What HDD will work for a MacBook Pro 13" 7.1 Unibody HDD Upgrade?

I am looking at upgrading my HDD and have been reading up on the HDD heights (9mm, 12.5mm etc). Which HDDs will work for my upgrade? I would like to get either a 750GB or 1TB drive. Will the WD Scorpio Blue drives work?
I currently have the Hitachi 250GB SATA 2 3.0gbps drive.

Yes, they have an iffy track record.  Do some exploring and research before criticizing.  Even WD has to post a page on their site listing all their products that are known to have compatibility problems with Macs.
Ironic that OWC sells WD?  Sure, about as ironic as finding food in a supermarket.  The word you wanted was "coincidental."  You have misused "irony." What business did you think OWC was in?  They sell products for Macs, and they don't need to be concerned about honoring the warranties of any product they sell except those exclusively under their name.
I know quite well what prices New Egg offers.  There are other factors when purchasing products besides price.

I have just purchased a Canon Pixma MG2900 printer and need to find a driver for this printer that will work with my MacBook Pro Operating System OSX Version 10.4.11.
I was directed to iTunes PIXMA/MAXI, but it didn't seem to download for me.  It did say that it was for IPads or IPhones, not sure that it's intended for use on a computer.

Probably best to go to a library and submit your resume there.

  • What dongles will work with a macbook OSX 10.6

    Hello.
I have an old Macbook (2006) 13 inch and I have upgraded to Snow Leopard and the system is running OSX 10.6.8 and I am wondering what dongles will work with my Macbook.  I am moving to a studio that doesn't have an internet connection and I think this is the only way I will be able to connect.
    Thanks

I just cleaned the drive with a CD Lens cleaning kit, it looked like an ordinary CD but had two small brushes on it, a small amount of ethanol on the brushes, pop it in your superdrive, DVD's are now recognized
Was just a dirty laser, weird how it wrote CD's and not DVD's though, anyway, problem solved.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • What blank DVD-R will work with a macbook pro and Matshita UJ-857E

Hi in my macbook pro is the factory fitted Matshita UJ-857E superdrive, when I insert a blank DVD-R it spits it out, blank CD's work ok.
I have Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
I have tried three different types of brands including maxell, verbatim and cheap woolworths brand.
I bought an external USB DVD burner and this recognises any DVD-R I throw at it, so I think it can either be a faulty drive or it's a bit fussy about the brand of DVD's it can recognise.
Please can you post the blank DVD's that work on your macbook pro superdrive

  • What wireless routers work with the MacBook Pro?

I have been having problems with my inconsistent D-Link 624 and I realize that I will have to replace it.
I would like to know what routers are compatible with the MacBook Pro. My D-Link worked fine with my iBook but I think it does not work with the Intel binary. Any suggestions?

I had problems with a number of different Linksys routers (dropped signal, couldn't connect to some iChat AV calls, etc). I'd been using some Airport express routers for music around the house, which I switched around a made a primary wireless router and a reange exapnder. I've had ZERO problems since.
BTW, I was having almost identical problems with my PowerMac G5 (with a wireless card).
I'm curious if something in recent upgrades (10.4.7?) has changed the OS's ability to connect reliably with non-Apple routers.
But at least my Apple routers seem to be working very well.

  • WORKED FOR ME : MacBook Pro mid 2010 black screen problem

    Hello
    Good news 'til now :
Like for some mid-2010 macbook pro owners, I started to have a recurrent (daily) problem : when I was using the trackpad to do something in Opera, Safari or QuickPick (Launchpad clone), I had very often seen suddenly my laptop seem to turn off but not really (the screen turned off, no key to bring it back, power button disabled, it was like sleep mode but without typical sleep mode light and with nothing to do to wake it up, even the caps lock key didn't worked anymore). Each time I was forced to turn off by maintaining the power button.
The problem could occur three times a day or more.
    I'm on 10.6.8.
I installed the Video Update 1.0 for mid-2010 macbook pros you can find on the Apple site. It seemed to solve the issue for one day, maybe two but it used to reappear the same way as before. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility changed nothing to that. I disabled hardware acceleration in Opera Preferences, zoom feature in QuickPick, disabled graphics cards switch in OS X Power Saving Preferences. Useless.
Then I remembered I used a software when I encountered other problems with my 2006 macbook pro. It's called Kext Utility (very easy to find on the web). It specifically repairs the kernel files structure and updates the kernel files cache. The problem I describe is actually related to a kernel panic. So I re abled the graphics cards switch and by caution I overwrote the Video Update 1.0 by reinstalling it, the laptop rebooted to finish it, and right after that I launched Kext Utility (it takes about one minute to repair and update). Since that the problem totally disappeared. I don't risk to re abled either hardware acceleration in Opera or zoom feature in QuickPick but I probably will now I know how to get rid of this very inconvenient problem.
Hope it will work for you guys

For those who use QuickPick, I've just reenabled the zoom feature (Preferences > Show/Hide Option) and the problem is back very quickly. It's gone as I disable the zoom again. So I advise you to keep this option disabled if you've got the same problem as me.
I haven't reenabled hardware acceleration in Opera, no problem with Opera up to now.

  • How do I know what battery I need for my MacBook Pro?

Hello, Is there a way to find out what model the battery is that I need for my MacBook Pro without tearing it apart? I have the serial number and also the Hardware UUID, whatever that is. If I have to tear it apart I will, but I'm hoping to keep that to a minimum as I'm afraid to tempt fate!

skink - thanks for the kind words.
Depending on your model (check under the Apple menu, "About This Mac", "More Info...", "System Report..." and tell me your Model Identifier. Mine, for instance, says (under Hardware Overview):
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,2
Depending on your model, a 'good' number of cycles might be as low as 300 or as high as 1,000. But if the condition is "normal," as you say (and as mine reads) you really shouldn't have anything to worry about.
If it's a battery that needs to be replaced by an Apple tech, it's 'built-in,' meaning you can't just turn it over and change the battery (such was the case with my 2006 1,1 model and some models after that).
It's always good to keep an eye on battery health and to use some methods of keeping your CPU load at a minimum when using battery power. Viewing movies, whether in the DVD player or those that are on your computer, will really tax your CPU and result in lower battery life. To maximize your battery life, try to have as few apps open as possible when under battery power - particularly those that drain your CPU. You can keep and eye on this by keeping Activity Monitor, in your Utilities folder, open at all times. If you see a process that's taking 10+% of your CPU load, that's an app you should close or at least keep an eye on - my Firefox browser will sometime get in the 13% range, but I don't worry about that.
Battery use is, for me, primarily about Internet browsing and email. I keep open Firefox, Outlook, Activity Monitor, Word, Acrobat, Word, TextEdit, and a few other small apps and I generally get 7+ hours on battery time.
I would also suggest using two little utilities to keep an eye on battery usage - one is "Battery Health" available at the App Store free. The other is gfxCardStatus which will let you use discrete graphics, changing your GPU to the less intensive processor. It's available at http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus and is "Mountain Lion ready" as of it's latest release.
Good luck - see how many more hours you can eke out of that battery before thinking about having it replaced. As much as I use mine, I know that I'm going to go over the 1,000 cycle mark before my AppleCare expires, so I know that I'm going to have to get it replaced. But for now, I'm getting the advertised hours and am quite happy.
    Regards,
    Clinton

  • What kind of memory works for the MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro ( Mid 2009 ) I would like to know which brands of memory works with my configuration. ( Excluding Apple because it too expensive.) Please list the name of the brands :)

    Crucial http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=CBD603A2A5CA7304
    Corsair http://www.corsair.com/corsair-mac-memory-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-sodimm-memory-ki t-cmsa8gx3m2a106c7.html

  • What do you recommend for me: MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Pro?

I haven't decided what Mac I should buy. It's pretty hard for me. I'm fascinated with the iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. But I'm not sure what Mac is good for me. For now, I use my laptop for web browsing, sometimes photoshop and writing stories on notepad. But I'll probably do more later on such as developing 2D games and making music on GarageBand. I might make my own website with podcasts and possibly take advantage of Mac OS X's DVD creation software. I will also dual boot (Windows & Mac OS X which I'll use the most) and play games on it.
Money isn't a real problem. I only have $1,000 at the moment. But I'm going to get a job soon. I won't buy a Mac until the job is stable.
I don't know what to buy and not sure which one is the best for me. I like all 3 of them! I really like portability because I can take it anywhere. But I already have a notebook (not a Mac). I need a Mac that will last me a couple of years. Again, I'm afraid that newer stuff will come out and my computer will be inferior. lol.
So I'm hoping someone can help me come up with a decision. You guys/gals know more about computers than me. I'm new to Macs too. I became interested in Macs last year when I saw the Power Mac G5. I thought the tower looked awesome and then I started playing around with it.

I've never had an iMac wear out. My last one lasted four years and the guy who bought it from me on eBay reports that his is doing fine. It got HEAVY use in a dusty environment.
And Apple has been refining the iMac for years now. I keep hearing you emphasize durability, so that is why I am pushing it for you. No laptop will last as long. They operate at higher temperatures and take a beating. My Mac Book Pro already lost its back-lighting and has something wrong with the DVD eject feature. All repairable for free with Applecare, which I recommend. But my iMac will outlast my desire to own it, this I know for certain. I have the 20 inch and wish I had gotten the 24. If you're interested in my new 20", I will sell it to you for 1/3 off what I paid for it, and it comes with a transferable 3 year Applecare warranty. This way I could purchase the 24". It hadn't come out when I got the 20".
But first, come to the conclusion that you don't need an Apple laptop. That's the threshold decision.
    Best of luck to you.

  • HDD vs SSD for new MacBook Pro and FCP editing performance

I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro and I'm curious about performance as it relates to large FCP projects. I'm looking to hear from folks who can help me determine if a solid state drive (SSD) would be worth the extra cost. I edit large FCP projects and I'm curious if using a SSD would be the way to go. Will I get better editing performance with a SSD as opposed to the 7200 RPM HDD?
    Thanks!

As a boot drive, SSDs have exceedingly last fast access times, and great data throughput rates. My Crucial SSD has a write read of about 200 MB/s. I can boot in under four seconds, and access apps, and web sites pretty **** fast.
However, beyond this, I don't see any real, substantial or dramatic gains in editing performance at all as a boot drive. I'd save your money on get more RAM, and best CPU and GPU you can afford.
