What happened to .xmp files?

I have noticed recently that my Bridge program (cs4) has not been automatically exporting .xmp files into the folder where I store my images. I have been doing a lot of reading, but still can't seem to find a solid answer as far as what to do.
I have figured out how to export .xmp files into another folder, but what's the point of that? I want the metadata for my images to stay with my images. When I move them from folder to folder using Bridge, the xmp files used to move also, so I never lost my metadata.
I also empty my cache fairly often. I noticed that Bridge was no longer exporting xmp files when I emptied my cache and ALL my metadata that I had added to my images was gone, just like that.
I am a photographer and need that information to go somewhere permanent automatically, not in the cache which is supposed to store temporary file information.
Anyone have any idea?
Thanks so much!

Strange, I responded using email and this normally functions well, maybe the chance in formatting and quoting did not get through?
I don't want you to think I'm ignoring you.
How could you think of that...
here is a copy of the mail, hope the formatting keeps clear!

It is what I understood (after briefly scanning through page) from this post that advices to shoot in K20 generated DNG instead of the PEF format.

For your files in certain conditions at high iso this seems to be the case, the DNG files converted by Adobe DNG converter do miss the border pixels needed for the script from GordonBGood.
I tried to download that application but it seems only for Windows, how do you manage to use it?? Thought you have given up on Windows long time ago??
Nevertheless I also tried the apply image method you quoted from Bruce Fraser in an other post, using subtract with offset 128 and both perfectly the same.
I do agree that Raw converters from nowadays can get more out of the Raw data then they did 8 years ago, trying an 8 year old raw file gives a much better result (but then you also have to keep in mind that our knowledge and skills in Digital imaging have grown in combination with better color management understanding and good calibration soft and hardware is also due to this!)
Also I'm not afraid my benefit from the future Raw converters will differ if I use DNG instead of the original Raw, but that is my personal believe. The result I get nowadays for combination of DNG and PS are already more then satisfying, and sure it will be better in the future but for that I have also faith in DNG :-)

That is just a question of the market, as you could see that our young friend that started this post never uses it and I do hear more voices saying they don't use it or don't see the use for it.  Eventually there will be no need for letting seldom used formats taking space in menu's and applications.
DNG however is still talk of the town, whether you like it or not. And therefore more likely to be around in 15 years time. But you are right, If I was to know about what was going on in 15 years from now I would not be a photographer but a fortuneteller and in my free time bathing in countless money :-) :-)

That I still can't understand unless you have chosen to use the original raw file included and created a double size for the file. But as stated in earlier post, not the case on my system.

Statistically you have lived the greatest part of your life and knowing your health is not something to be jealous of (to put it mildly) your statement about this also is something only time will learn.
Let's wish we still can have a long period for our little chats, agreed or not.
I will give up on getting you to DNG (for now as it is...) :-) :-)

my mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.

  • What happened to dreamweaver file created in xp when opened in vista?

I created a dreamweaver site in CS4 on windows xp, but recently upgraded to vista home premium. After I downloaded dreamweaver on vista, and restored my files, the Design and Code view shows unreadable text or code on my homepage html file. All of the other html files are normal. Attached is a sample of what my home page file looks like in design or code view. What happened to my file?

Your attachment didn't attach. Not your fault; they frequently don't.
To check out this unreadable text issue, go to your Edit > Preferences > Fonts and make sure that the fonts that are chosen are available on your new vista system. That should help with errors in Code View. If you are having Design View unreadability (!) check the header of your page to make sure that there is a declaration like this one:
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
It will appear right after the DOCTYPE declaration (in Code View).
It's pretty disappointing when a new system isn't actually BETTER right away! My sympathy.

  • What effects do XMP files have in CS, LR, and Elements (Organizer & Editor)?

I wonder what effects the .XMP files have on Photoshop applications.  Should I keep them when working in the OS (WIN7) or chuck them?  What effects would deleting XMP have?

THe XMP files contain all the edit information for any raw files you have.  If you chuck them you will loose any edits you made.
If you do not want to see them in Bridge click View and uncheck show hidden files.  They only use about 2 kb.

Your file is most likely toast, but still:

what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).

Did you do the moving of the image file in the Finder or do you have a reference library as asked by Larry? In either case moving the files is a recipe for disaster as you've found out. You must either move the files back to their original locations or try to get those photos back into iPhoto as follows:
1 - Find the folder you moved the files into and COPY it to the Desktop.
2 - in iPhoto delete the photos that you're having the problems with as you normally would even though you can't see see them. Also delete all the photos that are in the folder you moved the other files into.
3 - drag the folder on the Desktop into iPhoto to import them as one event. If you get a duplicate warning I'd let it import the duplicate and use Duplicate Annihilator to find them so you can cull out the duplicate you don't want.
Other than that you might have to start over from scratch as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

Your Creative Cloud files are stored on your desktop as well as on the Creative Cloud servers. If you cancel or downgrade your paid membership, you will still have access to all of the files in the Creative Cloud folder on your computer and via the Creative Cloud website.
Your account will be downgraded to a free membership, which includes 2GB of storage. If you’re using more than 2GB of storage, you will not be able to upload any new files to the cloud until the amount of online space used in your account drops below your allotted amount.

I just installed LR CC and am having trouble opening catalogs where I followed the instructions to upgrade.  Just posted a question about it.
Discovered a problem when I went looking for some images that were not included in the most recent catalog.  After opening up a couple of older ones and upgrading, I went back to the most recent and couldn't opening.  Message says it is not writable.  And also says it may be due to incorrect permissions.  If you have any suggestions for this, I would love to hear them.

  • What happens to installation files when an installation fails.

Having just come from a Windoze platform my question is as follows:  (MAC OS X Lion)
I tried installing Adobe Elements and I am now aware that the version is too old and not supported by Lion.
So the installation seemed to run to completion and it was only at the end that the system reported that the application could no be opened.  What would have happened to the files that were written to the hard drive?  Is Mac OS X clever enough to do a roll back?  If not, how do I find where the files (if any), can be found.
Windows is normally quite horrible when it comes to uninstall and install failures and requireing the user to troll the registry to actually remove all traces of the app.
    Any suggestions welcome.

I don't have Adobe Elements, but most apps that install outside of the Applications folder usually have an unistaller. Use that. Then get the current version that works with Lion and install it. Any same named items will get overwritten by the new one's installer.

  • What happened to my file?

I have been working for 3 months on a presentation (detailed speaker notes with a lot of research and time). Each time I finish working I save my work. It has been saved dozens of times on this computer, but I usually keep it open and minimized at the bottom. One day earlier this week my computer did a random spontaneous shut down and everything closed. I wasn't worried since I knew I had saved it. Today, I go to open the file and most of the presentation is gone!
The last slide I made is still there and as well as the first five slides (which are not really the first slides I did). So..it's a very random mix of what pops up. Is there a way to recover a previously saved version? What happened to my presentation?
    Thanks!

    Can you post a screenshot?

  • Help- What happened to my files?

I changed the name of the my computer (System Preferences>Sharing).
When I changed it back, most of my stuff is gone- calendar, itunes contents, mail, etc. It's almost like it's a new machine? Where did my stuff go? I didn't delete anything. Please help.

Changing your computer name in the Sharing preferences would not cause this to happen. I suspect that you may have also changed the short name on your home folder. It would be simple enough to change the folder name back and remove the new folder it created however you probably won't have permission to do so. Let me know if this seems to be what happened and I can explain how to fix it.

  • What happens to other files on the TC when TM fills it up?

I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer for this issue:
I am using TM to backup the iMac automatically. I have moved my iTunes music folder and associated library files to the TC so that I can access it from any computer in the house. I know that when the TM fills the TC it starts to delete old back-ups...will it leave the "other" folders (Ie music folder) alone or will it delete it?
Also, if iTM does leave the "other" folders alone and the TC is full what will happen when I try to add a folder to iTunes (Ie into the music folder on the TC)? Will it delete the oldest backup or will it tell me the drive is full?
    Thanks.

"Best practice" is going to be defined by each company.  I worked for Microsoft for 13.5 years, assisting over 100 large companies deploy either Windows or Exchange, and none had the same definition for their "best practice".
If you need access to a mailbox for a time period, you figure out a way to keep it.  If you want any terminated employee's mailbox gone tomorrow, it is gone tomorrow.
I am a fan of having some sort of process that runs periodically to clear out unnecessary mailboxes and accounts, but if there are business reasons for keeping them around, that needs to be defined into the process.  In my current company, terminated
accounts are kept for 30 days, mailbox included.  We give mailbox access to a different employee if required and tell them that if they need anything, they need to pull it into their own mailbox.  Then, when the account disappears, the mailbox goes
into the dumpster.  So, if someone forgot to pull a message, they tell their boss and live with the consequences.
But again, that's just another example of how it might be handled.  You get to define what will work for you, including pulling your business units in to help with the definition.
