What happened to the Disk Activity indicator?
I'm a computer professional, and have had at least six Toshiba laptops in the past 15 years.I have always bought Toshiba for myself and reccomend them to my clients.
I noticed an important ommission in the most recent machine purchased for my own use. It's a Satellite S855, and it has no disk activity light.
Whose idea was it to omit this tiny, inexpensive and most useful item? It can't have been omitted because of cost! In a production run how much is saved per unit by omitting this device, five cents? I doubt that it even costs that much. What ever the price, I'd gladly pay the additional cost for something so useful to observing how the computer is running and whether it may be busy, overwhelmed or just frozen.
Please talk to the design group and tell them that we want our disk led back!

Thought I'd add that a folder on the desktop with the following name will contain all applications (including metro apps). AnyName might be Applications.
AnyName.{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1}
And a folder with this name will contain all the settings in Control Panel. AnyName might be MasterControl. Some name it GodMode.

What happened to the file activity window indicator?
In Dreamweaver CS5 and earlier versions when I would upload my files to my web server the file activity window would show the progress as the bits uploaded. Now in CS6 the bits aren't showing... only the overall progress. This is a drag when I'm uploading a large file and can't monitor the progress. The progress bar doesn't really show you as a large file is uploading. Is this a new change or can it be restored to how it use to be somehow?

Seems the activity window has in fact changed in CS6. To see the progress you hold your cursor over the file you are transferring.

my mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?
Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available. -
What happens when the iPhone needs an activation and it doesn't respond? Then it asks me to restore it but due to an unknown error (-1) the iPhone can't be restored.
Thank you for your response. However, I have done that plenty of times and each time I try to restore my phone, it extracts the software and then when it says restoring with the loading bar, an error message comes up saying an unknown error has occurred.

Question: As I send an email, the mail activity indicator is showing that more than one email is being sent! Last time it was 5 even though I was only sending one and there were no other emails in the out box! What's going on here I ponder?

Executing Sql - whats happening on the server
Hi, I am using Oracle 8.17 on a AIX box.
When i run queries that have to do full table scans of a large table it virtually cripples my system. (nmon shows lots of disk activity / paging) .
Even when running
Select count(col1) from large_tab;
Im trying to understand whats happening behind the scenes here. Why is there lots of paging. what is oracle doing?
Our database is set to rule based optimiser as the vendor providing the software does not allow for use of cost base optimizer / or compute statistics. :-0 :-(

I switched phones for the time being. What happens to the stolen one? will it still work with the Find my iphone app? Or will is not work since is is not activated? It was previously suspended until I switched to an old phone. Is this phone still suspended or was it the account that was suspended?

I may be wrong, but TM wont let you select something unavailable for back up while you're using the "exclude" preference. Unavailable items are grayed out.
Only TM volumes and volumes not formatted OSX Extended are shown that way.
You do have to click show invisible items but the .trash file can be manually selected for exclusion. That seems a fair indicator that by default TM is backing up your trash.

What happens when the Time Machine drive is full?
I'm on my second iMac. My first one (G5, 1984) died, and I replaced it early 2010 with an Intel mac. The transition when exceedingly well largely due to Time Machine. I just hooked the Time Machine drive to the new system, and I was soon back up running!
My home folder has 70GB of data. The Macintosh drive has 105GB of data and 395GB free. The Time Machine drive has 220GB used and 30GB free.
1. What happens when the Time Machine drive is full?
2. Do I have control over what backups get deleted?
3. If lightning strikes twice, will I still be able to restore my Intel mac like my G5 mac, even if backups get deleted?
4. Is there anyway to control what backups/backup files get deleted?
5. Any other thoughts?

Do you mean all of them? The entire Backups.backupdb folder?
That's a large mess. First, even a normal delete will take a very long time, as there are probably hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of files. Your best bet by far is to simply erase them with Disk Utility -- that will only take a few moments. If your TM drive has a single partition, see #1 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]. If there are other partition(s) on the drive, see #2 there.
If not, and you only deleted some of the folders, you have a different, worse problem. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*Never move, change, or delete anything in your backups via the Finder or Terminal.+*
You shouldn't have to delete backups at all, since Time Machine will do that automatically when the disk/partition gets full. But you can do it without harm via Time Machine. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
A normal delete will take a very long time, as there are probably tens or hundreds of thousands of items, each of which must be individually deleted. A secure delete will take much, much longer, as each deleted file must be overwritten with zeros. -
What happened to the standalone A.pack prog?
what happened to the stand alone A.pack for creating AC3 files, it seems to have gone when I upgraded to FInal Cut Studio yesterday???

I too was dismayed to find A.pack gone. I like the stand-alone version. There was nothing wrong with it. If you prefer not to use the integrated AC3 processor, install A.pack by inserting your old DSP disk and choosing custom install, selecting only A.pack from the options.

After upgrading what happens to the apps on my 3G?
I just received my iPhone 4 and put my backup from my iPhone 3G on. It works fine, and there is no more AT&T service on my iPhone 3G. I intend to use the 3G as an iPod Touch. I understand the SIM card needs to stay in the phone for this, even though it is not activated with AT&T.
What happens to the apps that are still on my 3G? They are still working. I assume they will stay there until I need to sync. Then I will have to set up a new iTunes account, under a unique computer user name, for the 3G and buy the apps all over again for the 3G.Nope, the apps stay there until you delete them.
I currently sync 2 iPhones and 2 iPod Touch units all to one iTunes store account, and per the Apple licensing, they all can run apps I have purchased. I had a similar question as you when I first started using multiple devices, so I sent an email to the app author for the app I wanted most to do this with. His response was that this is Apple's terms, so if I didn't want to purchase a second license to use his app on a second device, then I didn't need to (but he wouldn't stop me if I wanted to either). In the end, I found this app author to be very dedicated to his app, and very responsive to my comments/requests, so I did purchase a second copy of his app (yes, I had my wife create an iTunes account and purchase it under her account). -

If you're running a Managed Library, then backing up the Library also backs up the original files.
I ask because my HDD is getting pretty full. I want to reduce the amount of stuff on it, and the iPhoto libraries are the biggest single consumer of space at the moment (Nearly 100GB).
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

P.s. If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. -
