What Happened to Separating Left & Right Channels

Hey, in Audition 1.5 they had a "primitive" feature that if I wanted to process ONLY the Left, or ONLY the Right ch.s by simply putting the cursor on the upper or lower half of the wave form respectively.  Worked GREAT!  So, PLEASE would one of the Audition geeks tell me what IDIOT made the decision to do away with that feature?  If you replaced it with another cute geeky trick would you please divulge it.  I looked in the manual and it was nowhere to be found.

You can enable the Audition 3 style default behavior under Preferences > General > Allow Context-Sensitive Editing.  This turns on the drag high or low to select that particular channel.
When a selection is made across both channels, you may also press the up/down arrows to change which channel is isolated.  SHIFT+CTRL/CMD+L/R will also quickly enable or disable a channel.  (There are additional shortcuts to address 5.1 files.)
And as Steve mentions, the [L] and [R] buttons (or whatever channel labels apply to the file you have open) in the vertical ruler to the right of the waveform may be clicked on and off to toggle the selected status.

  • Line In Recording Left/Right Channell

I hav an XFi-Titanium. I select the "Audio Record Mode". Then I record something with a Keyboard that's only on the Right-Channel. While I record something I hear nothing. When I stop the recording and play it afterwards, I hear the sound I recorded and its ony Right Channel like I wanted it to be. Line In is switched on and when I put the intrument on both channels I hear Music li've? while playing on the Instrument. If I put the Intrument on the Right Channel I hear nothing while playing li've. Only after recording I hear what I played on the Right Channel. My Question is why I don't hear the Right Channel while playing li've (When the Instrument only outputs a Right Channel sound) and when I record the same thing and then push play on the record programm I hear the right channel. So if I want to edit a multiple track song and for example put a Piano on the right channel I can't hear anything while playing on the Keyboard. I have to record it to hear what I played. So the right channel doesn't work li've. If I switch the Piano Sound to the Left Channel it has the same effect as putting the Piano Sound on both Channels. (I hear the Piano out of both Speakers)
Any Ideas why this isn't working li've, only working after recording?

)Re: Line In Recording Left/Right ChannelleI use Adobe Audition. I played arround with my settings and found out that to mute the right channnel or unmute it does not effect the li've-playback of line in. Only the left Channel (mute / unmute) has an effect. So if I put an Instrument on both channels, both channels go through the left channel while playing. If I put an Instrument only on the rigt Channel I hear nothing. If I put an Instrument only on the Left Channel I can hear it. So for li'veplayback only the left channel works. Recording uses two channels. I found out in the Audio-Creation Console of the Xfi- Titanium that, looking at the Playback Volume Meter, only the left channel shows something, while? the Record Volume Meter shows something on both channels. It seems that the Soundcard handles realtime-playback of line in and recording of line in different. Realtime - playback of line in seems to be mono while line in recording seems to be Stereo. Is there maybe a switch or a setting to get realtime playback of line in to stereo? Is it a driver problem and realtime Stereo isn't supported by line in on the X-fi?

  • Ipad Crosstalk - Left/Right channel separation bad when loud

Using an IPAD 2 with iOS6 and Garage band I find that if I pan all the way to the righ (or left) that I can still hear some of the sound in the other ear.  Is this cross talk due to the amplifier, is there anything that can be done about it?
I have tried different headsets and professional grade wires/headsets and it still happens so I think it is due to the ipad.
I have tried different software packages aside from garage band and it still happens.
It only happens at loud volumes and in this situation if you leave both headsets in your ears you can't tell there is a channel bleed, but if you take out the loud one you can still hear it in the non-test ear.
    Suggestions?  Solutions?
    Thanks.

WAIT. I've tried the Mono Audio setting and I think it sounds normal now. I used this video to check out how the left and right channels are doing. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTvJoYnpeRQ )
Without the Mono Audio setting, the left channel is clear but nothing at all with the right one. Once the setting is on, I can hear both channels correctly. Is it because the speaker of the iPad is only one or mono speaker, or will it sound stereo even if it has one speaker?

  • Left/Right Channel Bleed? Discrete Separation Possible?

I have a need to playback stereo music files with discrete L & R channels on both iTunes and iPod devices. When I output these files from ProTools, the left and right channels are discrete. However, when I play them back from iTunes, listening to just the left or right channels alone reveals bleed from between the channels, which is unacceptable. The only work-around I have fund is to pull out an old portable CD player and hook it directly to the amp. The same CD in iTunes simply does not produce discrete tracks out of the Mac or once converted to MP3s, the iPod.
Is there some setting that must be adjusted to prevent this cross-over bleed in iTunes and in particular, the iPod? Or are these devices incapable of producing discrete L/R channel separation?

  • Imported track...switching left/right channels

I have a track imported to GarageBand, and i have two questions. I don't know if either can be done through GB, but i'll give it a shot...
    1. Can i switch the left and right channel, so that what was originally sent to the left channel will be on the right instead, and vice versa?
    2. If i have a stereo spread that is too wide, can i move the spread closer to the center? I don't want complete mono, but i do want a tighter stereo spread that moves the instruments closer to the center.
Mind you, this is not a track i recorded on my own. It was an imported track from iTunes, so i can't go into the song, and separate individual recording tracks. The only thing i have to work with is the right/left channels in the song.
    thanks very much.
    paul

i THINK i know what you mean... i'll give that a shot and see if it works. It seems to make sense, so we'll see! Thanks for your advice...much appreciated.

  • Left & Right Channels Reversed

I recently imported a classical CD to my iMac, using iTunes 8.0.2. The left and right channels of the imported files were reversed. I proved this by playing the original CD, in which they are not reversed though they are in the iTunes file - whether played on the iPod or directly.
I have noticed a similar thing sometimes upon downloading music files from the Internet, but it only happens now & then.
Is there a reason for this? Is there anything I can do to correct it?

Put the left speaker on the right side and the right side speaker on the left?

  • Playing different sound, left right channel

    Hi,
Basically what I'm trying to do is to play 2 different sound files (.wav) in stereo, but through different channels.
sound file A - left sound channel
sound file B - right sound channel
These files should be playing at the same time.
If this is not possible, is it possible with 2 soundcards?

  • Left /right Channel balance

Not a specific Logic question as such, more a general one on sound balance. Have been using a pair of Klipsch speakers for about a year now and have started noticing a decided swing of volume to the left hand channel when everything is set to centre like drums etc. Tried swinging a drum snare to the left and right and the right hand channel is just so much quieter to the point of al most losing the snare ! Tried it on my headphones and its the same. Could my mac be giving a hiccup?

    Hi,
You might do well in calibrating your audio outputs.
    Here's a quickie:
    1. Turn OFF your speaker system. Failure to do so will not only blow them up, it might get you evicted...or thrown out from your parent's...or the neighbor going after you with a shotgun, you get the picture. I won't be held responsible if you skip this step, and become deaf as a result.
    2. Open a blank Logic song, and make 1 track. Insert a tone generator plug-in,and set it to 0dB (the maximum output level). Make sure the pan is set to centered.
    3. check your audio device's output level meters. they should MATCH. If not, there is an issue with your audio device. consult the mfr to get this fixed ASAP. If this step is ok, move on to no.4.
    4. If you have a mixer after your audio device, look at the INPUT GAIN on the channels that your main outputs from your audio device are fed into. Put the left channel into SOLO, and calibrate the input gain so it clips, and tehn back it off just slightly, until no clipping occurs. Do the same for the right channel.
    5. Set the OUTPUT of the mixer faders to 0, and pan each channel hard left and hard right, respectively (ch1 left, ch2 right, etc.)
    6. Look at the mixer's OUTPUT meters. Do they match? If they do NOT match, you need to contact the mfr of the mixer, and have this fixed ASAP/ If they DO match, then proceed to step 7.
    7. Look at the amplifier that your speakers are hooked up to : does it have an INPUT gain knob? If it does, then you can calibrate your speaker amplifier. If it does not, REPLACE this speaker amp with one that DOES have input gain knobs. If it does have input knobs, you now can calibrate the speaker levels. Go to step 8.
    8. With a good SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter, place the meter on a mic stand or other sturdy device, and place it in your mix position, pointing towards the exact middle of your speaker spread (exactly between the speakers). Turn the meter on, and set it to read 80dB sensitivity.
    9. Set your mixer's monitoring output (the one that turns the output up and down to your speakers) SLOWLY... until you get 80 dB on your meter.
    10. MUTE the right speaker output. You can do this on your mixer, by muting the left channel. then turn up the monitoring level up until you get the same 80dB. What is the level difference? Note this.
    11. MUTE the left channel, and turn on the right channel. turn up / down the monitorin levle until you reach 80dB. What is the difference? not this too.
    12. On the speaker gain knobs, notice where they are BEFORE you calibrate the speaker amplifiers.
    13. Put your monitor level back to about 10 am position. This one is the one on the mixer. NOt the one on the speaker amp!!!
    14. While still on the RIGHT channel only playback, notice where the level meter is now. Adjust the RIGHT speaker input so that it reads 80dB upon playback at the 10am position on the mixer monitoring knob.
    15. MUTE the Right playback, and turn on the Left channel playback. notice where the level meter is, and adjust the LEFT speaker input until you get the 80dB.
    16. Now, turn on BOTH Left and Right channels, and it should be louder than each channel separate.
    17. Adjust the monitor level knob on your mixer until you reach 80dB. MARK THIS SPOT.
You now have a calibrated listening system.
    Enjoy

  • Something happened to my left/right swiping

In my trackpad gesture settings I've got left/right swiping between desktop/dashboard/full-screen apps set to 3-finger swiping. That works fine. The problem is that for some reason the same thing is happening with 4-finger swiping as well. 4-finger left/right swiping WAS allowing me to use backward/forward functionality (i.e. in Firefox), but now 3 and 4 fingers does the same thing. I was playing around with the options in the gesture settings earlier today, but everything is configured in the trackpad gestures control panel the way I would like it. I am not sure what happened here.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

That did help. At least I got forward/backward swiping back.
That being said, forward/backwards swiping is now done with 3 fingers and swiping between full screen apps is with 4 fingers. The part that is weird is that I used to be able to, in Lion as when it was first installed, swipe between full screen apps with 3 fingers and standard foward/backwards with 4 fingers. It's just odd that even if I select full screen app switching with 3 fingers, it continues to do it with 4 fingers as well. It's almost like some configuration setting somewhere is stuck and there's no way to reverse it again.
For the time being at least I have it working again per your tip, but I'd still like to find out what's going on at the root of the issue.

  • Left / Right Channel Audio mixing?

How do I mix the audio between the left and right audio channel?
I have a bunch of tape imported, but the audio is only in the left channel, so I need to either balance the audio, or duplicate the audio in the right channel... thanks in advance!

You should be able to do this by 'Exporting' your movie to GarageBand, and just making the one-channel audio the same on both channels.
Alternatively, if you want to do extensive tweaking manually, do the following:
0 - Download an audio editor such as 'Audacity'.
1 - In iMovie, select the video clip(s) which you want to 'repair', and then use 'Extract audio' to separate the audio from the video.
2 - Close iMovie, and use the usual Finder to locate your movie project, then Ctrl-click (or right-click) on the name of the project and choose "Show Package Contents".
3 - Look in the 'Media' file which then appears, and you'll find all your audio clips. Copy them to your Desktop.
4 - Start 'Audacity' and use File and Open to open the audio files, one by one, which are on your Desktop. Use these hints (intended for 'Sound Studio, but they work with 'Audacity', too, so click on 'Start Slideshow') to copy and paste one channel onto the other, then Save your work.
5 - Take those newly amended files on your Desktop, and copy them back into the 'Media' folder within your project (see 2 and 3, above).
6 - Reopen iMovie; the audio will now play correctly.

  • ITunes: Left/Right Channel

    ITunes question: right/left channels
I play guitar and bass and have an assortment of instructional CDs. Many of these CDs are set up with the full band on one channel and the featured instrument on the other. The idea being that you can turn off the part that you're learning in order to play along with the rest of the recording.
Other music players I've used in the past have had the option of playing one channel or the other through both speakers. I have yet to find this feature in iTunes. Can the iTunes player do this, if so, how, and if not, can anyone recommend a good player that can?
    Thanks!

The freeware program Audacity will let you listen to just the left or right channels, or any mix in between. Audacity is an audio file editor, not just a media player. If you want to listen to AAC or Protected AAC files, Audacity won't work. You would have to convert them to mp3 files first. Besides mp3s, Audacity also supports wav, aiff, and oog vorbis formats. You would open the file from the cd in Audacity. You could then set the cursor as a starting play point of a passage if you want to get down. Just choose Don't Save when you quit.

  • IRadio - what happened to sports and talk channels?

I listened to radion stations everyday via iTunes and just updated to 11.1 and they are all gone!  Will these be added later?  Wish I could go back to what I had.

So I guess no one has a clue to what happened to actual radio stations?  Seems odd.  iRadio doesn't appear to be a real radio at all - it's just streaming music - and pretty narrowly focused at that.
The real readio stations disappeared with the "upgrade."  Usually things get better with upgrades.

  • What happened to the Music Choice Channels?

me too.  BOOO Toooo!!  And I did read the instructions at the bottom of the screen and nothing works except to turn everything off and then back on to get out of the stingray site.

    Hello,

Is this adding cost to U-verse 300 programming?  If so, how do I change it?
    Thank to all who answer!

U-verse Elite is an internet speed program which allows downloads up to 6 mbps. I am not sure what you are referring to when you are talking about downloading channels. I see Stingray right now on television. I assume you are talking about your computer or smart phone. Since I am not a techie, I will let one of the other forum members answer your question.
As far as Stingray, itself, I am find it difficult to navigate. Music Choice was easy. With Stingray, you cannot just change channels in order to watch or listen to it. You have to hit "OK" on your remote when you get to the channel. Even then, it takes a while to actually get the channel while you wait for the circle to stop circling.
Changing music channels is all done with the "OK", the left and right arrow buttons, and the up and down arrows. You sort of have to experiment around to get the hang of it. I still cannot figure out how to get out of Stingray other than turning off U-Verse and then turning it back on. I tried the "Back" button on the remote and the up and down channel button. Neither worked.
It really does not matter to me at this point that Stingray is more complicated than Music Choice. I do not have U-verse for music, I have it for television and internet.
Just press Exit to TV to exit to the 51xx channel, like it says at the bottom as I'm seeing now.  You're actually going into the Stingray app when you choose a channel.
You can get the app menu like the app by pressing the Back button, to choose to go to another channel.
Really pretty simple to navigate and they put instructions at the bottom of the screen.

  • What happens when I ctrl+right click on a tab header? What does "(*)" mean?

When I ctrl+right click on a tab header, there appears "(*)" before the title of the tab header. I don't see any change in the behavior or properties of the header. What's happend? What does it mean?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Ctrl+Right click on tab header

That is not a built-in feature of Firefox, but is part of the Tab Mix plus add-on.
What it means is the tab has been selected for merging.
To see what it does have 2 Firefox windows open, in one of them open several tabs then select a few of them so that they have "(*)" displayed in the tab. Now use the Tab Mix Plus merge window option, the selected tabs will be merged with the other Firefox window, and the unselected tabs will just be closed.
