Yes it appears to be something on the network, however I haven't added any devices and don't own any PCs!  I've had the same network configuration for some time - this device has just appeared.
I was hoping someone else might have seen this device ID before as I certainly did not add it knowingly.

If you are using an unsecured or shared wireless network, then it could be just another user's computer name. If your sharing settings are correct, you have no worry. However, It would appear that at least some of the other user's settings are less than optimal inasmuch as his/hers is openly being displayed.
The next time you check into a hotel and use their wireless network, you are likely to see a number of other user's computers. Some just the name, as they share no files. While others are wide open, and their file sharing is on.

What is the longest you have waited before the find my ipod has located it on the map?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Generally it's less than a minute, however when the device can't be located (maybe its on a train in a tunnel, or it's turned off), it can be any length of time.

  • When i looked in my HD under shared it says "jareds macbook" does this mean someone is logging onto my HD?

in my hard drive there is a drop down titled "shared" and under that it is listed somone elses name. Why is this there and how do i remove this? I do not know this person and what does it mean?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It means that someone else is sharing your network.
How are you connecting? Do you have a wireless router and/or modem? You need to enable encryption (a password) for your network.

  • FF 5 running on windows 7 has suddenly stopped allowing access to comcast mail, but this is not a problem under Snow Leopard

I am running the latest version of firefox on a windows 7 laptop and Mac desktop. The windows version was allowing access to comcast email until it suddenly stopped. It won't let me open any email on the summary page or view the entire inbox. Opening firefox in safe mode does not eliminate the problem. I have no problem accessing comcast mail on the MAC or with Chrome, Safari or IE on the laptop.

    Hi Steve1904,
So you have use the backup and Restore to restore your files from Windows XP to Windows 7 directly?
This should be considered not work.
If you would like to transfer files between Windows XP and Windows 7, you need another tool called Windows Easy Transfer.
See the article below if you would like to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7
If possible, follow the steps there, then things should be OK.

  • Full file name under desktop icon, not a finder window.

Hello, is it possible to have icons/dirs on the desktop display their entire name without ellipses? Don't care about /path.
    Thank-you,
    Dennis

    Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>
defaults write com.apple.finder FXDesktopLayoutGridCharCount -int 50
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'</pre>
Then restart the "Finder" by clicking on its "Dock" icon.
You can try different numbers other than "50" until you find a value that suits your preferences.
Edit: oops, too slow I guess.

  • Issue with sharing icon not in Finder (1st gen MB & newest MBP)

I've searched the forums and am not sure what to look for.
Problem: unable to find my friend's late model MBP (Leopard) in my finder. i own a first gen MB with the Snow Leopard upgrade.
    1. i've checked the file sharing access on both computers and we have it checked to be able to access (read & write) to both our drop boxes.
    2. i have no issues connecting to the network, we are the only 2 computers sharing a network through the Airport Express. (i had no problems with OS 10.4 Tiger)
    3. i use to open the finder window to connect to his MBP to put files into his dropbox but am now unable to find his computer in my shared section of my finder window. i went to "networks" to look also but found 0 items also.
i tried going to the terminal window in utilities and did the CMD + SHIFT + K but didn't see anything here either.
He is able to see me in his shared section of his finder and was able to access my drop box with no problems.
What am i doing wrong? how can i access his MBP computer or any other computer (PC based) if i am unable to connect or see anything in my finder side tab?
i read i can manually do it but am unsure how to obtain the other person's IP. or is there a simpler method to do this?
    Thanks for everyone's help.

How would i find the other computer's IP address? Sorry I'm not familiar with how to look for that. thanks for the info i appreciate the help.
Hopefully Apple comes through with an update that fixes all the bugs in Snow Leopard.

Looks like a bug somewhere in PS - would be interesting to find out if it's happening to more than just us.
Actually this looks a lot like a bug with a GPU driver.
Has the issue reoccurred since you turned off GPU usage?
My trouble is I just use PS and expect it to work.
Well, as Adobe did not make your computer, OS, GPU, … you have to do your own trouble-shooting to verify if the issue is actually with an Adobe application or with another component.

  • Shared folder in finder window accidentally removedm- how to replace it?

my wife accidentally deleted the shared file in the finder window.
    How do I replace it?
I discovered it was missing because we just bought a new MacBook and wanted to fly in some library info.
    THANKS

chose file>preferences>sidebar and the appropriate boxes were already checkedchecked, so… I think I have to delete a prefs in a library, right?
if I'm right about that, which one?
can't look at the moment because migration assistant is having it's way with the computer…

  • In the lefthand sidebar of Finder, under 'Shared', I encounter in addition my TC, another computer, identified by a long name starting with 'hp'. I don't have another computer. What could this be? And how to get rid of it?

In the Finder sidebar, under 'Shared', I encounter my TC, as well as another item with a long name starting with 'hp'. 'Get info' shows it to be a 'PC'. However, I don't have a PC. It cannot be my printer (HP), since that has anoter name.
I can not access the item, which has me a 'guest'.
What could this item be? And how to get rid of it?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    DB

It's almost certainly your hp printer and is showing the WiFi adapter MAC address after the HP.
To verify, look at the printer configuration page via Bonjour in Safari.  The settings tab shows the Mac address in the bottom left hand corner for my model of HP printer.
I'm sorry but I can't explain why that would show up in the finder.

  • Two unknown computers show up under "shared." What does this mean?

When I open a finder window, two computers that are unknown to me show up under "shared." What does this mean?
Does this mean someone has broken into my wireless network? Or that these people have access to my files? I don't want to be "sharing" anything with people I don't even know.

It means two of your neighbors also have a wireless network. They cannot access your computer unless you give them your userid and password.
Go ahead and try to access their computers. Unless they have guest sharing turned on, usually to share photos with family and friends, you will not be able to access their computers.
I’m on a university network and have hundreds of names in the Shared section of my sidebar, but do not have access to their computers, nor theirs to mine.

Mike, thanks for turning me onto that Apple Support article.  My aging MacBook has been a good computer.  Recently it has had a few problems which required me to erase and restore everything.  I suppose I'm trying to treat it gently by doing more frequent maintenance on the disk health.  I thought doing an occasional repair permissions was in keeping with a more active preventative maintenance attitude. This way of thinking may be completely wrong on my part. If you could suggest other ways to promote healthy MacBook aging I'm all ears. I think I know one way is to try to use only up to 75% of it's memory capacity, but currently I'm at about 90%.
