What hard drive does the iMac use ?

I have a 17 inch iMac with intel Core Duo with 80GB hard drive. The screen is damaged because of vertical lines and i am replacing it myself and i thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the hard drive while i am at it.
Am i correct in assuming that the hard drive is a SATA 2.5" laptop drive ?
I found a cheap Hitachi 200GB 2.5 inch 3 gb/sec 5400 RPM, 8MB Cache, 12MS SATA II drive. Is this suitable ?
Will any 2.5 inch SATA drive, be it SATA, SATA II, SATA III etc. work fine ?

Are you sure, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac's came with a 160GB Hard Drive.
see > iMac (Early 2006) - Technical Specifications
No, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac uses a 3.5 SATA Drive.
Personally I have upgraded the Hard Drive in several Early Core Duo's using both 320GB and 500GB WD Cavair Blue's.

Yes, if you do a fresh install of the operating system, it's like a brand new machine.
No, if you restore from a backup like a bootable clone or TimeMachine drive.

  • What optical drive does the G5 iSight use?

My question relates to the G5 iSight model. A friend has given me his to fix since the original drive no longer reads.
What kind of drive can I use? A standard laptop slot loading drive or does it have to be an apple certified Superdrive?
Thanks for your help on this.

If you go to the Apple logo and click About this Mac, then on More Info, then in under Hardware, click on Disk Burning, and it will show what Superdrive was installed - probably the Matshita DVD-R UJ-846.
They are not the most 'sturdy' of items, alledgedly because thay were originally designed for a Macbook (horizontal operation, whereas in the iMac they are asked to work in the vertical position).
Mine failed a few months ago, in as much as it would do everything except burn DVDs. For that I now use an external Samsung Super Writemaster DVD writer that cost the reasonable amount of £27 from Amazon! Works a treat. I saw no good reason to pay up to £200 for a more sophisticated make and model!
Getting an internal Superdrive replaced by an Apple Centre or authorised dealer would cost a lot more.

  • External Hard Drive for 2 iMacs using Lightroom 3

    Hi,
I'm going to try to make this as clear as posslbe.... please help!
I'm a professional photographer using Lightroom 3.  I have two iMacs one is an i5, the other an i7, both running OSX Lion.  I have a NAS (Synology DS410j) to store my images and I then link the catalog to the images on the NAS.
Camera Raw Cache is on an external USB and works great.  I've even experimented with putting the catalog on the external USB and no speed issues.
Now that I have two iMacs I'd like to find a HDD or an enclosure that I can use to place catalogs on while working on them.  I know VERY well that you can't use network storage to place the LR3 Catalog because Adobe won't allow it (various reasons I already know).
Question - Does anyone know of an External Hard Drive or an Enclosure with two Firewire 800 ports that does not act like a network attached device?  I need it to act like a hard wire attached hard drive so I can put multiple LR3 Catalogs on it and access them from the i5 or the i7.
    Note:
I do not plan to have two people work on the same catalog at the same time.
Users would only open a catalog (on the attached device) that is NOT currently being utilized.
I would however, have two computers accessing the device at the same time via Firewire 800.
    Bottom Line:
I want to work on one wedding per catalog then import them into a Master Catalog when completed (I have my reasons). Because I have all of my images on a RAID NAS that catalog is easily opened by any computer on the network and the files can be easliy linked.
If I'm editing a wedding and then want to pause with that one and open another catalog someone else was just working on and then closed the catalog I don't want to copy/paste the catalog from the other iMac or move an external hard drive...
I just want to be able to open it on the HDD attached to both computers that house all of the catalogs.
I also want to ensure User 1 and User 2 can access any catalog on the attached device at any time (unless it's currently opened by the other user) and be working on catalogs simultaniously (once again, not the same catalog as the other user... a totally different catalog but on the same device).
Thanks so much and I'd love to know if anyone has ever done this!
    I can't wait for a Thunderbolt Drive!

Three EHD's that I know of have 2 FW800 ports that are NOT network drives. They are:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
Personally I use the Lacie (I have 4 total), my iMac has 3 daisy chained together via FW 800. However I recommend all three for build quality, feature sets and performance. How they would work with 2 different computers attached to the same drive and accessing the same library I can't say. I'd recommend contacting the manufacturers and asking that question.

  • How can I wipe my imac hard drive if the imac is not recognising my keyboard

I fell into the same trap many others have with installing Windows via bootcamp & not setting up the hard drive formatting properly. So I've got a "Disk error. Press any key to restart message."
I've tried pressing command to get it to boot into OS and using 'c' to get it to boot from the OS cd. But my mouse and keyboard are not being recognised so these don't work.
I'm thinking that there must be a way to wipe the hard drive so I can reinstall OS. I thought it may work to connect it to another computer in target disk mode, but the iMac won't recognise me pressing T. Would anyone know whether there is any other way I can wipe the hard drive or otherwise get OS back running?

If your keyboard is a wireless one, wait until the startup chimes sound and then immediately press the appropriate key.
If your keyboard is a non-Apple one, then startup commands may not be embedded. In this case, using an Apple keyboard should work, such as the original one that came with the machine.
The key to hold down to bring up Startup Manager during booting is the Option key, not the Command key.

  • ITunes library on an external hard drive - does the HD need to be connected?

    Hi,
I want to move my iTunes library from my windows laptop to an external hard drive to free up space. I've read up about how to do it, but the one thing that i still cant figure out is whether my hard drive needs to be continually connected for iTunes to work. Obviously this is not a easy option for a laptop and i want iTunes to work without a hard drive attached. If this is the case, what are my options? I have about 40GB in normal music files, which are being doubled by my iTunes library and taking up too much space on my internal hard drive
    Thanks.

I have my iTunes library on my hard drive, but keep a number of mp3's on an external hard drive..but here are some things I looked at to get an idea how to best manage this:

  • Why will iMac OS 10.6.8 intel core duo not write to SeaGate Goflex FreeAgent external hard drives? - when it used to!?

2 TB external hard drives (SeaGate GoFlex Free Agent) were formatted in NFTS to store movies over 4 GB so that I can transfer to PC's.  I downloaded camcorder movies in .mts files to this iMac and later transferred to my external hard drives.  I am now trying to transfer the quicktimemovie files that iMovie  made to the external hard drives and the iMac refuses to write ANYTHING to my EHD's.  But it used to just fine.  Now it says it can only read the EHD's?!  I really think the OS has been 10.6.8 all this time so why the sudden inability to write to my EHD's?
iMac has VMFusionware, perhaps it will write to EHD's when this is going?
I'm pretty sure I already have all the raw data (the .mts files) but I can't tell if they are the same as the quicktimemovie files.  So I think I can just trash the QTM files and remake them at some later date by uploading the .mts files to iMovie.  Is that right?
A friend was able to copy some of the QTM files to a thumb drive...

Spaced out and forgot to mention that these EHD's continue to work fine with a G5 PowerPC Mac maxed out at OS 10.5.8.  The G5 doesn't have a good iMovie so that's why I was using the iMac with OS 10.6.8.  The G5 writes to these EHD's no problem.
I'm wondering if the EHD's came with some software (I've googled around and Paragon sounds somewhat familiar) that I put on the Mac's that enable writing and I have forgotten about.
[edit] I remember there was some piece of paper talking about initial formatting of these 2 TB, USB 3.0 drives (STAC2000103).  I don't know where it is.  I have the box and it states "NTFS driver for Mac (R) pre-loaded on drive"...er, that means they should work with any Mac?...wait, do I have to seek it out and run it to get it to work?

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • External hard drive disappears when imac wakes up after sleep

    Hi Everyone.
Got a really silly question but I can't seem to figure out where to fix this
I have 4 USB 500gig hard drives all run off a 13 port powered hub.
Now I have one hard drive set aside for my films which I and ripping so they can be view via my apple tv 2nd gen. The other is for MP3's and the other 2 get are redundunt at the moment.
No the problem is when I rip a DVD, I rip it to the hard drive on the iMac and then trans the files to the external drive.  As I rip them at a high quality (2 to 3 gigs per film) I get the transfer box saying it will take X amount of time.  The only thing is the iMac after some minutes will go to sleep.
When you wake it up the hard drives have disappeared and the is an error saying the drive have been ejected incorrectly.
I'm assuming the iMc is putting the drives to sleep when it goes to sleep.
Is there a way to keep the hard drives running but only put the momitor to sleep.  The problem is also happening when I use USB memory sticks (I have a 4/8/16 & 32gig sticks all with various bits of info that I am sorting out from the move from Windows PC to Mac.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this fix coz I can't seem to find the setting
    Thanks
    Rick

When you are doing this, set the drive to never sleep, slider completely to the right and display sleep to something like five minutes. Or just hit Control-Shift-Eject, to sleep the display. Uncheck "put the hard disks to sleep..." That said, the firmware on the externals may be spinning them down. But this shouldn't be happening if they are being written to.

  • How do I set up my G Raid external hard drive on my iMac

just bought a brand new G Raid external hard drive to act as my time machine back up and external storage source for music and film. I have no idea how to set it up and to get things rolling I have simply plugged it in.
    any suggestions?

    Matt cool...
the G Raid drive has worked perfectly then it is my understanding that is rather limited
so I have a 4T drive which means that I have two drives of 2T
as this is acting as my Time Lapse on my iMac which gives me an automatic back up every 10 mins at the moment which I am guessing is to regular and I can change this?
Therefore I should buy a further drive (in spain at the apple store cost is 350 euros) and on this drive I should store all my content music and film as I should have a minimum of data stored on teh internal hard drive on the iMac itself to improve functionality?
does the same apply for my MacBook Pro? this is a mobile solution for film and music (final cut pro and logic) or do I use a solution that does not need an external power source?
    any suggestion welcome

  • My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago.`

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
