What hardware should i consider using if i am a graphic and media design?

I am a Graphical and media designer who is also into coding so i like producing websites. However, when it comes to reccommending hardware or even knowing any hardware at the slightest, i get really muddled up when choosing the right componants. I would like to know what good stuff i can use such as
Desktop
Hardware
Processor
Memory
Power Supply
CPU ?!?!?
these are just examples but it would be good if you can help me out!

If you're considering purchasing a Mac, why not go to an Apple Store and talk to one of the people there. Tell them exactly how you'll use your Mac. You'll get good advice and no sales pressure. If you're not near an Apple Store, you can call the Apple toll-free number where you live and get the same good advice. You can find out about hardware and software that you need to do the job.

You can use Microsoft Office for Mac, one of the free Office clones such as LibreOffice or Apple's iWork suite of apps. The iWork apps - Keynote (presentation), Pages (word processing & page layout) & Numbers (spreadsheet) are available individually from the Mac App Store. There are also versions for iOS available separately. And, coming this fall, iWork for iCloud.

While some people on this forum use CS5, the forum itself is devoted to Lightroom, which isn't at all the same, even though it has Photoshop in its name. You'd probably have much better luck by asking your question on one of the Photoshop forums.

MSI Live update previously had me install NV317MH.143. Now it is telling me the latest version is NV317MH.113, which looks like a downgrade in version #. Why is it swapping between the 14x and 11x lines? What version should I be using? I have Live Update 6.0.012 and win8.1.

I can confirm that what he's saying is true, I also have a 980 with 143 bios and MSI Live Update is telling me that there is a new bios 113 for my 980 Gaming.

Bcbarnes, lower number doesn't mean its a downgrade, they are just for different batches of 980 Gaming GPU's.
113 should really be for 980 gaming gpu's with serial number of lets say 03s for example, so it is strange that MSI Live Update is telling us to install 113 since our 980 serial code is 11s.

What hardware should I use for TTL synchronization?

I am searching for a hardware recommendation. Here's what the hardware should do: notify a PC program to run a subroutine upon detection of a TTL pulse (digital input change).
So I need one 1-bit digital input, and the device should communicate with a computer via USB. The TTL pulse voltage is about 4.7 V. Since the synchronization must be fairly precise, the delay should be on the order of 1 ms or less. Therefore the hardware should have a sampling rate of at least 1 – 10 kS/s.
I purchased the USB-6501 not realizing that it doesn't have any triggering or interrupt functionality, and now I don't think it will work for my application. I could constantly poll one of its inputs with my software to check for a change in value, but that would be relatively slow and hog my CPU. I would prefer that the device triggers or provides some kind of interrupt to my software application. I am considering using some NI software, but right now I'm using the session-based interface of the Data Acquisition Toolbox in the latest version of Matlab (R2013a, 64-bit) on 64-bit Windows 7.
I think either the USB-6008, USB-6009, or USB-6525 might be a good option, but I'm not sure. I don't fully understand the difference between the triggering/interrupt capabilities of the USB-6008/9 and the USB-6525. Any advice?

i do not hava license for matlab so i can not test it.
On this page you found the supported NI hardware and here is the information the 6008 can be
used in session mode Supported Hardware - National Instruments- NI-DAQmx
and if i understand the function startForeground correct is this a session mode function.
You can made some tests with a simulated 6321 or 6251, but if this also not works then you should contact
the mathworks to ask them how you should implement your functions with mathlab.

What's hardware or software should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?
1st question: when i try to do editing by using Premiere CS4 AVCHD sequence timeline, the edting monitor seems not smooth (like wearing goggles) & delay, and when i use AME to encode m2ts file (which not yet edit) to AVI file (about 1 hour), it take 2h 13min to finish, is it normal?
2nd question: i use mpeg2 HD 1440 file to do eding, the edting monitor also not very smooth but better than using m2ts file, after editing done, i try to encode these mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited about long 1 hr) to a New file mpeg2 1440 X 1080i HQ or even mpeg2 Pal DV HQ file, the encoding was not runthe encoding after wait for half an hour. How many hours it take usually????
3rd question: i use m2ts file video file to export as a Bitmap, 1 frame 1 picture bitmap, it take long time too, about 1 or 2min to finish encoding, if i export more than 1 picture, it take even more time, i have experienced it, 3 or 4 pictures need about 10 or 15 min to finish encoding. i used to using mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited file) to export frame as picture, it not run the encoding at all. WHY ????

I don't think a core-2 will work very well with AVCHD... you need at least an Intel i7 920... or whatever is current

Hi,
Yes, you can (should) remove exclude parameter if you like import all objects from export.
Here is example how you export full schema
expdp SYSTEM/password SCHEMAS=hr DIRECTORY=dmpdir DUMPFILE=hr.dmp LOGFILE=exp_hr.logAnd import it to another database
impdp SYSTEM/password SCHEMAS=hr DIRECTORY=dmpdir DUMPFILE=hr.dmp LOGFILE=imp_hr.logPlease note that you need create directory dmpdir to target database also.

What hardware should I run OS X server on now?

I have asked with Apple Store and I get no clear answer on this. I have a few clients that use only Mac clients, and some of them would be suitable candidate to run OS X Server for their file sharing, and group ware needs. One client are around 10 employees running an aging Windows Server that they want to replace. One obvious choice would be some Cloud service, but they want to have a local solution that isn't subscription based. I was going to offer them an OS X Server solution but I'm hesitant to what hardware to run it on! Now that the Mac Mini Server option, which was my obvious choice is gone, what would you recommend to run server on? Maxed out new Mini might do, 1TB drive, 8GB ram and Ci7 dual core with external storage? Or maybe an iMac with Ci7Quad core and 8-16GB RAM? I just think an iMac would look silly as a server, and the now gone mini Server had dual internal drives, perfect for cloning/mirroring...
Mc Pro is too expensive and you get very little storage and very much graphics performance that isn't needed for the money. Sigh. Apple really made this hard to figure out...

Hi Hasse,
A macmini should do fine for server purposes. Get one with 16GB memory (upgrading later on isn't an option) and a 256GB SSD. Depending on file sharing you should look into solutions presented by Promise Pegasus or LaCie 5BIG both with thunderbolt 2 connectivity. Connect that to a Gigabit Ethernet and you are good to go! An iMac will do as well, but performance wise there is no need to invest more than just for the screen. Unless you don't want it setup without any keyboard or a screen then a iMac will look lovely
Get another external drive (twice the size of your current data at least) for backups and clone the SSD drive of the macmini on a daily basis towards the thunderbolt storage. And create a backup plan for the thunderbolt storage to another drive. That will work great!
Long story short: mac mini as fast as possible. And go for RAID storage for file sharing, you'll thank me later

Small metatag / file renaming script: what "stuff" should I be using?

I need a small script that moves all videos, images and other files in a folder to
./year-month/day-hour-minute-seconds_originalfilename.ext
The date/time is supposed to come from the meta tags if the file has its own timestamp and from the file stats (creation date) if no meta data is available.
Now, this is how I would usually do something like this:
1) Install exiv2 and mediainfo and various other cli-tools that can extract timestamps from file meta data.
2) Mess around with those programs until after piping the output trough about 200 grep's and sed's I get a line of bash for everything I need.
3) Stick those lines together somehow into one huge mess consisting basically of just one single giant line of bash that inexplicably does the job
4) Instantly forget how it works and somehow accidental mess up my whole system the next time I try to modify & execute the script.
I already almost finished a bash script that works like that. And broke it. And don't understand how it works any more, so I was about to start over... but at the moment I guess I might have just enough spare time to do it right instead... so...
- What's would be the "right" way to do something like this?
- Should I just learn how to use functions instead of pipes or forget about bash and try python?
- Still use regex to fiddle it together or use something that can handle date/time as actual date+time instead of putting it into a string?
- Use various external tools (like exiv2 and mediainfo from the repos) or take something that has... uhm... API's or something... to handle... tag stuff itsself?
- What language / tools / methods would a programmer that knows all there is to know choose for a job like this?
I've written a lot of small scripts and a few "programs" in the past but never really got around to learn programming... for some reason I just got used to do everything I needed with only a few functions, loops and a lot of trying around + copy&paste somehow even if the code gets insanely awkward & impractical... so... I have no idea where to start looking for a "good" solution to this problem.

What program should I be using?

Hello friends,
I am wanting to make a 3-5 sec video clip taken portion of a movie that I have on my HD and email it to a friend.
I figured I could do this in iMovie, yet the file will not import. The original format was MPEG-1. I read that iMovie would only import MPEG-4 (why only MPEG-4!?), so I converted the file to MPEG-4 yet it still will not import.
Should I be using a different program for this? I don't want to spend any money right now. I have all of the iLife programs, and all the bundled stuff that comes with a current model iMac. In addition I just purchased Toast, but Toast is not for editing is it?
If there's no way to make iMovie work for me, is there a free download out there? Is there another program on my system that I could use for this?

I am considering using I Pad for a presentation and want to use it in a wireless environment and though a projector not a TV monitor. Can I use Apple TV and apple wireless base,

I also want to do it wirelessly so does the Apple wireless device work for this purpose, is so what do I need to connect that to the Apple TV and to projector. So, ideally I want to be able to operate the IPAD without it being connected to cables and have the image procted on screen using a projector which only has the VGA slot not an HDMI slot. any suggestions will be appreciated.

It can use Apple Tv, but will require a wireless network as well. The Apple TV has an HDMI output, and depending on the projector it may connect directly to it through HDMI.
There are adpaters out there that will convert from HDMI to several other types such as VGA or Composite oir RGB. It would not be directly an Apple product as it would work with the HDMI cable rather than the apple TV or iPad directly.
Basically your setup should be:
iPad -> Wifi Network -> Apple TV-- HDMI Cable-->Adapter---->Projector
If the iPad is iPad 2 or above you can mirror the entire display to the projector through the apple Tv.
The Adapter would be something like this for instance:

What Mac should i get for serious Audio recording, Video editing and Graphic's?

Hey im new to Macs and i want to upgrade to one. My question is what one?.. My current system is not powerfull enough to handle what i am doing and i want to upgrade. I plan on using the mac for serious music recording with protools or cubase, video editing and effects with adobe premiere pro and after effects and graphics and web type stuff the rest of the adobe collection.. ex photoshop, dreamweavor, flash, illistrator, etc. So pretty much i need it to handle the adobe cs5.5 master collection and a music recording daw without bogging down. I do serious music recording and video editing and effects that need power behind it and runs smoothly. Any tips, tricks, advise, etc would be greatly appreachated!. Btw im a college student and plan on getting the discount prices in the adobe collection and hopefully the mac and would like to get the best quality computer for the best price!

Buying refurbs from Apple is a great idea - except for my current iMac, all my Macs have been refurbished. However, I would only get a factory refurb from Apple - they come with the same warranty as new units and you can buy Applecare to extend that to a total of 3 years. And, as far as I know, the Apple online store is the only place where you can get factory refurbs.
