What happened to the Startup Disk icon?

I've only had my MacBook Pro for about two weeks (and already seem to have screwed things up). The last couple of day I've notices that my System Preferences > Startup Disk has gone from the harddrive icon to this icon:
http://symtym.com/rsc/startupdisk.jpg
Any suggestions as what caused this and what to do to fix it? TIA

A lot of people have had this strange light switch icon replace normal ones. See this thread:

Removing the preference files recommended by Ferd seems to fix it.

  • Just upgraded to 5 from 3 - what happened to the page select icon? Can't find it in customize toolbars.

Used to be you could select which page you wished to go back or forward to from the arrow icons on the navigation toolbar. The history menu item only shows 10 sites without having to open history for today. What happened? Is there another icon or a new plug in for this functionality? I used it all the time.

''what happened to the page select icon (Back/Forward)''
The back/forward buttons have been moved to right-hand side of the navigation bar and the drop-down was removed. User right-click or hold click for one second to see the tab history. This is item #5 in my list.
The History menu also has "Open Previous session" and "Open closed windows",
to see more history use the History sidebar ("Ctrl+H") or the History Library List ("Ctrl+Shift+H") and sort or view by "Last visited".

What happened to the download helper icon, ie: three tumbling balls.

In the Customize window, is there an icon with a label under it saying "Download Helper"? If so, drag it to the toolbar. Many extensions/add-ons place their icons in the Customize window and the user must put them on the toolbar. If the extension you refer to is this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006/ , be sure your options are set: Tools > Add-ons > Extensions, click Download Helper, click Options, on the DH Preferences window, click General, click Appearance tab.

  • What happened to the recently purchased icon on the left side of the playlist?  I used to could purchase songs from one of my computers and then put them on the second authorized computer by selecting recently purchased.  Is there another way?

What happened to the recently purchased icon on the left side of the playlist?  I used to could purchase songs from one of my computers and then put them on the second authorized computer by selecting recently purchased.  Is there another way?

Well in order to keep all the ratings, playcounts ect ect of songs in iTUnes, place the songs back into there original folders/places on the "Old harddrive" by cutting (Not copying) them from the new Harddrive. Now iTunes should report the songs has being there and have ! marks beside the imported folder from your external Harddrive.
Now you will delet the dead/broken links (Or missing music from the new drive)in iTUnes. Goto Ottos site for a script that will remove dead links and other things here
Just download, unzip, and run the program.
    http://ottodestruct.com/iTunes/QuickScripts.zip
Now with everything in place and the dead links removed you will either consolidate the library or set it to copy to another Folder. If you consolidate it moves ALL your music listed in iTunes to the "iTunes Music" folder and can not be reversed. If you set it to copy, it will just copy music from its current folder to the iTunes music folder. You will have to pick the best option for you but consolidating will work best if your trying to free up space. To consolidate goto "Advanced" and select "Consolidate Library". To copy goto Edit>preferenses>Advanced tab>general sub tab and check "Copy FIles to iTunes music Folder when added to library". THis location is also where you will change the location of iTunes Music folder from your old harddrive to the new one by hitting the "Change" button above the reset button

  • What happened to the reload page icon?

What happened to the reload icon that used to appear at the upper left of the screen? Doing a right mouse click and then clicking on the drop down menu is very cumbersome. I need to refresh screens very often to get current real time activity. How can I restore this icon?

The screen reload icon is usually in the address bar (the big white bar at the top of your screen with http:// or www. in it) at the right hand side. You can Also hit the F5 key, or just customize your toolbars to move the reload icon to wherever you want it.[[How do I customize the toolbars?#w_how-do-i-customize-or-rearrange-toolbar-items|How do I customize or rearrange toolbar items?]]

  • What happened to the red circle icon showing unread mail messages?

I have an iPhone 5, version 7.1.1. The Mail icon used to show me the number of unread messages I had with a white number in a red circle in the upper right hand corner of the icon. For some reason, it no longer does. Any thoughts on what might have happened or how I might be able to fix it?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • What happened to the name faces icon in iphoto 08?

I had to erase everything off my computer and re-install iphoto '08. When I did this, I no longer have faces or places in the library on the left hand side.  I also do not have the name (faces) icon on the bottom of the window.  What can I do to fix this?

what version of iPhoto are you running? There have been many fixes to web galleries and there still are some issues to be resolved - in versions before 7.1.2 web galleries were pretty flaky
7.1.3 still have some issues but many less
One suggestion is in the future make an album of the photos you want in the web gallery and do all changes there then publish that album as a web gallery - making changes to a published web gallery while it is updating (and you can not easily control this) still seems to cause problems

  • What happened to the Add Bookmark icon

  • What happened to the remote speaker icon?

My Airport Express has worked up until recently. It will play over my computer
speakers but not my stereo speakers. In the setup guide and online it instructs
to go to the "pop-up menu at the at the bottom of the ITunes window". THIS RECENTLY DISAPPEARED and I have no clue why.... There isn't icon or anything there to switch speakers. I've updated the
latest version of ITunes. The volume isn't turned down either and the set-up to
my stereo has not changed. The wireless connection is working I just can't find the icon to switch to it. Please help.

I currently have a older version of iTunes, but there should be only a slightly difference to what I say compare to your version of iTunes. First, go to iTunes preferences, then under Advance catalog, you should see a unchecked box with the description of "Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes." Check the box then should solve your problem. Hope this helped you.

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 4--what happened to the secure site icon at bottom of page?

I just upgraded from Firefox 3.6 to 4. There used to be a secure site icon at bottom right of secure pages. Clicking on the icon opened a window with all security info for that page. Now there is no icon. To get the same info I now have to click on the button in the address bar and then click again on the "more information" button. This is not intuitive and seems like a step backward. Is there a way to bring back the old secure site icon?

The padlock is no longer a part of Firefox; it can give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site. Familiarize yourself with the '''''Site Identity Button''''' in Firefox:
    *http://www.dria.org/wordpress/archives/2008/05/06/635/
You can install an add-on to show a padlock in the URL/Location/Address bar:

  • Time Machine with OSX Server; what happened to the free disk space?

    Hello all,
I am trying to do something that should be pretty simple. I have an iMac, with Mountain Lion and Server installed. My wife has a Mac Air. The goal was to get her to Time Machine backup through the wifi to my external hardrive. I think it is working, but here is the small catch. Last night, while getting it all going, it was saying "making buckup disk ready" through the night until now. Now it is actually doing the backup normally, i.e. I can see the data transferring. BUT, here is the question, in the mean time the external hardrive lost about 300gb of space which is the size of MY iMac backup. So I hope that when I turned on Time Machine it dosnt back up one time as my computer and another as a server. That may not make any sence at all.
Here is a screen shot of my external hardrive:
636.33 GB, before yesterday it was half that. But my wife's hardrive is 100 GB of Data.
Just a note, I had my hardrive wiped clean the other day before Mountain Lion was installed, and I have a "carbon copy" from before that on another hardrive. Can I delete the backup of MY machine and start over?
Thanks, I hope this is clear.
    Best,
    Justin

  • What happened to the Hard Drive icon?

Just booted a brand new MacBook Pro and went thru the initial set-up, but there is no "Hard Drive" or "Macintosh HD" folder on the desktop anymore.  Do I now need to click on the Finder every time I want into the hard drive?

Oh, yeah, Mountain Lion is so terribly shy of letting you see all its privates...
While you're munging up Finder's desktop Preferences, may also want to visit the Sidebar tab and set up what you want to see in there as well.

Well I found the Startup Disk icon okay but now I rebooted and cannot find it.
I looked in the control panel under "Performance and Maintenance" in the category view. And also in the Classic View it has disapeared as well.
What cna I do about this? I cannot figure out how to boot back into OSX?
    cheers,

Supposedly... holding the "x" key down when booting defaults to booting OSXS... never tried it... since I need a "9" key! LOL:-)

  • Invisible Startup Disk Icon on Desktop and Finder

Today suddenly I found that my Startup disk icon was gone from the desktop and from the Finder. I did some searching and found the following solution that may be useful for someone else:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4932292#post4932292
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

A few days after trying the solution in my previous post, I realized that the Startup disk icon was still missing from Devices in the Finder's sidebar.
So, following some advice from other forums, I went and deleted com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from homedirectory/library/preferences. Then did a control-option-click on Finder in the Dock and chose "relaunch".
So this completed the fix. Coincidentally this also fixed a "freeze" issue that I was having.
