What Hardware I need?

Hello,
we want to develope a application who should use a Oracle database. But we did not exactly know what traffic or transactions occurs.
But we still know the user count. The amount of users are 400 concurrent users. 30% power users and 70% low profile users. The transactions from the application might be medium to complex.
Is there any document or white paper where a rough sizing is declared?
With which hardware requirements should I calculate?
I hope anybody can help me. I know, this question is asked really often, but a lot of the questions are not answered and the rest is not exactly that what I need.
Thank you in advance!
Johannes

It is impossible to give any useful answer to a question such as:
"for an application, which hardware do we need?"
To start with, try to describe the application design and architecture.Thank you for your quick answer.
I know that it is quiet impossible to give a good answer with such much variables. But I will try to explain the details I am currently know.
The application runs on a application server. The client program communicate only with the application server. All transactions from the database will communicate between the application server and database server.
The application mainly requests data, put it in a form. The user can edit the data and send it back. But there are also reporting features in the application who requests a lot of data and calculate and ...
The problem is: At the moment we don't know exactly how much data it is, because the application is not developed. We still have a prototype, but the demanding from the customer is sophisticated.
What do you mean by concurrent here? Power users? Low profile users? No batch >jobs? What's a medium transaction like? Complex? .....
Sorry but there's just too many unknowns to resolve this "equation".400 Concurrent users are at one time 400 users are connected. Everytime 400 users are connected.
Power users are users who do very often actions in the application. Every half minute I guess and Low profile users do every 5 or 10 minutes a action. At the moment no batch job is defined.
A medium transaction is a query where some data will be requested from the database and a complex is a query with calculating and sorting (for the reporting functionality). But sorry, I can not define it more detail, because we didn't know the exact definitions for the application (it is in work).
The customer wants a suggestion for the hardware and we have to give them.
Well, for the 400 simultaneously active users (if this is what you mean by concurrent), >you need some amount of CPU and RAM to support the required processes.
What about data volume and growth?
Please provide more info if you want a chance of getting useful feedback :) Yes, you're right with the 400 simultaneously active users. It will be good to know the amount of CPU and RAM the users covers for minimum.
The initial data should be 250 GB. I don't know the growth, but I think it will be 250 MB per day (normally it should be lower, but bigger is everytime better :D ).
We plan to use for the data holding by a Storage Area Network, I think the I/O should not be the problem.
I know this information is not enough to give a exactly feedback. But anyhow we need a rough valuing of the hardware. Bigger is better.
Maybe there are some white papers where are the transaction volume are documentated to calculate some requirements with the developers or any similar descriptions about sizing.
For the data availabilty do you recommend grid computing or make a cluster?
Sorry, but more information I do not have. I have also a lot of difficulties to calculate the system with such much unknowns. If time comes it would be better, because then the application is defined and many other unknowns will be cleared. I only need the information to make a quick hardware requirement and can say "okay customer, the hardware costs round about a million dollar" or "it is a good day for you, you can geht the hardware by round about 100thousand dollar". 20% up or down doesn't matter. Bigger is better :)
I talked enough, let me know if this information is right enough for you.

  • IMac & FCP: what hardware is needed?

    Hey all -
I'd like to use my iMac with FCP (I have Studio 2).
The iMac is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB RAM and running OS 10.5.8.
I would be ingesting DVCam video (standard definition) from my Sony VTR via 400 FireWire into the hard drive.
What hardware (external drive, etc) would be a good mix with my iMac?
    Thanks!

Any good quality Firewire disk would be good. Gtech have a very good rep, but are expensive. Western Digital do Firewire external drives up to (I think) 2TB. Don't touch Iomega. I have one, and I'm on the third replacement.
Set FCP scratch disks to point to the external drive
Format the drive to Mac OS Journaled (do it in Disk Utility).
My recommendation would be to get 2 externals - one as a working drive and one as a backup. Sizewise, it depends how much video you'll produce. If you're doing it occasionally for fun, 2 x 500GB will be fine, but 2 x 1TB would be better.

  • What hardware i need to buy if i want to connect 8 analog lines

Hi, i need to connect in a branch office one router supporting :
    8 analog lines
    1 ethernet interface
    1 serial interface
    and support security issues.
what model in the 2600 family router i need to buy?
should i need to buy one network module NM-HDV2?
if i need to buy the NM-HDV2,may i connect two VIC2-4FXO?
    Thanks

    You would need
    2611XM chassis
    NM-HD-2V card
    VIC2-4FXO
    VIC2-4FXO
    WIC-1T
Appropriate IOS with voice and security feature sets.
The NM-HDV2 card has digital ports and only one VIC slot, so would not handle 8 analogue lines.
Best option is to contact your local Cisco office and speak to the account team to confirm if this system is best suited to your requirements.

  • What Hardware do I need ?

I have a Power Mac G4 Tower running OS 10.4.11. I also have a camcorder that only has composite video (analog) and Analog Audio. I want to be able to move movies from the camcorder to iMovie and then make DVDs to run on my G4 or another computer.
I have no idea what hardware I need to buy. I could not do a lot of searching here as I am on a 24.4K dial up connection. I am looking for reasonable quality and a reasonable price. Thanks
    Paul

Hi Paul - if you do not have many movies in analogue format, then your best hardware choice would actually be to buy a mini dv camcorder. Then future films will be in the native iMovie format.
But see here for a converter:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/tv-tuner-adapters/canopus-advc-55-video/4505-9332_7-3079 2305.html
You may be best to get a shop to do the conversions, and buy a dv camcorder instead - possibly a better longer term solution!

  • What hardware ?

    Hi all,
I am working on a new experimental set up for my thesis and I want to control
the whole process using LabView 8.
The set up has two chambers each one connected to a capacitance manometer
    (http://www.mksinst.com/cgi-bin/product.exe?pid=626a) and,  4 solenoid
valves (http://www.mksinst.com/pdf/HPSEMCvDS.pdf) to control the flow.
My goal is to open the valves when the pressure reaches a certain value in each
    chamber using LabView.
So far I have ordered the valves with 24v DC solenoids (1.3 A initial /
0.3 A running) and an external power supply for all of them. For the
capacitance manometers I have ordered a Digital Power Supply
    (http://www.mksinst.com/pdf/Pdr2000ds.pdf) with an Rs-232 interface.
I am very new to LabView and I am not an electrical engineer.
    I don't know what
hardware I need to connect the valves and the manometers to the PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    George.

    Hi Gef,
I've used NIs ER-8 (and ER-16) relay boxes, and your current-requirements are within specs for these relays.  Don't know how long they last when switched at 1.5 amps...   You can control the ER-8 with an inexpensive DIO board (DIO24?) - anyway pick the DIO board from the options listed on the ER-8/16 page.
It looks like you may want some analog-input (voltage measuring) capability for your pressure-transducers(?)  If so, you might do both DIO and analog-INs with one multifunction DAQ board... and a mess of accessories for cabling multifunction board to the ER-8 as well as an anaolg break-out box.  I wouldn't do that !  If you need analog-INs, I'd advise a seperate analog board (w/breakout box) and cable straight to the BO-box!
    Cheers.
When they give imbeciles handicap-parking, I won't have so far to walk!

  • Can I set up a 2 (or 3) room audio system? I have iphone 3, iphone 4 and ipad 2 and need to know what hardware, if any, I need for this (airport express?, apple TV?) Also, would I use icloud or home sharing?

I need to know what hardware, if any, I need to do this (airport express?, apple TV?)
I simply want to send music from my itunes to 2 different rooms at the same time. Is it possible? I have iphone3, iphone4 and ipad2 if that helps.
Also, would I use icloud or home sharing? Sorry for the noob question, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

The answer is not if you use iTunes.
The TC is NOT an iTunes server.. it is not a media device at all. It is a backup location for Time Machine.
You need a computer in the network which stores the iTunes library and you can then play it via the ipad.
A mini with a large USB drive plugged in will work fine.. it doesn't need to be new.. a couple of years old mini will work just as well.
As an extention to this, can we use multiple Airport expresses plugged into mutiple sound systems to simultaneously access different music from the same time capsule?
I am not sure.. there will be network limitations to this.
Look up how to use itunes in a network.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4620
You would do better perhaps posting the question in iTunes section.. if as I guess you are actually using iTunes.

  • Hi ALL, I need to control the temperature of a furnace. The Thermocouple ouputs are available as RS-485. What Hardware and system configuration should I prefer?

I need to automate the control of a gas carburising furnace. The available signals are Thermocouple K-Type (4 nos., one each from the three zones and one from the geometrical center of the furnace) and Oxygen Analyser. That makes it a total of 5 signals, all available in RS-485 format, which I need to acquire (10 samples/second) and then initiate a control action as per the rule base. Reliability is a major issue and the system has to work in harsh conditions.
What hardware would suit my purpose? I would prefer NI hardware which can be programmed via VB or VC++. LabVIEW may be considered as the last option.
    Ap
art from using the thermocouple/Oxygen analyser signals for controlling it is also desired to store them on a PC for analyses and visualisation (via graphs etc etc)
My need is URGENT and would appreciate any help. Thanx in advance
    Gurdas

    Hi Gurdas,
I can give you some ideas to start with:
    - a cheap solution - a rs232/rs485 converter(http://www.rs485.com/pconverters.html) and do the code in VB [you have to do both communication and data management)
    - a medium solution - a AT-485 or PCI-485 NI board (I think that you'll get some NI libraries to control it from VB/VC++) [just data]
    - a better solution - a LabVIEW or Measurement Studio with a NI 485 card in order to avoid wasting time with too much programming
    - a much better solution - LabVIEW/Measurement Studio with an ENET-485 NI card (of course, you'll need a network passing by your lab :-))
Regarding harsh conditions, I think that rs485 allows you to stay far enough.
    Hope this helps somehow.

  • How do I control furnace temps (ramp and soak)? What hardware do I need?

    Please help me~~~~
I use Labview version 8.2 and Compact Field Point.  I currently have a small Lindberg/Blue furnace (120V, 6.8A, 8KW) that has a mounted Lindberg/Blue UP150 programmable controller.  The temperature control is not currently connected to my PC (and that's a pain).
I would like to replace the present furnace controller with labview control through Compact Field Point.  I need to create a ramp and soak program in labview.  My
    program must be able to:
Soak at 300C for 30 min
    ramp to 650C
soak at 650C for 15 min
    ramp to 700C
soak at 700C for 10 min
    cool to 300C
repeat the above steps as many times as desired.
I am familar with labview but have never controlled any furnace temps.  I have figured out that I will need the PID control toolkit.  But I'm totally stumped about the hardware I will need.  I have searched everywhere but can't find an explanation.  I have Compact Field Point and the furnace.  What hardware goes inbetween?  Just what hardware does the PID toolkit (PID VI's) send a signal to?  It seems to me the PID would read a thermocouple and then send a signal to some sort of current regulator that sends a varying current to the furnace.  Am I way off?  How do I set this up.  Can anyone recommend a good book or web site that explains how to set up furnace control using labview?
I really appreciate your help.  I'm at the end of my road without it.  Thanks alot.

If you can, use a solid state relay as this will be the most reliable and noise free solution to switching. Switching 8kW loads with a relay can lead to arcing of the contacts after a while (and other issues), this is bad news for computers. For an 8kW device you will need to mount the device on some form of heatsink / dissapation surface. Solid state relays normally use an opto-isolated coupling which can usually be powered in the range 3 to 24v. This is connected to the control output of your selected controller.
For control of this sort I personally I prefer a dedicated controller, I use a PC for data logging, program management and monitoring. This is for reliability more than anything else, an NI controller won't come with integrated display and controls to set the device and the foot print in the panel is considerably larger. They also take an age to boot in comparison. You should also consider that you could get an electrical engineer to fit a standard controller with suitable solid state relay etc. and that will help you meet any health and safety requirements easily and quickly! Don't forget than any modifications will need to meet local regulatory requirements such as CE and thus circuit diagrams must normally be produced etc.
If I have the choice of selecting a controller, I like the Eurotherm range of temperature controllers, they are available with varying options just like the controller mentioned in the thread. There are drivers available in this forum and the NI web site for the devices.
    http://www.eurotherm.com/
There is also OPC support and the diagnostic software available from Eurotherm is good.
But if a device has a specific manufacturers controller on it I might select one from the same family. Often I look around the plant / factory and see what models are in use. Using a model / type that already in use makes it easy for support in the factory and reduces support calls!
    Hope these thoughts help out.

Hi, I have been trying to update many things on my 2009 white macbook. Everytime I do it tells me I need a different version. I don't know what versions I need or even where to begin or if I need to purchase new hardware? It says my version is 10.5.8. I have tried downloading 10.6 but not sure what to do. Everyone else seems to be updating there's and mine is way behind however it still tells me I have no software updates...Any suggestions?

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was based on Power PC code and was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

When you say it "can not scan any wifi network" do you mean it is not detecting Wi-Fi networks?
Is Wi-Fi turned on in Settings > General > Wi-Fi?
Have you tried Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings?
Is it just the home network that the device will not connect to? or any network?

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
    Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

  • What Hardware Needed?

I'm brand new to Skype; in fact, I haven't even used it yet. I want to do some online teaching and need to know what hardware I and/or my student will need. I will be at my desktop computer at home; my student will be in a field running a dog over agility equipment. I want to be able to watch and provide instructions and feedback. What will I need to make this work?

This is a tall order. You probably need something like a Macromind Breez server. Unless you have deep pockets, you are probably not going to be able to do this kind of thing on your own and make a profit.
Start your research by doing some google searching for "online learning servers" or something like that.
