What have I gotten into? New owner is nervous.
Hello all. Don't actually have my iBook yet, but I just placed an order for a 12 inch with 1.5 gig ram option. Last Apple I used seriously was a IIe. Had a little experience with various Mac desktops over the years, but 'til now I've been a dedicated PC user. Anyway, a guy in my ed admin class has an iBook and I've been fairly hooked on the computer. Plus, when I check prices, it was hard to find a decently built PC notebook that had anywhere near the features for the buck of the iBook. Also liked the portability.
Anyhow, enough rambling. Questions.
Are there any huge blunders that someone making the switch commits that I might avoid?
Where are good places (no Apple stores nearby) to obtain software or hardware?
How diffeent os OS X from Windows? I've used the web browser on a Mac but not much else.
Finally, I ordered a wireless mouse, what other accessories should I conssider?

CompUSA sells apple stuff, at least the one here does. the one here has their own Apple section, they sell the entire line of Mac computers, software, keyboards, mice, ipods, and other extra stuff, even applecare & cases for laptops. that is the only place that i can think of that would sell it - Best Buy up here doesn't. lucky we have an apple store also. you can always order online too. try Amazon, usually decent prices for software. the switch from windows, at least for me, was unbelieveably easy. i've always been a windows user, built my last desktop myself. but, since i got my iBook (14") i haven't used my pc at all - my sister has it right now. i always hated using the macs when i was in high school, that was all pre-OS X though.. we had the eMacs.. i hated it lol but this mac is so much nicer now. if you don't mind the laptop keyboard, then stay with that. i use my iBook as a desktop right now (until i get a mac mini probably) so i have a apple keyboard (usb) and mighty mouse that i use instead of the laptop's keyboard/trackpad. that way i can sit on my bed w/ my laptop display at eye level and can comformtably type on my extra keyboard. so it depends what you will use it for. i do recommend an external hard drive though. firewire in my opinion. if you are like me, you can acquire stuff quickly, and what they come with isn't enough room. i have a 250gb external firewire drive - currently using about 50gb on it - my iBook came w/ a 60gb so you can see how nice it is to have it. they can be pricey, but are worth it - esp for keep backups of stuff (which i do to my external, plus 1-2 dvds)

The iphone is not a backup device. Everything should be on your computer.
Copy everything form your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one. -
I have gotten a new Apple ID because I couldn't get my original Apple ID password to go through. Since then I have looked at all my settings and the Apple ID appears correctly except when I try to do updates and it asks for my Apple ID which is the original one when I first set up the iPad and I can't get the password for and it doesn't show my new Apple ID so I can't update my apps. How do I fix it so I can get my apps updated??
Delete them and then download them from the desired Apple ID. This may require repurchasing paid applications.

New to mac....what have i gotten myself into
i've been on a PC for about 20 years..
is there a website i can go to that does not cost money that will give me some mac for dummies 101?
also, any idea why i can pull things off of my external drive but not add to it?
all of my protools sessions are on that drive as well as about another 140 gigs of free space for storage. i'd hate to not be able to back up files to it.
thanks!!!!!Your external drive must be properly formatted to use with a Mac. If the drive is currently formatted NTFS for Windows, then it is only readable but not writable. If you wish to use the drive on both a PC and the Mac, then you must format it FAT. If you want to use it only on the Mac then re-partition the drive and format it Mac OS Extended.
Partitioning and formatting is done using Disk Utility (Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.) Select Disk Utility Help from the DU Help menu and search for the appropriate term to find articles explaining each. If you plan to change the drive for use with the Mac, only, then you must partition the drive as well as format it:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -
I ordered a WRT54G-TM and got a WRTU54G-TM: What Have I Gotten Myself Into?
I noticed this weekend that T-Mobile was clearing out their variant of the WRT54GS for $20, so I ordered one since I happened to need to replace my aging BEFSR41 (I already have another WRT54G serving as my WAP). I just got notification that T-Mobile ran out of the unit I ordered were out and were giving me a free "upgrade" to the WRTU54G-TM. Any thoughts? I don't have T-Mobile service, I ordered the original router merely because it was on clearance and was suppose to work fine with or without T-Mobile, so now I'm wondering...
How does this unit compare to the more traditional WRT54G-TM? I get the sense that if I'm not planning on using VoIP it really isn't as good, but overall I am just confused.
Thanks!My problems with the WRTU54G-TM have settled down to having some aspect of phone service simply stop working perhaps once every 6 weeks, at which point a reboot of the router "fixes" the problem. I'd like to eliminate that last issue, and I'm hoping there will be a new firmware release soon (January I hope?) that finally gets this resolved. For the most part, though, I'm finding this to be OK.
As an alternative, I'd considering trying T-Mobile's new VoIP adapter that's designed to work with whatever router you *already* have. If I had that, I'd install something like DD-WRT on a WRT54GL model (have to find one with a lot of memory -- most of the newer models have less memory and can only take a reduced version of DD-WRT), or "Tomato" -- there are a couple of alternative 3rd party software packages that turn the WRT54 series routers into very capable, powerful and feature rich devices with far more control than the Linksys firmware currently provides for us.
In the meantime, however, the WRT54GU-TM is pretty stable for me except for the periodic reboot requirement -- good enough so that I can live with it until the next firmware release (assuming it's soon!).

I go to school and I would like to be able to listen to my music on my laptop versus using my iPhone or iPad. Only some of my music had been downloaded and I cannot download the rest. I have authorized my computer through my account several times but I still cannot get all of my music on it. I have the 128GB but storage is not an issue as I use a flash drive (16GB) and I have access to external hard drive (1.5TB). How can I get all of my music to actually download to my MacBook?

In order to list to your music purchased on iTunes on your computer, you will need to first download those songs. To download your previous purchases from the iTunes Store, please follow the directions in the link below.

Make sure your Mac or PC meets these system requirements:
iTunes 10.3 or later
You need iTunes 10.6 or later to download previously purchased movies and TV shows.
iTunes account in a country where iTunes in the Cloud is available
iTunes Store
Open iTunes and go to the iTunes Store.
Click Purchased in the Quick Links section.
Select the content type that you want to download (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books).
Select Not in My Library to view purchased content that isn't on your computer.
Find the item that you want to download. You can browse using the menu to the left. If you have more than 2,000 songs, you'll see Recent Purchases instead of All Songs or Albums.
Click the Download icon next to the item you want to download.
If an item is already in your library, the Download icon won't appear.

Do you have AIM or Jabber Accounts set up as well ?
Are they getting "Messages" ?
In Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage account is the "Enable this Account" box ticked and logged in ?
Do you mean you can Receive iMessages but not Send them ?

After reviewing your post, I believe your device is under Activaltion Lock. The following article will provide you with more information about the feature:
iCloud: Activation Lock
With iOS 7 or later, Find My iPhone includes a feature called Activation Lock, which is turned on automatically when you set up Find My iPhone. Activation Lock makes it harder for anyone to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it’s ever lost or stolen.
With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
Sign out of iCloud on your device
Erase and reactivate your device
Important: Make sure to remember your Apple ID and password, and that your password is unique and secure—someone else shouldn’t be able to guess it. For more information, see the Apple Support article Security and your Apple ID.

i had just gotten a new ipod touch and i had completed all of the mandatory start-up settings and when i plugged it into my computer to sync my music from itunes, a pop up came up and it said, This ipod cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started...what do i do to sync it my itouch?

I have blownout the server and reinstalled the operating system and SCVVM and applied all the current updates to no avail. I have the exact same issue again. The problem seem to be at least on the serface an authority problem because I have no problem creating
new VM via the P2V process on an old Virtual Server running on Win2003R2.
Oh yes I can create new virtual machines on the system in question and move them to the library as was suggested to verify in a Blog post so I am really wondering what the problem is?
Configuration Analyzer Just gave me a warning about reporting not being setup on the VVM which it isn't so no suprise there?

Big Fish Games stop working in Mavericks. What do I do? I have re-installed them and the manager app, and nothing. I have not gotten an answer from Big Fish tech staff. Thought the problem might be with Maverick. all the games worked with Snow Leopard
Any body have this kind of problem. What was done to correct it. . .I can't wait to get a new phone as well. LG Revolution owners should be comped for this phone if Verizon intends to keep them as customers.

Seeing that this has become quite a problem, I need to tell you all about this crap.
I have been forced to buy a new PC, due to the old one breaking down. (Finally, had it for 8 years...)
Now, while I have taken a backup of the iTunes Library, including music, apps, movies etc. And put in the new iTunes folder on the NEW PC, somehow, quite a lot of the music, previousley downloaded from iTunes, have gone missing. It was still on my iPhone, but when I plugged it in to synchronize, they got "kicked out" - and are now no-where to be found. I am quite frankly HIGHLY unsatisfied with this issue, and want to know, if there is a way to redownload my music, without involving iTunes Store Support into it. Mostly, because I think they are quite nice people, but with very limited options when it comes to helping each individual in a way, satisfying enough. I have had previous encounters with them, turning out quite... harsh.
Let me know what you think, and if I should write a formal complaint to iTunes Store.

Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

Thought would have erased with resetting iPadHello, your iPad is 'Activation Locked' as a part of 'Find My iPad'.
Log onto www.icloud.com, go to 'Find My iPhone'. Then select 'All Devices', your old iPad will probably show here, select 'Remove from Account'.
If there is no option to 'Remove from Account' ask the current owner to switch iPad off for a while, and remove from account should show in 5 minutes or so.
