What In Gods Name Is The Hole in The Heatspreader For?!

Hello, I just purchased my first ever intel processor.  (My hand-me-down P100 doesnt count) I have had a Duron and two athlons, and have used amd all of my life.  Now, about this heatspreader on my 2.4C, WHAT IN GODS NAME IS THE HOLE THERE FOR?!  I am really worried, that i might get my thermal paste in therem and short the processor.  Its this stuff i got from the local pc shop, and not until i was driving home did i realize that on the side of the syringe, it said "10% Silver"  i was like ?!  At first, i was like, ok i didnt want this, then i was like, schweet, arctic silver lol, for $1.61!  YES lol, 1.0Grams of it, then i was like, , wut if i short something?!  Now i put it on my vga card (5200 NU) cuz that dont have a HOLE IN IT, but if it oozes into the heatspreader hole, my proc is gone, as in $157.  Umm, NOT GOOD.  How much do i need for a P4, just a fair sized blob in the middle, and let the H/S spread it?  Thats what i'd imagine, i dont like spreading my paste around with a credit card, i like it to spread itself around.  Im new to this....so, have some sympathy lol.  Its just bugging me, "WHAT is that HOLE?"
Thanks,
-Nick

Guess again
So I guess I was partially correct in my speculation.....After Googling
Quote
The hole in the P4's heat spreader is a result of the manufacturing process. The IHS is glued to the processor substrate with epoxy at the Intel plant. The hole allows gases and pressure to escape while the epoxy cures. Without the hole the pressure would deform the epoxy bond and make the connection between substrate and IHS uneven.

Letter from Intel in a post here http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread23750-1.html
I would imagine without it, the trapped air, and gases, would cause separation of the heatspreader from the ceramic, once the CPU is put in use.

  • HT4619 What is the hole under the power cord for?

Wondering how to turn my iMac back on after a power surge.  Happened once before and was able to reset it by unplugging cord, holding down start button, then reattaching power cord and pressing the start button again.  This only worked when I took it to the Mac outlet store though.  When I try this, it doesn't work.  Outlets and power source (aps) have power.  Trying to avoid a trip with my 27" iMac to the store.
is the hole under the power cord a reset?
    Thanks

    Deborah,
Here are the specific steps for performing a SMC reset just so it's clear (note bolded bits):
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Dave
P.S. If this doesn't work, repeat the process again only bypassing your APS conditioner completely this time using a standard AC wall outlet for testing/powering your mac. The APS unit may have an internal fault of some sort.

  • What is the hole to the left of the receiver in the face of my iPhone 5?

I recently purchased an iPhone 5 from Bell Canada. I see both the 2 hole and 3 hole configuration pictured in manuals but can't find an explanation for this 3rd hole. The screen protectors I purchased cover it up. Does that matter?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi, what is the little hole we see 2 millimiters above the frontal camera of iPad 2?

    Probably the light sensor.

  • How can i get a pebble out of the hole for the headphones?

This afternoon i tried listening to my iPod, but when i was trying to put the headphones in the hole in the iPod it wouldnt let me put the headphones in and i looked and there was a pebble in there, which is pushed even deaper inside the whole for the headphones. i tried banging it on the table or my hand , anywhere and its not coming out, my warranty ended in October, so i dont no what to do.

you could try using a vacuum hose. hold on to your iPod really tight, turn on the vaccum and hold the headphones jack up to the vaccum until it comes out. just a suggestion. don't know from personal experience whether it will work. good luck, though!

  • My iPod glass is crack and the headset hole got very big and I cannot hear music from the headset but the headset work on other device

My iPod fell on the floor and the glass was crack also, the hole that the headset plug into got so big I cannot hear a sound from it. The headset work on other devices, what should I do?.

kaz-k, the warranty is irrelevant. A broken screen is not coverd by the warranty and void the warranty on the entire iPod.
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours. I would say not worth it for a 2G iPod

    Hello.
I have some suggestions for the image processing component of your application. I have attached a Vision Assistant script to this post (Vision Assistant 7.1) which performs essentially the following steps. These steps could be followed in any programming environment and should yield decent results:
Extract the Luminance plane from the RGB image (simply to get it into 8-bit mono format for the thresholding. Could be done with a color threshold VI).
Threshold the image so that the bright components are left and the dark is set to 0.
Perform a particle filter to remove the particles that are too large (the surrounding area).
Perform a particle analysis on the remaining particles, which should be the holes in the
plate only. Set the particle analysis to return the Location of the 'Center of Mass X' and 'Center of Mass Y,' and the perimeter (diameter).
This type of processing would allow the plate to be rotated, have different patterns, etc. and you should still be able to get the information about the holes.
    Hope this helps.

  • I just bought an IPOD Touch 5th and just realized that there is no place  to insert it into a Bose Docking Station to play the music from the IPOD thru the Bose, any suggestions.  The 4th Generation had a larger hole to connect to the docking station.

I just purchased a new IPOD Touch 5th and use a BOSE Docking Station.  I just realized this new IPOD does not have the hole in the bottom to
place it on the Docking Station like the IPOD 4 did.  Do you have any suggestions?  Does this not dock?

There are adapters that are available in the iTunes store.

  • Iphone 4 with half a hole in the headphone Jack HELP

Hi I need some help i have a new iphone 4 that after 4 days i tried to plug in the headphones to discover they would not slide in all the way. I took to a apple distributor near home and they tested it and looked closer to find that there appeared to be something in the hole or the hole was half formed. My provider took the phone for repair/replace and now say i put something in the hole and will charge me to fix it.
Has amyone else ever had this problem as they are saying it has never happened before.

In UK by law you can just send back within 14 days with no charge except any calls made
May be different in your country
Still seems very strange- and your sure you dont have a headphone socket with a piece missing on end?
Dont do this but I may try getting a thin piece of plastic and putting a tiny bit of superglue on then press it onto this bit in hole then wait and then pull, only a suggestion...

  • HT1688 I am trying to find answers about how to use the earphones that came with my new iPhone 4s. Does this work similarly as a Bluetooth or do I need to still buy one. The printing in the manual is SOOO small, it is too hard to read!

Does anyone know how to use the earphones( plugs) that come with iPhones?
Mine is still fairly new and I am just learning how to use certain things.

They're pretty straightforward. You plug them into the headset jack (the hole on the top left of your phone). You put the buds in your ears. All sounds, except for the phone ringing will now come through the earbuds.

  • How to I introduce the SIM card (the card that provides internet access) in to the 3G IPAD 1 version

i do not know how to enter into the ipad the card that the internet provider gives you to make the ipad wifi 3G work.

The sim tray that holds the micro-sim card has a little hole near it. You insert the tool that came with the iPad into the hole and the sim tray releases so you can insert the sim.
If you are missing the little sim tool, you can use a small paper clip, but be careful and gently put it in straight until the tray releases.

  • IPod plays music through the speaker on the back

    Hi,
My new iPod nano 5th generation seems to play music through the back speaker for the camera and voiceover options. When i plug in my headphones, it will play through those, as well as the speaker, but even when I unplug the headphones, it plays through it still. This is annoying to the people around me to hear. Does anyone know how to fix it, i've gone through the settings on my iPod but I can't seem to figure how to turn it off and only have the music play through my headphones. Anybody have the same problem? How do I fix it?
Thanks so much for your help.

Is the speaker really on the back? I had been trying to figure out where the sound was coming out, and thought I had narrowed it down to the hole where the earplugs plug in. I tend to lay my iPod down on its back, and it doesn't seem to muffle the sound.
Cutie962, I don't know about sound in general through non-iPod earphones, but in order to use the radio, you need the right earphones, because the antenna is in the cord. I can't use the delivered ones, because either I just don't know how to use them or my ears are the wrong shape - they just fall out immediately. I was trying to figure out which ones Apple sells also have the antenna for the radio, but they don't seem to list that information. I kind of like the pink ones that hook over the ear, but it would be a waste if they won't work.

  • What in God's name is it with Safari 4.0.3 Tiger and iTunes 9.0.1?

This concatenation of "maybe-it'll-work-THIS-time" software crudpacks has been the most time-wasting, anti-productivity experience I've had in 20 years of owning Macs. I now have iTunes 9.0.1 working, but I have no idea how I got it to happen. None of my THREE installs of iTunes 9.0.1 has included an "iTunes Media Folder," don't know why, but thank God. My latest joy has to do with the System Requirements Apple insists upon for iTunes 9.0.1 running on Tiger 10.4.11:
    iTunes 9.0.1/Safari 4.0.3 Tiger/Quicktime 7.6.4/Security Update (the latest one)
I have everything installed EXCEPT Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. Why? That's what I'm trying to find out.
FOUR times now I've downloaded -- from Apple's download site -- the dmg of Safari 4.0.3 Tiger. FOUR times I've gone through the entire install sequence with no error messages or glitches, FOUR times I've restarted to "finish installing the software, and FOUR times no Safari application or related files has shown up on my drive. Could someone explain this?

I'm terribly sorry to have taken up your valuable time, but many "Upgrades" install the entire program, whether a previous version was installed or not (just today, I upgraded Photogrid X, for which I have a license, WITHOUT a copy of the previous PhotoGridX anywhere on my drive. A miracle of modern science!). Many "Upgrades" that require a previously-installed version either tell you so in the documentation (Apple says NOTHING on their download page* about requiring a previous version of Safari), on the install splash screen, or at some point in the install process. Pretty stupid of me, but even more stupid (and arrogant) of Apple, who apparently operate on the belief that if you use a Mac, you use Safari. I loathe Safari, which has been a crippled browser from the get-go, in my opinion. In addition to that, even before the dreaded update, my example of Safari was locking up all over the place, and refusing to display, for instance, eBay photo galleries created in Vendio -- which is the image-hosting service I use. Why would I keep Safari on a limited-space notebook hard drive if I didn't use it? If Apple required it for the installation of the latest "upgrade, " why didn't they say so in their "requirements*" blurb?
No, "'FOUR times' does not count as troubleshooting facts, nor was it intended to do so. Losing a week in downtime isn't a troubleshooting fact, either, but that's hardly the point. To have a piece of software that can't install without a previous version being present, and not having a warning in the documentation, is an unnecessary waste of my time, and--I know I'm not the ONLY moron that uses a Mac -- the time of many other people.
*Apple's Safari 4.0.3 DL page REQUIREMENTS:
    Macintosh Requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 or Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Security Update 2009-002
Mac with an Intel processor or a Power PC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire®
    256MB of RAM
Top Sites and Cover Flow on Mac OS X Tiger require a Quartz-Extreme compatible video card.
Do YOU see anything in there about requiring a previous version of Safari to install?
Here's a deal -- next time you see a post from me, just ignore it. I'd hate for you to waste your time on a rant.
And OH YES, I realize you're volunteers here -- sometimes it's painfully obvious. Do you realize that MY time is valuable -- though obviously not nearly as valuable as yours?
