What is a CODEC

I am making slideshows with FCP and I am looking to see how I can output a High Quality DVD. I have read from a few threads that when you make slideshows it is difficult to maintain the high quality especially since a TV is a lot lower in pixels than a computer. SO BASICALLY I keep seeing people say what is your codec? Can I get an explanation of a CODEC and can someone give me a simple way to make sure I am producing at the highest quality possible- Amateur Nick

CODEC stands for COmpression DECompression. It is the set of algorithms implemented in software/firmware/hardware which takes the raw data and squeezes it into a smaller number of bits. Most are referred to as "lossy" which means they discard some data so the result is not as pristine as the original when DECompressed. Listen to a cymbal splash on a CD in AIFF, them compress it in itunes to a low bit rate MP3, and you'll hear the difference, even with cheesy computer speakers. That's a lossy compression example.
What's that have to do with photos, FCP, and making a DVD.
Lets say your photos start out at 3000x2000 pixels (rough numbers, I know), or 6MP. A regular DVD has only 720x480 at maximum to deal with, so that photo has to be squeezed down. Oh, also remember that the original photo was probably compressed as well to JPG (there are other formats like TIFF and RAW which can be lossless, but most cameras and amateurs use JPG.
Do search in these forums or DVD SP forums for dealing with still images and how to be preprocess them for use in slide shows. You'll probably wind up using Photoshop (or the smaller Elements) to do the work. There are a variety of choices for how to bring these photos into FCP (sequence settings) for processing as a slide show. Then you'll compress them again using compressor to MPEG2 for DVD SP. Most will suggest a constant bit rate for photos, but you may want to try several rates your self depending on how much movement you've put into the slide show (you know, like the "Ken Burns" effect).
All that said, I've made acceptable slide shows with music, "Ken Burns" motion, etc. using iPhoto output to iDVD, then projected on large screens for charitable functions. I'd give that a try initially to see if it might meet your quality expectations easily right off the bat, at the expense of control and flexibility of designing your DVD menus, etc. But mine were auto play and loop, so no menu was ever seen.
References: See "Slideshows" on page 405 and "Preparing Stills for Slideshows" in the DVD SP V4 manual (for creating slideshows directly in DVD SP).
See "Still Images" in the FCP 6 index (volume IV);
See iPhoto: help slideshow for more information, but it's very easy to do.
Good Luck.

What setting or codec do I use for Capturing HDV 1080i HDV

Not enough information. The settings you use depends on exactly what format you shot and what device you're using to capture.

What is a codec for the sound on your iPhone

Audio formats supported: AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV.

  • Hi! a member said to get  MPEG Streamclip to see what kind of codec i need

well, could anyone tell me how to have this program let me know what kind of codec i need?

I meant within the program, not when trying to open the file. You need to convert it to be able to play in QT
Here is a screenshot to give you an idea, MPEG Streamclip is reliant on codecs and that will determine what you can convert to. If something is missing than that is a codec you need.

  • What are supported codecs for Whisper feature?

    Dear Experts,
I'm looking for Cisco document/white paper/URL that shows the supported codec for Whisper feature.
On the “Agent Greeting and Whisper Announcement Feature Guide for Cisco Unified Contact Center Enterprise - Release 8.5(x) - July 2011” at page 11 “Protocol Requirement” section, it only mentions codec G.729 can be used in Agent Greeting deployment. It doesn't mention any list of supported codec for the Whisper feature.
Would somebody be able to share the pointer?
    Thank you.

Actually, MPEG-4 is a family of codecs, which includes H.264. But your other post ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1923894&tstart=0 ) suggests that you want to edit in MPEG-4. If so, what codec is the source video?

  • What kind of codec is this?

Hello - I hope Im in the right place. I am not a video guy but
I am seeing other related questions so that is why I am posting here.
I got a quick time video from someone who was supposed to send me a QT
using the Codecs "Avid DNxHD 36" or "DVCPRO HD". The QT I got looks like it
was made with the "AVdn". Can someone tell me is that basically the same thing? Is that a
different type of Codec? I am a little unfamiliar with such things other than what I am supposed to receive
and usually I recieve QTs and they look correct. I am getting this info from the "Movie Inspector" window in QT under "format"
    thanks for any help!!

Verified. I exported a DNxHD 175 clip as SAME AS SOURCE, and GOT INFO...and it says this:

  • Whats the best codec to use when working with JPEG's

Hey all, I'm working on project that are scanned JPEGS @ 2K resolution. What codec would you recommend for the best resolution ? I've tried the Photo-JPEG codec, yet I still get render bar ?
The Photo-JPEG sequence setting, which is to my knowledge, just the same as the JPEG Pics, why does it still ask for me to render (RED OVERHEAD LINE) ? If the sequence is the same as the media, it shouldn't need to be rendered ... correct ?
    Any help appreciated

If you are planning on doing any work on individual images, you will want them in a non-lossy format. JPEGS are recompressed every time you open the image and work on it.
However, if you are going to use the images straight from the cam without editing in Photoshop or the like, JPEGs can be ok. Just convert the image sequence to video before you import the material into FCP as still images take enormous resources within FCP.
I use Quicktime Pro to convert image sequences to a video file. It is much more efficient at it than FCP.

  • DVCPRO HD Workflow? What is the CODEC?

What is the best or preferred workflow to edit and export the final project for highest quality output? Background: we shot our film on The HVX 200 - 24p, 16 x 9 - 720p. Our editor imported the files with this codec, however, I'm not confident that we are seeing the highest quality HD in the final product. How do check I if the codec is correct and what do I export to for the highest HD output?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Paul

The client did not specify a specific output other that simply "The Best". I realize that does not help
Not at all. Ignorant clients make things difficult. They need to choose a format...and they need to make an informed choice on that format. First off, find out what formats these festivals take...that is crucial.
The client did not specify a specific output other that simply "The Best". I realize that does not help
As I stated, DVCPRO HD 720p24.
what should we be exporting the final to for highest quality? DVCPRO HD tape is the best I can do?
Again, depends on what people want and will accept. HDCAM SR is the best you can export...but that is HIGHLY expensive and very FEW companies and festivals have those decks. DVCPRO HD deck will record in the EXACT SAME quality that you shot, so that will be pretty good. But it sounds like you too are a bit in the dark about working with HD. I highly suggest hiring an HD Consultant (post facility) before you get in too deep. Relying on forums for basic support is good, but are full of people who might not know what they are talking about. And I only go so far as I earn a living as a consultant.

  • 24f ...what setup and codec for Canon XHA1

There is an HDV easy setup. Is this the correct way to go?
What about the apple hdv intermediate codec that I see people suggesting? It doesn't show a setting for 1080p 24f though.
Also when editing this footage, can I just work with it the way it is captured or should it be converted with compressor to something more manageable?
    G5 Dual Core 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 g ram, 2 internal sata 2 250gb

So the big advantage of using a capture card is that you can capture in a different codec, like DVCPRO HD. It's easier to edit with?
Yes. That and you can monitor your footage in real time on an HD, or even SD monitor, although you'd need an HD monitor for color correcting. And you can also output to tape to a variety of decks.
What about real time play back? I can see that now on another monitor. What advantage is a capture card?
YOu cannot monitor HDV in real time thru an HDV camera or deck like you do DV. The format will not allow it. You can monitor DVCPRO HD thru a deck, but the decks cost $25,000. The capture card is cheaper. The capture card can send a true HD signal to an HD monitor. Without it, anything you monitor will be a proxy. Even if you have two Apple 23" displays and you use Digital Cinema Display on one...you are not seeing a tru HD image.
If you had a Matrox MXO and an Apple Cinema Display, you could monitor a true HD signal...and they both will cost you $999 each. Otherwise you would have to get an HD CRT or HD LCD monitor, and they go for between $4000 and $35,000. The drawback with this is that with HDV, you still have conform times when outputting. But you can use this card to output to D5 or HDCAM or DVCPRO HD, or downconvert to digitbeta...whathaveyou. It is OUTPUT ONLY...it does not capture, so you'll be stuck working with HDV.
HD is an expensive venture my man....

  • What format or codec?

I took a Hi8 video and burned it to a DVD using a Panasonic DVD recorder---that is used to play DVD's on a TV.  I hit PLAY on the video tape and record on the DVD recorder.  Now I have a DVD with the content on it.  It plays back FINE on the DVD player and thru windows media player.  When I try to "Get Media" using Elements 10,  I get nothing. The DVD shows 6 scenes with an "hour glass" for each one, and the files end with ".OVI".  When I hit "get media" on the bottom right, it just locks up.
I have tried this on both of my computers with the same results.
Do I need to get a specific codec, or change the format of the dvd before trying to add into Elements?
FYI, I have had NO problems downloading any other DVD's from newer video cameras using Elements 10.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, most DVR devices do not create 100% DVD-compliant discs, and especially the first VOB, as they use non-standard nagivation, and a rudimentary menu system. This gives NLE (Non Linear Editor) programs, such as PrE problems. See this ARTICLE for more detail, and also tips on ripping those non-standard VOB's.
This will most likely not be a CODEC issue, as PrE installs the Adobe MainConcept MPEG-2 CODEC, which is the standard for DVD-Video/VOB's.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - things would be best, and especially quality wise, if you were to Capture from your Hi8 tapes. This ARTICLE goes into more detail.

  • What file type and codec should I use for creating a file to send to have an HDCAM copy made

I'm prepping to take a video file of my film into a tape dubbing house to have an HDCAM copy of my project made. I'm using a PC, so Apple ProRes is not an option. What file type, codec, and settings do you recommend?
I was considering MXF, but the highest quality codec is XDCAM 50, which only does up to 50Mbps (I think). I believe HDCAM works at 140Mbps, so I would rather not give them a file that's compressed to almost 1/3rd that, especially since the source is a 5K 5120x2560 project. DPX maybe? I've never exported DPX before because it's not an option on my copy of CS6 - maybe that has to be downloaded separately? I was considering a Quicktim in H.264 at 140Mbps, but I think that would mean some serious rendering for the tape house. I would like to be able to offer them a few different options and see what they prefer, but this is an area where my knowledge runs thin. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm hoping there's an industry standard that I can stick to.

DPX maybe? I've never exported DPX before because it's not an option on my copy of CS6 - maybe that has to be downloaded separately?
Your CS6 'Format' dropdown list should include DPX:
Among the options you listed, DPX would be my choice.
Be certain the dupe house can accept these files before proceeding.

  • What's codec is needed?

    Hi there, folks
I am preparing a music video for a film and have a week to do so. The film was cut on FCP HD uncompressed. At home the files show up fine, but on my laptop they play black. I am far from my home computer now, though. What is the codec I should install and where can I find it?
    Much appreciated!
    - Fredo Viola

Well, you're in a "grey" area as far as I can understand.
I don't know if the DVC PRO/HD components are proprietry or whatever. I would assume so, that way Apple gets to sell more of fcp.
What I do know is that if they're in the right place then qt will make them available to applications.
Perhaps someone else can clarify - I had a search in Support but the only dl I could find was the AIC codec - that seems to freely available.

  • What format/codec to post web videos?

At work they want to post videos we produce on our web site. They will range from a minute to an hour or more. We have heard pitches from companies that do all the work for us, all we have to do is upload the files and provide an interface on our web site. Viewers will not have to install player software, it will just "work" like YouTube.
But of course, the suits decided that was a bad idea, and we will be compressing the files ourselves and hosting it on some server space that comes in at the lowest bid. Our potential viewers will probably not be web savvy, and may be reluctant to download new player software or plugins. Few of our employees even know what the word codec means, and have begun happily compressing files using random settings, and not concerned about quality. (They are also not concerned that they are shooting stuff on HD cameras in 16:9 and using it in 4:3 projects, and people look really skinny).
My question is, what file format/codec to use? We are mostly editing on Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (with Compressor). Perhaps we should do it "Wild West" style, and let everybody compress their programs their own way, maybe different every time they do something? That way, the home computer user is bound to find at least one video that will play on their computer.
    Sigh!

FCE and FCpro are both editors, no converter tools.. allthough they allow to use the QT-engine to create a few codecs..
I would consider flv as a 'standard', by sheer market power of youtube.
but that is no codec in FCE's options .
my workflow, in 10.6. would be:
in FCE: Export QT movie (not QT compression!)
    open that file with QT_X
    choose upload to YT
use 'embbed'-code offered by YT on my site..
.. perhaps, that is too simple..
with FCE you have NO option, to generate a 'web video'; any export needs Quicktime on end-user's side.. FCE doesn't offer flash-video as option.. you need 3rd party apps for that, plus some skills to integrate into a webside, resp. set-up some 'video server' ..
Compressor allows flv as export. still, integration into 'web' unanswered ..
1h webvideo? phpheewww ... that asks for 'streaming video' ..
