me with my problem?
Or should I just reinstall iTunes all together, but what would happen to my iTunes library? After a while I forgot to copy the songs I downloaded into the separate My Music folder and just put 'em right into the iTunes one.
Thank you so much to all who reply!!

To make matters worse, the Previous iTunes Library is empty...why isnt there a Sync tab that I can just click it and have my library return??? If there is, I dont see one.  Does anyone have any help they can give me? Its been a long time since Ive used iTunes, up until the last 6 months, and I havent used it for anything other than my library and seeing what the top songs are so if there are new features, I dont know what they are.

  • What Happened to my RoboHelp Help?

This is RH5. I haven't used it for maybe a month or so, and
today, while I was trying to display online help, it simply
wouldn't display. I'm assuming this has something to do with the
Windows updates that are automatically applied to my computer while
I'm home sleeping, but I don't know what to do to get the help
    back.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
    Thanks.

    Hi Carol
Try clicking Tools > Options > General tab and placing

  • What happened to the online help pages???

I am failing miserably to find any online help pages for LabVIEW functions, they seem to have disappeared completely.
For example, if I search the site for "flatten to string", I get nothing (see image), even after selecting the help section on the left. I have tried many other LabVIEW function names ("write to spreadsheet file", "index array", "boolean to (0,1)",  and it simply does not work anymore. I never had problems in the past.
This is a problem, because if I point out a function here in the forum, I usually link to the online help for clarity.
What changed? In the past, the correct entry was always near the top of the list.

While the search now works, the results are still slightly out of order, for example the LabVIEW 2011 help page is currently always on top, with the 2012 page second.
I would prefer if they were always sorted, newest first.
Here's a typical result. The first two entries should be swapped.

  • What happened to the Library folder?

I did an upgrade to Lion this past weekend. Everything seems to work fine except the Library folder is not present. I clicked on two files from an email message and they showed up in the Mail Downloads folder, but I cannot navigate to that folder. All I have  as folders under "My Name" are: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, hob [?], Movies, Music,  Pictures. Public, Sites. Nothing else. Can someone enlighten me on where the Library folder might be?
    Thanks!

  • HT6378 what happens to photo library photos when iphone is full

So, I want to add photos to my icloud library from another device. 159GB worth to be exact. If I use airdrop my ipad will fill up adn if I delete the photos from it it will delete them from the photo library, correct? So how do I do it. I know I can upload photos through clooud.beta but ti doesn't retain the image data (location, date)?

If I merge libraries and then back the merged libraries up onto an external drive or DVD, do I just back up the libraries themselves, or do I also back up the original files?
If you're running a Managed Library, then backing up the Library also backs up the original files.
I ask because my HDD is getting pretty full. I want to reduce the amount of stuff on it, and the iPhoto libraries are the biggest single consumer of space at the moment (Nearly 100GB).
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards
    TD
P.s. If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • What happened to my Download Helper Icon?

Ever since I updated FF to 3.6.8, I no longer see the icon for the Download Helper add-on. How do I get it back? I've tried customizing the toolbar, but add-ons are not presented as one of the options.
Videos play just fine - have Shockwave Version: 10.1.82.76 installed. But I can't download Flash videos from any site now because the Download Helper icon is never presented when I start playing a video.

  • What happens to the library during uninstall?

I keep getting a message to uninstall and reinstall itunes to fix a problem I'm having. Do I lose my music library if I do this or is my music still there when I reinstall?

Uninstalling the actual iTunes program doesn't touch your iTunes library or music folder, however it's always advisable to have a backup of your library and music files anytime you have to make changes to your system just in case something goes wrong. Have a look at these pages for advice:

  • From 7.7 to 7.7.1  - what happens?

Time to upgrade to 7.7.1 since it sounds like the bugs in 7.7 are fixed.
In the recent past (since I've only used iTunes recently) I've done upgrades with Software Upgrade. I have now learned it's better to do upgrades/updates through downloading from the Apple site.
If I get 7.7.1 as a download from the Apple site and then install it on my G4, what happens to my library? What happens to 7.7 (is it overwritten or do I have two iTunes)?
    Mrs H

    Mi Mrs H (and mwn)!
So this is where you go and hide!
Found this thread by accident while cruisin' the iTunes forum (which I rarely do) to glean some experiences of others before deciding whether or not to upgrade iTunes from 7.6.1.
7.7.1 no longer how shows in Software Update, only 8, so I thought 'do I or don't I?'
So, happily ignoring the various comments about errors, bugs, gremlins, download difficulties etc, I decided to UPGRADE!
    Here is what I did:
First I backed up my iTunes Library. As later comments will show, that was a waste of three DVDs, but at least I now have a backup!
Repaired permissions. Closed all applications. Removed the iTunes icon from the Dock. Downloaded iTunes 8 from the Apple Download Page. Closed Safari. Read the read-me file that came with the installer. Went and had another coffee and cigarette in the garden.
Came back, marvelling that it wasn't raining, and installed iTunes 8. Repaired permissions - and there were a few repairs this time. Slightly surprised that the installer didn't ask for a restart, so I gave my iMac one anyway. Slightly longer bootup than usual, a good sign BTW that something is being reset and/or properly installed.
Opened iTunes 8 with trembling mouse-click.
    EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD!
My Library and playlists were exactly as I had left them. The Store opened as it should first time. In fact everything was so 'normal' that I had to check if I actually was running iTunes 8! Replaced the icon in the Dock. Made sure Genius wasn't operating - that's for later!
Have Annie Lennox blaring out as I type this.
Life is good - I can recommend iTunes 8!
    Keep those feet tapping, kids!
    Klaus
