What is a computer?

Like, what is it? Is it a radio with a telephone inside it? I heard about this new invention of the "computer", and I was wondering whether it was an iPad taped to a calculator, or a satellite dish with a walkie talkie on it? Those darn kids making there silly electrobot toys.

  • Report on what time a computer crashes

I'm getting power failures on random days, always off office hours. I'm trying to find where I can get info on what time the computer crashed.
I have it hooked up to a UPS so it's long enough to let the battery drain, and it's only one corner in the office. Other corners seem to get power fluxes but never long enough to drain their UPS's. I was considering that it might be the UPS but there have been several different ones in this corner and all had the same problem once in a while, and figured it would have been happening all day long, not just when no one is here.
In talking to the electrician he said it would be helpful if I could get a crash repot and find out what time of the day it keeps happening, so I was thinking I could find that on my iMac somewhere. I've found the Console crash reports and the Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports logs but I'm not sure what I'm reading, seems to mostly be application crashes, not whole system crashes.
Any hints would be awesome! Thanks for the help.
    Amy

Open the Console application (/Applications/Utilities/Console).  IN the left hand column look in these places
for the crash log. You can also look in system log for the reboot and possibly the messages from the UPS (if you have it connected to the system) for when the power first went out.
If the UPS is connected to the system you can set the parameters for how to react to a power outage in System Preferences->Energy Saver; UPS. This way at least the system won;t crash.

  • How do you tell what week your computer was manufactured?

How can I tell what week my computer was manufactured? My serial number is [..snipped...]. Week 19 translates to what month?
    Thank you

Someone, somewhere could theoretically, trace your serial number to your name, address and maybe even how you paid for your computer. I recently had my identity cloned in Mexico. I wouldn’t think of posting any unnecessary information on any website. But that’s just me.

Even though it says 4 GB RAM recommended, I think most experience users woild say 8 GB and up is the real minimum.
    Can't answer the Avid question.

/how do i get whats on my computer screen on my tv via apple tv?

You have to have Mac OS X Mountain Lion installed on your MacBook, however the only way to get it right now is if you are a developer.
Other than that, you will have to wait until it is officially released.

  • HT1752 how do i determine what kind of computer i own?

I need to simply find out what kind of computer I bought in 2009. How do I do that?

To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

  • What is Cloud Computing?

I need to know what is cloud computing and whether there's any similarity between "ESB" (Enterprise Service Bus") and "Cloud".
*If they are similar*, what is the best solution?
*If they are not similar*, where to use 'ESB' and where to use 'Cloud'?
    Thanks!

Well, We cannot compare Cloud Vs ESB.Both work in a different manner and concptually different.
ESBs are good for routing messages to multiple destinations. It is also good for doing transformations that have little to no business rules. The footprint is much smaller and incurs minimal overhead therefore the performance is much better.
Use ESB when You want a really low cost solution,Only need connectivity, simple transformations and routing of messages.
Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand n/w access to shared pool of configurable resources . for ex: servers, networks, apps, services that can be rapidly provisioned.
There are different model of cloud: basically, delivery models:
    SaaS,PaaS,IaaS
SaaS (Software as a service) - here consumers does not have control over operating system, hardware or any n/w infrastructure. Instead, It uses an application.
PaaS (Platform as a Service) - here The consumer controls the applications that run in the environment (and possibly has some control over the hosting environment), but does not control the operating system, hardware or network
infrastructure on which they are running. The consumer uses a hosting environment for their applications.
IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) - The consumer can control the operating system, storage, deployed applications and possibly networking components such as firewalls and load balancers, but not the cloud infrastructure beneath them. The consumer uses "fundamental computing resources" such as processing power, storage, networking components or middleware.
I think i would not be wrong if i take examples for cloud as : Email hosting, Gmail, Facebook and social networking sites..etc.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,

just upgraded to Lion...What does indexing computer mean?

It is finding and putting in order (indexing) all your files so that when you use Spotlight (the magnifying glass icon in the far upper right corner) it will find what you search for instantly, even as you are typing it. The first time it indexes it takes a long time, depending on how much is on your hard drive.

  • HT203254 how to make whats on my computer show on my t.v.

how to make whats on my computer show on my t.v.

I'm presuming that you've already made the connection with a suitable cable.  What are you getting on the TV?  Are you getting a completely blank screen?  Are you getting a message similar to 'no input detected'? Or are you getting the spiral galaxy desktop?
If the last of these then what you have is an extended desktop.  If you move the mouse cursor off the edge of the MBP's screen you will see it appear on the TV.  Similarly you can drag windows from the MBP's screen to the TV.  At present the MBP's screen is the primary display and shows the menu bar and dock, and the TV is the secondary display.  To change this go into System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement.  You will see an image of two screens, a smaller one representing the MBP's display and a larger one representing the external display.  At the top of the smaller screen in the image is a bar, this represents the menu bar at the top of the screen.  Drag it from the smaller screen to the larger screen.  The external display will become the primary display and the menu bar and dock will appear there and any new windows or applications that you open subsequently will appear there too.
silvergc's suggestion to use mirroring will work, but you won't be using the native resolution of the TV which could result in fuzziness or bluriness of the image on the TV.

  • What is Grid computing

Hi i am very new to the oracle.could anybody please clearly explain me what is grid computing and how it will be use in IT system.

There are four mentions of grid computing in the Oracle Concepts manual including the following definition:
The grid style of computing treats collections of similar IT resources holistically as a single pool, while exploiting the distinct nature of individual resources within the poolhttp://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/intro.htm#sthref14
Basically you can build a 'grid' computing environment by designing your application in pieces that sit on several different servers. You can do this using distributed databases, replication, or RAC alone or in combination of the other features.
Oracle's approach centers on using RAC.

  • HT1455 What if my computer will not start up in safe mode?  What next?

What is the remedy for a MacBook that will not start up in safe mode?  The gray apple icon and progress wheel appear, I let go the shift key and the whole thing shuts off again.  Please help.  Thank you.

My understanding is that the Apple logo is produced by the disk and the spinning wheel shows that the software boot process has started.
1 - Shut down your Mac
2 - Press the power button to start and
3 - Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the S key
4 - At the prompt type the following and then hit return:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issues were found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 4 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do). When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type the following at the prompt and hit return:
    reboot
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
    Good luck.
