Can anyone explain me what exactly is a data source and how is it used?

A DataSource is not only a structure in which source system fields are logically grouped together, but also an object that contains ETTL-related information.
Four types of DataSources exist:
DataSources for transaction data·
DataSources for characteristic attributes·
DataSources for characteristic texts·
DataSources for characteristic hierarchies
In a source system data source are assigned to particular data appliction componenet.From the business content it is in the form of deliverd (D)version you have covert into Active (A)version.

Aging refers to values in different time period ranges. Example, the customer (credit) aging report can look like this.

For P&L information, you may use 0FI_GL_6 datasource (or 0FI_GL_10 if you use ERP 5.0 version). This datasource reads the same information used in R/3 transaction f.01 (table glt0).

Design document is basically a document to say how the design is to be developed for a particular solution ex: FI it says what is the data fow and what are the data targets to be used and how data shld be stored for providing the client a solution they need.
Is cube a data target?
Yes cube is a data target.

What exactly a data source is? Is flat file a data source (while extracting from flat file)?

A datasource is a group of fields whose data can be extracted to BW. Flat file is actually a source system.

What is the data source name and the data target name for the table COSP

Hi,
Actaully i am new to fico/bw,and i have to create a report based on the actual and budget value and difference in the variance.
in R/3 side the table they are using is COSP,so please let me know what is the data source name and the cube or ods name in BW side.wht are the fields in which i can get the BUDGET value in the report.
here we are using all the business content extractors and BI content cubes and odss.

What is the data source for cProjects hierarchy texts 0CPR_GUID?

The cProjects hierarchy will not display texts, only the technical name. I believe I must extract the texts for BW InfoObject 0CPR_GUID. I can not identify the text counterpart to 0DPR_HIERARCHY_ATTR data source for BW InfoObject 0CPR_GUID.
Questions:
1) What is the technical name for the text data source of BW InfoObject 0CPR_GUID?
2) Is this data source included in NetWeaver 04?

The project element data sources must be mapped to both the project element infosoure AND 0CPR_GUI_TEXT.
For each data source

Dear Gunasekhar,
There are no separate datasource for 0sold to, 0ship to and 0bill to parties.
They are referrenced to 0CUSTOMER in BW. and the datasources for 0customer are 0CUSTOMER_ATTR and 0CUSTOMER_TEXT.

What is the data source to populate ODS 0FIGL_O10

Hi,
The data source 0FI_GL_10 is not available in my source system(OLTP system), so from where should i populate the ods 0figl_o10?
When i installed the ods from business content it automatically took the data source as 0fi_gl_10. but when i try to upload data, ie, when i assign data source to the infosource 0fi_gl_10 in RSA1, the source system does not show 0fi_gl_10. Normally we transfer the data source in source system and replicate it in BW, but this particular data source is not available in source system.
Any idea on which data source should we use instead of 0fi_gl_10?

PO delivery schedule lines are first consolidated in an ODS through data from the InfoSources Purchasing Data (Document Schedule Line Level) as of 2.0B (2LIS_02_SCL) and Offsetting Confirmation and Goods Receipt (2LIS_02_SGR).

Right click on ODS's & Cubes in MM - Infosource Overview - This will give the list of loadable data targets for associated Datatargets.
Go to RSA5 search for the datasources.

Using different data source and connection name

Hi,
We have a requirement where the data source for our application is already configured on the server by name like MyDBDataSource. But the database connection name in our application is like My_DB. So application module is using data source name like My_DBDS. If i change data source name in application module configuration manually to be MyDBDataSource, then it fails at runtime. This has been identified as bug as mentioned in this post

Is your issue get solved ?
I would like to mention few things about the database connection in application & data source in Weblogic.
1. When you create a database connection in Application (for example say connection name as hr) then in the Application Module Database Configurations in the bc4j.xcfg File Custom JDBCDataSource will be set as <Custom JDBCDataSource="java:comp/env/jdbc/hrDS"/> for both ApplnModule shared & Local. So when you create data source in weblogic it is better to create the JNDI Name like jdbc/hrDS ( ie between the '/' and 'DS' you have to specify the name of database connection you created in the application ).What ever the Data source name is no matter.
2.If you change the JNDI name of data source later like jdbc/hrconnectionDS then it is better to delete the old hr connection from application and recreate a connection as hrconnection. After that you have to edit bc4j.xcfg file in the Application Module--> Configurations and set Custom JDBCDataSource as below for both local & shared config.
<Custom JDBCDataSource="java:comp/env/jdbc/hrconnectionDS"/>
