installation on which one will be more reliable and stable?
As I am choosing which OS will be better as a Server

I don't think XP professional would be recommended as server.
would be better if you use 2000 Server or best if you use 2003 if you like windows environment

this might look very silly question, and every child might know answer, but i would like to ask this question here that
i have oracle 9i release 2 installed on my windows server 2000 and an application is already running, now i want to install oracle 10g on same machine...
but when i try to launch oracle universal installer, it fails to launch it....whay is this so??? do i need to adjust some parameters to install it????
can anyone provide a checklist to check??i have an antivirus installed on machine...
any suggestion will be appreciable

got my answer, you can follow this step.
on windows 2000 server while launching oracle universal installer, due to jre bug (noted in metalink 266617.1 doc and 393070.1) installer CMD prompt launch and disapper in a while... so run following command on command prompt
to resolve the issue.. change directory path according to your directory structure.
change directory to your oracle installation setup.exe directory and execute following command
C:\>\backup\SoftwareBackup\Database10g\database\install\oui.exe -J-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=truethanks and regards

I have installed Oracle 10.1.0.2 on my server ( Windows 2000 server). The procedure of installation goes suitably but during the creation of the base it posts me:

Dim-00019: Error of creation of service
O/S-error OS1387) Impossible to add or remove a member of the local group because this member does not exist
then, I look that the service OracleDBConsole of Enterprise Manager is not created
knowing only SqlPlus goes well.
after the installation, I want to add the console Enterprise Manager while using EMCA then it display this error:
Failure of the configuration Enterprise Manager because: Job_queue_processes must be equal to or higher than 1

First problem: Check the user , which does the installation,
it must be a Local Administrator in order to install Oracle products on a
Windows NT/2000 Server (machine not part of a domain) or it must be a Domain Administrator to install Oracle products on a Domain Controller (PDC or BDC) (machine part of a domain).
Another known issue for this problem is a non-english Windows version,in this case the software should reloaded from OTN, which has a fix.
Second problem: You cannot run emca, BEFORE you have a running database, DBConsole depends on it.

will explain how to install.. however the VMware Workstation product doesn't offer in a supportedway the sharing of two nodes of disks.. there are hacks out there, but they are not very stable. We therefor chose to install two instances on one node to showcase RAC, rather than make it complicated and unstable to use and showcase.
there are also ready made VM's from above page, so u can quickly evaluate it for both Red HAt and SuSE.. when vmware can support such sharing in an easy supported way we might re-evaluate.. until then my personal suggestion is to stick to simple case.. 2 instances on one node.. its easier to copy, snapshot.. etc.

I have installed oracle 10g on win 2000 server with service pack 4 to my home machine but the problem I am facing is that when I start my db on the system my system gets slow it consumes most of the Ram.I alter few SGA parameters in init.ora file but the problem continues to be effect me.I need to get around that problem asap hope you guys help me as u did in past....

If you already have IIS web server running, you need to run the LabVIEW web server on a different port to avoid conflicts. It probably won't start because the port 80 is already in use.
Check options.."Web Server: Configuration" within LabVIEW.

So far no issue.
I need to have a 32bit client installed on the same server to be able to run some applications on the server, but my applications won't start telling me that TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
my tnsnames.ora seem correct both in the db_1\network\admin directory and in client_1db_1\network\admin directory.
both Sqlplus(client_1 10.2.0.1 and db_1 10.2.0.3) return a connection.
I don't know where the problem could be coming from

Running Oracle 10g Express without Web connection.

Hello Oracle Users/Friends
I previously used Oracle 8i on an older machine running Windows 98. No web connections required to run database. Have just installed Oracle 10g Express Edition on newer machine running XP Pro. Suddenly Web connections required for database Homepage etc. All cool. But, I just want to start database without requiring Web connections to practise plsql stuff.
It is probably an easy configuration somewhere, but could someone just explain how to start/run database without Web connection?
I also want to run the database from laptop while travelling on train and hence want to navigate through all features of Oracle 10g without web connection.
I guess a further question is simply what is the advantage of the database connecting to Web for someone like myself who is just wanting to run all queries etc locally on the base PC?
Would appreciate advice on this matter.

Well, when installing XE out of the box, all remote connections from other machines are disallowed by default.
Thus only you can access the management user interface of XE. The GUI is run in a web browser, thus you will need the web connection for yourself on your local machine. This is a very good reason to have the web connection enabled ;).
In order to disallow any web connections (even from your local machine) you can use dbms_xdb.sethttpport('0'); ( http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/01/xe-changing-default-http-port.html ) .

Running Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition: Multicore or MultiProcessor

I have the option of running Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition on a SunFire v480 (4 x 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC III) or a Sunfire T-2000 with a 1Ghz 8-core processor. Assume both machines will be running Solaris 10 as the operating system and have comparable amounts of RAM.
What would be the best choice for performance, and why? Does Oracle 10g have any optimizations that enhance it's ability to run on a multi-core or multi-processor system, or is that mostly dependent on the OS itself?

Each (dedicated) oracle connection has its own process, plus all of the background processes. This means they will benefit from multiple cpu/core architectures. Assuming that the multi-core solution appears to the OS as multiple processors, it will be the best solution since you have the most CPU power. Be sure to check the licensing rules for multi-core processors, there are some special rules about them.

Developer 6i Installation with Oracle 8i on Windows 2000 Server

Hi Folks,
     We are using Oracle 8i (8.1.7) with Developer 6i for the past 2-3 years. Oracle 8i is installed on Windows 2000 Server and the client machines have Developer 6i installed. Using the Net 8 Easy Configuration Utility, the clients and the server are linked perfectly and we have never experienced any major issue regarding the connectivity from the clientâs sides.
     Now my question is that, is there any possibility that we can also install Developer 6i on the server, âcause we have tried this several times and every time after installing Developer 6i on the server, the Net 8 Easy Configuration Utility does not invokes and obviously we are unable to use any of the Developer 6i products and moreover after installing Developer the already installed 8i Database does not gets mounted and we are also unable to use the database.
     Are we missing some basic stuff here or do we need to run some patch for Windows 2000 Server?
     Another thing, all our forms and reports are residing on clientâs hard disks; can we also have the option that the forms and reports should also reside on the server so that we can easily update our forms and reports definitions from the server side?

You can run 10.2.0.4 on Windows 2003 x64 nicely and upgrade to Windows 2008. Since there is no "upgrade" (it is the highest version supported) there´s no need to do anything.
The question you have to ask is:
Why do you need Windows 2008? Is there any technical implication?
