What happened to "weighted optimization" in CS4

In Photoshop CS3 and earlier, weighted optimization of JPEGs could be achieved by using the "Use channel to modify quality setting" button just to the right of the Quality setting in the Save for Web and Devices dialog box. This option no longer appears in Photoshop CS4. Does anyone know what happened to it or what can be used in its place in CS4?

hey but what about the lots of users who find this functionality very cool & useful indeed?
Is there a work around (I mean a simple & practical one)? Is there a compensating 3rd party plug-in?

What Happened to Sample Templates in CS4?

In CS3, there were many examples of pages that were already complete... when you first bring up CS3, you select:
New...
More...
Page From Sample...
Starter Page (Theme)...
And then you could select from such items as Restaurants, Health and Nutrition, Personal Training... etc.
These seem to have disappeared in CS4. Is there another more robust location in Adobe that contains these samples? Starting with a blank page is so much more time-consuming.

You could look at the Templates at the Adobe Site - I've not used them,so can't vouch for how easy they are to use etc., but may be worth a look:

CS4 also has some CSS predefined templates as well:New>Blank Page>HTML> and choose the template from the Layout box.

What happened with TD BACKGROUND in CS4 ?

We used to have the TD Background textfield value in the properties even in CS3 ... but now I need to use it and I no find the way unless I write it in HTML... where is that issue now ?

It wasn't deprecated by Adobe, but by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) - nearly a decade ago. Deprecated in HTML 4.0 and HTML 4.01 Transitional in 1999, but already obsolete in HTML 4.01 Strict in 1999 and XHTML 1.01 in 2000.

What happened to the Adobe file dialog in CS4?

Am I missing something or is the adobe open file dialog gone in CS4? I loved the ability to assign favorite folders on the left margin since I have so many files and drilling down into folders is such a repetitive chore! What happened?
Also, don't know if anyone else has encountered this but it appears that since I installed CS4 master collection several of my most often used open type fonts are no longer recognized: Cronos Pro and Myriad Pro.

Yup, the "Adobe Dialog" seems to be gone, gone, gone ...
In terms of the fonts, where were those fonts installed? I also have full families of Cronos Pro and Myriad Pro installed on all my systems outside of the suite and have not encountered any problems is their use after installing the CS4 Master Collection. Are those same fonts still visible in the Windows Fonts Control Panel and accessible from other applications? If so, you may want to delete all the
AdobeFnt##.lst files on your system and then startup a suite program and see if that fixes the AWOL fonts.

What happened to the great help program that CS2 and then CS3 had? I don't seen any such program for CS4!!!!

The help system has been changed again. If you are online the Help menu takes you to the Adobe Community Help Center (link to help is on the right), otherwise it loads a local copy from your computer.
You can use the PDF copy of the manual on your installation discs or download it from the Community Help Center.

What happened to right click on file name in Indesign CS4?

I just upgraded to CS4, does anyone know what happened to being able to right click on indesign (open) file name to see where on your system it is filed? I can still do this in other programmes.

Firefox doesn't have such context menu entries for "Open Bookmark ...". So it looks that there has been a problem with the extension that added them and that started working again.

Weird color consistency problem: What happened?

Here's a weird one:
On Friday I worked on several RAW files in Lightroom 2.5.
I adjusted all colorations, white balance clarity sharpness etc.
Looked great. Saved the metadata to the files. Opened them in Bridge then Photoshop.
Looked perfect. All coloration looked exactly the same across all three apps as they usually do.
Saturday, I go to open some of the files.
The PSDs looked very washed out, overexposed and unsaturated.
My whole display looked badly calibrated. (Apple Cinema Display)(Too bright and low contrast)
So I started in on trying to fix it.
I recalibrated the monitor in the displays preferences dialog box.
Got the monitor looking correct. The gamma settings were acting strange. Not sticking to their default settings...
I restarted a couple of times.
But when I looked at the files there was a great discrepancy between what I was seeing in Lightroom and what I was seeing in Bridge and Photoshop.
The images looked perfect in Lightroom but washed out and desaturated in Bridge and Photoshop.
It looked like a really bad misunderstanding of color space information.
I have my color profile in Bridge (which is supposed to control all the CS4 color spaces) set to North America PrePress 2.
I could not see a way to set Lightroom's color profile in it's preferences.
All of the RAW files were exported to PSDs as Adobe RGB 1998 or sRGB.
Fast forward to today.
I just opened all three apps and looked at the files.
Today everything is matching again.
Weird!
(And no I was not drinking heavily yesterday)
What happened?
BTW, I am on a non Intel Mac, running OSX 10.5.8.
I had downloaded the Lightroom 3 Beta only to discover that it doesnt work on Non-Intel machines.
I deleted the beta from my hard drive although I dont think that was causing the condition.
I was not running LR 3.0 yesterday.
Anyone have any ideas why my color syncing went so far off between the 3 apps?
Makes me concerned that when my client gets the PSDs from me the files make look like crap on her system.

Undoubtedly a monitor profile problem. I sometimes have weird issues where my mac just seems to ignore the display profile after waking up from sleep (known bug in Apple's OS X BTW). Recalibrating and restarting the apps always fixes the issue.

What happened to contact sheet?

I have just upgraded to CS4 from CS... what happened to Contact Sheet? As in File>Automate>Contact Sheet? I don't seem to have this in my menu when I go to File>Automate... or, is there a new way to make a contact sheet that has changed from CS-CS4?

If you are anything like me, you will be dismayed by the prospect of making contact sheets in the Bridge PDF output module, instead of file/automate/contact sheet.
I would just encourage you to persist a bit with the output module. I did and wouldn't go back now. Headers, footers, page numbers etc save me a lot of time, and it is much quicker.

What happened to dreamweaver file created in xp when opened in vista?

I created a dreamweaver site in CS4 on windows xp, but recently upgraded to vista home premium. After I downloaded dreamweaver on vista, and restored my files, the Design and Code view shows unreadable text or code on my homepage html file. All of the other html files are normal. Attached is a sample of what my home page file looks like in design or code view. What happened to my file?

Your attachment didn't attach. Not your fault; they frequently don't.
To check out this unreadable text issue, go to your Edit > Preferences > Fonts and make sure that the fonts that are chosen are available on your new vista system. That should help with errors in Code View. If you are having Design View unreadability (!) check the header of your page to make sure that there is a declaration like this one:

It will appear right after the DOCTYPE declaration (in Code View).
It's pretty disappointing when a new system isn't actually BETTER right away! My sympathy.

When you are dealing with websites, image file size is a trade off between quality and download speed. There's not a lot of point to having high quality images if they take too long to download in the browser.
Nowadays we also have to consider the device that the end user is viewing the images on. An image that is optimized for viewing on a large screen is total overkill and unsuitable for those using mobile devices.
Really we should be supplying different versions of media files for different devices using @media rules in the stylesheet but this is rather outside of the scope of iWeb. If you use the built in image optimizer and the iWeb Photo template with slideshow, the application will optimize the images according to the way in which you set this function in preferences and the slideshow size will be automatically reduced for those viewing it on smaller screens.
If you want to give your viewers the opportunity to view large, high quality images, you can supply them as a download.

Do you remember Adobe said late last year that they will be updating their CS3 apps for Leopard in February. Well I'd like to know what happened!

Not to hijack your thread but when is CS4 coming out?
No one here will know that answer, either. It's pretty safe to say though since CS3 just came out a few months ago, I wouldn't expect to see CS4 for at least another year.

Executing Sql - whats happening on the server

Hi, I am using Oracle 8.17 on a AIX box.
When i run queries that have to do full table scans of a large table it virtually cripples my system. (nmon shows lots of disk activity / paging) .
Even when running
Select count(col1) from large_tab;
Im trying to understand whats happening behind the scenes here. Why is there lots of paging. what is oracle doing?
Our database is set to rule based optimiser as the vendor providing the software does not allow for use of cost base optimizer / or compute statistics. :-0 :-(

What happened to Basic Text ?

About a year ago I put together a long sequence of dissolving titles in CS3 using Effect > Text > Basic Text. I just opened that project in CS4 hoping to use it as a template for a new sequence - but found that the Basic Text option had disappeared, and that although I can see the words from last year, the CS4 Type Tool can't get hold of them. What happened ? Is my CS3 sequence a bit map ?

By the way, basic text is in the obsolete folder, so you may want to learn the standard text tools as i guess it will disapear in some upcoming versions.

Monitor frozen or blank - what happened?

Premiere Pro CS4 - Vista Matrox Axio
This morning, I lost the view in my program monitor. It is either white or I get, when scrolling, a frozen frame of my timeline. Playing it, I hear the sound. If I choose for instance to have a vectorscope view, it seems to work well... Any idea what happened?

Matrox was having issues with PrPro CS4.1, and were working on new drivers. Some of their later beta drivers seemed to be working fine. I do not know if they have an official release yet. Especially if you have CS4.1, I'd strongly suggest checking the driver releases for your card. I do not recall which Matrox cards were affected.
