What is a "document" in Spotlight?

I was searching for an old Word document from the Finder and could not locate it. I found the file by date and went back to figure out why I didn't find it the first time. I had put keywords in the search field and added Kind as Document. If I turn that off, it finds the document. With it on, it does not locate it. What is a Document to Spotlight? How else would you specify Word documents if not as Document?

Apple's definition of a Document in Spotlight is about the most useless thing ever. I don't use it. Technically, "Document" is defined in a search by the Raw Query of "kMDItemContentTypeTree = public.content"--which includes dang near every sort of file--except, evidently, your Word documents (my MSWord docs, created in the Office 2004 version of Word, are included in the Document definition).
If I were trying to get only MS Word documents, I would use "Kind is Other" and type Word into the blank field. That will cover Word docs created in my version of MS Office, whose kind is defined as "Microsoft Word Document" in their metadata, and will also bring up Word documents going all the way back to Word 97, whose kind is defined as "Word 97 Format (.doc)" in their metadata. I don't have the more recent version of MS Word, but you can check one of your files with GetInfo and see what it says for Kind.

  • What is Report Document Format?

    Hi,
I have seen "Report Document Format" in many Oracle Report Developer's job adverts. Following is an example.
"Skills & Experience Required, Oracle Reports Developer - expert level, Report Document Format (RDF) - must have extensive knowledge in this area. Java Development, Working with Oracle Databases and good Communication Skills."
My question is what is "Report Document Format"? I hope it is different from RDF (Report Definition File).
    Thanks.

  • What is system document?

    Hi Sir/Madam,
What does "System Document" mean? It is said "In the procedure recommended by SAP, always store the original documents under the number of the system document?
What is the system document and what is original document?
    Thanks
    Satya

    Dear,
    For e.g.
You have recieved an invoice from your vendor. So physical invoice is the Original Document.
When you post the invoice through MIRO or F-43 system will save the document and give you the document number is call System document
So SAP recommends that you write this System document number on the phisical invoice (original document) so that it can be identified that this has been posted and in any point of time in future it can be analyzed easily.....Because all commercial documents and invoices are filed and thrown on to the racks.

  • IWebBrowser2.Type="Adobe PDF Reader".  What is the Document?

    Hi,
I'm displaying a PDF within the ActiveX IWebBrowser2 container and looking for a way to access (parse) the text. When displaying Excel files, Type is "Excel" and Document is a Workbook reference.  When displaying PDFs, Type="Adobe PDF Reader", but what is the Document?  I've come across threads that suggest it might be of type IAcroAXDocShim or CAcroPDDoc, but when trying to use their methods receive "class not registered".  Re: "class not registered", is it necessary to install Adobe Acrobat?  Why?  Reader is installed.  Seems to me there ought to be a way to access the text with the tools at hand, no?
    Any help is appreciated!

Adobe don't offer such a facility in their controls, not even with Acrobat. If you want to find out more about the very rich programming interface to Acrobat, and the tiny programming interface to the free Adobe Reader, you should download and install the Acrobat SDK - many thousands of pages of documentation and a few examples (for illustration, not cannibalism).

  • .EML formatted documents in Spotlight

I run MSOffice for Mac 2011 v 14.2.2.  When i save emails, i drag them into the appropriate DropBox folder, and it saves them as *.EML  Finder used to be able to search for words within the EML documents saved on the disc, but when I installed Lion, I am no longer able to do this.  Does Alfred search text inside an EML formatted document?
After a couple of hours a the Apple store today, the Apple Geniuses exhausted all of their resources and finally gave up.  They said that when they came out with Lion, they no longer index the contents of .eml files.  They said that what the engineers have done, they can't undo.  He referred me to this article: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macoutlook/1421-can-n o-longer-search-e-mail-folders-after/34bc6aee-be47-4422-b5a4-ba03adbcef13?msgId= 2ba11371-21c0-4053-8bfe-19f581785e80
I told him that I had found this website that says that you can change the configuration
so that a finder search will reveal the text of .eml files:
    http://ars-codia.raphaelbauer.com/2010/12/index-eml-files-using-spotlight-in-mac .htmlhttp://ars-codia.raphaelbauer.com/2010/12/index-eml-files-using-spotlight-in-mac .html
    http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/terminal-commands-for-improving-spotligh t.php
The Genius bar people said that they would not recommend using terminal commands as a work around for this problem.  I am uncomfortable with doing this on my own.  So, Apple left me without a solution and I am still looking.  Thanks for your help.

Utilizing Oracle Text, you can index and search the files (MS Word & text) whether they exist in or out of the database. Formatting will be maintained in either case.
    9i Text Application Developer's Guide
    10g Text Application Developer's Guide
However, if you are interested in the database being able to secure and backup & recover the files, then you will want to keep them in the database.

  • Customer Aging Report(without reconciled transaction)-what types of documents are considered?

    Hi Friends,
As per my knowledge,Customer Aging Report consider only those documents(ar invoice,ar downpayment, incoming payment-payment on a/c,ar credit memo) which are open and showing balance due and standalone JE against Customer.
As I cross checked,I found those standalone JE where Customer and round off account are considered as debit, credit are not considered by 'Customer Aging report'.
So,I just want to know what are all the logic based on which SAP B1 standard report 'Customer Aging ' (without reconciled transaction ) consider the documents????

Which SAP B1 Version and Patch is under use at your end ?
There were issues in SAP B1 regarding reconcilliations in versions prior to 2007 series.

  • Certain PDF documents not spotlight-indexed nor copy/paste to TextEdit

    Hello,
I've got a problem with certain PDF documents and Preview.app. I can read them perfectly by eye (I understand there's an overlying image?) but the text characters, when copied and pasted into TextEdit, are little rectangles with a tiny alien face (?) inside. TextEdit states the font is "LastResort", but doesn't allow to change the font, nor can I save the TextEdit document ("UTF-8 cannot be used for saving the document").
The worst about all is that Spotlight doesn't recognise the PDF files, they are not indexed, so I cannot search for text inside.
I tried to open the PDF document with Adobe Reader, which opens the document, copies and pastes into TextEdit without a problem, so I believe the problem must be on the Preview.app and/or System end.
Any solution, or is this a bug? Thanks for any help!

Any solution, or is this a bug?
I think this has to do with the way some pdf files are constructed, mapping text to the Unicode Private Use Area (reflected by those Last Resort symbols you see) plus shortcomings of Preview compared to Adobe Reader. The only fix is to use the latter, and tell Apple you want Preview improved:

  • How do I change what Firefox opens documents with so I can print them?

I used to print documents for work. The would show up in separate tabs across the top. I click on it and print. Now all the documents go to an arrow on the side and when Ipull them up they are in wordpad and jibberish. please help.

Could you describe this in a little more detail?
First, are you opening PDF documents from a website? If Firefox is automatically downloading them instead of displaying them, you may be able to change that setting. Please see this article for more information: [[View PDF files in Firefox without downloading them]].
Second, instead of clicking items on the download panel to open them, try clicking the folder icon on the right to open the folder they're in with the file highlighted. What kind of file does Windows say it is? If you right-click the file, do you have the option to open it in another program?
Third, if the problem comes after printing, make sure the checkbox for "Print to file" is NOT selected in the print dialog.

  • What's the DEAL with Spotlight!?!?

Ever since Leopard, I have NOT been able to view system files through Spotlight. I thought for sure that this would be fixed in 10.5.2. Was I ever wrong.... WHAT a disappointment!! This is such a beneficial feature, especially when trying to remove all of the files from an application after deleting it. Is there some way to do this (besides using Command-F and enabling system files to be searched)? I'd really like things to be back to the way they were before Leopard....can't anything be done about this?!?

Spotlight in Tiger did not index system files. The big differences are that Leopard now does index system files, but it also now includes your home Library folder in the definition of system files, and in order to see them you have to explicitly tell it to display them. See my explanation of the best way to do it here:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html
I had hoped 10.5.2 would make some GUI improvements to Spotlight, but no such luck. Be sure to let Apple know that the choices they have made for the Spotlight GUI are not what one would expect for "user friendly" software:

  • What is the documents folder??

I was using an app, I don't remember which one ... Maybe notes plus or goodreader ... oh it may have been pages possibly? Anyway, I went to export a file and one of the options was "ipad documents folder." What does that mean!?!?! Thanks!

If you are absolutely sure you have finished with the files, drag them to the trash and empty it.
If you delete something you need you may have to recapture video or even start your project again depending on what you have deleted in error.
Even if you have to restart a project it will be a lot quicker because you will probably remember most of the things that you originally spent ages thinking about.
