I could easily keep up to date with questions posted and subscribe to interesting discussions. Now I have no idea how to find my own questions and see any updates.

What happened to the stuff in the trashcan when iMovie crashed?

I was editing my movie last night and had just finished my final cuts when iMovie crashed and closed. Right before this happened I had about 8 GB worth of material in the iMovie trashcan. I restarted iMovie and found that my clips were still on the storyline, but without any of the edits I had made before the crash, and that the iMovie trashcan was empty. The 8 GB that had been in the trashcan though, were never freed up. What happened to those 8 GB????????

It's also possible you were misled a bit by the way iMovie calculates the size of the iMovie Trash.
If your project has a large iMovie video clip (a clip with a large Media file) and you discard even a small portion of that clip, iMovie describes the clip in the Trash has being the same size as its Media file. The result is that the size of the Trash often SIGNIFICANTLY overstated.
In fact, emptying the iMovie Trash might not recover any disk space at all. Because of iMovie's non-destructive editing feature, if any OTHER clip relies on the discarded clip's Media file, the entire file will be preserved. Emptying the iMovie Trash will discard the clip on the Timeline, but not discard any Media files, where all the big stuff is.
So I wouldn't pay too much attention to the Trash size reported by iMovie. It tells you the maximum possible disk space that MIGHT be recovered. But it may be far, far less.

Newest Update ! What Happened to MY Stuff?

The latest AE update reset most but not all my(so it was selective and intentional by Adobe) time consuming user preferences to default and I thought the cloud idea was to safeguard my previous preferences across systems and upgrades., which where also wiped. What happened?

Uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes should not affect your library, but you should backup anyway.
Protected content can only be played with iTunes. The rest of your media will play in suitable programs such as Windows Media Player, MediaMonkey, QuickTime (unless you remove that too), VLC, etc.

What happened with Vi(m)?

Today i made a 'pacman -Syu', cause the last time i did this was 3 month before.
So it also updates Vim... i could not manage to edit to edit a file yet.
There's simply no 'insert mode' when pressing 'i' anymore and navigating with arrowcursors ends up with "AADDAAA" in my textfile. Everything is messed up, iam completely incapable to work with that!
Every try to edit a file ends with "q!", so what the hell happened? I want to have my old vim behaviour
I also noticed that Distros like Ubuntu and Debian in newer Versions also change to this vim-shitty thing, propably this is a new ultimate feature of vim, but iam too stupid to come clear with that.
Please help ^^

if it was vim that you were using... same thing here. Aftery y -Syu, vim got pretty wrecked... Syntax highlighting was gone, mouse didn't work and a few other issues.

I serached the forums looking for soulution (well, I was pretty much sure what happened), which I found here:
After the vim upgrade I lost syntax color highlighting (7.2.245-1)
I noticed myself, some config files for vim were changed. Default /etc/vimrc sourced archlinux.vim, which is out of reach - vim's runtime dir is /usr/share/vim/vim72 and the archlinux.vim file is in /usr/share/vim/vimfiles. Maybe I'm missing something, but I reverted /etc/vimrc to old one from thread above and vim is like it used to be (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 82#p619382).

Executing Sql - whats happening on the server

Hi, I am using Oracle 8.17 on a AIX box.
When i run queries that have to do full table scans of a large table it virtually cripples my system. (nmon shows lots of disk activity / paging) .
Even when running
Select count(col1) from large_tab;
Im trying to understand whats happening behind the scenes here. Why is there lots of paging. what is oracle doing?
Our database is set to rule based optimiser as the vendor providing the software does not allow for use of cost base optimizer / or compute statistics. :-0 :-(
Why would this be do you think?

One simple basic setting for minfree and maxfree is to calculate a starting point as follows:
" minfree = ( 120 * # of CPUs )
" maxfree to ( ( maxpageahead * # of CPUs ) + minfree )

hello...
i have white-spot for the third time now. my powerbook is currently at apple repair center. i still have apple-care on it. what happens if i get whitespot again? i guess it will happen again cause all repairs failed jet. i am gonna have the fourth display after that repair and i guess it will fail as the other ones.
my apple-dealer told me, apple will offer me a new book after 3 failed repairapproaches.
did anybody have this situation and what kind of machine will i get? the same as i bought or a new, actual one?

I'm also interested in this answer. My daughter's PB has had the deadly grey screen for the third time! AppleCare said "it's no problem because it's less than a year old" (what kind of answer is that!!). What happens the next time her screen goes grey? Do they replace the PB, extend her warranty, or whatever????

Nobody here can tell you why something like that happens in the iBookstore. Presumably there is some issue between Apple and the publisher. You might try getting what you want from one of the other stores which have free ereaders, like Kindel, Nook, Kobo, Googlebooks, Sony.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

I had about 17 tabs open on my browser. I clicked a link to open another one and when the tab opened the other tabs disappeared. What happened here?

I had 17 tabs open. When I clicked a link to open a new tab all the other tabs disappeared. I thought a new window had been opened instead, but this is not the case there is only one window open on my mozilla browser. If I try to close the window I get a message that says there are 26 tabs opened, I opened 9 more tabs. Can anybody tell me what is going on here or how I might figure this out?
Also, when I close a tab and try to reopen the tab using the right click menu, the 'undo closed tab' menu is disabled. What happened here? Can anybody tell me how to re-enable it?

I've seen some occasional glitches with windows losing the toolbar area, but not one that disturbing.
If you click and drag down on the 18th tab enough to tear it off into a new window (and possibly the same for the other newer tabs you opened), can you get the 17 tabs to re-appear in the first window? If not, I'm not sure there is a way to mend the window. If it's NOT a private browsing session, you might have to use Firefox > Exit (or File > Exit) and restore your session to get a working window. That won't work with a private window...
As a backstop, you might also right-click a tab in the window > Bookmark All Tabs before ending your session. (Because session cookies and other transient data are not preserved when you reload bookmarks, this isn't as effective as restoring a session. On the other hand, bookmark storage is less fragile than session data storage.)
Regarding Undo Close Tab, are the closed tabs listed on the History menu under Recently Closed Tabs? If so, that context menu item definitely should be enabled.

It is still there. Maybe it says apply now, not sure, but it is still there.

I don't want icloud either, because I don't want all my personal info on a server. I want to keep my personal information in my system. Am I making any sense? Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.

You should transfer all purchases to your computer. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You can redownload some purchases in some countries:
