What in the world is going on with this line

I recently became a Verizon Online subscriber a few short months ago and have been having the strangest issues with my service. First with the basics, 3 Mbps line with a direct Ethernet connection into the supplied Westell modem. I would place my computer knowledge on the high end of the scale as well.
 As for the problems, my service always drops when it rains. I figured it would come back up, but I’ve waited 3-4 days before and nothing changed. My DSL light on the modem consistently blinks and the Internet light never once turns on. Then I am forced to call tech support and contemplate suicide for 40 minutes and the problem goes unsolved. I didn’t expect them to solve it, I just wanted someone to come out and physically look at the line outside. Here is the kicker, once I get a service request and disconnect from tech support my Internet always comes back on within 10 minutes. I called less than an hour ago and soon as I hung up set the stop watch on my phone and sure enough 2 minutes and 34 seconds after the call was ended, I am connected online again. It happened just like this when I was offline for 3 days as well. I am only connected at 608 Kbps currently, though. It has happened all 4 times I have received a service request, what gives? When the technician comes out they always tell me the same story “Well it would be easier to track down if you had no connection at all.”
 The last service guy replaced the connection that goes into my apartment, what should I suggest be done this time? Why does my connection always seem to mysteriously come back on directly following a service request? It is beyond the realm of coincidence.  

I believe that when Vz runs a line test over your dsl copper lines, there is actually a current being passed over the lines for the purpose of getting an electrical reading on the lines. The line test itself may change the conductivity of the copper wires in a positive way, thus after the line test is run you are able again to get a connection.
Do you have Vz telephone landline service as well? Do you hear static on the phone at times when it rains and the DSL goes out?
If you are a Vz landline customer, you may consider calling into 1-800 Verizon and when the system prompts you, ask for Tech Support/Repair for phone service. When you get to an agent, explain the problems you are asking and ask if you line from your apt to the central office has been changed. If not ask if they will do that to resolve this issue. It is not 100% guaranteed it will clear it, but it may.

  • What in the world is going on with my battery????

    100% this morning, took it to work (I drive around all day in my city). I have 3g and Edge on.
    At 80%, I had a usage of 1 hour, 6 minutes. Perfect, that's 6 minutes more than what apple states I should get.
    At 60%, I had a usge of 2 hours, 9 minutes. Again, excellent.
    At 40%, I had a usage of a little under 3 hours. Still good.
    Then I get home. I sit my phone on my desk, don't change anything (I always have 3g and edge on, no wifi). 20 minutes later I check my phone and it has drained 10% (at 30% now with 3 hours, 1 minute of usage). I sleep the phone and check it 10 minutes later and it's at 22%. Now it's currently at 5% with 3 hours, 5 minutes of usage.
    What is going on???? All day, my usage was perfect. I was getting right around what apple states I should get on 3g. I was on 3g all day, except for maybe a couple times where it switched to edge for a few seconds. I use "system activity monitor" every hour to kill all running apps in the background and free up memory. Nothing change in my usage habits except I was now home. I'm confused.

    4. If you are still not seeing any improvements, let the battery drain out until it turns off by itself. Then recharge it using AC socket until it is 100% fully charged. Keep everything turned off with aeroplane mode on while you are charging it.

  • What In The World Is Going On With NBA League Pass Not Being In HD

    I just read a article posted on Dec 21 about "Indemand" recentrly upgrading their systems to carry more content in HD.

    The upgrade was supposed to effect NBA League Pass in providing the game in HD rather than just having one HD Channel. But last night I noticed on Fios that nothing has changed. I was looking forward to buying NBA league Pass this year but I refuse to pay the same fee that other cable systems like AT&T Uverse & Direct Tv are charging top carry league pass in HD in comparison to Standard Def Fios is providing me. 
    I have been following this forum and news on other sites and have yet to see Verizon Fios put out any Press Release about NBA League Pass.

  • What In the world is going on with my java?

    Alright so i have been fine using java and mountain lion(latest version), until today.  I decided i wanted to use netbeans IDE instead of eclipse because i like it better for what i am doing.  I was informed that i didn't have the latest version of java when i tryed to install it.  well that can't be true because i go to system preferences and in the about it says java 7 update 15, which is the latest right now.  so i go to terminal and type "java -version" and it tells me i have java 7 update 4.  it also turns out that there are two folders with java in them in the two locations:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework
    /System/Library/Java
    can someone tell me why this is.  should it be this way.  what do i need to do to simplify java as much as possible.  i want to have the latest version always, beable to run programs that use the latest version of java, and i would like to beable to develop java applications in my choice of IDE (netbeans).

  • Plz help me figure out what in the world is going on with my iTunes!!

    QuickTime Handler Window: iTunes.exe - Bad Image
    complete error message:
    The application or DLL c:\...\iTunes\...\Mplugin.dll is not a valid Windows image. PLease check against installation diskette.
    Things I have tried:
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes 6.05.02
    Uninstall and reinstall QuickTime 7.1
    Uninstall and reinstall BOTH itunes and QT (removing both before reinstalling either)
    Uninstall and reinstall both (the second time using the QT version that is not bundled with iTunes [read on another post])
    iTunes does eventually load, but starts the next song with EXACTLY 5 seconds left and plays the two songs concurrent. It does this on every song!!! I sync'ed my iPod to see if the newly added tracks were corrupt, but they play just fine if I disconnect the iPod. If I play a track from the iPod using iTunes, it will cut off the last 5 seconds, just like any track I attempt to play on iTunes. I know this violates a discussion group rule by listing two problems, but they both occured at the same time.

  • What in the world is going on with my MacBook?

    My MacBook Pro has been typing in all caps recently and instead of opening new tabs in chrome it is opening all new pages. Also everything like the swipe controls on the touchpad and lagging a ton. What happened? This just started within the last 2 days.

    Reset your SMC and PRAM.  If that doesn't fix it, then run the Apple hardware test. Report back on any errors.

    When i run this i get the file dialog to show which is great.
    However when i don't click on anything, don't choose a file and just let it stand there, the printouts i am seeing in the output are:

    after: 14not getting the middle "unfiling" print which makes sense since the call "showOpenDialog" should be blocking (as far as i know).
    but i'd also expect to not see the "after" print.

    I know it's a shot in the dark without a proper SSCCE, but hey I do what I want with my pause time!
    So, OP:
    - first, it is a very bad idea to spawn a dialog boxfrom a paint(Graphics) method (your paint method has no argument, but as you say it's an override I assume you forgot it).
    Paint(Graphics) is designed to, well, paint the component on screen, according to its current state.
    A paint(Graphics) method is also designed to be called on the event-dispatch-thread (EDT), which is dedicated to handle graphical events including "paint events", so it must execute quickly. In particular, business logic, file reading, and worst of all, waiting for user input, is not relevant in a paint() method.
    I am assuming repaint is being called again and again but since the dialog is opened from the eventqueue thread those repaint events should be ignored until the file is chosen no?You don't know if they are repaint(), or paintImmediately() calls. You could set a breakpoint in a debugger, or log the stack trace, to know where these paint(...) calls come from.
    I don't know the details, but opening a dialog (at least a modal one) from the EDT somehow suspends the "regular" EDT (the showOpenDialog() is a blocking call), and spawns a dedicated EDT (after all, the dialog itself needs to handle user events to detect press on OK/close/cancel). I don't know which is the extent (in terms of components covered) of the spawned EDT.
    I ackowledge it's surprising to see the (seemingly) same thread log these traces, as per this assumption some of the logs at least should be from another thread.
    But as you show only an extract of code, and apparently have modified the code during your experiments, I can't put too much faith into the code and log you posted. You'll probably have to provide this damn SSCCE to get more help.

  • What in the world is going on?

    I'm having trouble with making a DVD in iDVD6 on my Apple laptop. I decided to burn a copy of all 500 photos and put them on my iMAC and start making the DVD all over again.
    1st problem - I burned the images in the albums, along with burning the saved slideshow but after it's saved onto my iMAC there is no official saved slideshow with the double slide icon in front of the slideshoe. It only has the word "slideshow" typed in the description.
    #2 problem - When I highlight all the images and then click "slideshow" to make a savd slideshow it does indeed make the saved slideshow. The problem is 90% of the images show a gray screen with a dashed outlined square with an exclamation mark in the middle. But just for a second on each of these images the actual images flashes for a second and then the gray screen with the dashed outline appears. 10% of the images show up perfectly.
    No way in the world making one DVD for a friend should be this hard. I really appreciate all the help I receive here.

    Try the following:
    First download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Also select one of the original files in the Originals folder of the iPhoto Library folder and bring up the Info window - Command+I. Then select Preview as the default application, even if it's already showing reselect, and click on the Apply to all... button.
    If that doesn't help download iPhoto Library Manager, launch it and use the File->Rebuild library menu option to rebuild that library. Depending on the size of the library it could take a while, about 12 hours for a library of around 5000 photos.
    Question: are you creating the slideshow in iPhoto and sending it to iDVD? If you're just creating the slideshow in iDVD you can export those photos to a folder and then import that folder into iDVD. Saves going thru iPhoto. Might be a workaround if needed. Good luck.

  • CUCM Licenses - what in the world is going on?

    I'm utterly confused with my CUCM licensing and could really use some help.
    We have a CUCM 9.1.1 that is having user license issues. We previously had 30 CUWL Standard (9.0) licenses, but were running out, so I purchased 10 of the L-CUWL-ADDON-STDK9. Once I had installed them, it said I still had 30 Standard, but also 10 CUWL Premium. So right off the bat I'm wondering if this is right. 
    I'm being told in CUCM that I'm using too many licenses. My usage in CUCM is as follows:
    CUWL Standard: 3 used (3 users)
    Enhanced Plus: 21 user (21 users)
    Enhanced: 9 (9 users)
    Basic, essential and Telepresence Room: 0
    Note that when I click on the 21 Enhanced Plus Users, it gives me a report of these users. For some reason when I click on the Enhanced users, it just says "9 records found" and doesn't show me a list...
    In ELM, apparently the problem is my Enhanced Users. I see the following:
    CUWL Standard: 3 required, 30 installed, 0 unused
    Enhanced Plus: 21 required, 0 installed, 0 unused
    Enhanced:          9 required, 1 installed, -2 Unused
    So my questions are:
    -Can someone help me to understand how the math works, here?
    -Should I be assigning an additional device to the Enhanced users to make them Enhanced Plus users? Will that fix the issue?
    -What happened to my "CUWL Premium" licenses? How do they factor into this?
    -Why won't CUCM show me which users are using Premium licenses?

    2 for Enhanced would be showing out of compliance.

  • What in the world is going on ... Adobe gladly took my $1300 and now I can't download this 'download manager' which comes across as in Arabic and I can't get through to Adobe?

    Why is this such a series of hoops you have to jump through to deal with Adobe ... I am fairly disgruntled at this point ... and I still have no access to the product that I paid for.

  • What is the best approach for dealing with this issue?

    I have been advised by a mac expert that the computer should be left running except for extended periods or, as I have been doing, shut down at the end of each day/ Please explain the rationale for your response. Thanks

    On mactalk.com.au there was recently a thread on "When did you last shut down your Mac".
    A lot of people don't.
    Some people (which I think is mostly PC users converted to Mac, or old-timers who live in the past) do shut down daily.
    I myself have only shut my computer off when moving it physically, when there's an electrical storm, when I've been going on holidays, or when there's been some installation issue requiring a restart/coldstart. (I'm not counting "Restarts" for new software)
    OS X doesn't need to be shut down... though an occasional restart can be good for resetting things like virtual memory, etc.
    If you do leave it going, the CRON scripts only run if the computer is awake anyway (at like 3am in the morning), so if you set the computer to "sleep" after a time, then it's no different to shutting down in that regard.
    If you don't mind the extra time waiting for a boot up... then it doesn't really matter. If like me you're impatient, then don't shut down.

  • My computer no longer supports PC applications and so I cannot open all the documents I have made with Microsoft Word.  What is the best way to deal with this?

         I have tried to use "Pages" and find it difficult.  However, I have not taken the time to go through the tutorials.  I'm used to Word and don't really want to take the time to learn another word processing program unless it is superior to Word.  Should I download Microsoft Word or should I learn how to use "Pages".  (To learn "Pages" will take me twice as long as it will take someone under 50).  What say you?

    You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.

  • What is the best way to work with AVCHD 720 24p footage in FCE4.1?

    Hi I have a Panasonic HMC-150 and I've been shooting 720 24p footage at 21 mbps transfer rate.
    I was wondering what is the best way to work with this material in FCE 4.1? I see that in the easy set up menu they only have the option of 1440X1080i at 50 or 60 fps or 1920X1080i at 50 or 60 fps.
    Also in the rates drop down menu there is only 50 or 29.97.
    So I was wondering which is the best choice for 720 24p footage and will it look alright in any of them? Also is it possible to customize these settings?
    And finally can you work with faster transfer rates (21mbps) in FCE?

    Yikes, this is going to be tricky since FCE does not support native 24p editing.
    The work around for some of us is that AVCHD material that is 24p is often recorded to disc at 60i using telecine, in which case it can be editing at 29.97 frames per second, and then detelecined afterward for final export at 23.98 fps. The problem is that I think your camera actually records real 24p - not 24p packed into 60i. When you import the material from the camera what does QuickTime report the framerate as?
