What has happened to iTunes?

Every Tuesday for years I have been checking out all the new stuff on iTunes. Well, today I started my usual review, and I found a real problem. Up until today, I have always been able to go to the "Just Added" section and look at all the new albums posted by genre. That is a very useful feature. For example, you could just go to the jazz section and see every jazz album added to iTunes since the previous week. However, today I received a rude awakening. That feature is gone and has been replaced by something I barely recognize. Now, if you hit the jazz genre under "Just Added", it gives you about 10-12 thumbnails of new albums. If you try to go to page 2 or 3, etc., it instantly returns to "All Genres". In other words, there is no way to see all of the new albums in any one genre or even in all of them. If you go to the cover page and just look at all the new music, it does not begin to include all the albums that have been added since the previous week in all genres. This is a radical change to a great store and a huge disappointment. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED, AND WILL THESE CHANGES BE PERMANENT?

Here's the response I received from tech support:
Hi John,
Thank you for contacting iTunes. RJ here from iTunes Customer Support. How are you doing today, John? I hope the day is treating you well.
It is my understanding that you would like to have the "Just Added" feature added back to the iTunes Store. I can certainly understand your need to have this resolved as I know your time and money are both important.
John, I have checked your account and it is showing here that you've been an Apple customer for a long time now. And as such, we value your input and any suggestions that you may have to help iTunes or Apple serve you better.
To help you with this, I have made and submitted a report regarding your concern. I also encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit your comments or to have the feature reinstated. Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide feedback about iTunes than the people who use it.
It is obvious this support rep did not understand my original message. I sent a response to clarify it. I hope somebody has a clue at iTunes. I think they have screwed up a mighty good thing.

  • What has happened to iTunes DJ in version 11?

    I just upgraded to iTunes version 11. It is very different then earlier versions and iTunes DJ appears to have been removed. This is what I use exclusively to play music so I am disappointed to see it gone. Does anyone know of an equivalent feature in version 11? If not, is there any way to go back to version 10?

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57556548-37/7-features-apple-killed-off-in-itu nes-11/  including DJ.  They replaced it with "up next" which many don't see as a substitute.

    Downgrading is up to you:
    =Downgrading from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7=
    You may be able to go back with Time Machine but this may involve restoring other items too (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441404).  Alternatively:
    Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens.
    Quit iTunes.
    Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at:  http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
    Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files.   See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20475394.  Do steps 3 and 4.  Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential.  Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.
    Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7.  Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved.  Two ways to do this are:
    1.  Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6
    2. Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:
        Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/
        After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7.  I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:
    AirTrafficHost.framework
    CoreFP.framework
    DeviceLink.framework
    iTunesAccess.framework
    MobileDevice.framework
    After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl"  and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since.  See:

    Alternatively, check https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441424 which requires you have a Time Machine backup (though possibly if you remove the newer version of these files old ones may be installed with the iTunes 10.7 installer - untested).  A  variant of this is at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20448184

    Since the recent update Itunes fails to start with no error messages. What gives?

    the second article did offer a suggestion that SEEMS to have helped ::crosses fingers:: - an about:config, resetting of the preferences for images. we'll see how long it lasts. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the suggestion, the article wasn't one i'd found while searching for troubleshooting info.

    Using iPhone/iPad Recovery Mode

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school enviroment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
  • I use to stream music from my iphone to my airport express via my stereo, it no longer is an option on the radio app. what has happened?
    Not sure what has happened to my airport expres but I can no longer stream music to my stereo via the TuneIn Radio app or using my macbook pro, need help in fixing this problem.
    UPDATE:
    I have been stress testing StreamToMe in the house and  "out in the wild" and it is working very well.  There are one or two clunky steps in order to switch from the in-my-house wifi to the cellular network but it's just better (to me) than uploading about 750 GB of music that is restricted by iTunes rules and limitations to "the cloud".   The major advantage is that this solution plays more file formats than iTunes will.  In addition, I can access music files anywhere on my mac - even if they are not in my iTunes library. Playlists from iTunes are available, too.
    I am not associated with this company in any way.  I am astounded that there are not more solutions available and that there are not more people discussing this issue.  Subscription models like Spotify are great and the cloud is fine for those that don't have large libraries  But when I have a humongous library and I don't want to move it around up and down to someone else's server or pay to access it after I have already paid for it I find the lack of ease of doing this baffling.
    I hope that this info can help someone looking for information relating to this type of solution...
    Pete D.
    I believe apple no longer accepts debit cards in some countries. Try a credit card instead.  Go to settings/iTunes and App Store tap on the ID then then tap on view apple ID and log in then tap on account info and have a look at the billing options available to you
    My iphone 4S has gone dead - what has happened?
    Try to press at the same time the "home button" and the "sleep wake button". After a few seconds it will reboot your iPhone. If not, your iPhone probably has a hard- software problem., Attempt to connect it to Itunes as a recovery mode restore. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
  • I don't know what has happened but I can't open iPhoto. When I try to open it I receive a caution "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." How do I solve this??!!
    I don't know what has happened but I now can't open iphoto. I get a caution when I try which says the iphoto library is locked! It was working perfectly fine this afternoon until I tried to upload some photos from my camera and my computer started to run very slow and wasn't recognising my camera. I tried to quit iphoto and then when I came back in to it, this was the message I received. As far as I am aware I didn't alter any settings or put on any locks. Please help!!
    What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD
    Thanks lllaass, but I am not computer literate and do not understand exactly what it is I am supposed to do.  All of my photos were stored on Microsoft Windows Live Photo Gallery.  When I now access the gallery the only thing that is there are the folders with the title of the folders.  The pictures that were in those folders are now gone. I can no longer access them on my IPOD either.  My photo library on my IPOD is now empty.
    Thanks again for your help.
    I am not able to open iCloud from my settings, Sirs says I don't have iCloud installed what has happened? I have an email saying my device can't be backed up because my I cloud is full, and telling me to go to settings to manage it, but my iCloud button is in light grey instead of black and unresponsive.
    Go to Settings>General>Restrictions>Accounts (near the bottom) and set this to Allow Changes.  You will then be able to access Settings>iCloud again.
    Greetings,
    I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
    At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
    The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
    I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
    You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
