What if my new drive i want to restore is smaller than original?

i have a new Mac Book Pro and want to restore from time machine backup from old Mac Book Pro, but the new hard drive is smaller than the previous one and doesnt have enough room for the time machine restore. How do I resolve this issue?

migrate over ONLY the data you need, personal files pic, docs, etc.
Realistically do you need everything from same?
What you dont use often, keep as a backup or archive on an external USB HD

If you ever registered it with adobe, you can get your serial number by going to the main page of adobe.com and looking for My Adobe. Work through the links there and you can retrieve your serial number from your adobe store account.

How do I find the ipad password?

What password are you refering to? A passcode lock on the ipad itself or the password for your apple id?

what can i do when i want to restore if i have deleted my text message(sms)...

Provided you have recently synced you phone then the SMS are stored in the iPhone backup made by iTunes during the sync process. If you restore you can choose to restore from backup which should mean that you don't lose the SMS.

  • Restore on new drive: Time Machine versus "Restore" via Disk Utility

I am about to install a new 240GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G (6Gb/s) SSD into the main drive bay of my MacBook Pro, moving the original Apple-installed 120GB 3G (3Gb/s) SSD into the optical bay using an OWC "Data Doubler."
I have my entire Mac OS X Yosemite install, all apps, and all data (that is, the entire contents of the original SSD) backed up to an external Time Machine backup drive.
I'll want to make the new SSD in the main bay my bootable drive, restoring my original SSD's system to the new SSD. The original SSD will then be erased.
Question is, what are the differences between these two restore strategies:
    1. Restore from Time Machine to the new SSD
    2. "Restore" via Disk Utility, using my original SSD (in the optical bay) as the "Source" and the new SSD (in the main bay) as the "Destination"
Are there any fundamental difference between these two approaches? Such as:
    - Is one faster than the other?
    - Does one involve more or less risk in some settings or such being "lost in translation" and needing to be reset?
    - Would both methods of restore include a recovery partition on the new SSD?
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011, Macbook8,3) | 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 | Yosemite 10.10.2

Thanks Kappy - to clarify / confirm: are you saying that the "Restore from Time Machine" approach would *not* include the Recovery HD (and, possibly inferring, that under that approach, getting the Recovery HD would be possible but would require an additional step)?

  • (new drive) Doing a full restore from time machine backup

I wanted to replace my old drive with a new larger drive. Once the blank new drive is in the imac, how does one do a full system restore to the new blank drive? Is that possible? And before removing that old drive, should I first do some other type of time machine backup manually? Do I need to do a final FULL backup first? And can time machine do a full restore to a new blank drive, restoring everything as before?

Hi randy, you don't say which OS version you're on.
Very best would be an actual clone to another external drive you can boot from.
Likely you'll need to Format the new drive first...

  • DVD Drive broken on Macbook Pro.  Want to restore laptop to its original state.

Hi, I want to restore my macbook pro to its default state.  My dvd drive does not work, but I do have the discs that came with it.  Is there a way to reinstall using an external dvd drive?

    MDhennin wrote:
do I just plug in the external and it will automatically pop up?
you will want a ODD that supports dual-layer DVDs such as this one. it will not pop-up unless a CD/DVD is inserted but will be selectable as source/destination in apps such as Toast, iDVD, etc.

  • I'm installing a new hard drive and wanted to restore it from Time Machine. When I restart w/ "command" /"R" it returns to orig. startup disk.

I'm trying to load a new harddrive using timemachine when I restart the Macpro using "command"/ "R" keys it restarts to orig. startup disk and not to restore option.

If you installed a brand new hard disk, there is no recovery partition. OS X Internet Recovery should enable you to boot with ⌘ R but this does not work on all Macs, just ones with updated firmware that enables this function. Yours may predate that ability.
    Read this: from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Some computers that did not ship with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed may have a software update available that allows them to use Lion Internet Recovery.
Therefore, without a recovery partition, your 2008 MBP cannot boot OS X Internet Recovery.
Boot from your original system installation disc, then restore from your Time Machine backup. It will create the recovery partition on your new HD.
Time Machine backup volumes are also bootable, so you should be able to boot from the TM volume using Startup Manager. Connect the TM volume then an Option key while starting the MBP.

  • Does new 30 GB iPod have longer battery life than original 5th gen 30

The claim from Apple is that the new 30 GB iPod has a brighter screen and that the battery life during video playback is 3.5 hours. The original 5th generation 30 GB ipod only claimed to have 2 hour battery life during video playback. Does anyone know if the new 30 GB iPod actually has a better battery or a more efficieant screen than the original or if these claims are only a result of the new iPod bios (version 1.2) which gives you a brightness control. Is a new 30 GB iPod better than a original 5th gen 30 GB iPod which has been updated to v 1.2?
AMD64   Windows XP Pro   5th Gen 60 GB iPod Video

Let me first not say Ha ha but The fourth Gen photo people said the same thing about when the fifth gen came out and we all complained. Also now that gapless playback has come out we all complained. So all I have to say is that at least you got the quick letter thing when you scroll and the games as well as gapless where we got nothing. I have owned an Ipod since the first gen and let me say I am supprised that apple even gave you guys some update. For all of your complaining, get in line.

  • I want to restore my iMac to original settings. Help needed

    Alright guys.
I am going to sell my iMac, therefore I would like to restore it to factory settings. However I have lost the discs that came with it.
I have been having a look online for replacment but there are a few different options and I want to make sure that I purchase the correct version.
I believe the model number for my Mac is MB323LL/A.
On the online spec it says it is installed with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.
Does it have to be restored with this exact version, or is the 10.6 version ok? Also, I've seen that there are a few differnt variations of intsall disc, so I'm a little confused.
If anyone could point me in the right direction then that would be great.
    Thanks very much

Call Apple and request a replacement install DVD. It is part of the Mac and should be included when you sell it. They will charge a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 question....moving photos to new drive....because old drive full.

I have a external hard drive that is almost full......what is the best way to get photos moved from this drive .....to a new and larger external hard drive?

I would  like to move my entire catalogue from one external drive (that is almost full) to a new external drive with more room.  I have several drives with back ups of all photos.....so are you saying Move it.........using the Move from the drop down menus and move it from the old to the new drive.....and not restore it from a back up drive to the new drive?
The backup/restore process moves not only the picture files library, but also the catalog.
That's good especially if you want to share catalog and librarty with another computer.
If you prefer the default location for catalogs on your desktop, no problem. Simply use the catalog manager to move the catalog.
The drag and drop solution works:
Organizer: Moving folder trees or branches - Elements Village
(Sorry, I gave a wrong link in my previous post ...)
It's more flexible and reasonably safe. It looks faster, but if you want to be safe and do a backup first,  you'll gain nothing.
The problem with moving folders is the same than when you move folder trees from the explorer: be sure to move in an empty master folder to avoid folder names collisions.
If you want the catalog folder in the same external drive as the moved library, be sure to have the catalog folder outside of your library tree.
