  • I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full. But I have lots of RAM available.  Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Could my machine be spending SSD space and not RAM?

I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full.  I have tons of RAM available. Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Thanx.

Hello and thanqueue again KW.  I have had power management issues in the past tho they seemed to disappear with a new battery.  But I'll try this before I do the dreaded re-install.  haha.  And resetting the PRAM is something one should do from time to time if I recall correctly.  And it's been at least 3 years since I did that.
So I'll probably try that again.  Thanqueue.
And as I mentioned above, yeah I probably don't even have an SSD, I'd never heard of it before the other night and know I've never purchased one.  So thanx pop-iup for the totally bogus info, tho it's gotten me to this discussion page which is very helpful and I appreciate the suggestions.
In its favour, the machine will shut down normally when I'm brave enough to do so.  But it's quite a few moments till all the desktop is restored again when repowered, so I do tend to keep it in sleep mode for days, even weeks sometimes, knowing I'm putting extra wear and tear on it.
But at one point a few years ago, it took 5 minutes just to hear the chime.  It's better now, I hear the chime almost immediately, then it clunks into working mode obviously quite overburdened.  It's a wonder it's still speaking to me!  And I use it fairly heavily without too much problem (tho have some spods and the occassional app crash), have over a million files, I suppose that's not unusual.. it was making duplicate files on its own for a while but I think that's stopped.  hahaha.  etc etc and so on.
But it is very odd to have it, with a battery full of power or even plugged in, just drop out of commission when my back is turned lol for even a few minutes.  There seems to be some misguided trigger at work.  So I'll czeck those power re-sets and see if that takes care of it.
    Domo gosaimashita!

  • I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM... I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM? Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?

    I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,
    Dylan

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

You can upgrade directly to Snow Leopard if your hardware supports it without first installing Leopard. Leopard is no longer available but you can order a copy via Apple Care if they are still available - $129.00. Otherwise, you need to find a third-party vendor such as eBay or Amazon.com.
The price for Snow Leopard is $29.00. It's available from any Apple retailer or the Online Store.

  • PS CC 2014 Says I don't have enough graphics & ram when I definitely do?

All other versions of PS work just fine for me, but sadly I can't roll back to PS CC for some reason. Anyway, when I try to do anything intense such as render lighting effects, I get errors saying my graphics/driver is outdated (it's a clean install, everything is up to date), and that there is not enough ram.
    I have 12GB of ram
I have 2GB of vram, of which PS is allowed to use all of it.
My graphics drivers are the latest, I got them off the website myself and installed them.
    I have 64-bit Win 8.1
I just don't understand. PS CC worked fine but it won't let me get that back, and currently I've had to go back to CS6, which also works fine. I can do everything in CS6, so I'll be sticking with it for now, but I do like the improvements made to CC 2014 and would like to be able to use it. Is anyone else having this problem? Is it a bug that will be resolved eventually? What can I do (I've deleted/reset prefs, uninstalled and reinstalled, still not working)? Ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Uploading images of the errors:

I was wrong about the specific error, it's the error in the first picture- Use Graphics Processor... your video card must meet the minimum requirements... check that your driver is working correctly...etc" I took that to mean my graphics or graphics driver are outdated, but my graphics processor DOES meet the minimum requirements- exceeds them in fact, and my driver was the newest one downloaded directly from intel.
Here is the info from the latest re-install. I just reset my computer and only installed the latest drivers and photoshop (different version, I don't think cc 2014 is going to play nice with me, but I will try it again also)

  • What's holding me back? ram?

I can only hit stable at 3.45Ghz (15*230) to run 1:1 and anything higher, memetest got errors. Tried increased to ddr 2.8v, loosen timming at 2.5-4-4-8 but no luck. When running test 5 got tons of errors. I didn't try prime95 since memetest didn't pass... If set to CL3 my system won't boot (Can't set CL2.5 to CL3? Lousy ram?) So I decided to run dividers to see how far my system can push.
Currently [email protected] (15*250) cpu temp idle at 50c load at 70c (readings taken from speedfan v4.2)
    Ratio 5:4 ddr@333
    Cpu voltage - 1.45v
    DDR voltage - 2.8v
    AGP voltage - 1.6v
    Spread spectrum - Disable
    AGP/PCI clock - 66.67/33.33
    Dram timing manual 2.5-3-3-8
Running prime95 either small or large both failed. Increased vcore up to 1.5v, agp 1.7v and timming at 2.5-4-4-8 also failed when running prime. Now guys what could be the problem here? Even running at ratio 3:2 ddr@266 also won't help! Thanks

The whole point of using memtest is to ensure your memory is not the limiting factor in your overclock. In order to really test your memory, you need to do this.
Run a 4 hour loop of standard tests (1-7)
Run a 24 hour loop of test 5
test 5 needs something like 32 (or 200 (or 1 million)) iterations to test your whole stick of memory, however many iterations it is, 24 hours should be just enough time to complete that)
No offense but you have cheap memory so it will not overclock very far. If you want to overclock with a 1:1 FSB:MEM ratio then I would recommend buying ADATA Vitesta PC4000 memory. It's cheap, I've used it in my P4 system, and I've seen it work in other people's P4 systems.
Therefore, in order to utilize your cheap memory, you're going to need to run a divider (keeping your memory at 200mhz or lower).
If you think just because you're running a divider, now you can raise the FSB to 250 (keeping your memory at 200) then you're wrong. That's a significant increase in CPU clock speed and chances are it's just too far of an increase or it will require more of VCore to run at that speed. With certain pentium 4's you can do this sort of thing but not all of them. I had a 2.4C that went straight to 3.0ghz without a bump in VCore. You have a prescott so that changes the scheme of things. FYI: I've seen prescotts overclocked real far, so I'm surprised you can't get this far.
Here's what you do. Run a 5:6 divider (the one you have now, where your memory is 200mhz when your FSB is 250). Set your FSB to 250 and run memtest the way I told you to. This will test your memory at it's highest possible frequency, which means, when your FSB is lower then 250 your memory will be lower then 200 and that means that your memory is safe at 200 so it's safe at anything lower then that.
Now set your FSB to 200, keep your VCore stock. Turn the computer on, run prime95 "in place FTT's" at priority 10 and make sure it doesn't fail for as long as you feel comfortable (note: this is testing your CPU at stock speed and your memory at 166 I believe). The reason I say test it for as long as you feel comfortable is because it's stock speed so as long as it passes for like a half an hour you know you're okay. Now raise the FSB from 200 to 205, do not increase VCore. Run prime95 as stated again for 1-3 hours. If that passes, raise the FSB from 205 to 210, again, do not increase VCore. Keep raising the FSB in 5mhz incraments (without raising VCore) until prime95 won't pass anymore, (note: the longer you run prime95, the greater the chance it will fail!!! so keep this in mind when cutting off your tests at the three hour mark, i've seen tests fail at 5, 7, and 12 hours in). When it doesn't pass anymore, raise the VCore to the next lowest VCore (1.525 to 1.5375 (or something lower if there's something in between the two of them)). Re-run prime95 with the new VCore for as long as you can tolerate and if it passes raise the FSB and try again. If it fails, go back to BIOS and raise the VCore again to the next lowest incrament. Repeat this process until you finally pass prime95. then go back to increasing FSB by 5mhz incraments, again not raising the VCore with each iteration. Then when you come to the next failure in prime95, begin raising the VCore again. Eventually you will come to a point where you cannot stabilize your computer in prime95 regardless of how much VCore you give it or you can't get to the desired VCore because temperatures are too high. If that's the case, back the FSB down to the last stable FSB/VCore and that will be your max overclock.
    What should you have learned?
You need to watch your temperatures the entire time when running prime95, never take your eyes off of that. Too much VCore will fry a chip but extra VCore contributes to electromigration which in turn decreases the life of the chip. Therefore, think before you act. An unreasonable amount of VCore, although it stabilizes the chip, may eventually end it's life preemptively.
You must record each successful iteration of FSB/VCore so this way when you encounter an irreperable failure you can revert back to the fastest previous FSB with the correct VCore

  • What do I have to take a look at?

    Hello!
I'm going to buy a used G5 Quad tomorrow.
What do I have to check? I don't want to buy a fawlty one. Are there any software tests you could recommend? Or any typical G5 diseases? What do I have to check?
    Thanks in advance!

How much access will you have to the computer? How much time? There's many tests you could do but I am not sure some owner will be patient or willing enough to let you run them while standing there. For example, you could re-format the drive with writing zeros once to check for errors, but of course that might take several hours and will wipe out all the files in the process.
Maybe take a spare drive and test the USB and Firewire ports seem to be working.
Make sure they give you the original discs that came with the computer. Legally these go with the computer and have utilities you will need such as Apple Hardware Test (which you could also run if the owner is patient). If the computer is coming with an upgraded OS you should also receive discs for that OS version. A licensing requirement as well as necessary should you need to re-install the OS.
Check all the keys on the keyboard work.
Check the computer works with a monitor even if it isn't supplied.
Take a CD and a DVD and see if they play. Perhaps even a blank one to test burning. One of the first things to fail on a computer is the optical drive.
Run Apple System Profiler and make sure the computer has in it what you expecct in terms of RAM and HD, cards, etc.
If the computer is on when you arrive make sure you shut it down, unplug it for a few minutes, then start it (don't just restart). Issues sometimes arise at this stage, due to weak PRAM battery or power supply. Check the clock (dead PRAM battery will lose time).

  • Aargh!  What do I have to do to speed up this thing???

    Hi,
Hopefully someone can help me. I'm using the trial version of Lightroom 1.0 and have tried everything to speed this thing up but nothing is working. This application would be absolutely brilliant if it weren't so dog slow. The whole point is to speed up the workflow but at this rate the time wasted is thoroughly frustration.
Okay, what's happening. First, when I'm in the Library module culling photos, there are all kinds of little issues but the two big ones for me are when I delete a file, the entire library resets itself to I don't know what kind of sequence. Delete a file and Lightroom jumps to a different file order and lands on a file that wasn't the next one in the sequence. So I have to close Lightroom and reopen it to have the files sorted the way they originally were when I was working on them. This I just don't understand.
Also, in the Library module, going from file to file, I am always getting the "Working..." thing coming up so it takes several seconds for each pic to come up. WAY too slow. When in the Develop module, I am constantly getting the "Loading..." thing coming up. This slows everything down to a snail's pace and is frustrating!!
I have tried all the tips I could find here and on Lightroom Extra (fabulous site BTW!). I have turned XMP off, moved my Library to a faster drive, rendered standard previews to larger than my screen size on import, and rendered 1:1 previews. None of these changes have done anything for the speed. Why???
What else can I do? I have 2 megs of RAM and a fast enough system that I can easily run multiple other photo processing applications simultaneously without any speed problems at all. So what is the problem with Lightroom? I had been trying out Beta 4.1 with exactly the same issues. I thought Lightroom 1.0 would solve these but alas, I am in the same predicament. I have tried it on 2 different computers and have the same problem.
Can anyone help? What do I need to do to speed this thing up to workable speeds? I would really like to use this application and would be ready to buy it now if I could be sure this isn't the speed (or lack thereof) that I will be faced with on a regular basis.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Go to sysinternals.com and download "Process Explorer". Install this to some reasonable location.
When Lr seems to be wedged, switch to Process Explorer and choose the Lightroom process in the top frame. This will show all the associated subprocess, threads, memory use, open files. Basically everything about this process.
You can save a snapshop of the Lightroom process, as well. In my work it helps if customers take a few snapshots over 1-2 minutes and send them in. I don't know if Adobe has their own way of doing this.
This app also helps you look for any other processes that might be there you are not aware of. So many apps and drivers install little "helper" processes that may interact poorly with other processes. I'd certainly turn off any "real time" virus protection if you have it enabled. No virus checker is ever 100% accurate, and running one is always a trade-off between security and convenience. At least keep it from scanning your Lightroom library directory. There may be other suspect apps that can be inspected with this tool.
Some notes based on what I've read so far:
    - XP and OS X users please, please, please do NOT "defrag" your hard drive. You do not need to do it. Modern file systems already know how to lay down files optimally over time, as long as you have some free space and memory available. In fact, you may be making things _worse_ since a defrag may move files around from the "hot" areas that NTFS and HFS+ maintain to make file retrieval faster.
There are some rare cases where a defrag is necessary, but few of us here will hit those cases. Let the filesystem and OS do the job it is designed to do. Instead, take that time and go work on some photos!
    - OS X users, what do you have in your Startup Items? Why? Windows users, why so many things in your Taskbar? Clean that cruft up. Many of these little apps that come with device drivers are poorly written little value-add widgets that do not give you much, may not be the best written app and may simply interact poorly with other apps. Minimize the chances of this happening by at least disabling or removing most of them while testing Lightroom for performance problems. This is part of moving from the known to the unknown to solve problems in a logical manner.
    - Make sure you have enough free space on your main partition(s). Different filesystems have different requirements, but a modern OS needs a decent chunk of free space (it does NOT have to be contiguous) and a chunk of memory to maintain a proper caching file system. A hand-waving value is make sure you have some smaller percentage free /at least/. Of course, those of us with big drives have to worry less, even done to 1%!

I am well aware that the iPod Touch 4G is supposed to have 256MB of ram, but when using ram checking applications, I can barely get 90. I have had the iPod since it launched, but have taken good care of it. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Anything I can do?

The apps tell you how much free RAM you have, not how much total physical RAM the iPod has.

  • Want to have 2gb of ram which type of ram do i get?

I have a cd mbp 2.16ghz 15.4" with the 1gb of ram. i want to have 2 gb but dont want to order from apple to expensive. what is the ram that is already in the mbp oem. all i want to buy is 1gb of ram= dual channel to make 2x1gb and do i need to have the same company or can i go buy mushkin ram or w/e.
    MBP CD 15.4" 2.16ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB, 100GB 7200RPM

Depends, is your current gig 1x1gb or 2x512? If its the latter, than you'll need to buy 2 sticks instead of one.
OWC and NewEgg have the best prices although I give a higher recommendation to OWC for not only having good prices, but have mac-specific ram as well as impressive instructional videos on installing hardware. • I can't find out what motherboard I have for my HP Pavilion 15t-n200

    Hi
I have a HP Pavilion 15t-n200 and I can't find out what motherboard I have . I have been searching for answers for days now and have decided to come to the forums.
    The specs are:
    i5-4200u 1.6 GHz - 2.3 Ghz
    8GB DDR3 RAm/Memory
    64-bit Operating System
    Windows 8.1
If anyone could help me find out what mother boar I have that would be great.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
    See Page 20
You have one of these boards depending on which video chip you have and which version of Windows. The processor is soldered to the board.
    Intel Core i5-4200U 740M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Standard 736377-501
    Intel Core i5-4200U 740M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Professional 736377-601
    Intel Core i5-4200U 840M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Standard 751494-501
    Intel Core i5-4200U 840M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Professional 751494-601
    Intel Core i5-4200M 840M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Standard 754312-501
    Intel Core i5-4200U 8670M 1.6-GHz (2 GB DC BGA 15 W) for use with Windows Professional 754312-601
So look at device manager under Display adapter and do you have regular Windows 8.1 or 8.1 Pro?
Why do you need to know what model motherboard you have?

  • How do I know what OS I have on mu iMac? I've used it as a PC for years and need to switch over but I may be out of date with current software.  I think I read Lion somewehere....?

How do I know what OS I have on my iMac? I've used it as a PC for years and need to switch over but I may be out of date with current software.  I think I read Lion somewehere....?  OS 10.5.8

Click on the Apple icon at the top left of your menu bar, then About this Mac.
OS 10.5.8 is Leopard. Lion is 10.7
    As for upgrading:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
