What intermediate steps to take (updating from 3.6.20 to 14.0.1) to keep add-ons?

Just updated a Firefox installation from version 3.6.20 to version 14.0.1. (Yes, it's a big jump: this computer went several months without an Internet connection.)
''All but one'' of dozens of extensions and themes were absent from the list in 14: it's not that they were listed as ''disabled''; they weren't listed ''at all''. (So I went back to 3.6.20.)
I'm accustomed to the fact that, when you switch to a newer version of Firefox, some extensions also need to be updated—and some are completely incompatible and you have to find substitutes. But I've never had them all just ''disappear''.
My guess (really just a guess) is that I can have them migrate (even if disabled because of incompatibility) and remain in the list if I upgrade to some intermediate versions, rather than jumping straight from 3.6.20 to 14.0.1. '''Is this right? If it is, which stepping-stones should I bother to use?''' Trial-and-error of upgrading to every single intermediate version (it seems there are dozens) is not an appealing prospect. And I'm leery of simply installing the extensions anew, because some of them have folders full of personalized data, which I would like to continue to have accessible through the extensions.
The one extension that was still in the list after the update was Fox Splitter.

When you updates, how did you do it? Was it by downloading Firefox from getfirefox.com? Or using the internal updater to update Firefox?
I'd suggest doing the following:
First make sure Windows is all up to date.
Then, click on Help, and check for updates inside Firefox. Install any updates it finds (It might be Firefox 3.6.28, or Firefox 12)
After installing that update, repeat the Firefox check for updates. After you install a version higher than Firefox 4, you will have to click on About Firefox to check for updates.
If at any time during the update process, Firefox asks to update your add-ons, allow it.
Finally, once you have all your updates installed, go to your Addons manager and check for any updates.

When I tried to respond to the urgent notice to update to Firefox 5.0 for security reasons I was stopped by a screen that said "Incompatible Add-ons Found" It identified two add-ons, Move Media Player 1.0.0.07103010 and Real Player Browser Record Plugin 14.0.3 that would be disabled. It said that "as soon as they are "made compatible" Firefox will update and re-enable these add-ons" It is not clear who is to make them compatile. After updating to Firefox 9 I have lost all my Bookmarks and Add ons

Firefox updated it's self to version 9.0.1. When I opened Firefox all my bookmarks and add ons where gone.
I have searched the help section with no help.

This turned out to be the root cause for my problem. Simply renamed the
places.sqlite.corrupt file to places.sqlite and my profile (including bookmarks) worked again. Thanks!
By the way, I first noticed that something was wrong with my _profile_ when, in addition to lost bookmarks, I noticed that I couldn't create _new_ bookmarks. Also was not able to restore bookmarks from a backup .json file. So I created a new profile, and was able to restore the bookmarks from the original profile's backup. That led me to exploring your suggestion. Thanks again!

Thanks for the link fortunegreen- it's hard to find updates as not much communication is coming from BC on official channels (blog, twitter, emails etc).
From the recording it sounds like there is no roadmap....and with Liquid rollout taking up the rest of the year, not much is going to change to the product until sometime in 2015. A list of options (below) was offered to the attendees of Max to poll on....I do hope the request for input from partners is going to be wider than that if it's going to influence development decisions.

2. Start rewriting modules on top of REST APIs and open platform
3. Fix e-commerce - taxes, stripe, shipping etc
4. Visual e-mail marketing editor
5. Build a mobile app to enable end-users to manage their business from phone

I was glad to see the attendees voted strongly for e-commerce developments (50% - proving it's fallen way behind expectations), and intersted to see in the comments that many thought AWS hadn't offered any significant improvements, if anything it's been unreliable.
Ultimately it's still worrying that there is no mention of BC from the core Adobe presentations, and with a full BC site subscription being close to that of Creative Cloud, it's surprising that there is not more investment in BC...it seems a very small team (working incredibly hard no doubt, but still requiring the help of partners to explain and present the recent developments) and this is probably the main reason why things are moving so slow. There simply isn't resource.
I hope we'll see some better communication from BC on what's happening soon, and that a voting system can be anabled partner-wide to steer future developments.

hi dale, yes everybody's had issues - we're just too bored and tired with the whole buggy mess to respond. just read some of the messages by rohan, armag.,ishwartz and stash to get the picture.
if it works great already, keep it going and add the upgrades cautiously.
stick the new stuff on its own drive and thrash it, day in day out, until you trust it. don't leave yourself without a back door (os9 is mine).

You should really read the manual.
Open itunes. Connect iphone.
Go to the apps tab. Select what you want.
Sync.

What we use to take date from user

I want to make a simple form in that one field is Date of birth for that i don't know what is affectively use i want that field like this(../../....) the dot wil be filled by the user and then date stored in the database.

You should do 2 things:
Don't let the user in doubt how to format the date. The best way is to give it 3 separate text fields with unmistakable lables instead of a single text field.
Convert the given parts to Date type immediatly and store it in database as Date and not as varchar.

Updating from 7.6 to 8.2 for new Nano; keep getting "key" errors

Got my daughter a Nano. Says we have to have 8.0 or better for it to work. We have 7.6. Tried installing thru Apple Update but it kept getting an error after the download saying "invalid signature" and removed the download. Saw a topic that said to download 8 directly from the web and install. Have done that but now get numerous "could not write value to key" errors and finally a "could not open key" error that rolled back the entire install. Any suggestions?

Are you installing from the admin account you originally used to install iTunes? If not switching to that might help.
But when you get problems with access to registry keys you can fix the registry permission problem with the following link:

It looks a bit daunting, but many people have used it successfully. It does take a long time to run so be patient with it.
One point I notice it says you can get your user name fro documents & settings, mostly this is true, but not always. You can get it from the task manager or in control panel>>User accounts

Hi kshikuma. This happens to me sometimes, as well.
To solve this issue, open the Windows Task Manager by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Go to the "Processes" tab and see if a process named "firefox.exe" or "plugin-container.exe" is opened. Close any and all such processes by right-clicking them and selecting "End Process".
