What if I already have my photos organized in folders outside of iphoto?

I already have all my photos stored in a year folder/event subfolder structure, outside of iphoto. How do I get my photos into iphoto and preserve this year folder/event subfolder structure? I tried dragging the 2008 folder into the iphoto source list window, but it just imported all the photos from that year into one giant mess....it didn't honor my subfolders.
I have iphoto's prefs set to NOT copy files to the iphoto library folder, but this does not make it use my existing folder structure...and the online help gives no clue how to do the import so that my existing folder structure will be preserved in iphoto. Is this even possible, or is iphoto out of control, like the U.S. Government?

If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
I have iphoto's prefs set to NOT copy files to the iphoto library folder, but this does not make it use my existing folder structure..
You misunderstand what that's for. iPhoto is a Database, not a simple photo viewer. It's about organisng Photos. What you have there is an structure of files. The point of iPhoto to offer enormous flexibility organising your Photos regardless of the file location.
When you run a Referenced Library (with that option unchecked) iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

How can I transfer photos from my Windows computer to my Ipad.
I already have the photos transfered into a photo stream file.
How to activate the transfer ?

    Hey Juergen119,
I would recommend syncing your photos from your computer to your iPad by using iTunes:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
First, if you want to set it up to work via iCloud, I would check and make sure My Photo Stream is set up correctly on your devices:
To use My Photo Stream you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.1 or later
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or Aperture 3.2.3 or later
Apple TV (2nd generation) with Apple TV Software Update 5.0 or later
PC with Windows 7 or later and the iCloud Control Panel 2.1 or later for Windows
For complete iCloud setup instructions, visit How to set up iCloud.
Then, once it is set up, you can upload your photos to My Photo Stream by following these directions:
PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later: Open a Windows Explorer window and under Favorites select iCloud Photos if you are using iCloud Control Panel 3.0 (or Photo Stream if you are using 2.0 to 2.1.2). Open My Photo Stream. Click the "Add photos" button. Select the photos to import to My Photo Stream, then click Open.

I have 300 apps organized in folders on my ipod touch 4th gen, and connected my iphone 4, these apps have copied over but none have been placed in folders, any ideas how to replicate folders from ipod to iphone...?

What may work is to restore the iPhone fom the backup of the iPod.  However, if the two devices ahve different apps that come with the device, that may mess up some of the folders.

  • When I open iPhoto its asks me what photo library I want to use.  I already have a photo library that i've been using for 2 years, where did it go? and why am I being asked now to choose a library or "create new" what happened to all my photos?

When I open iPhoto it asks me to choose a photo library.  I already have a libary with photos and events in it that I've been using for 2 years.  Where did it go?  What happened to all my photos

We have no way of knowing what goes on on your machine. All we can tell is that your iPhoto library is missing and iPhoto can't find it. If you can't find then I the only thing you can do is restore from your Back Up.

  • I am moving all my iphoto pictures to seperate folders outside of iphoto.  I have found iphoto slighlty cumbersome.  After I move all pictures from iphoto to a separate file how can I delete all the iphoto photos without deleting the ones in the file?

I am moving all of my iphoto pictures into seperate folders becuase iphoto is great, but a bit cumbersome when I need to transfer all the pictures to a external drive.
    1) After I move all pictures, how can I delete the iphoto pictures without destroying the ones I have in files
    2) how can I ensure that I have sucessfully captures all the iphoto files so when I delelte from iphoto I have not forgotten any
    3) is there a way to determine what duplicate pictures I have?
    Thanks!

If you Control click on the iPhoto Library, you'll see a list of folders - one named "Masters". Inside of this folder are all of your original, high-res photos. You can copy them to other folders if you like.
You can't delete iPhoto pics without deleting the ones in the iPhoto Library.
You can copy all of your Masters pics out of the Library, ensuring that you won't forget any.
I don't know of anyway to determine if there are duplicate photos - most (if not all) have a unique name assigned.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • How to download photos to file folders and not iPhotos?

I want to keep my photos in my own photo folders, do I use Image Capture for that? I notice that iPhoto only keeps photos in iPhoto Library if I download with iPhoto.

Yes, use Image capture for that.
Mind you, iPhoto is much, much more flexible for organising your photos that folders full of files.
Are you concerned about accessing the files?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • What to do to have clear photos?

I am a newbie, sorry. I am trying to create a slideshow with PPCS4 and some of the photos seem blurry, the quality just does not seem as good as when I view the photos on my computer. I will be viewing this on a tv via dvd. I import my pictures w/o them being scaled so I can have room to pan and zoom. I want to know what settings should I be using for everything to get the best picture? Should I be concerned about interlace/deinterlace? Does it matter if I choose 16:9 or 4:3 (it will be viewed on 16:9). I have read that photoshop scales things down better, should I do this and scale it down maybe 50% then bring it in and scale down further if I have to. I just want a simple list of what I need to do and how I should have all of my settings. I am sooo frustrated and upset. I understand how to do alot with PP I just don't understand all the settings and how to get them correct.
    thank you
    Martina

    Martina,
I do not have CS4, so it might have improved over my PrP2. Still, I do most of my Slideshows in PrP2. I do not use random pans/zooms, so I have a script beforehand for each image. I resize in Photoshop first. I found that PS's re-sizing algorithms were better than those in PrP2. I size exactly as is needed for each image.
If I shoot the images, I have the 16-bit RAW image to deal with, and Export the finals as .PSD's from PS, sized exactly as is necessary. These Import perfectly into PrP. If you have JPG's as original, you can try either .PSD's, or .TIFF's, especially if you are re-sizing. However, depending on the JPEG settings, the "damage" might have already been done. Because I am first an advertising still photographer, I always start with the ultimate images. If clients are handing off the material, you have far less control.
There is also a discussion ongoing in the PrP2 forum:
    See This Article
There are some suggestions in it, that *might* benefit you.
    Good luck,

I would like to know if this patch work if I have the virus in my computer? I'm not a computer savy and I just discover that I have shared my computer with who knows who is so sad.. but I need to fix this ASAP!!! Please somebody who can help me!

I'm not sure what "virus" you're referring to. Your tags indicate DNSChanger, but that did not involve Java and has been dead since November of last year. Further, the malicious servers used by DNSChanger were shut down in July, so you would have had serious internet problems starting at that time if you were infected with DNSChanger.
If you are referring to Flashback, that particular update does not remove the malware, but if you simply run Software Update and let it install whatever is available, you will be fine and the malware will be removed, if present. See About the Flashback malware.

  • I am home sharing with another computer and it's set up, but how do I see what music I already have of theirs?

    help!

It doesn't appear that there is an easy way to make iMovie for iOS to display an entire portrait photo without zooming in.  I found a little workaround, however...open the portrait photo in the Photos app, put your device in landscape orientation (so that there are black bars on the sides) and take a screenshot.  The new image in your camera roll will now have black bars on all 4 sides of the photo, and if you import the photo into an iMovie project, you will see that it will zoom the top and bottom black bars out so that it perfectly displays the entire portrait photo.

  • What if I already have version 10.6.4 but I want to upgrade to Ap3?

I was reading the posts from the many people who have had problems with Ap3 and then upgraded to 10.6.4. I have the opposite situation: I have 10.6.4 but want to upgrade to Ap3. Has anyone experienced any problems with this upgrade?

Yes, lots of issues when upgrade to Ap3. Most can be avoided
It takes a long time and some times days to finish the install. Leave it on and don't use it until it is finished. This could save you lots of problems. Turn Faces off if you don't need the feature as this looks at every image and scans it to identify faces.
iMac, do you have 4GB RAM as this is about a minimum for reliable operation of Ap3 at a half serious work load level.
The install will need to use a lot of your hard drive space for a period. You get this back when it is finished.
When it is done Check for Aperture Updates especially if the upgrade is from Disc. Allan

  • WHAT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A MOVIE BOUGHT ON DVD?!?!?!

can you put a dvd from your house and put it into your 5th gen. ipod? How?

I think he/she needs their entire itunes music library on a CD
    No.
I believe asdf;lkj meant to write, "i need to put many files that are on one dvd" not "many files i need to put many files on one dvd"
because when you RIP a DVD, you can end up with many different .VOB and other files, depending on the RIPping software and how you have it set up.
You only need the Mian feature RIPped to watch the movie. Asstated, the other soundtracks, extras, previews may all get RIPed and be confusing to the beginner.

How do I NOT migrate existing albums to my iPhoto library?

iCloud is not available in Snow Leopard 10.6.x. You need OS X Lion or Mt Lion to gain access to iCloud.

  • TIP: What to do if the Recovered Photos File will not import into iPhoto...

Like many others in this forum, I just upgraded to iWork/iLife '06. When I installed iPhoto '06 it trashed my existing iPhoto Folder and placed all of my other existing photos (those not already imported previously into iPhoto) into a recovered photos file. I tried and tried and tried to import those "recovered photos" into iPhoto but it kept returning an error message on import "Unreadable file"
Finally I selected the "recovered files" then clicked on "Get Info" and found that the permissions were "locked" with a padlock icon. Clicking once on the padlock opened the permissions back to me the "owner" and the iPhoto allowed me to import all of those 425 "recovered photos". Whew! I hope this tip helps someone else out - I had to figure this out on my own...

The fact that you can use the Raws from your XSi is of no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Changing the Raw specification is one of the ways of upgrading the cameras.
IPhoto and Aperture support -  or don't -  the same cameras.
