What has happened to 'select' in Mountain Lion?

I have two problems with selecting in Mountain Lion.
1. I can no longer drag select on Mail and other rpograms. I have to do a cmd A and then delete in the trash, for instance. I used to beable to select all of the items with a mouse drag.
2. Even when I do a cmd A, if I then right click to open, for instance, I find that it has selected the one item that is under the mouse pointer rather than all of the selected items.
Is there somewhere that I can put back these to the old way?
David

I'm experiencing the same problem 1 in Mountain Lion's Mail, but not in other apps (tested the Finder and Contacts) where click+drag still works as it used to selecting adjacent items in the list.
It seems that in Mail the setting of verticalMotionCanBeginDrag has been changed to YES.
As for point 2 I can't confirm your report. I can open all selected items with right click.
Best,
Erne.

  • What has happened to snooze in mountain lion?

I know this might look trivial, but my life runs on alerts and reminders. In OS X 10.6 (Leopard) alerts would popup with an option to set the snooze for differnt time periods. This was very useful as I could dismiss certain reminders for hours, days or weeks. Mountain Lion seems to have lost this very functionality.
I've looked in settings, but can see no way to add this functionality back in. If it is possible can someone advise how to do it. If it's not possible, can Apple please look at adding it back in. All the snoose button needs is a little drop down with snooze delay options.
    Thanks

No there are no jokes here. This is just broken software.
One way to work around this stupid change would be to set a double reminder. Let's say I have the yearly service for my car scheduled 4 weeks from now. I could then add one reminder for the day before so I remember that tomorrow is the day. And I could add one reminder that reminds me the morning after to drive to the garage (to avoid remembering it on the high way to work).
So far so good. Now I have a double reminder.
When the first reminder pops up 4 weeks has gone with an infinite number of other reminders and iCal events in between. I have no idea at this point if I added a second reminder for the morning after. My memory is not that good unfortunately.
So at this point I have three choices.
    A) Hit snooze until I break down in a psychosis
    B) Click the Go away button hoping I will be reminded the next morning.
    C) Double click the **** notice and make sure in iCal.
None of this is of any Apple standard at all. It's rubbish.
If they decided that we should use multiple reminders they must of course show this information on the notice that pops up. Like this:
    Take the car to service
(Next reminder will be at 8 AM)
But they didn't include this either.
    Rubbish.

Front Row has been dropped from Lion. Other posters have reported success in copying the Front Row application from a Snow Leopard system and having it work, but there may be undiscovered issues.

  • What has happened to iCal in OS X Lion?

I use iCal for all my events and since upgrading to Lion I have been experiencing majorproblems:
When double-clicking on an event to open it up, sometimes the event appears for a fraction of a second and disappears.  A further double click is then required to open the event.
If I use copy and paste to duplicate an event, the pasted event will go to the date where it was copied from not the date where the mouse pointer is located.  If I paste an event into a different month, the event goes to the same date as the original (but in the new month), not the date where the mouse pointer is located.
I have had problems with events that have disappeared after they have been created on my iMac.  The events can be seen in my MobileMe account, on my MacBook, on my iPhone, on my iPad and even on my PC where I share calendars in Outlook.  But they do not show on the iMac where the event was created.
I use several calendars, when events are copied and pasted, the original calendar sometimes changes.
I have noticed that a single click on a date in the month or week view no longer highlights that day.
None ofthese problems existed with OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard.  What has happened to iCal in OS X Lion?
    Please help.

  • Hi after upgrading to mountain lion my mail rules keep disappearing this has only happened since i installed mountain lion.

Hi after upgrading to mountain lion my mail rules keep disappearing???  this has only happened since i installed mountain lion.

I had Mountain Lion on two Macs. Mail rules were set up on a third Mac running Lion.  I migrated everything on the Lion Mac across to a new iMac running Mountain Lion so now I have Mail rules on a Mountain Lion Mac.  At least I should have. Several times a day the rules disappear.  I assume this is iCloud synching messing up.  I keep re-entring the rules but they vanish again and I'm getting tired of the game.
Large chunk of my Safari bookmarks bar also disappear at random intervals.  It seems that iCloud can handle two Mountain Lion Macs on the same Apple ID, but can't cope with three.

I am using Mavericks. In Mail I had a list of VIPS and used it extensively. Now it has disappeared and VIPs on the menu bar is faded. There is nil response to VIP in help. Can you tell me what has happened?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/VIPSenders.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

All of a sudden our fairly new Air's memory is almost full. The disk utility lists almost 50 GB as "Other". What has happened to our memory? I am new to Apple products.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
When it comes to clearing space on a drive, you have to decide how much to clear.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Although you may be told by other contributors to this site that you should keep some fixed percentage (such as 10% or 15%) of the space on the boot drive available, that advice has no basis in fact as far as I can tell. The amount of available space you need depends on your usage pattern. I don't know how much you should have, and I don't make recommendations based on what I don't know. It should certainly be more than 9 GB.
If your data collection is growing quickly, then, depending on the size of the startup volume, you may need more than 10% available space in order to avoid the risk of filling it up, which can lead to a boot failure. If your data is relatively static, you may need less than 10%. I've seen no evidence that there's a loss of performance when available space falls below any threshold higher than the one Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
    About local snapshots
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then drag or copy — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • If I buy a MacBook pro now, what will happen with it once the Lion OS makes it's appearance? Will I need to buy a new one again?

If I buy a MacBook pro now, what will happen with it once the Lion OS makes it's appearance? Will I need to buy a new one again?

Lion will run on most Intel machines. It will not run on the following machines:
MacBook Pro (sold before October 2006)
    MacBook (sold before November 2006)
Mac Mini (sold before August 2007)
    iMac (sold before September 2006)
It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo (or later CPU). Those machines listed above were all Intel Core Duo machines and with the exception of one of the Mac Minis, an Intel Core Solo. So we're talking 4+ year old machines. I have not tested Lion on a machine with anything less than 2GB of RAM.
Wikipedia has a pretty good public summation of what's known so far and it's quite accurate - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Lion
The biggest thing of note so far is that you cannot install/run Rosetta. Which maybe problematic for some users.

  • I don't know what has happened but I can't open iPhoto. When I try to open it I receive a caution "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." How do I solve this??!!

I don't know what has happened but I now can't open iphoto. I get a caution when I try which says the iphoto library is locked! It was working perfectly fine this afternoon until I tried to upload some photos from my camera and my computer started to run very slow and wasn't recognising my camera. I tried to quit iphoto and then when I came back in to it, this was the message I received. As far as I am aware I didn't alter any settings or put on any locks. Please help!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards

While I don't use a Mac, I belive you connect the device to the computer via USB and then import the file using a file utility similar to what you do when you import digital pictures. I'm guessing that the Mac has something like this?

  • I use to stream music from my iphone to my airport express via my stereo, it no longer is an option on the radio app. what has happened?

Not sure what has happened to my airport expres but I can no longer stream music to my stereo via the TuneIn Radio app or using my macbook pro, need help in fixing this problem.

    UPDATE:
I have been stress testing StreamToMe in the house and  "out in the wild" and it is working very well.  There are one or two clunky steps in order to switch from the in-my-house wifi to the cellular network but it's just better (to me) than uploading about 750 GB of music that is restricted by iTunes rules and limitations to "the cloud".   The major advantage is that this solution plays more file formats than iTunes will.  In addition, I can access music files anywhere on my mac - even if they are not in my iTunes library. Playlists from iTunes are available, too.
I am not associated with this company in any way.  I am astounded that there are not more solutions available and that there are not more people discussing this issue.  Subscription models like Spotify are great and the cloud is fine for those that don't have large libraries  But when I have a humongous library and I don't want to move it around up and down to someone else's server or pay to access it after I have already paid for it I find the lack of ease of doing this baffling.
I hope that this info can help someone looking for information relating to this type of solution...
    Pete D.

Thanks lllaass, but I am not computer literate and do not understand exactly what it is I am supposed to do.  All of my photos were stored on Microsoft Windows Live Photo Gallery.  When I now access the gallery the only thing that is there are the folders with the title of the folders.  The pictures that were in those folders are now gone. I can no longer access them on my IPOD either.  My photo library on my IPOD is now empty.
    Thanks again for your help.
