What is a CRC Error Count in SMART Utility

Ok...I've been having a massive beach balling problem, and was told by one of the fellow community members to DL a SMART Utility..which I did.
My CRC Error Count is now starting to climb, and is up to 2289.  I also started with NO errors, and am now up to 12 errors, with the last error being "command aborted".  Help please!  I think my HD is failing, but SMART says no.

Cyclic Redundancy Check  is a common technique for detecting data transmission errors.
As long as you got your data backed up, you have nothing to worry about.
TimeMachine on one powered external drive conected all the time and a Carbon Copy Clone on another disconnected and updated once a week is prefered.
Format both external drives HFS+Journaled in Disk Utility.
Your covered both from human errors and hardware failures as you can hold option key and boot off the clone.
If your having problems you can try cleaning everything out of your caches and letting the computer rebuild itself.
Downlaod and run ALL the cleaning and maintainece aspects of the FREE OnyX and reboot
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Hold c and boot off the disk that comes with your comptuer and under the Utilities menu is Disk Utility
Select your drive on the left and Repair Permisisons (ignore what you see)
Then Repair Disk, if you get any errors here that are NOT repaired, then you got a issue with your drive.

  • Ultra DMA CRC Error Count

I have a SATA 6 drive which is being downgraded from Ultra DMA by Windows 7.  It used to handle about 130MB/s, now it's being limited to 25MB/s.  This is apparently due to the Ultra DMA CRC Error Count going to 9 from a bad connection.  I've
replaced the connection, but cannot find any way to make Windows 7 retry the drive at the higher data rate.
With Windows XP there was a registry key (ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess) that you could add to make it re-detect, but this doesn't appear to work with Windows 7.  In fact all the solutions I can find online only seem to work with XP.  Is there some
way to fix this without re-initializing the drive?  I really don't relish the idea of transferring 4TB of data at 25MB/s (40+ hours!) just to reset the drive.

    Hi,
Have you tried to manually turn DMA on through device manager?
Please take a try with the follwoing steps:
Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button , clicking
Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under
System, clicking Device Manager.‌  If you're prompted for
an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, for each item that has the word
Channel as part of its label, right-click the item, and then click
    Properties.
Click the Advanced Settings tab. Under Device Properties, select or clear the
Enable DMA check box, and then click OK.
    More information, please see:
Turn Direct Memory Access (DMA) on or off

  • What has caused "data error count"  under execution detail on Audit browser

    Hi,
I have a simple mapping that load data from external table to target fact table. From OWB Runtime Audit browser, the Execution Details page show the status= Complete + <Red error sign>. And the value under Data error count is 2563. Where can I look for information about what has caused this errors or what the data error are? The SQL*Loader log file looks OK and no bad file generated. And I don't see suspecious under WB_RT_AUDIT*, WB_RT_ERROR tables It's owb9ir2 on 9iDB Thanks.

Solved. I set the audit level to the highest and re-executed and can see the error msg now. It would be nice if audit broser can show the report for all the rejected rows.

  • How can I narrow down what's causing CRC errors over internet downloads?

I'm trying to determine if its something wrong with my hardware configuration, my software or my actual internet connection that is giving me trouble.
Recently with my new build I am noticing all my downloads being large or small ending up either not fully downloaded or just full with CRC errors.
I'm not even sure where to begin as I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days and it just seems to keep getting worse.
My initial problem was the new nforce ide drivers that didn't quite gel with my optical drives.  I ended up unstalling the ide drivers and my optical drives worked correctly again.  (problem with optical drive was when you put a dvd writer (lite on 411s) in the system would freeze and not play the movie until the disk was ejected - then everything would return to normal)
After trying to find a fix or someway to get the drivers to work I started to notice I had trouble downloading large files off news servers.  For the past 3 days I just downloaded random stuff that looked to be complete as in all the files were there with pars.  I download the files and the winrar gives me crc errors and the pars say the files are incomplete.
Then I start to try to download any large file off the internet - game demos mostly off gamespy.com and the downloads just stop midway.
All these problems just started to add up and I'm having a hard time trying to narrow down and knock off what it is and what not.
Basically to start is there a way I can see if it's something related to my ide drivers, aspi drivers, internet connection, cable problem etc.  Please help, it's driving me nuts.  =)

Are you running xp sevice pack 2?  I was having issues with having to refresh my browser several times to get a page to load,   and downloads sometimes stopped.
I downloaded the following sp2 patch from microsoft and it fixed the refresh issues,
    http://www.winnetmag.com/windowspaulthurrott/Article/ArticleID/44014/windowspaulthurrott_44014.html
If you are browsing while the download runs,  it could be sp2's new 10 connection limit.   I tweaked it to 50 connections and fixed ie stalling when loading long forum pages with alot of signatures present.  (I tweaked it with xp-anti spy)
    Can you tell Im guessing?
Possibly a bad ide or sata cable?
Have you tried running memtest to test for errors?   I prefer goldmemory as I believe it is more sensitive to errors with an a64.   It found errors memtest didnt.
This system is giving you a much harder time than it should.  Maybe you have a flaky board or memory errors.
good luck at any rate.  (p.s. its 3 am here,  couldnt sleep,  prob not making alot of sense at this point.  lol)

  • CRC errors with non-home hub device

    Hey folks
When I first replaced my dying BT Home Hub with a third party DSL modem, there were initially a lot of CRC errors and poor SNR ratios. I called BT Broadband support and the agent appeared to rectify the problem on by undertaking actions on BT's side. It was something like performing two line tests back-to-back -- I know sounds odd, but it worked and the the third party DSL modem worked happily for 6 months.
This week the third party modem started reporting high numbers of CRC errors, much like when first connected, it works for a while then resets when the CRC error count overflows. I'm wondering if there is some other state on BT's side that could rectify the problem. I've spoke with two agents this week, and they had no idea what I was talking about (and I agree it sounds like voodoo).
Any ideas on what the initial action was on BT's side that enabled the modem to work in the first place?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi John
I didn't understand the question about the test socket (physical socket?).
The line passes the quiet line test.
    The third party router shows:
            Downstream
    Upstream
    SNR Margin
    0.1
    6.2
    db
    Line Attenuation
    53.5

    Kbps
    POWER
    0.0
    12.3
    dbm
    CRC
    5786
    0
The CRC errors accumulate until they hit a threshold and the device resets dropping the connection.
    The Home hub shows:
    ADSL settings
    VPI/VCI    0/38
    Type    PPPoA
    Modulation    ITU-T G.992.5
    Latency type    Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up)    2.8 dB / 5.3 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up)    49.5 dB / 26.1 dB
    Output power (Down/Up)    0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm
The obvious difference is 3dB in line attenuation and noise margin. This was the case when I first connected the third party router before BT did the line reset that allowed the device to work. It has worked flawlessly for months.
    Thanks
BTW, I don't want to appear unduly ornery, but BT tech support repeatedly ask on the telephone "why aren't you using HH2 we provided?".
    1) It randomly drops OS X wifi connections which makes me really unpopular in the house.
    2) It has poor wifi interaction with work lenovo laptop.
    3) It has no support for QoS provisioning so kids streaming video interferes with work.
    4) It has unreliable and undocumented USB storage, cf third-party solution which offers glitchless SMB and FTP.
    5) Printer support is undocumented (though works better than my third-party alternative :-) )
My first HomeHub 2 had exactly the same issues before it died at which time I invested in a third party alternative. To credit BT they sent a refurbished replacement but this has all the same issues and a non-functioning reset switch.

  • Why I get CRC error when copying outlook.ost file?

My workstation is using NTFS, Outlook 2007 with Exchange 2007 server.
    My outlook.ost file is 1.7GB.
As my Outlook runs into problem, I tried to copy the outlook.ost file to another location for repair, but I keep getting CRC errors and the file was not copied.
I also tried to use winrar to compress it and it runs into the same CRC error.
Q#1. What causes this CRC error? hard disk error or software?
Q#2. How to repair such CRC error?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peter,
The cyclic redundancy check, or “CRC” error, indicates a bad spot/corruptions within the file that you are trying to copy and in lot of cases with your hard disk.
To make sure if the problem is with the .ost file or your hard disk, you can fire up a Command Prompt window, and then copy the file to NUL:
C:>CD (path of your .ost file)
    C:(path of your .ost file)>copy name.ost NUL
If this succeeds, the problem is with your .ost file. If this fails, it should be a hardware based disk issues.
If it's an issue with your .ost file, I'd suggest to run
scanpst.exe tool to repair your data file, then check if this fixed it.
When the issue is hardware based, you probably need to find Disk Errors in the System log of your Event Viewer. You can access the Event Viewer by going to:
Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer
By the way, .ost file is actually a local copy of your mail items on the server. For a corrupted .ost file, you actually don't need to "copy the outlook.ost file to another location for repair". You can simply rename it to .ost.old
or delete it, and then re-launch Outlook to let it generate a new .ost file from server.

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:

But I am getting this alert from SCOM and SCOM has no information about the alert for me to find out what to do - thought that was the point of SCOM to let you know of problems and how to resolve them. :)
The alert is coming from the Error Count Monitor that is part of the Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions (v 4.0.0.0)
I have tried looking in the Event Logs on the Host and there doesn't seem to be any storage related errors there. I am trying to establish if this is a false positive, why it is happening and if it is safe to override and ignore.
There is nothing on the Product Knowledge tab and nothing on the Alert Context other than what I have already mentioned (see below).

  • 10Gig (tengigabit) CRC Errors between N5K500 and 3750X

    Dear Forum,
We have an issue with a 10 Gig connection between a Nexus 5548 and a 3750X 10Gig. There is also a HSRP group running over this link with aggressive timeouts which recently behaves somewhat unstable. We noticed a bunch of CRC errors on this link on the 3750X side (about 300 per hour) and assume that these are related to the HSRP troubles once or twice a day.
Originally the connection was made with a twinax cable. We already changed to MMF fiber with SR SFP+'s. The 10Gig Uplink Module in the 3750x has been replaced already. All to no avail. Now it's up to replace the 3750 (receives CRC) or the Nexus Chassis (sending device)
I was wondering if there is some experience on the list what is the most probably cause and solution here.
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael.

  • CRC ERROR ----- WHY ???-----

    Hi all,
I am facing the crc error with some one switch... I did verifed the L1 (connections, power etc...) this are okay.
After of verify all this, I did a test disabling (disconnect cable) the port and clear the counters, but the port continuos the increase "CRC ERROR".
Someone Known why IS this happeing???
Probably thi problem on switch, but why????

It is still counting with the cable disconnected? Surreal!
The only thing I can think of is that it might be being used as a reflector port for an RSPAN session.
What model of switch is it? Can you show us a show run and a show int for the port?

  • Read the transmit/receive error counter from CAN

I would like to read every packet that runs accross the CAN bus. I am in a situation where my Can Receive.vi is set to read any CAN bus errors, but I would like to see the entire can packet(including CRC values, DLC values, etc etc). Is there a way to do this? Any sample vi's out there?
Also, I'de like to read the status of the receive/transmit error counter on either side I assume. I am trying to see what my arbitration values hover around (less than 128, over 128, etc etc).
    Thanks for any help.
    Andre

    Hi Andre
The NI CAN hardware does not have the ability to access the full raw CAN frame. This is because of the used CAN controller (Philips SJA 1000 on Series 2 CAN hardware) does which does not provide all of this information. However, the following data is provided:
Arbitration ID (11 or 29 bit)
    Data Length (DLC)
    Remote Frame Flag (RTR)
    Data (0-8 byte)
As you are interested in the raw/unconverted CAN data, you should focus on the NI-CAN Frame API, as the NI-CAN Channel API tries to abstract these information.
With Series 2 CAN hardware, you have read access to the receive/transmit error counter. Take a look at the ncGetAttr function (Frame API) or the GetProperty function (Channel API) and query the ‘Series 2 Error/Arb Capture’ attribute or the ‘Interface Series 2 Error / Arb Capture’ property for that. You can find more details on how to read the returned data in the help for the two functions.

  • Error counter

I am using IBM's websphere application developer to create a new java site. I have a login page that has username/password fields. I need to create a generic class that counts how many errors you get on a page and after for example 3 errors, you go to a customer service help page. We want it to be generic enough that you could use this class in any page for error counting.
I am new to the Java world.
    Thanks for your help!!

  • What's with disk errors that disappear, sort of?

    1. MB started running slow. Activity monitor showed high CPU use when nothing was running.
    2. Ran Disk Utility and it reported unfixable errors. Suggested wiping, reinstalling o/s and restoring from Time Machine
    3. MB would then not boot.
    4. Time passed with MB turned off. Could not get an appointment at the Genius Bar.
    5. Ran TechTool hardware diagnostic that reported problems on the hard disk
    6. Booted holding Command+R
    7. Boot succeeded. (Ran a Time Machine backup to capture the latest.)
    8. Shutdown and restarted
    9. Succeeded
    10. Shut down and booted from Recovery Partition
    11. Ran disk utility diagnostic.
    12. No Verify errors, no Permission errors.
    13. Ran TechTool again. Volumne Structure test failed.
    14. TechTool said Volume Structure Rebuild could not be completed.
    15. Rebooted normally with no problem.
What the @%#$ is going on?

You might want to run the Apple hardware test to see what it says: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php and see what it says about the health of the drive. It will also give you visibility to the SMART sensor values.
The preceding two steps are to try and verify that the hardware is in good shape. Sometimes, though, if a drive is sick, it can show differing symptoms. How old is your MBP?
