Using Apple as a Linux KDE-user, there are certain things that work differently and that one has to get used to. It's just the way it is. But there are also things that one really experiences as a handicap. In this discussion, I would like to talk about things that feel like a downgrade to me.
What I really miss is a smart clipboard
Having recently started using Apple in my work as a LAMP-developer, one of those handicaps is that the clipboard in Snow Leopard is nowhere to be compared with Klipper. Its functionality is as limited as the Windows clipboard (which I don't consider something to be proud of). The main differences are:
- automatic copying/cutting of selected text to the clipboard
- pasting with a simple mouse click
- clipboard history
- system tray icon
Working mainly with text files, you can imagine my handicap when having to open the context menu with the mouse twice (or press Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V) each time I want to copy or cut some text. It seems so unnecessary actions.
Looking around on the net, there are many people who ask for these features. A lot of tools try to fill in the gaps, but all of them I have tried don't even come near Klipper. I think it's time for Apple developers to solve it.

More than a simple clipboard is likely to confuse novice users. Most people using a computer are not technically-savvy. IMHO, in cases like this where many people won't even know what they're missing and might even wish it would go away if they did have it, it's best to let the third-party software companies take care of it. When I think about some of the folks whose computers I support - some of whom can't figure out basic things like how to eject a disk or where the Word file they just saved is - I cringe at the idea of how to explain to them how to use a more sophisticated clipboard.
In any case, though, debating whether Apple should implement something is not really appropriate material for these forums. Speculation or discussion of Apple policies is forbidden here, as it's not in keeping with the purpose of this site and tends to lead to some very heated interchanges, and this thread is close to that line.

What setting do you have in Quiz > Settings > Required? If it's not set to Optional, do that.

OH MY God what is really going on?

My identity has been stolen from a big group of well organized criminals who are playing beautiful music together. Meaning they are working hard and well together at what they are trying to accomplish together. Well l have to change my emails on a daily basis because I always end up with them changing my passwords. I have nothing to steal I am a struggling college student and get all A's. I got a 53 on an exam and had to drop a class and pay for it because of all the confusion and time that this has caused me. I have suffered going back and forth to the store to bring in both my Mac Air and my Hp. The passwords I notice have to connect in order for them to do their business. I shut my keys off and keep asking for the password. The password they had missed. I get an agent request and almost gave up my key to it because it would not get off my screen. I have a FaceTime that I have never accessed before and it had 8,000 downloads? What are all these downloads is that the Apple processing whatever needs to be in there or what? I think I am being used as a robot because I cannot understand what they really want from me. My phone call got redirected when I tried to call Microsoft last night and am smart enough to know what was going on and told the woman to back off . She said yes okay. I called a Microsoft # and got redirected to these criminals. I have spent too much time going back and forth to get my computer cleaned up by the geeksquad. The geek told me he has never seen anything like it in his life. What do they want from me? Maybe they bribed the government about me. I do not know what is really going on. I just installed OSx and Safari Last night and at the next morning they had been uninstalled. What do you think? Oh, My Mac Air has been restored twice already and is a month old. I told the head tech at apply some things that would be useful to the company and when I was finished talking the phone hung up and she never even returned my call. Why? This is ridiculous!

When customers use Mobile Broadband and certain allowance thresholds are reached, an SMS alert is automatically generated; only if the Mobile Broadband device is turned on and VZAM (VZAccess Manager) is running. This applies to all VZW Mobile Broadband type devices.
The requirements for Mobile Broadband Usage Alerts are:
VZ Access Manager 6.9 and higher required.
All Mobile Broadband type devices and plans.
Customers using NDIS, Windows DUN, or any other connection manager will not recieve the alert or email.
Apple Macintosh computers are not compatible with SMS so will not get the alerts.
This international usage alert can be displayed as a popup or it might be received as a regular SMS message.
The alerts are sent out in SMS form. You can check your SMS messages by clicking the "TXT" tab at the top of your VZ Access Manager. Examples of Mobile Broadband usage alerts are the following:

Four alerts will be sent at the pre-defined thresholds (50%, 75%, 90% and 100%), based on the plan allowance.

Files disappeared from library, "missing" files not really missing

I had a folder with 3 files in different formats for each image. These were imported several days ago, grouped into stacks, captioned, tagged, etc. and synced to the files. They continued to exist in the library some time afterward, but today when I opened lightroom all of the jpg versions of all of the images and all 3 formats of one image in particular had vanished from the library. It did not claim that it could not find them on disk (and in fact the files *do* still exist on disk right where they should), they just didn't show up. I was able to re-import all of the jpg images without trouble, but for the other two formats of the one missing image, importing one of them fails because it "already exists in the library," and the other one is willing to import but then doesn't show up in the folder or the recently imported files list. When I try to synchronize the folder, it suggests that I import that file, but it never actually does. Since importing the jpgs, it also suggests that I remove 53 "missing" files, the number of jpgs imported. When I view the missing files in the library, it shows only 2 of the jpgs, one of which belongs with the files that will not import and neither of which is actually missing--they can both be synchronized just fine by clicking the little synchronize icon on the actual photo.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how I might be able to get the files that won't import back into the library? And how to be sure that files won't just go away on their own again?
Edit: to be clear, missing versions of files were definitely not stacked with the other ones and the "don't import duplicates" box was not checked when re-importing the ones that won't re-import

I managed to get the photos that wouldn't import back in by deleting them directly out of the database and then reimporting them into lightroom. I'm a little concerned that they disappeared in the library view in the first place, though. Does this sort of thing happen often, and under what circumstances? I'm still in the free trial period and was very close to buying the program, but now I'm not so sure. If I'm using an application to manage my photos, I want to know that it's actually managing all of the photos I put into it and not randomly forgetting about them.
I'm still having the not-really-missing files problem, though. I think it may actually be because they got associated as "sidecar" files somehow and are now in there twice, once as the sidecar file and another time as a separate jpg image. I'm not really sure why only one of them shows up in the missing images view, I think it might be because I edited that one so it's in a slightly different state from the others? If there are any tips on how to resolve that state, I'm all ears, I'd like it to stop telling me I have 53 missing files when I don't.

How to tell what fonts are missing in a Photosohp CS5 document?

Hello! I have received some work from a graphic designer. I need to modify some of the text in the document. When I open the document I get an error message:
Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now? [Update] [No]
If I click [Update] it replaces the font with Myriad Pro. If I click [No] the text looks the way the designer intended, but I have the exclamation mark-triangle symbol over the layer with the text. If I try to edit the text I get another warning:
Editing or rendering the text layer "Text Layer" will cause its layout to change. Continue? [Cancel] [OK]
The same behavior described above occurs. If I click [Cancel] I obviously can't edit the text. If I click [OK] it changes the font to Myriad Pro.
I would like to determine what font the layer is using. I could swear that previous versions of Photoshop would tell me what fonts were missing when I opened a document. I can't use the text tool to select the text without it changing the font. Other posts have mentioned using the text tool to look at the text drop-down to find a greyed-out font which indicates the missing font. I do not have that. I only have perhaps 200 fonts installed. Can anyone tell me how to determine what fonts a .PSD document is using? I would prefer not to bug the graphic designer if possible. Thanks much!

Not sure why you are getting ""Font is present on the system but requires a layout change.", usually you do not get that instead the name of the font shows.
We use extensis Universal Type Client, so the fonts load automatically upon opening files, and never really get missing fonts in Photoshop.
Actually fontbook has auto font loading if you want to give that a try. Fontbook >> Preferences

If things are really missing, you may try the list (in this case 5) is irrelevant).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:

5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);

6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

I have created one simple user.
Then I created a User Policy Package, including a DLU policy and a User
Extensible Policy, in which I disabled "Registry editing tools".
I have assigned my policy to my user :
- the DLU policy works fine, my user is created at login, in the user group
I've chosen
- unfortunately, the user has access to regedit, and the parameters I
modifiy in the common.adm policy does not seem to be applied.
What did I miss ?

I once noticed a strange behaviour you might want to check.
When working in the policy package, I associated the policy package directly
to users.
It failed to apply.
I looked at the user for associated policies and it was empty. I can't
really remember whether or not the new policy association showed up in
effective policies or not. I suspect not.
So I worked from the user screen and associated the policy and it worked.
Maybe that will work for you.

My custom identity asserter is ignored - what did I miss?

My custom identity asserter's assertIdentity method is never called - even though I've verified that the correct token is added to the request header. I am hoping for some guidance as to what I am missing.
1. I downloaded this sample app which uses ADF security: http://jdevsamples.googlecode.com/files/ADFSecurityWL.zip
I changed the app to:
- add a filter to dump request headers to System.out so I could verify that the token is correctly added to the request headers
- changed the auth-method in web.xml from BASIC to CLIENT-CERT
2. I also downloaded the sample authentication providers (for WLS 9.1) from here: https://codesamples.samplecode.oracle.com/servlets/tracking?id=S224
and created a custom identity asserter based on the sample identity asserter provider in the app.
3. I created an EAR file for the app and an mbean jar for the custom identity assertion provider.
4. I added the mbean jar to the correct directory under weblogic, restarted weblogic, and created an instance of my provider in the security realm. I also reordered the providers so mine would be first (not sure if that matters). Then I restarted weblogic again. I verified that my provider was in the list of providers and that the chosen "Active Types" included my token type.
5. I deployed the app EAR file to weblogic.
6. I created a test program based on the test program in the sample providers download (above) and connected to the deployed app. I verified that the test program added the correct token to the request. My app's filter dumped the headers and I could see the token there.
7. My custom identity assertion provider has System.out.println calls in the initialize() and assertIdentity() methods. I can see that the initialize() method is called when I start weblogic. However, I never see the assertIdentity() method's calls to System.out.println when I try to reach the app and those calls are the 1st thing in the method.
8. I am using WebLogic Server version 10.3.3.0
So, is there some obvious step I missed? (I am new to using WLS so it wouldn't surprise me if I got something really obvious wrong...)

When I compared my mbean declaration with yours I discovered that I had set the Extends attribute to "weblogic.management.security.authentication.Authenticator" instead of "weblogic.management.security.authentication.IdentityAsserter". Using the correct value fixed my problem.

You're not heavy on specifics on what you don't like.
Most people have little technical expertise but are wanting more and more, requiring more complex computers, ideally ending up with one from Star Trek where you basically don't have to know anything how to really use a computer and it just provides you with the exact answer you need to a not particularly well-phrased query. If you're missing things like configuration options and the rest, well frankly I think many people are happy not to have to make complicated decisions for themselves such as in which opening do they insert a system installer disc.

Is Lock Titles / Rows / Columns really missing?

Please tell me it is not so. Is Lock Titles / Rows / Columns really missing from numbers? I'm not trying to make giant sheets, but even a page full doesn't fit on the screen on my MacBook so I need to see the headers. Even my good ole AppleWork did this well.

As a new Numbers user, and an old user of conventional spreadsheets from day-one, I felt as you do and submitted feedback to Apple about spreadsheet screen-splitting. That was over a year ago before I began building spreadsheets the Numbers way. Now I wouldn't bother submitting feedback on that item. Each new spreadsheet of mine has more tables per sheet and the average table size is a fraction of what I used to make. The way I build spreadsheets now, locking the first row is something that rarely enters my mind, and if I'm working in Print View with Header Rows and Columns, my titles are always on the screen anyway.
But what if I have really long tables and don't like to see them broken up with page margins? Well, that brings up a Numbers issue far more worthy of feedback. When tables become that large, Numbers becomes so lethargic that you will look for another application to solve your problem.
That's my perspective, for whatever comfort it may bring you.

After updating to the latest version of Firefox on my Mac there is no progress bar for the page load. I really miss this feature and can't seem to find a way to obtain it.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session. 
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time. 
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page. 
Another possibility is to use:

Thank you so much for providing the details about the duplicate song issue you are experiencing. It sounds like you would like to remove the duplicate songs that will not play on your iPhone, but when you connect it to iTunes, iTunes only shows you one copy of the song on your iPhone.
In this situation, I recommend deleting the individual songs that do not play directly from your iPhone. I found the steps to do this on page 61 of the iPhone User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf):
Delete a song from iPhone: In Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete.
