The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose hard drive interface cables. There are some caveats to be aware of when replacing the hard drive! While in theory any SATA drive is compatible, I have experienced problems with a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB and a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB recently.
With my WD drive I have had to adjust the power management settings (using a command line tool called "hdapm") to prevent it from spinning up and down every 20 to 30 seconds, and which was also leading to momentary freeze ups. While this may kill my battery a bit quicker, I'm hoping the drive will at least live an average lifetime. (Batteries may be more expensive, but they're a lot quicker to replace than a hard drive).
My Seagate drive has exhibited far less frequent problems but the occasional noises it made have never sounded healthy and after 6 months is now being replaced under warranty. There were also a number of days where I would get excessive beachballing for no reason I could identify, and that I concluded must be hard disk related. I couldn't find anything here or elsewhere on the internet to indicate what the cause of that might be.
So my limited experience of hard disk replacement hasn't been a great success and I'm beginning to wonder if getting an official replacement from Apple might be a safer option in the long run, despite it being more expensive. I read somewhere that the hard disks supplied by Apple have custom firmware that works better with Apple's own power management strategies.

I run my iTunes via a external hard drive, however it has lost all it's contents and I haven't backed up! What can I do?
My iPad contents probably 75% of my iTunes library, but I'm scared to sync just in case in wipes the entire contents. I know I should of backed up but it was one of them jobs I never got round too (will def do now if my problem is solved)
Can anyone help with a solution?
    Many thanks

If all of your media is from iTunes, don't worry about it. You can either transfer everything on your iPad from your iPad to your commputer; and/or you can redownload from iTunes all music and apps, and most of everything else.
If any of your media is from other sources, that's not so easily recoverable. If it's on your iPad, you can transfer it to your computer via a third-party application such as Senuti. (There are many alternatives to Senuti, some work just as well and are free.) Anything from non-iTunes sources and not on your iPad is completely gone, unless you have CDs or other physical media from which you obtained it stored somewhere.
At least now you know how important it is to have a backup.

    Either of these should help.

Or search 'disk size' in the App Store.
Be carefull with what you delete & have a backup BEFORE you start, you may also want to reboot to try to free any memory that may have been written to disk.

make sure you're using the adobe cleaner, not crap cleaner, Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
copy the installation files to a desktop folder and install from there.

  • What's the Difference Between Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure

    Hi!
So I wanted to know the difference between a Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure because a couple of days ago I tried starting my computer up and I was welcomed by the Apple chime and a grey screen. I have been researching and most people say its either the hard drive or the logic board. So I am curious to know what are the symptoms of both. Thanks a lot, in advance!

The hard drive is where the OS resides, if it dies there is no OS loading, so you can't boot. If you hook up your external drive with your clone of the internal drive, boot up and hold down the option key, select your clone drive as the startup drive in boot manager that then appears, and the computer boots normally, then the computer is OK, it is just the internal drive that has gone south. You don't have a clone to boot from? Now you know why you should.
You could try booting from the DVD that came with the computer, hold down the "D" key to run diagnostics and see what the results are. If you can't boot into the diagnostics then a trip to the Apple store is probably in order.

  • Just had to put a new hard drive in my Macbook. How do I "backload" my Ipod tunes into Itunes on the new hard drive I had installed?

I just had to put a new hard drive in my Macbook. How do I "backload" my Ipod tunes back into Itunes on the new hard drive I had installed?

Somebody told me that as soon as I connect the Ipod to the computer, Itunes will will wipe it clean and install what is in the Itunes library (which is nothing) and that I would need some sort of software to accomplish this. Does it matter that the tunes on the Ipod were all uploaded from cd's and not purchased?

  • Running Creative Suite 4 from External Hard Drive

I recently purchased Adobe Creative Suite 4 (student edition), however, I do not have enough space install it directly on my MacBook. What I would like to do instead is install the programs onto a portable external hard drive, and always run them from there.
I am not sure exactly what capacity and speed external hard drive to purchase for these programs to run well, I am trying to decide between the Western Digital 500 GB Passport Studio with a 5400 RPM, and the LaCie 320GB (maybe even the 200GB) hard drive with 7200 RPM. Is the faster RPM more desirable, or would more space with a slower RPM be a better choice?
Is it best to use firewire or is USB an okay connection between the computer and the drive for smooth functioning?
Additionally, is it possible to have some of the programs that I use more frequently on the computer, and the rest on the external hard drive? Or must all of the files be in the same place?

    I'd highly recommend either:
    1. Moving large files on your internal drive (movies, music etc) to your external to clear up space for the Adobe applications.  They should be run from the system drive, not an external.
    or
    2. Get a bigger hard drive.

  • Suddenly all my Word documents are gone. What happened? Are they recoverable (no back-up hard drive or time machine)

Suddenly all my Word documents are gone. What happened? Are they recoverable (no back-up hard drive, no time machine)?

    Greetings,
What happened right before they went missing? (software updates, "cleaning" up the computer, etc.)
Are your other files still there like music, movies, pictures, bookmarks, etc?
I'm sure you've already come to this conclusion yourself, you need a back up. Its easy to do with 10.5.8 and later: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553.
Try searching your account for any ".doc" files (Word documents) by going to File > Find and using the options below:
If you don't find any of the documents you are looking for in the search window and nothing else is missing then it would be wise to get a second opinion ASAP before any chance of data recovery is lost.
Make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store (they don't do data recovery but may be able to see something we can't see from here) or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they can look around the hard drive for you.
If the second opinion reveals that the data is really gone off the entire computer then you will need data recovery software or service:
Data recovery software requires you have a separate hard drive so you'll need to buy one first. Data recovery software examples:

  • G3 missing internal hard drives using OS 10.3.9, Disk drives work with OS 9

G3 missing internal hard drives using OS 10.3.9, Disk drives work with OS 9. I installed OS X over a year ago, and could never get it to recognize 2 previous internal disk drives. When I run OS 9 it works fine.

    rob:
I think I'm beginning to get the picture. "Missing drives" refers to the two that do not show up on the DT when you boot in OS X. Now, some more questions for clarification.
    1. Is each of the drives formatted Mac OS Extended or HFS+?
    2. What do you have on each individual drive?
    3. What OS is installed on the Master drive?
    4. Are OS 9 and OS X installed on separate drives?
    5. If they are, is there a particular reason you want it so?
    6. Can you use the Startup Manager to select the startup disk?
    7. Which is the default startup disk?
Lots of questions, I know, but it will help me to get a picture of the set up. I think I have an idea of what is going on, but I can't be sure until I know more.
    Good luck.

  • My MacBook Air chimes during startup but flashes a bar at the bottom then shuts down, is this a hard drive failure or a hard ware failure? Please help I miss my laptop

First generation MacBook Air running OSX 10.6.8

    Hi,
From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP.  Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • Mini hard drive failure? What to do...

My Mini was exhibiting signs of hard drive failure: Lots of SBBODs, taking a long time to bootup (and sometimes not booting up), locking up for no apparent reason with only the mouse working, and making clicking noises like the hard drive is searching for something.
I ran Onyx and repaired permissions to no avail. Hardware check showed no problems. I ran Disk Utility from the setup disk and it repaired several problems (e.g., invalid leaf record, minor Bit Map repair, invalid volume free block count, etc.). It reported that my hard drive was repaired successfully.
However, the drive is still acting up. Strangely, when I jiggle or tilt the Mini while it's hanging, it will sometimes kick-start it. It looks bad all around. Fortunately, my valuable data is all on an external drive (250 GB MiniStack), since I use the Mini to manage my media and a PowerBook as my primary machine.
    My questions are these:
    • Does it make sense to continue using this drive by zeroing out the drive and reinstalling Tiger?
    • Or, should I consider replacing the drive altogether (the tilting action makes me think it may be mechanical)?
Or course, my AppleCare expired a couple of weeks ago...<sigh>
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Best,
    Amy

    Sounds exactly like mine!
See if you have any friends with computers that could loan you a stick of 2700 or higher.
If I were closer, I would loan you my other stick from my PC.
Since your valuable data is on another drive...if you want to reload everything...
You can erase and reinstall OSX. If the drive is bad, it will have problems loading, then you'll know.
If it does load, and it runs fine, then the OS was somehow screwed up, but if it gives you the SBBOD again after the install and during software update or other intensive programs (like mine did) then I would suspect the memory.
Memory isn't used very much for the minor applications during the Hardware Test or booting to CD/DVD. Mine only showed up during actual OS booting and running programs, but since it's the easiest thing to replace and check, that's what I did first and it resolved my problems.
