What has Snow Leopard done to iPhoto?

I've recently installed Snow Leopard & have yet to see any great differences or benefits.
The big problem I am having is that iPhoto is incredibly slow now in panning zoomed images.
e.g. I open an image in full screen and zoom in (which is slower than previously) and then use the multitouch function on the touchpad to pan... And I am presented with lag which appears to be buffered - i.e. I move my fingers in a certain pattern and then remove them & the software gradually follows this path with a lengthy delay.
Any ideas or help?

I know what you mean. Ever since I purchased Snow Leopard, my Mac has been acting un-Mac like. iPhoto hangs during simple operations. I've had to do a forced shut down. This is getting a little irritating, I hope they resolve these issues soon.

My Mac has Snow Leopard 10.5.8. I want to install Mtn. Lion. Apple says I first need to install SL 10.6.8 and that it'll be available at Software Updates. It isn't (and I've installed every software update I can pull up.) Now what?

10.5.8 is Leopard. 10.6.x is Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

  • Mac has snow leopard and does not boot has grey screen

IMac has snow leopard and does not boot has grey screen

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

I got a refurbished mac yesterday, and it disent have the latest osxlion software, and i think it has snow leopard. When i clicked software update it says my software was up to date. Please help me get it freee, because i was supposed to.

Apple includes Lion with its refurbished products. What you bought was a used computer. The best course of action is to try to get your money back and buy a factory-certified refurbished computer. Otherwise, you are likely buying someone else's problem.

  • Can I import iWork from my Mac, which has Snow Leopard, to my MacBook Air, which has Mountain Lion?

Can I import iWork from my Mac, which has Snow Leopard, to my MacBook Air, which has Mountain Lion?
I would appreciate any advice on the intricacies of operating with Snow Leopard on my main computer and Mountain Lion on my MacBook Air.

I'm not sure there are any intricacies except you can't use iCloud to keep the two things synced. It would be mostly contacts, Safari bookmarks, Calendars, notes, etc.
Also, iCloud allows saving iWork documents in the Cloud, so you can access them on both systems. That would not be available for the old Mac.
The two OSes are similar enough that it wouldn't be too difficult to work between the two, but there will be differences in using the Finder (contextual menu changes)
I thought I would have more, but I've been off Snow Leopard for so long now, I'll leave this for someone who is currently operating like that or recently switch to Mountain Lion from SL.

  • Windows 7 computer, and my macbook pro on snow leopard don't see each other?

My windows 7 computer, and my macbook pro on snow leopard don't see each other. I have configured the windows section under the network prefrences with the required information, and still no luck. Does anyone have any sugestions for me?

Shouldn't they see each other and let me use each of their files?
Please pardon the obvious here, but have you checked to make sure that you have enabled the File Sharing option on both computers? You may have already done this, but your post did not mention this, so we can only go with the info that we have.
If you have not enabled File Sharing, I can't help on Windows, but on your Mac...
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Sharing
Enter a check mark next to File Sharing
I imagine that there is a similar setting for the Windows machine
It would be a good idea to power cycle your entire network as well to make sure that the network is sequenced correctly. Power everything down, order is not important.
Start your modem first and let it run a moment by itself
Then start your main router the same way
Continue starting each device the same way until everything is powered back up

I should just change the OS and leave all your apps and data alone.  That said, if any of your apps are old and use Rosetta (ppc apps), they won't run under Mountain Lion.
Make sure you take a good Time Machine or Clone backup before you convert.

  • Has Snow Leopard made this so good, I don't have to do it?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 2.66 running the latest FCPro and Snowie. I also have "Menu Meters" up in the menu bar. I've noticed when editing in FCPro 7 (7.01) and I render scenes, sometimes menu Meters (both of them) show 75 - 90% of the processors are busy working . . . rendering!
GOOD! That's what their supposed to do. But sometimes, and I can't find the pattern here . . . I'll render something and the processors are only working at 30%. I'm wondering . . . 'why don't you 2 work a little harder so this'll render faster?!!" I do have monimal programs running in the background, MAIL, maybe Preview, QT - that's it. Nothing major to distract the rendering "bosses"!
I have not played with QMaster on the MacBook Pro as I read somewhere that with "only" 2 processors, it won't do anything with a MacBook Pro.
So I guess my question is . . . why does the rendering processes frequently change so much- using more or less of my processors? Can QMaster (if I know how to set it up, which I don't really) "order" the rendering machine to work 'harder' and faster? (At the downside of multitasking slower, which I don't care about, because I'm not doing it anyway.)
OR . . . is Snowie very intelligent about my FCPro program and does Snowie "intelligently" automatically control the processors to run at their max and I should do nothing? I wish this were right, but then why do menu meters show such varied performance?
Lastly, I have a Mac Pro Tower 8 core 2.8 gig also. I've tried playing with Qmaster on that one - it's menu meters show the same "varied" performance levels - but nothing I do with Qmaster predictable effects its "use" or "control" of rendering or compressing - it seems Snowie just seems to most of the time keep them at 60% or higher. (But I really don't know what I'm doing . . . so I might be setting QMaster all wrong! I seem to lay off it now)
Is Snow Leopard doing such a good job controlling performance, I should keep my hands "OFF" and just let everything run automatically? It seems sometimes in compressor, while compressing . . . it runs all 8 cores at 75% or so much of the time - but sometimes not!
Some of the articles I're read on QMaster are dated before Snowie, so can I rely on those stories? Or have things change now.
Thanks - I always learn a lot from these chat boards, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's wondered about this. (I hope!)
    Thank you,
    Larry

  • Snow Leopard computer dead. iPhoto 7 library rescued. How to get it into Maverics iPhoto 9?

    Hello great community,
So I've been running Snow Leopard on my trusty iMac 27 for a long while. iPhoto7, my main app on that machine, now has about 40'000 photos on it, face-recognition done, many pictures are edited, I've rated a large portion of them, etc. You get the picture.
So now the iMac died, completely. I have a backup of the whole system drive (done with "SuperDuper!"), as well as a copy of only the "iPhoto Library", currently lying on my NAS.
    My questions are simply these;
Can I import that library into my brand new Macbook Pro, which is running Maverics?
I've read that you need to update the library with the http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1523 iPhoto Library updater. Can I do that on the library wihtout having iPhoto7 running? (in other words, can I use my Maverics-laptop to apply the Library Updater-tool to the iPhoto-library lying on my NAS?)
I have "accepted" iPhoto in the App-store which I read was important somehow, what else kind of preparations do I need to make?
Thanks so much in advance, sorry if I'm rambling I haven't posted all that much before. But these pictures... they're very important to me.
    Cheers,
    // AvH

    1. Get the Library off the NAS. That's first.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
    2. Don't import anything. Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums,
Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    3. Yes, you can run the updater on the new Mac without installing iPhoto 7.
    4. Once you accepted the app it was downloaded and installed on your machine.

  • Have MobileMe account, have 2008 iMac, have rosetta apps, have snow leopard, don't want Lion, have to have iCloud after June?

    Hello All,
I have a MBP running Lion and its fine. I have an iPhone 4, iPad, and a family pack MobileMe account. I have a 2008 iMac that has Final Cut Pro and several other rosetta apps. The iMac is running snow leopard and I don't have any issues to complain about. Since I will be forced to move to iCloud in June if I choose to keep my account I am trying to figure out how to procede with my iMac. I find it annoying that Apple is in a sense forcing MobileMe subscribers to purchase an OS update (Lion $69.00) or at worst a newer computer (Lion will not run on pre-core 2 duo) if we want to "sync" our devices and continue to pay for mobileme services. On top of that, by forcing people to update to Lion to get iCloud, they are forcing people to lose support for any rosetta applications that they have an investment in.
I know about the rosetta install on Lion trick - (installing rosetta on a Lion machine from a snow leopard disc). I was lucky to have a snow leopard disc, so I could install rosetta on my MBP to have support for Final Cut Pro 6.
So, is there any hope of sync services with snow leopard on my iMac while moving my family MobileMe account to iCloud? So far, there seems to be alot of problems with iCloud syncing from what I have read. So in order to keep everything in sync (contacts, iCal, mail, etc.) with iCloud on all my devices (iPhone, MBP, iMac) I will have to buy a Lion install drive for the iMac and re-install rosetta and re-install all those applications as well....
    Any thoughts ?

Consider running your Adobe and AppleWorks software in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed in Parallels in Lion or Mt. Lion:

  • Appleworks & Snow Leopard don't mix...

The only reason I'm posting here is because after trying to post the question below on the Appleworks forum, I was told by an individual there, that my question would probably stand a better chance of being answered here:
Very recently, I had to do something with Appleworks and when I clicked on the app, it kept quitting. Up to this point it was working fine. I dumped the AW app in my and the folder in the applications folder. When I click the installer to install from the cd, the same message comes up.  When the image below comes up on my computer and I try to send a report, I can't because there is no send button anywhere.  I have pasted only some of what the message I get says, because it's too long to post the whole thing here.  Would someone here kindly let me know why the app is doing this?  Thank you in advance for any insight.  -K

The article was subtitled within the web page as being a macfixit item, in the cnet page where you'd gone to see the link to get that item. So I asked to confirm, while also I went into the article again to check the link, too. Some older articles have links that may be to third-party archives, or to older or perhaps defective material; so I double check and search out a trusted source or one with great references if third party.
Article name, reads: rosetta broken in os x 10.6.8 after security update | MacFixit - CNET reviews
In this story a second page link off-site seems to be broken, that had gone to a patch that purportedly fixed an issue the software update for Snow Leopard allegedly caused Rosetta users. So that part is gone now and unavailable for testing. The author of the main MFI CNet page is a contributor in ASC discussions.
The next set of possibilities would include the primary one: to make a complete backup to a capable externally enclosed hard disk drive, the kind with suitable housing that supports Mac OS X and system boot clones. And carbon copy cloner utility. And a mercury enclosure from OWC online.
Then you could do an erase and install of your computer's hard disk drive; perhaps while booted from the Installer DVD, the option in Disk Utility to 'secure erase' and have it over-write the drive with a single pass, would be OK. That would require the drive to be reformatted, however, prior to the new installation. Or just an 'archive and install' so you'd get a new system folder. But that can be too patchy to figure out what was missing to get done.
The secure erase - and - the erase and install are not both necessary, yet those of us who've had issues with older hard disk drives and possible sector errors or corruption, would overwrite the drive with zeros, then reformat, prior to an all-new installation from scratch. But have a bootable backup clone on an external drive that has been tested to work with the computer and OS X. This actually would be a preventative measure.
Getting the parts together ahead of trouble and setting out to do that, make a clone of a healthy OS X system that is installed and updated in the computer, is a task. The job includes knowing or learning how to do the clone, not stopping at first minor issue and thinking the process did not work, etc. And to get correct hardware that can work with a boot clone in OS X and also run on its own power supply are important details.
    {You cannot drag an installer from a media DVD or CD into a system and have it do anything. The installer has to run and put the parts in the correct places. If you used Pacifist to extract the parts, they would be available on the desktop or in folders you could see, and then it could help install them from there. If the Mac OS can see the installer disc and files that exist in there, the Pacifist can find and take them apart, and install the part you need without having to run the DVD's installer.}
With a back up of the computer so your works are not lost, then a rebuild of a working operating system could begin. However there probably are items in there you installed that contributed to the issues you face, and if you knew what they were, it may help; with those that could be removed solving part of the problem. But what.
I suggest you re-organize the issues in this case and present them in a new topic thread, in hopes of additional input to resolve them; since a solve or partially solved topic gets few or no more helpful ideas.
As far as AppleWorks installer discs, you may need to try & find a nearly last version DVD, for use in Mac, that would have been available to early Intel-based Mac users, and that would've had 'universal' or dual installation for Intel-based Mac and powerPC based Mac.
I was able to extract Appleworks 6.2 from a set of cast-off eMac install-restore discs with Pacifist, and install the application in a G3 white iBook running Panther 10.3.9. Then found the step update to 6.2.9. Among other items, just to say I did it. And several items over the life of Tiger 10.4(.11) and a few in Leopard 10.5. But have not done alot with that utility lately. I still have and use AW 6.2.9.
Sorry to not be of much additional help, least not at a distance.
A new thread and topic is a better idea at this point.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Just had Snow Leopard installed.  Iphoto won't open.  I'm supposed to photograph 300 people on Friday.

I have no idea why Iphoto won't work.  The icon bounces once, and then does nothing although I see the details at the top of the screen.
I've used it extensively since I had Snow Leopard installed last week.  Did not upgrade to iphoto11 after much negative feedback from my photographer pals.
I did notice that when I opened a couple of photographs to edit them that once in a while a green or red background appeared, but it was random and only happened on a couple of photos.
I have tried Shutting Down the computer, force quit iphoto a few times........Nothing.
I am 3 hours away from an Apple store and have the largest assignment of my year in less than 48 hours.
Can anyone help me out?  Many thanks.

Thanks for sharing so much of your life story, though I'm not sure what relevance it has to your issue, which, I believe is that you can't open iPhoto.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Snow leopard update lost iPhoto

    Hi
Sorry but the preamble is a bit long.
My son gave me his mac mini - great. Had installed windows on it instead of snow leopard (why???).
He had bought the Snow leopard update disc - Mac came with Leopard.
    I want Snow leopard.
I inserted the Snow leopard disc and installed it fine.
    Where has iPhoto gone?
I think it's on the original Leopard disc but it's not in the optional instals.
The Mac will not boot from the Leopard disc (I suspect because it's the previous OS).
    Can anyone help?
I realise that I should have installed the original Leopard disc before the Snow Leopard update.
    Thanks
    Chris

I am surprised that you were able to install OS X 10.6 without your system having a previous version of OS X installed - in fact, I thought that was impossible from the upgrade disk.
This is only true for the special Snow Leopard upgrade discs that are not retail products. One example is the white "CPU Drop-in DVD" that came with some Macs manufactured shortly after Snow Leopard was released or still may come with some refurbished older Mac models that Apple sometimes sells. All these Macs originally came with Leopard installed (& that is what their included grey system discs install). The "drop in" disc allows users to upgrade these Macs to Snow Leopard but does require Leopard to be installed first for licensing reasons.
I received one of these discs in the box with the refurbished 2008 20" iMac I bought from Apple. You can't mistake it for a retail disc -- although both are white & have the same Snow Leopard picture on them, the "CPU Drop-in DVD" label & the "not to be sold separately" notice make it clear it isn't a retail product.

  • Will Snow Leopard update from iPhoto '09 to '011?

On my iMac I use iLife '09 and was going to upgrade iPhoto to '011 but it looks from the App Store as though I need OS v10.7.5 whereas I am on 10.6.8.  I know somebody who has the same OS as mine and also runs iPhoto '011 but on v9.2.3.   Will the latest version of v9.4.2 work with Snow Leopard?

What scanner is it? Have you checked the developer's website to see if they offer drivers for Lion or Mt. Lion?
