What Hardware / Which setup?

Hi Guys
As a newbie to servers I am hoping that someone can please give me some advice. I am looking to but a server basically to get my feet wet and start learning about networking, servers, services and web development. I am currently looking at an Xserve and either a Mac pro or iMac as the client - fortunately I have a good budget available . I have a couple of questions really about my idea?
1. Should I add raid mirroring to the Xserve to act as a backup or can I use something like time machine with an external hard drive?
2. How would I go about connecting all this up, I assume I would need a switch? If yes which one and why? I currently have a Draytek Vigor 2600vg wireless broadband router - would this work in place of a switch?
3. Could someone clarify that I could connect to the server via VPN to access files from a remote computer over the internet?
4. Would I benefit from any other hardware/software other than an xserve, client (mac pro/imac), switch and cabling?
5. Can I mix and match servers in the future, i.e. a Dell server running Linux - Ubuntu
Thanks for your time
Best regards
Jim

1. Should I add raid mirroring to the Xserve to act as a backup or can I use something like time machine with an external hard drive?
Rule number 1 - repeat after me. RAID is NOT backup. RAID is NOT backup. RAID is NOT backup.
RAID can provide protection against disk failure - a disk fails and you keep ticking. But that's it.
If your mail server configuration gets corrupted, it's corrupted on all disks in the mirror (if you're using mirror RAID). If your users' mailboxes get corrupted, they're corrupted on all disks in the mirror. If you delete a file, it's deleted on all disks in the mirror. Do you see where I'm going here?
RAID doesn't offer any chance of restore, which is an essential element in any backup process.
For maximum reliability and uptime you want BOTH backup and RAID.
You want RAID to protect you against real-time disk failure. You want backup to protect you against accidental file deletion and corruption issues.
2. How would I go about connecting all this up, I assume I would need a switch? If yes which one and why? I currently have a Draytek Vigor 2600vg wireless broadband router - would this work in place of a switch?
I have no idea about that Draytek - it's not listed as a current product on their site, so I have no way of checking its specs. If it's only a wireless router then it will not work since there's no wireless support on the XServe, so at the very least you'll need something with ethernet ports.
3. Could someone clarify that I could connect to the server via VPN to access files from a remote computer over the internet?
Probably. Mac OS X Server has a built-in VPN server that's pretty easy to configure. The biggest issue will be in network topology - how to get external connections to the server, and how your subnet(s) are set. In all, it can be done will somewhere between little and lots of work
4. Would I benefit from any other hardware/software other than an xserve, client (mac pro/imac), switch and cabling?
While the XServe is designed for 24/7 server operations (hot-swap drives, power supplies, etc.) it really is designed to sit in a rack. If you don't have a rack then there's little point in getting an XServe over a MacPro, especially for a test/learning environment. At 30" deep it's not something that will easily sit on a desk.
5. Can I mix and match servers in the future, i.e. a Dell server running Linux - Ubuntu
Mix and match to do what? You can have whatever servers you like running whatever services you like. Whether they're integrated or standalone, though, makes a big difference, but it depends on what you want to do with them.

  • What hardware should I run OS X server on now?

    Hi!
I have asked with Apple Store and I get no clear answer on this. I have a few clients that use only Mac clients, and some of them would be suitable candidate to run OS X Server for their file sharing, and group ware needs. One client are around 10 employees running an aging Windows Server that they want to replace. One obvious choice would be some Cloud service, but they want to have a local solution that isn't subscription based. I was going to offer them an OS X Server solution but I'm hesitant to what hardware to run it on! Now that the Mac Mini Server option, which was my obvious choice is gone, what would you recommend to run server on? Maxed out new Mini might do, 1TB drive, 8GB ram and Ci7 dual core with external storage? Or maybe an iMac with Ci7Quad core and 8-16GB RAM? I just think an iMac would look silly as a server, and the now gone mini Server had dual internal drives, perfect for cloning/mirroring...
Mc Pro is too expensive and you get very little storage and very much graphics performance that isn't needed for the money. Sigh. Apple really made this hard to figure out...
    /Hasse

    Hi Hasse,
A macmini should do fine for server purposes. Get one with 16GB memory (upgrading later on isn't an option) and a 256GB SSD. Depending on file sharing you should look into solutions presented by Promise Pegasus or LaCie 5BIG both with thunderbolt 2 connectivity. Connect that to a Gigabit Ethernet and you are good to go! An iMac will do as well, but performance wise there is no need to invest more than just for the screen. Unless you don't want it setup without any keyboard or a screen then a iMac will look lovely
Get another external drive (twice the size of your current data at least) for backups and clone the SSD drive of the macmini on a daily basis towards the thunderbolt storage. And create a backup plan for the thunderbolt storage to another drive. That will work great!
Long story short: mac mini as fast as possible. And go for RAID storage for file sharing, you'll thank me later
    Goodluck

  • Can I set up a 2 (or 3) room audio system? I have iphone 3, iphone 4 and ipad 2 and need to know what hardware, if any, I need for this (airport express?, apple TV?) Also, would I use icloud or home sharing?

I need to know what hardware, if any, I need to do this (airport express?, apple TV?)
I simply want to send music from my itunes to 2 different rooms at the same time. Is it possible? I have iphone3, iphone4 and ipad2 if that helps.
Also, would I use icloud or home sharing? Sorry for the noob question, any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

The answer is not if you use iTunes.
The TC is NOT an iTunes server.. it is not a media device at all. It is a backup location for Time Machine.
You need a computer in the network which stores the iTunes library and you can then play it via the ipad.
A mini with a large USB drive plugged in will work fine.. it doesn't need to be new.. a couple of years old mini will work just as well.
As an extention to this, can we use multiple Airport expresses plugged into mutiple sound systems to simultaneously access different music from the same time capsule?
I am not sure.. there will be network limitations to this.
Look up how to use itunes in a network.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4620
You would do better perhaps posting the question in iTunes section.. if as I guess you are actually using iTunes.

  • Hi ALL, I need to control the temperature of a furnace. The Thermocouple ouputs are available as RS-485. What Hardware and system configuration should I prefer?

I need to automate the control of a gas carburising furnace. The available signals are Thermocouple K-Type (4 nos., one each from the three zones and one from the geometrical center of the furnace) and Oxygen Analyser. That makes it a total of 5 signals, all available in RS-485 format, which I need to acquire (10 samples/second) and then initiate a control action as per the rule base. Reliability is a major issue and the system has to work in harsh conditions.
What hardware would suit my purpose? I would prefer NI hardware which can be programmed via VB or VC++. LabVIEW may be considered as the last option.
    Ap
art from using the thermocouple/Oxygen analyser signals for controlling it is also desired to store them on a PC for analyses and visualisation (via graphs etc etc)
My need is URGENT and would appreciate any help. Thanx in advance
    Gurdas

    Hi Gurdas,
I can give you some ideas to start with:
    - a cheap solution - a rs232/rs485 converter(http://www.rs485.com/pconverters.html) and do the code in VB [you have to do both communication and data management)
    - a medium solution - a AT-485 or PCI-485 NI board (I think that you'll get some NI libraries to control it from VB/VC++) [just data]
    - a better solution - a LabVIEW or Measurement Studio with a NI 485 card in order to avoid wasting time with too much programming
    - a much better solution - LabVIEW/Measurement Studio with an ENET-485 NI card (of course, you'll need a network passing by your lab :-))
Regarding harsh conditions, I think that rs485 allows you to stay far enough.
    Hope this helps somehow.

  • How do I control furnace temps (ramp and soak)? What hardware do I need?

    Please help me~~~~
I use Labview version 8.2 and Compact Field Point.  I currently have a small Lindberg/Blue furnace (120V, 6.8A, 8KW) that has a mounted Lindberg/Blue UP150 programmable controller.  The temperature control is not currently connected to my PC (and that's a pain).
I would like to replace the present furnace controller with labview control through Compact Field Point.  I need to create a ramp and soak program in labview.  My
    program must be able to:
Soak at 300C for 30 min
    ramp to 650C
soak at 650C for 15 min
    ramp to 700C
soak at 700C for 10 min
    cool to 300C
repeat the above steps as many times as desired.
I am familar with labview but have never controlled any furnace temps.  I have figured out that I will need the PID control toolkit.  But I'm totally stumped about the hardware I will need.  I have searched everywhere but can't find an explanation.  I have Compact Field Point and the furnace.  What hardware goes inbetween?  Just what hardware does the PID toolkit (PID VI's) send a signal to?  It seems to me the PID would read a thermocouple and then send a signal to some sort of current regulator that sends a varying current to the furnace.  Am I way off?  How do I set this up.  Can anyone recommend a good book or web site that explains how to set up furnace control using labview?
I really appreciate your help.  I'm at the end of my road without it.  Thanks alot.

If you can, use a solid state relay as this will be the most reliable and noise free solution to switching. Switching 8kW loads with a relay can lead to arcing of the contacts after a while (and other issues), this is bad news for computers. For an 8kW device you will need to mount the device on some form of heatsink / dissapation surface. Solid state relays normally use an opto-isolated coupling which can usually be powered in the range 3 to 24v. This is connected to the control output of your selected controller.
For control of this sort I personally I prefer a dedicated controller, I use a PC for data logging, program management and monitoring. This is for reliability more than anything else, an NI controller won't come with integrated display and controls to set the device and the foot print in the panel is considerably larger. They also take an age to boot in comparison. You should also consider that you could get an electrical engineer to fit a standard controller with suitable solid state relay etc. and that will help you meet any health and safety requirements easily and quickly! Don't forget than any modifications will need to meet local regulatory requirements such as CE and thus circuit diagrams must normally be produced etc.
If I have the choice of selecting a controller, I like the Eurotherm range of temperature controllers, they are available with varying options just like the controller mentioned in the thread. There are drivers available in this forum and the NI web site for the devices.
    http://www.eurotherm.com/
There is also OPC support and the diagnostic software available from Eurotherm is good.
But if a device has a specific manufacturers controller on it I might select one from the same family. Often I look around the plant / factory and see what models are in use. Using a model / type that already in use makes it easy for support in the factory and reduces support calls!
    Hope these thoughts help out.

  • What hardware is required to activate application like Cisco Unity Connection ?

               Please I need your help,
What hardware is required to activate application like Cisco Unity® Connection ?
    Thank you

In addition to great reply (+5), basically this is similar to CUCM which you need to have in order to run Unity Connection (or you could have CME).  So, if you have CUCM running it will be very similar concept. If this is new install you want to definitely go the virtual path.

  • Hardware Monitor Setup Freeze (K7T266Pro2) [SOLVED]

    1.Product Type: K7T 266 Pro2 (6380 v2)
    2.BIOS version: AMI V3.70
3.External VGA Type: ATI Radeon VE 7000 AGP 128Mo
    4.CPU Type: Athlon XP 1600+
    5.Memory Type: 2*256 Mo DDR PC2100 PQI
    6.Power Supply Type: Heden PSXA870 380W with -5V output
7.Operating System: Win XP Pro Sp2
    8.Problem Description:
When accessing to hardware monitor setup page in BIOS, I get a freeze that I can olny escape by Ctrl Alt Suppr.
I have made an update of Bios to V3.70 because a new module of memory I have bought make problems. This update do not change anything, so I remove this new module and don't use anymore.
But by updating, my CPU clock down to 1050 Mhz instead of 1333Mhz, due to FSB set to 100Mhz.
And impossible to access the page to set the parameter at 133Mhz due to a freeze.
How to solve the problem and get back the right configuration I had before ?
I have read that the problem may come from the power supplies that don't have -5V. I don't know what produce my PS, but how to prevent BIOS to check this -5V ?
EDIT : I have check my PS and it produce -5V.
    Many thanks for your hlep.
    Regards.

    Merry Chrismas everydody.
    Back with happy news :
    - I have flash with v3.7 : flash OK
    - Still getting the problem : hardware monitor page setup freeze, and unable to set FSB to 133Mhz and get the right CPU clock.
    So, my solution :
    - Looking for editing the AMI Bios file.
    - I have load v3.70 Bios file in editor, and only change one parameter : I have set not active the -5V check in hardware monitor module.
    - Save my new bios file (called it v3.71)
    - Then, flash with that edited bios file
    - And manage to access the Hardware Monitor Setup page to set the FSB at 133Mhe. No more freeze.
I don't know how to call this type of solution, but it works well.
For moderators, you can modify the subject by adding [solved] if you want.
    Many thanks for everybody.

  • I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

I am putting together a proposal for a Final Cut Pro Workstation to use with a tapeless HD camera.  Can anyone suggest the best camera (in the 5-10,000 dollar range) ?  What hardware and software should I include in the package?

This is quite an open suggestion, but here are some ideas which might get you started.  There are good HD cameras in your price range from Sony, Panasonic and Canon (and maybe other manufacturers). Tapeless formats vary.  I have only worked with Sony XDCAM which seems pretty good to me.  File sizes for material shot at 35MBS are not too huge and, with the free Sony transfer and conversion programme, are easy to bring into the computer via USB direct from the camera or from a fairly inexpensive converter.  The Sony XDCAM EX3 can produce results well up to broadcast quality.
As to hardware, you'll need a powerful MAC - iMac, Macbook Pro or MacPro with 4GB or more of RAM and a good video card.  Softwarewise, FCPX is quite a bit cheaper than FC Studio 3 and of course it's 64bit and can make better use of multi-core machines than FCP7.    It's also designed to handle HD formats with less hassle than FCP7 and is matched to the latest versions of Motion and Compressor.   But you'd probably be wise to search reviews of FCPX before you make your choice - it has some issues.
A good HD monitor will be essential and, for colour correction etc, you may want to consider a second monitor or HD TV foe editing. ( A MacPro is generally the best machine to connect a second monitor to).
This should give you a good editing system, but there are many other things you could add (Photoshop, professional sound monitors, etc)
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • New Install - What hardware will I get?

We're moving to Pittsburgh and have an install date of 8/6. I want to do my homework and see what TV "should" be connected to what device. If there are any gotchas on setting up my home network, etc... So any ideas on what hardware I'll get?
If it matters I ordered the FiOS Triple Play with Ultimate HD, Digital Voice and 35/35 Internet. We picked the Multi-Room DVR package with one DVR and two Set Top Boxes.
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place...

  • How do I tell what hardware components I have in my dv4t?

I have a Pavilion dv4t-4100 and the hard disc crashed. I've installed a new hard drive and OS, but I don't know which drivers I need to download for my network adaptor and other hardware components where there are several choices of drivers and components on the download drivers support page.
I'm hoping there is a way to determine what hardware I have without disassembling my notebook.
Or perhaps I could just download all of the drivers and Windows will choose the correct ones for the various hardware components?
    Thanks for any help!
    This question was solved.

We would need your precise model number to provide you with specific information about your hardware unless you can give us a bit of other information. What Windows version did you install? 64 or 32 bit? You can try Windows Update and it will usually provide workable drivers for most components or you can just open Device Manager and find all the devices with errors (no driver) and post the hardware ID for each and we will link you to the drivers. This shows how to find hardware ID in Windows 7 Device manager:
    http://www.technize.info/3-ways-to-find-unknown-device-drivers-in-windows/
Post back with Device IDs and we will find you drivers.

  • What hardware works with Logic

Hi all! I've been a relatively happy Pro Tools user for quite a while now and know my way around it pretty well. I've been using LE 6.4 on OS 10.3.9 and 5.1.1 on 9.2.2 with a Digi 001 as hardware. Though I'm happy with Pro Tools I keep reading about Pros who compose in Logic...Gareth Jones, Depeche Mode, Alan Wilder, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys....and then bring the tracks into PT for mixing. So I've always wondered about doing this...adding Logic to my system. I tried a version of Logic a bunch of years back....Logic VS, a horrible program that was supposed to work with Roland DAWs, but really didn't. I swore I'd never use Logic again, but that was before apple bought it.
But what hardware does todays Logic work with? I'm pretty sure I can't use my Digi 001 to record into Logic because of Digidesigns' proprietary scheme. I am NOT using the Mac audio in as a DAC. So what would be my options?

    Hi Gothboy,
As long as you have a working Digidesign Core Audio hardware driver, you can use your Digi001 as a front-end for Logic Pro. Make sure you visit Digidesign's website and download any patches / updates that might help. Better yet, try to upgrade to a digi002 when you can (I have one for over three years running Logic Pro)
PS I have worked with DM...they rule...and I do know what they used. You are correct in that they compose in Logic, and mix in PT. Except for the last album, which was all PT. But Martin loves Logic, and still uses it now.
    Cheers

  • What hardware is comparable to use with adobe programs, screens, cpu, hard-drives, printers, mouse,

What hardware is essential to use with these types of programs?  video, keyboard, cpu, printers, mouse, etc.  C5 program I am interested in.

While some people on this forum use CS5, the forum itself is devoted to Lightroom, which isn't at all the same, even though it has Photoshop in its name. You'd probably have much better luck by asking your question on one of the Photoshop forums.

  • Final Cut Pro X - What's your setup?

I'm running FCPX on my MacBook Air 13 Ultimate and everything runs fine except the background rendering kinda causes my system to chug a little. Whats your setup, I'm curious to know what eveyone's setup is and how is FCPX running on your system?

    This is my mid-2010 MBP
I'm not sure what you mean by "chug a little", so just to make sure we're all on the same page:
    0) turn background render off (just in case)
    1) new project
    2) add to storyline a 30 second generator (organic)
    3) attach to the generator clip a title, with build in / build out that is also 30 seconds (Continuous)
    4) with you left hand Render All (shift+ctrl+R), and with your right hand press Start on your stop watch (very scientific)
    5) report back your results
In my case, that's a 10 MINUTE ordeal; which is to say that composting an animated title costs me my sanity.

  • IMac experiencing kernal panic.  What hardware could be at fault?

My 21 inch iMac running Snow leopard with a 1.83 Ghz processor is not functioning properly.  I purchased the computer used from a local university and after a few months of running Leopard it displayed the gray kernal panic screen that says "you need to restart your computer".  I wiped the hard drive and did a fresh instal of Leopard and upgraded to Snow Leopard.  Computer ran fine for a month or so and is now malfunctioning again.
    Symptoms are:
    1. Programs crashing - spontaneous crashing during use or occasionally complete failure to open a program before it quits.  Restarting the computer usually fixes this problem
    2. Hardware (iSight camera and airport card) not recognized.  Restarting the computer sometimes fixes this problem.
    3. Boot failure - either sits at the screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel or gets stuck at the first blue screen.
    4. Computer has not yet displayed a kernal panic screen since reinstalling the OS
Any ideas for what hardware/software might be at fault or a course of action to further diagnose the problem?  Local IT department just gave me the run-around.

  • What hardware ?

    Hi all,
I am working on a new experimental set up for my thesis and I want to control
the whole process using LabView 8.
The set up has two chambers each one connected to a capacitance manometer
    (http://www.mksinst.com/cgi-bin/product.exe?pid=626a) and,  4 solenoid
valves (http://www.mksinst.com/pdf/HPSEMCvDS.pdf) to control the flow.
My goal is to open the valves when the pressure reaches a certain value in each
    chamber using LabView.
So far I have ordered the valves with 24v DC solenoids (1.3 A initial /
0.3 A running) and an external power supply for all of them. For the
capacitance manometers I have ordered a Digital Power Supply
    (http://www.mksinst.com/pdf/Pdr2000ds.pdf) with an Rs-232 interface.
I am very new to LabView and I am not an electrical engineer.
    I don't know what
hardware I need to connect the valves and the manometers to the PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    George.

    Hi Gef,
I've used NIs ER-8 (and ER-16) relay boxes, and your current-requirements are within specs for these relays.  Don't know how long they last when switched at 1.5 amps...   You can control the ER-8 with an inexpensive DIO board (DIO24?) - anyway pick the DIO board from the options listed on the ER-8/16 page.
It looks like you may want some analog-input (voltage measuring) capability for your pressure-transducers(?)  If so, you might do both DIO and analog-INs with one multifunction DAQ board... and a mess of accessories for cabling multifunction board to the ER-8 as well as an anaolg break-out box.  I wouldn't do that !  If you need analog-INs, I'd advise a seperate analog board (w/breakout box) and cable straight to the BO-box!
    Cheers.
When they give imbeciles handicap-parking, I won't have so far to walk!
