What HDD/DVD player/recorders are available?

I want to record tv shows with a dvd player/recorder that has an hdd.  My old Philips dvr analog one has died.  I have cable tv but I have no cable box, the cable card in the Sony LCD receives the digital channels.  I do not want to subscribe to something like Tivo.  What's out there that can record tv easily?

Is this Toast 7 or Toast 6? I only have 6, and haven’t tried it yet.
Anyway, Disk Utility should work. Create an disk image of a CD onto the HD, then burn that image onto a blank CD. 2 steps, but should still work. Probably only works on single partition disks though. i.e. not those PC/Mac disks.
I haven’t use this software, but found it on my travels. Claims to work on Intel Macs:

    Toshiba & LaCie.
I must have spent ten hours researching this.
What did the manufacturer tell you?
but even VLC wouldn't play it.
VLC plays anything you throw at it.  At least 99.999999%.  What type of file (suffix) is this movie file?  Where did you get the movie from?

You need to determine from the vendor if the player is compatible w/Maverick.  Have you done this yet?  If not, why not?

I'm researching the possibility of using iPads for our school but I need to make sure that we can get the appropriate teacher resources to go along with the textbooks. Where can I find these?

I would contact the publisher of the textbook directly.  Apple is just a store, not a publisher.

  • What free films and programmes are available with Select HD?

I am happy with FIOS, but rather disappointed that many 'free movies' actually are 'free with subscription.' I don't want to click a film and find I'm charged - but what free movies are available to those with Select, where TCM, HDNet, and LMN are not part of our channel lineup?

Not many.  As a rule, if you don't have a channel in your package, the "free" movies aren't free.  You can check available channels at the following link if you haven't already.

  • DVD Player - Where are the language folders located?

In attempting to free-up HD space, I accidently deleted ALL of my languages from the Open Apple-I window of DVD Player. They luckily went to the trash, and I recovered the English.Iproj folder. All I need to do is find a home for it, but alas, even Spotlight will not reveal its location. I might add that I was following a recent MacWorld article!

Control-click it, choose Show Package Contents, and put them into the Contents/Resources/ folder.

  • What standalone DVD player will play meg-4 files/movies? I.e. I want to burn a few of my converted movies onto a DVD disc

Is there a standalone DVD player that will play mpeg-4 files? I convert movies etc so I can put them into iTunes to watch on my iPad, apple tv etc......but want to get a DVD player that will also play those files..... But can't seem to find one.
    Does one exist?
I bought a player from Maplins which said on the front of the player mpeg-4 but doesn't even see the files.....it plays avi movies fine.
    Can anybody help!
    Thanks,

Why does it need to be a DVD Player? Would one of these not be better?

Or one of its competitors. Plays almost any video format you can throw at it, straight from a USB stick or Memory Card (so no burning of disks just to watch a movie once).

  • Ipod too slow when reading video files via DVD player with USB port.

Hi all, this is my first message in this forum.
I've got a DVD player that has a USB port and reads all types of disks. When I use my IPOD 80 GB the files I read are somehow frozen and don't run properly (lack of sync between audio and video, etc). I've got version 1.2.1 and use it in disk mode otherwise the player doesn’t see it. Meanwhile a friend of mine uses it's 60 Gb IPO on the same player, version 1.0 and it doesn't need to go to disk mode, and the player reads perfect from it. Is this a problem of the ipod software version?
Both ipods are in Fat32 format, but in his ipod the partition is set to active. I can't change mine to that, because windows is seeing my IPOD as a removable device, and my friend’s IPOD as a disk.
Hope I haven't been too confusing, and I welcome any help anyone can give.
    Thanks.

Sorry, but I don't even know
what it is you are trying to do. Are you attaching
the iPod to a stand alone DVD player? Are you trying
to export stuff out of the iPod into the DVD player?

Hi, I'm attaching the iPod to a stand alone DVD player, that has a usb input port. And then read video files from it.

  • DVD Player error -69902?

I've successfully played DVDs on my iMac (24" 2.4 GHz Aluminum) -- Front Row works like a charm! However, I've recently encountered a DVD that has issues with my computer:
A couple of weeks ago I received the Beatles' "Help!" two-DVD set in timely fashion after ordering it through Amazon.ca. Unfortunately, although the second disc works perfectly on my computer (a 2007 Apple iMac 24" 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM), the first disc will not play past the FBI warning and the opening page (where Play, Subtitles, Settings, Chapters is located). Whether I use either Front Row or DVD player, the result is the same: when I insert the disc into my computer, I am presented with the error message "Skipping Over Damaged Area". If, in DVD Player, I click on "Title" in order to change chapters, an error message pops up informing me "DVD Player encountered a system error. Error -69902". And in DVD Player, I am informed that this disc contains only one chapter. In any case, when I'm on the Help! opening page & I click on "Play" (in either DVD player or Front Row), nothing happens. No movie. The music keeps looping on the opening page, but not much more than that.
Out of curiosity, I tried playing this same disc on a standalone Toshiba DVD player hooked up to my home TV, and amazingly, the disc plays fine!
After emailing Amazon, I was instructed to return the DVD for a replacement, which arrived in the mail today. Imagine my surprise when the replacement displayed the same error messages! Before I return this disc for a refund, maybe someone can fill me in: what is DVD Player error -69902?

  • DVD Player for 10.3.9

I just installed a Pioneer DVD/Cd burner drive. Obviously, when I installed OSX it did not recognize a dvd player as I did not have one then. I do now. I can't find a DVD player application. The only one I can find on apple.com is the one for Tiger 10.4 which won't work on 10.3.9.
What can I do to see if my new drive will play DVDs?? Is there a player available for my OS??

this link here suggests a dvd player should be available from your panther install disk. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=681746&#681746 did you check? [ 8 ) ]

  • Frame-By-Frame / DVD Player application is missing?

    Hey everybody!
So I finally made the witch and got myself a nice new macbook pro about a month ago! Everything is going well with so far, but I may have just run across a bit of a small problem.
I'm an animator, and I like to be able to study animations frame by frame. I can't really seem to do this in Front Row. Or if I can, I can only go forward frame by frame. I need to go back and forth, one frame at a time. Am I missing a shortcut in Front Row for this?
Furthermore, I can't watch DVDs in front row in any other mode than full screen... I'd rather have it in a small window. This also doesn't seem to be an option with FR.
I would have thought that the program "DVD Player" would help me out, but I can't seem to find it on my computer! So I searched through the site here, and I found an installer - Great! Except that when I run it, I get an error message saying "You cannot install DVD Player on this volume. A newer version of this software already exists on this volume".... But... But... WHERE IS IT??? I've searched my computer for it, but it doesn't show up anywhere. Yet the installer thinks that there's a new version here somewhere.
Anybody have any god ideas as to what's up, or what I can do to watch DVDs in a window (not full screen), frame by frame, back and forth?
    Thanks!
    -Pete

So it seems I fixed most of my problem(s)!
I found a way to extract DVD Player from my install disks (Pacifist). So at least I have that working now. But I still can't frame step backwards... Annoying, but that just seems to be the way, I suppose.
If anybody has any suggestions about working around that problem, that would be greatly appreciated - Otherwise, the full screen and DVD Player problems are resolved.
    Thanks!
    -Pete

  • HT202029 5.1 Setup in DVD Player app

Is there a way to set up the DVD Player App to play the surround mix on a DVD?  Or is it just the stereo version that is available?  I know that there is a 5.1 mix available on the disc.  There is no audio setup menu item on the disc.  I have played it on another app and can confirm that there is a surround mix on the DVD.  But I do not see any setup instructions in the help section.  I have a 5.1 audio interface and it plays in another app with 5.1.  But the picture is stuttering because it's a Blu-Ray app.  I can hear it in 5.1 on the Blu-Ray app but it's in stereo on the DVD Player app.  Features/Audio does not offer 5.1 as an option on the DVD Player app.
I also attempted to set it up according to the instructions on this page:
    support.apple.com/en-us/HT202029
Under preferences/disc setup it says System Sound Output.  The only other option is Digital Input into my TV monitor.  Still playing in stereo.
On a separate note, I am looking for a way to get the digital output of my TV to my interface via the digital outputs, but I will need a converter.  I am using a Apogee Symphony I/O as an interface.

ok for some reason the audio output options under disc setup in the dvd player preferences are now adjustable and I got it to work, but when I tried it before the audio output options were faded, meaning you can't change them for some reason. Oh well, at least it works.

  • Dvd player wackiness

I've been watching movies on my PowerBook ever since I got it, no problems. A few months ago DVD player got buggy. I went through all the maintenance stuff, but nothing helped.
So off I went to the website, and I downloaded the most recent version of dvd player for Tiger.
However, I can't install it. I get the message "newer version of this software already on this computer" -- which, no. It is most definitely not.
Any suggestions on how to make this work?
Thank you for whatever help you can provide.

    The DVD Player blues....
HI Rosina... maybe I can make some suggestions that will help.
To find out exactly what version of DVD Player you are running BEFORE you download an updates, launch DVD Player, in the Menu click DVD Player/About DVD Player. A pane will open and tell you exactly which version is installed.
Now... maybe the DVD Player preferences are corrupted. Locate this file:
com.apple.dvdplayer.plist Navigate here: MacintoshHD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Reboot and then try DVD Player.
And... you are running 10.4.3. You need to update your system. Go to the Apple logo top left of your screen, then click Software Updates. The Updater will scan your drive for possible updates.
And... if all else fails, go here and get Pacifist:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
You can use it to extract software off your Tiger restore disk and reinstall DVD Player. If you do this, after it's reinstalled, don't forget to update to the most recent version 4.6.5.
Now all you need is popcorn!

  • DVD player rewind?

I can't simply fast forward or rewind with the DVD Player. Are those functions not available? If that is the case is there another DVD player that anyone has used before and can recommend? I'm a PC switcher. The DVD player seems like a crappy product as far as I can see. When compared to the products I've used on a PC anyway. Am I wrong?

Try a player called VLC. It's a free download from:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
BTW to fast forward during play in DVD Player, hold down the fast forward button (with the mourse cursor) rather than just clicking on it.

  • DVD Player crashes after drive change

    Hi everyone,
For the last 6 months or so, I've had my ThinkPad T23's Combo drive installed in my Pismo. It's a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-RW that came with the ThinkPad originally, but has recently failed. I took the drive out and reinstalled the Pismo's original DVD-ROM drive, but the result has been that DVD Player now fails to load up when I put in a DVD Movie. Specifically, the player tries to load up, but stops, crashes and closes. I had to use PatchBurn to install the 720, but all related files have now been removed. Incidentally, I had the same trouble with the Combo when I first installed it, remedied by using PatchBurn 4. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
I have no specific fix but here are a few suggestions:
    - If you have an external monitor connected, remove it and test DVD Player.
    - Are you sure the DVD-side of the OEM DVD-ROM drive is sound? These drives are known to fail in various ways. Check its health by booting your Tiger DVD.
    - Make sure you have performed routine maintenance by flushing all the caches; the caches have occasionally caused problems on the Pismo with proper operation of the optical drive.
    - If no success at this point, it is recommended you download to your desktop the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC). Installing the Combo on top of your existing 10.4.8 will often solve various software issues; this Combo also includes the DVD Player.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
I install system updates in a very conservative manner: Run Repair Disk Permissions if you have not done so recently plus Verify Disk; if 'Verify' in First Aid fails, boot to your Tiger DVD and make repairs. A Safe Boot will also make most directory repairs but not all.
Once the HD is healthy, I restart with a Safe Boot/Safe Mode and run the Combo installer. Restart normally and test DVD Player.

  • Invisible Auto Action Buttons not clickable in Apple DVD player

I've put some Easter Eggs in my menus which are invisible and auto-action.
In simulator, you can access them with the controller by pressing a particular arrow button from a particular selected menu item. They are also accessible by clicking directly on them with the mouse.
But in Apple DVD player they are only accessible with the controller; clicking on them with the mouse doesn't work.
Is this just a limitation of Apple DVD player?

If you've set them to be Invisible why would you expect them to be clickable. The whole point surely is that they are Invisible.
